McCain highlights opposition to torture

Posted: Tuesday, November 06, 2007 5:54 PM by Mark Murray

From NBC/NJ's Carrie Dann
CEDAR RAPIDS, IA -- In an airport press conference between campaign hops around Iowa this afternoon, McCain continued to highlight his opposition to waterboarding, the subject of a key policy difference between himself and other GOP rivals.

"It's a commentary on their lack of understanding of America's history," he said of his opponents' tolerance of the interrogation practice, which the senator classifies as torture. "It displays a fundamental misunderstanding of the moral high ground that America needs if we're going to prevail in this struggle against radical Islamic extremists."

The Arizona senator also reminded reporters of his difference with one opponent -- Giuliani  -- over the issue of line-item vetoes. (McCain has called for a presidential line-item veto and has accused the mayor of taking part in a lawsuit undermining that proposal.)

Asked about Christian conservative Paul Weyrich's endorsement of Romney, McCain declined to comment, although he acknowledged that he has "had some disagreements" with the Moral Majority co-founder in the past. (Weyrich has indicated that the senator's campaign finance legislation, which limits political advertising by groups, is a major point of contention between the two.) "He made a judgment and I respect that," McCain said.

Will McCain vote to confirm Mukasey ?
McCain not only knows what torture is, he knows the hypocrisy of those who ridiculed him for breaking under it. Those who did that, did it from unbroken bodies and untortured spirits. I know who they are. They are the worst of our society, though they call themselves the best. McCain will also be a hero of mine, for everything he endured.
And herein lies the death of the Republican party and the birth totalitarian police state.

The only non-chicken hawk, non-coward, non-draft dodger in the GOP line up - the ONLY person running for president who KNOWS what torture is can't get traction from the right wing.

The right wing in this country is 95% never-served, never sacrificed, no-nothing, holier-than-thou frauds no more worthy of being president than a carnival huckster or a dememted monkey*.

Come on, Brown Shirts - start calling him "traitor."

*And look how well that's worked out.
Once again, more bluster and BS by gasbag mccain - he will roll over and vote for Mukasey's confirmation, as he does with anything the ignorant cowboy wants. He is every bit as gutless as the spineless dems.
Yep, he knows its wrong but he will toe the line and confirm the new AG
Senator McCain is truly an American Hero.  Anyone who survives the torture he endured for 5 1/2 years has the character and leadership needed to make positive decisions for our country.  Not many today who would decline to leave a POW camp and stay with their men for 2 more years of torture.  Individucal issues surrounding this plan and that one will all be washed out in congress long before the future President will sign which bill.  The major question remains, whose character, experience, and voting record can match Senator McCain's and his independent, common sense conservative thinking.  I may not agree with everything he says or does, but he is the next Leader for America.  Vote for John McCain!
Since most of the Republicans running for Prez see nothing wrong with waterboarding (with the exception of McCain and Ron Paul who  are unequivical in their opposition to torture), why not subject the rest of this sorry lot to actual waterboarding and see how they like it.  Ask them some tough questions about their various claims and positions and see if they're really telling the truth while they undergo what they don't think is illegal and against U.S. law and the Geneva Conventions.  How can they really know what it's like if they haven't experienced what they apparently condone and support?  And make sure GW Bush gets to experience what he has allowed and authorized.  Afterall, he tells us he's a Christain and sees nothing wrong with it, so what's the problem?
The most interesting point was why McCain and Weyrich are on the outs, campaign finance, money for politicians and propaganda.
We now see that the wing of the party that supports morality is also the wing that wants to destroy the only veteran running in their party for making it harder for them to garner money, HMMMMMM.
Can we still believe that this block is interested in making america a moral beacon?
McCain may not be the best candidate but he is at least more honest than the others running for the nomination of his party.
Had to wait in line to vote yesterday, good turn out with blowing snow and white out conditions. It may be a sign of things to come, 75% of americans want change.
Well said, Lee in CA. There is no need to add to what you said; except to say that the so called moralists preach their beliefs in underwear.
McCain will earn some "cool" points if he votes no to this guy.  He knows this is torture and if he votes yes to this douchebag McCain then has no integrity.  The mere perception of waterboarding is "cool" will invalidate the Geneva Code and make our Armed Forces less safe.
Apparently McCain (as well as the press and the other candidates) did not get the memo.  The line-item veto was declared unconstitutional by the Supreme Court during Clinton's presidency.  Ergo, they can call for it all they want but it is ILLEGAL unless and until the Constitution is amended to permit it.

It makes me furious that the candidates use this as a talking point, as if it is something that they can magically make happen once they are elected.  They can't.  They have ZERO control over it.
Carrie,

On a separate angle, even if the line item veto were constitutional (or were amended into the Constitution), it would likely do little to curb the growth in federal spending that has occurred in recent years. Mandatory spending reform and restraint in overall discretionary spending will be essential to addressing the nation's fiscal challenges.

Pursuing structural reforms in mandatory spending will be highly controversial. A great deal of sober analysis, pragmatism and compromise will be required if success is to be achieved.
