Paul talks money, war in NH

Posted: Wednesday, November 07, 2007 3:52 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ's Mike Memoli
NASHUA, NH -- Ron Paul talked about money at a local high school this morning. No, not his record one-day fundraising haul, but the impact of a weakening U.S. dollar.

“We have this bizarre idea … that when Washington comes up short, whether it’s to fight a war or run the welfare state, you know what we do? We print the money,” he told about 100 students at Nashua South High School. “Now how much sense would it have to take to figure out that if you could just print money at will, maybe the value of money is going to go down.”

The result, he told the students, is a greater debt that they will inherit. And today, the impact is being seen in things like gas prices. “When you fill up your car," Paul said, "and it’s $3 a gallon, or $4 or $5 a gallon, don’t blame price gouging. Blame the government for a bad monetary policy and a bad foreign policy."

He warned that if no action is taken, “the dollar can lose a lot more value, which means prices can go up a lot more, the economy can get a lot weaker, the stock market could crash.”

All of his ideas were rooted in the Constitution, Paul said. But he recognizes that some -- like eliminating the IRS, and returning all funding of education to the states -- are unlikely to be achieved as president. So he said he’d focus on the one area a president has more leverage -- foreign policy.

“Very simply, we can come up with a program of saying mind our own business, bring our troops home, have a strong national defense,” he said. “At the same time, be stronger and wealthier, save this money, take care of the people that are needy, follow the Constitution, protect personal liberty, have a prosperous economy.”

He noted that war-making powers are given in the Constitution to the Congress. “We’ve never declared another war since World War II,” he said. “And lo and behold, what has happened? We haven’t won a war since.” Continuing commitments abroad, especially in Iraq, have made the military weaker and made us more vulnerable to a terrorist attack domestically. He also warned students that, with the administration seemingly preparing for war in Iran, there would likely need to be a draft.

Asked later by a student how he would withdraw troops, Paul said the sooner the better, but that it would likely take three to six months. “Just announcing that we were gonna leave, and that we were serious," he said, "I think there would be a de facto peace agreement."

An interesting note on the location -- Clinton is due to hold an event at the same high school later this evening.

Ha.. Dr Paul, keeping it real.  The only republican that makes a lick of sense.
Thank you for a fantastic non-hit piece.  You let Mr. Paul's quotes speak for themselves.

Paul - Tucson, AZ
how do those students vote?
Start spreading the word early, there is going to be a Ron Paul sign bomb and money bomb for the weekend of Dec 15th and 16th to coincide with the Bill of Rights day and the anniversary of the Boston tea party. The goal is to blanket the country with signs and also to raise the most amount of money ever raised for a presidential candidate in a single day. This will be the money Dr. Paul needs to make his last big media blitz before the primaries. The momentum from this new sign/money bomb will give him the push to win in New Hampshire and Iowa. Spread the word, if you dont have money then try to find two or three other people who havent donated yet and each of you give $10 dollars. If you dont have even that amount then print and cut out a bunch of little card size pieces of paper and spread them around your city, in book stores, grocery sotres, colleges etc... We have all done a lot already but we know that we can all do more.
Funny how he's been giving this (essentially) same speech for years, but now people are listening and reporters writing about it.  This, of all days, on the day that the DOW fell 360 points due largely to concerns over the falling price of the dollar.
Why is no one else talking about these issues? This is why Ron Paul is raising big $ and winning straw polls. We don't like being lied to about our economy or the "war".
Wow!!  I have to admit to paying attention now to what Dr. Paul is saying!!

I believe he has very vaild points!!

I had understood he would eliminate the DOE etc... I'm glad to see him acknowledge a president can't act unilaterally..

What else does this guy have to say, and why haven't we heard some of these things before?
The message is so simple, even a teen can understand it. Stop policing the world and stop "robbing Peter to give to Paul (at gunpoint)" here in the US.
ron paul states / “Very simply, we can come up with a program of saying mind our own business, bring our troops home, have a strong national defense,” he said. “At the same time, be stronger and wealthier, save this money, take care of the people that are needy, follow the Constitution, protect personal liberty, have a prosperous economy.”

how can any sane person argue against that statement?

I hope paul gets the repub nomination that way if hillary gets nominated I will still have some for whom I could vote.
Nice write up on Ron Paul's day and the range of his positions.
BUSH IS GOING TO BANKRUPT THIS COUNTRY.
Ron Paul is igniting grass roots efforts , I sing America the beautiful, god saves the world, Bush and Cheney killed in bizarre dogleash accident, Condi comes clean and admits she is in love with Laura and they move to a state with same sex marriage law, Rumsfeld proven to be related to Saddam, Republican party dies quick death as young create new party.
Some of these are real, some wishful thinking, you decide. Ain't Democracy GRAND!!!!!!!
Why don't they talk about this guy more on TV?  I think eliminating the IRS is the best idea I've heard in my entire life.
Ron Paul is the most honest man in government. His character is self-evident.  The will of the people will carry the day!  GO RON!
Evil Ron Paul. Feeding kids Jeffersonian libertarian propaganda. Even telling kids that we have a right to own the fruits of our labor and that therefore there should be no income tax. More power to him!
"All of his ideas were rooted in the Constitution, Paul said. So he said he’d focus on the one area a president has more leverage -- foreign policy."

So Mr. Paul doesn't really intend on abolishing the IRS? I still support him, but I must say this was a major selling point for me.
An honest piece on Dr. Paul and it should be commended.  Everybody should look at the candidates and choose the one they feel will shed the most light on the current system of government corruption.  Without honest government the promise of health care and the end of war is a hollow one.  I believe the only candidate that has a chance to do this is Dr. Paul.
Larry Brewer- Oh he "intends on it", he just doubts whether those goals can be achieved, it is washington after all...
ONE CAN ONLY HOPE THAT THE AMERICAN VOTERS CAN OVERLOOK THE FACT THAT RON PAUL DOESN'T LOOK OR SOUND AS SLICK AS SOME OF THE OTHER CANDIDATES.  HE SIMPLY MAKES SENSE.  WE NEED RON PAUL IN THE WHITE HOUSE.
Ron Paul does intend to abolish the IRS, but he is running for President of a Constitutional Republic, not dictatorial autocrat. He can't abolish the IRS without the Congress. He will work with them to try to get it done. He would also like to repeal the 16th Amendment so that never again will there be an income tax.
Larry, it is my understanding he will try. If he wins the election, it will show the Congress that if they want to hold their seats they had better recognize what the people want. If Ron Paul can balance the budget, redeploy our troops to our soil, and eliminate a few duplicitous agencies, we could afford to eliminate the IRS. I think that is very important to him, so I believe he will try to do just that. He does know how DC works and he will be able to do many good things, including using the bully pulpit of the presidency to spread to everyone the ideas of cutting spending, etc leading to the end of the income tax, and thus the IRS. Have faith, brother. He is a manof his word. His record shows that.

MK, in Missouri: You could register as a Republican and vote for Ron Paul in your primary. If Hillary is going to be a sure thing on the Dem side (looking more likely every day) Ron Paul might be our only hope in which case he still needs to win the GOP nomination. If changing your registration to Rep turns your stomach like it did mine, just remember the cause and vote for the man, not the party. Peace.
And by the way, the statement that he realizes those things cannot be done, seem like paraphrasing on the part of the reporter. I have never heard him once say he didn't think they could be done.
I think 6months to 2 years is more reasonable. But a lot better than 4 years like Clinton, Obama, and Edwards!
I think people will become more and more receptive to Ron Paul's message on monetary policy as the dollar continues to plummet.

I hope MSNBC will see the opportunity to combine your economic and political reporting.

There is a tendacy to blame the mortgage lenders for the current sub-prime mess.  The people need to understand the connection between an over-abundance of cheap money created by Fed monetary policy and the inevitable bubbles that result.

The people need to understand this and Ron Paul is helping to educate them.
When Ron Paul becomes president, the major changes, such as the IRS and DOE, will come after the 2010 elections, when Congress and the Senate are rolled over with people that will uphold their oath's of office, and return Constitutional power to the states.
This solidifies Dr. Paul "top tier" standing...

http://www.truthalert.net/Republican%20Presidential%20Candidate%20Rankings.htm

These rankings are in response to the absurd one posted by MSNBC affiliate National Journal.
Everyone should remember that the president can not pass law or repeal law. It takes an act of congress to pass, admen or recend laws. The supreme court can determine if a law is unconstitutional. The presidents greatess power is the Veto pen.
I agree Larry
"All of his ideas were rooted in the Constitution, Paul said. But he recognizes that some -- like eliminating the IRS, and returning all funding of education to the states -- are unlikely to be achieved as president. He may not have much ability to change it, but I hope that never stops him from bringing it out to the forefront so the PEOPLE can help make it happen!!
Spread the Ron Paul News to every one. The MSM TV ect.... are doing all they can to shut him off. If people hear his message he will win. We need him for president. Without Ron Paul this country will only get worse.
Thank you for writing about Ron Paul

He truly is a top tier candidate, and a remarkable American!
Larry, I think the point Dr. Paul was making was simply to recognize that the president can't singlehandedly eliminate the IRS -- he would have to go to congress.  However, by changing the foreign policy by bringing troops home from our bases in 150+ countries, he could majorly slash the budget.  This would probably increase the likelihood of congress being in favor of eliminating the IRS; if we cut spending enough, a very valid case can be made that the IRS serves no purpose!
Thank for posting this MSNBC, he is by far the best candidate running, I love his policies, some are a bit interesting but most importantly they have to get through Congress.. he will take a bipartison approach... His plan is to stablize Iraq and send in peace crops, secure ourselves here..

This man is brilliant, and doesn't take money from lobbyists or interest groups either

I'm a democrat but I swicthed parties for him.. I like that he was the only republican to say he would not support a amendment banning gay marriges.. He is for gay rights as well!!!

what a wonderful man!!
We are following Ron Paul eagerly, over here in Germany. We want to look up to America again. We want America to be herself again, rather than compromising her substance by copying the bad habits (state paternalism etc.) of the Old World. And we understand, only if liberty returns to the USA will it come to Europe (which lacks the constitutional tradition and hence the understanding and love of freedom of your country), and China and...and...all the other regions of the world that we want to be free, prosperous and peaceful.

Dear Americans, dear Ron Paul, take back your country, go back to building that shinning city on the hill. If you do not do it, no one else will. Only you have got it in you.
Dear Dr. Paul,

If the USA were to go back onto the gold standard we would be in a major economic recession, if not a depression, what with the price of and demand for gold as an industrial metal.

Please sir, what is the intrinsic value of gold? WHy do you want the USA to go on the gold standard, as opposed to, say, the tulip standard, or the silicon standard?

Perhaps, Doctor, you'd be better to stay to medicine and leave economics to those who have a clue...
Ron Paul is the Only candidate for President who deserves the Vote of the American people. Not only does he read the Constitution, he understands it!
When the Canadian dollar has not only caught up with the dollar but has completely surpassed it, the nation should be aware that something is very, very wrong.  Ron Paul is either the only one knowledgeable about the economic problems facing our country, or he's the only one willing to talk about it.  After hearing his message about the dollar and seeing what has happened, I tried to check out the various financial shows on the media outlets for more info.  Wouldn't you know it, it was relatively nonexistant.  Thank god for the internet and the information it provides that conventional sources don't.
"how do those students vote?"

They vote when the become adults. Until that time, their parents can hear them talk about how presidential candidate Ron Paul came to their high school.
Larry..the important thing is the conversation in Washington will change...from MORE MORE MORE BIGGER GOVERNMENT, to small government.

Frankly I believe he'll work his hardest to eliminate it by the end of his first term.
Larry: He'd like to, but he probably realizes that it's an unrealistic goal.
Larry,
Ron Paul can't eliminate the income tax on his own.  It will require the help of congress.  So get on the phone, call your congress person and let them know you support Ron Paul.

If he gets elected, he will be getting elected with a HUGE mandate, so yes it could happen.
He warned that if no action is taken, “the dollar can lose a lot more value, which means prices can go up a lot more, the economy can get a lot weaker, the stock market could crash.”

Didn't the Canadian dollar just pass the US dollar today? Why is no other politician talking about the dollar and the economy?!?!
I love this guy.

I'm actually going to vote this time around and I'm going to vote for Ron Paul.

Go Ron
Larry Brewer, he didn'y sya he wouldn't try, just that it may not be achievable.  I wish it'd go away too, I'd love a 20% pay raise!
Let's face it, Ron Paul's message is desperately needed. I hope he wins the Republican nomination, I really do. But whether that happens or not, we HAVE GOT to hear the truth about our absurd money policy. And hearing the truth, we've got to act. No other candidate has made this an issue, and now more than ever it's an issue that must be taken up by everyone in Washington!
Just because Dr. Paul says he will focus on foreign policy, does not mean he does not intend to abolish the IRS.  That has always been his intention, but will take much more work and time to accomplish than will changing foreign policy.
Believe me Larry, Ron will try. If we can elect him he will try. If we can UN-elect the House and Senate and fill those houses with people who share his point of view, he will succeed. It's sad to think of but it's on us, just like it always was. Only difference is now we have someone who'll stand at the bully pulpit on our behalf. Look on the bright side though - whoever we elect, we'll be getting exactly what we as a nation deserve.
If Dr. Paul had his way he plans on doing everything he has said he would do including getting rid of IRS.

What was not said is that although he wants to do all this he doubts Congress would go along with all of it unless we can get more Libertarians into the Congress.

ONLY A DOCTOR WILL HEAL Our Country,
Freedom4America
It's nice to see a fair article about Paul's campaign issues instead of the usual jumble about "who is this guy?" and "are his supporters crazy?"

It's unfortunate that the Constitution isn't a bigger issue for the other presidential candidates. I'm hoping that the internet presence and campaign support for Ron Paul incites real conversations about this over the next few months. I'd love to see these topics covered more frequently and answers requested from all members of our political system.
The mainstream of the Republican Party had better wake up to Dr. Paul and start treating him seriously, or else they'll have egg on their face when he wins early primary states.

NYC votes Paul over Giuliani!
Hi Bruce,
My understanding is he doesn't actually want to return to a gold standard but instead allow competing competing hard asset currencies.
