Romney: Rudy won't be pick

Posted: Wednesday, November 07, 2007 4:26 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ’s Erin McPike
HILTON HEAD, SC -- Reporters pressed Romney twice during a South Carolina swing on his reaction to Pat Robertson's endorsement of Giuliani and Brownback's support for McCain.

Asked if Robertson's declaration of support for Giuliani would help bring social conservatives to the mayor's candidacy, Romney deadpanned, "Not at all." He then slammed Giuliani with, "I don't think the Republican Party will choose a pro-choice, pro-gay civil union candidate to lead our party."

He later dismissed Brownback's support for McCain as something that was to be expected. "Sen. Brownback and Sen. McCain have worked together a long time," he explained.

But it was Robertson's support that merited a longer explanation from Romney. He waved off the impact by pointing out that endorsement announcements are abundant at this point in the campaign and he can't win them all. Asked if he had met with Robertson, he conceded that he had spoken at the commencement ceremony at his university earlier in the year but said, 'that was, gosh, months and months ago."

He also defended his support from conservatives and evangelical Christians by pointing to his own endorsements from both Paul Weyrich and Bob Jones.

ill vote for anyone who runs against hillary,  if i had my choice it would be Mitt.  i did not think much about him until i heard his speach about being mormon,  after that i think he is just what this country needs.  strangely enough i dont believe in god....go figure....
America in the last two decades has matured enough to look at the man and not his belief system.
Although I do not agree with Mr. Romney's political positions on gay marriage, abortion, the war in Iraq I have a developed a great deal of respect ( not enough to vote for him) because he is Morman and the courage and nobility he has shown in expressing his faith, even if it earns him political enmity.

By the way I am not a Mormon
I wish I could have the honor of voting for Mitt but I am canadian and hence will miss out.  I do follow yer elections carefully and mitt or obama are the only politicians that seem like real people.  I hope they face off against eachother as that would produce the finest speeches since Kennedy.  Mitt does have the upper hand with his sucessful experiences so perhaps Americans can shake the stereotype of being war mongering bigots. Mitt could finish off the war in Iraq with as much face saved as possible, but the bigotry test will come when southern "christians" vote for someone because of their religion or because of their policies and ability to lead.  Sorry John and Huck, but you really dont have what it takes.  Only one republican nominee has it and anyone who cant see that, is not looking beyond the surface.  Dont judge a book by its cover.  Isnt freedom of religion what America is founded upon?  Isnt not voting for someone based soley on their religion a from of restricting that individuals freedom?  what if it was your religion and people started harrasing u about your beliefs in empiracly unprovable points of doctrine.   Judge mitt on his record, policies, and ability to govern; little or nothing else matters.
Ive heard republicans say that they will vote for the democrats, against their own morals, or just stay home should Mitt be the canidate.  Well then flush your morals down the tube because if that is the case, they are not built upon a solid foundation.
