Huckabee’s ‘surprise’

Posted: Wednesday, November 07, 2007 4:55 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ’s Carrie Dann
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- Mike Huckabee is so darn folksy that sometimes it's hard to tell when he's laying the smack down.

Even Huckabee's penchant for plain-spoken humor couldn't disguise his subtle critique of Christian Broadcasting Network founder Pat Robertson for endorsing rival Rudy Giuliani. Asked today here to comment on the endorsement, Huckabee called it "somewhat a surprise to me."

Huckabee went on to imply that Robertson's decision might have been based on the success of Giuliani's campaign rather than his moral values. "People have become more process-focused than they have principles-focused," Huckabee, an ordained pastor, said. "They look at it from the stance of, 'who does it look like might be ahead of the game?'"

"I think that it's pretty disheartening to see that it's not necessarily based on people that you say, 'Gosh these guys really have the right principles,'" he added.

But despite the "disheartening" sentiment, the famously charming Arkansas governor took advantage of a volley of questions from reporters to pump his own momentum.   Saying that despite not winning a big-name endorsement like rivals Romney, McCain, and Giuliani all have in recent days, Huckabee insisted that he's building support right where he wants it, from "the salt of the earth."

And on the "surprise" of Giuliani's big-name get? "Politics is all about surprises," Huckabee said with a laugh. "And I plan to surprise some people on January 3rd in Iowa. That'll be the biggest surprise of all."

I am a Democrat but Huckabee is someone I could vote for.  It is interesting to see "Christians" line up to support candidates that do not share their principles.  Being a Republican must be more important that their principles.
Huck as the Preacher in Chief?
His platform is beyond belief,
With fed sales tax
immigration that's lax
The economy goes back to sleep.
Sorry, Rev., you'll not get my endorsement either. No pseudo-Bryans for me; let the Dems be the populists.
This is actually the one thing I agree with Huckabee on.. this endorsement caught me by total suprise.. Giuliani has to be the most moraly bankrupt person..

As for Huckabee he said he would go to war with Iran without approval from Congress, he also wants full amnesty for illegal immigrants and to raise taxes

Huckabee is no angel himself just ask people in Arkansas why they thought he did a horrible job..

and don't forget his pardons, one a convicted rapist
I and my circle of friends are not surprised, we're shocked! Giuliani believes that the slaughter of our innocent pre-born children is an issue that we can have a different opinion on, how ridiculour. It's like saying that if I don't like my neighbor enough and in my opinion I have the right to kill, it should be my right to do so. This is an incoherent position that cannot should not be tolerated. And we've just dropped Robertson down to the bottom of our poll of disrespect. Abortion is social suicide!
I don't agree with Huckabee on most issues, but he is right on the money with these statements.  The moral majority as represented by Pat Roberts has sold out for electibility, trading principles for poll results.
Instead of assuming that all of the negative things that we read and hear about Mike Huckabee are true, we should visit his website and learn for ourselves what he stands for. "truth squad".  www.mikehuckabee.com
huckabee a right wing evanglical christian is SURPRIZED by the idea that right wing evanglical preachers side with winnersand money over morals and ethics.. where the heck has he been?

there's never been a right wing evanglical preacher who is moral and ethical
Huckabee's platform: Vote for me or go to hell
Huckabee, an ordained pastor, said. "They look at it from the stance of, 'who does it look like might be ahead of the game?'"

--- You got that right Huck.  Pat is in it for the money and power and he sees Rudy as his meal ticket.

If it is a consolation, Pat Robertson has endorsed blood thirsty ruthless dictators in the past for enough money. "Zaire's dictator Mobutu Sese Seko" for a cut in a diamond mine and "Liberian tyrant Charles Taylor" for gold mining rights.
Of course, the "paulies" have taken over the comments again. Ron Paul supporters are the most hateful, bitter people on earth. It amazes me they want to vote RP into office because he says he will stop the war yet  his supporters are so filled with hatred. It's scary. It's disturbing.
You call that a smack down, hit me with a feather.
Huckabee should be the man for the evang right but he doesn't have any EM OH EN EE WHY!!!!!! I would have expected Mitt to get this endorsement but we all know what this group thinks of his beliefs. There is a power shift going on in the god movement and Pat wants a taste before the great beyond disengages him permenently. Even most god fearing people can see him for what he is, a moneychanger in the temple.
Tuck, are you moral and ethical?  Your statement is one of the most ignorant I have ever heard.

Andrew, at least give some example of your over the top post.

Why is it that these people are incapable of disagreeing without resorting to biased one-liners?
I seriously doubt any of the people posting negatively have gone to www.mikehuckabee.com and learned what the Governor truly stands for.  Very few people actually research anything before they post.  These comments are obviously not well thought out.  Either that or they are purposefully being misleading.

See for yourself at www.mikehuckabee.com
Andrew, NJ;

You nailed it, man. Huckabee sounds more and more self-righteous the more he calls himslef the "one" with values.
Andrew: No, he's never said anything like that, and you know that. Nope, he's not going to force his beliefs on anyone, but he does acknowledge that they have shaped *him*. That's fair, isn't it?
I think most athiests project what *they* would do on Christians. I mean, athiests would get in office and say no public prayer or even reference of religion anywhere. Christians are more fair than that - they'll allow Christians to pray as well as anyone else, because that's the Christian way.
Sometimes it's rather entertaining to listen to anti-Christians display their ignorance on the subject. They don't even take the time to know what we're about.

like Mike? Sign the Huckabee Petition.
http://www.iwouldvoteforhuckabee.com
Huckabee is moving up in the polls because people are tired of political warfare between 2 parties. Mike "turns the other cheek" and that drives the political crowd crazy. They spend so much time fighting each other, that NOTHING gets done.  Huckabee is a NEW BREED...intead of the jaded politian, you get a REAL person.  He's down to earth and likable.  People are TIRED of MILLIONAIRE politicians whose only goal in life is to give tax breaks to corporations and send the "little mans" job to Mexico, China, India etc...
I agree with Huck on most issues except immigration. And now that I am living in California and see what lax immigration can do to a state, I don't think I would vote for the Huckster in the primaries. I love that he is a Christian. But Pat Robertson is a sellout.
Huckabee is a decent man with the right credentials and a conservative history.  Too bad Robertson thought it was more important to pick a winner than to pick the best man.
Lex, I will ask all the Arkansas citizens who have signed The Huckabee Petition saying they like Mike. No one will please everyone, but he certainly hasn't displeased everyone by a long shot.

Check it out for yourself at http://www.iwouldvoteforhuckabee.com
Governor Huckabee,

I will back you for the nomination and for courage in standing for the "right" in American Politics and the Spiritual "right" in our hope for the future of America and the world.
It is sad to see Robertson sell out principles at the drop of a hat.  That is why we need a man like Mike Huckabee to lead our nation.  He long record of standing on the principles that he believes in; faith, family, and freedom.
There has never been a moral and ethical preacher?
How about Billy Graham?
Robertson and Rudy G. are nothing but practioners and devotees of situational ethics.  No one should be surprised.  Conservatives are only conservative if it fits their agenda of the moment. Robertson's smarmy little TV program is nothing but a sham to further line his pockets and Rudy's only more than happy to hitch his campaign to anyone who will prop up his disingenuous campaign.  Look for a proclamation from Roberston in the not too distant future that God has spoken directly to him and that Rudy is the Chosen One.  Pander, pander, pander.
It's obvious that many have not done their homework on Huckabee.  Please take the time to check out some primary resources versus regurgitating 2nd hand information (this includes his views on the "Fair Tax").

www.mikehuckabee.com
www.fairtax.org
Everyone has a right to criticize candidates they oppose but those who do should use facts to back up their claims, not just spew garbage that are lies.

Mike is not for higher taxes, he signed the pledge to not raise taxes, a lot of others haven't. He is for the fair tax which you can find out more about on his website. He supported the Bush Tax Cuts.

He is not for amnesty and publicly opposed the bill a few months back.

I guess when you talk about Arkansans hating Huckabee, that is why they voted him into office, not once, but twice with a clear majority vote in a very democratic state.

He has said repeatedly that he believes strongly in his religion and principles but has always said that this country is free and people are free to believe what they like.

Saying that all Evangelical preachers are corrupt or immoral is just wrong. That is no better than someone racial profiling or stereotyping which I am guessing you are against?

If you do not like Huckabee based on his record and his vision of America's future, then that is your choice but you are wrong to impose your misguided opinions on others, especially when they are lies.

Check Mike Huckabee's website for yourself and then make up your own mind.

www.MikeHuckabee.com
As a Christian, I can say that I am thoroughly disgusted with evangelicals like Robertson selling out principles such as an individual's right to life. If the government doesn't uphold and protect life, then what the heck is it there for? I think fear is what is driving this election cycle for Republicans: fear of Hillary and Islam.

Clearly, the neo-cons' fear mongering has infected this country and the Republican party. And God help us when our leaders are driven by fear rather than principle.
He wants a federal sales tax? Can't he just keep my paycheck and give me an allowance?
A funny (but true) column on what Huckabee is like face-to-face can be found at: http://goupstate.us/index.php/lanefiller/2007/11/02/title_14
Huckabee "also wants full amnesty for illegal immigrants and to raise taxes.
Huckabee is no angel himself just ask people in Arkansas why they thought he did a horrible." job.""

Do a little reearch: http://mikehuckabee.com The first  statement is blatantly untrue.  He assertively opposes amnesty and did when the immigration bill was under consideration.  And ask the people of Arkansas why they elected him THREE TIMES!
I listened to governer in waterloo iowa today- i can't understand why more people have not endorsed him!! he truly has my vote and one should check out the the truth squad- i did
"As for Huckabee... he also wants full amnesty for illegal immigrants and to raise taxes"

That is so completely untrue, yet people keep repeating it on these comments. He's quite clear that he is NOT pro-amnesty, nor does he think that taxes should be raised (he's taken a pledge to not do so). Read this interview with The National Review:

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/21596918/
Andrew; Grow up.
Tuck; Billy Graham (one of MANY)

For the few reasonable people left in the world go see what the man DOES have as his platform before exposing yourself a buffoon...and anonymous buffoon is still a buffoon.

If you read what he says and don't like it...then go vote for someone who you do like.
I had never heard of Mike Huckabee until I attended a National Teachers Conference where he was a speaker. Not knowing whether he was Democrat or Republican I was thoroughly impressed; the other politician to speak was the self-aggrandizing Orrin Hatch, who gave a semi-intelligent speech mixed with typical politician speak political cliches on education, but I was blown away at Huckabees clear minded insight regarding education, what does work and what doesn't work.
People should look past their prejudices for religious candidates and give his candicay ideas a second look; I have not seen a more clear thinking presidential candidate in my lifetime.
Mike Huckabee is an adroit public speaker; he communicates his message in life-like, cogent terms, with compelling examples like the story he told (at the Ames Straw Poll) of what his then-11-yo daughter entered into the "Comments" section of a Visitors Book after visiting the Yad Vashem holocaust museum: “Why didn't somebody do something?” Very effective.

Huckabee is all about calling his listeners to "do something," to awaken them to their own empowerment, and summon them to action in order that "Main Street," and not "Wall Street," will prevail in guarding the values and beliefs upon which the Republic was founded.

Huckabee puts his listeners at ease, and reassures them, articulating clear concepts in a natural, easy style (no doubt something well-cultivated as a pastor). He’s not as “mechanically-scripted” as Romney, nor angry or demanding, like a Ron Paul, and his large brown eyes, peering through a humble demeanor, draw a striking contrast to a unconvincing, tired-looking Thompson. One can easily imagine sitting comfortably with Mike over a cup of coffee at the Main Street Cafe.

Most importantly, Huckabee convinces many that he is ONE with the FairTax grassroots movement ( http://snipr.com/fthuckabeeonirs ). While many - like Romney, and others, who are invested in the current income tax system - seek to demagog ( http://snipurl.com/taxpanelrebutted ) the well-researched FairTax plan, its acceptance in the professional / academic community ( http://snipurl.com/econsopenletter ) continues to grow. Renown economist Laurence Kotlikoff believes that failure to enact the FairTax - choosing instead to try to "flatten" what he deems to be a non-flattenable income tax system - will eventuate into an irrevocable economic meltdown ( http://snipurl.com/meltdowninprogress ) because of the hidden aspects of the current system that make political accountability impossible.

Romney's recent WEAK response to FairTax questioning on “This Week with Geo. Stephanopoulos ( http://snipurl.com/stephanopoulosdebate )” drew a sharp contrast between Huckabee and all other presidential front-runners who will not embrace it. Huckabee understands that what's wrong with the income tax can't be fixed with "a tap of the hammer, nor a twist of the screwdriver."  That his opponents cling to the destructive Tax Code, the IRS, preserving political power of granting tax favors at continued cost to - and misery of - American families, invigorates his campaign's raison d'etre.

Of the FairTax, Huckabee asserts that it's...

• SIMPLE, easy to understand
• EFFICIENT, inexpensive to comply with and doesn't cause less-than-optimal business decisions for tax minimization purposes
• FAIR, FLAT, and FAMILY FRIENDLY, loophole-free, and everyone pays their share
• LOW TAX RATE is achieved by broad base with no exclusions
• PREDICTABLE, doesn't change, so financial planning is possible
• UNINTRUSIVE, doesn't intrude into our personal affairs or limit our liberty
• VISIBLE, not hidden from the public in tax-inflated prices or otherwise
• PRODUCTIVE, rewards - rather than penalizes - work and productivity

A detailed benefits analysis of the plan (from The FairTax Book) explains Huckabee's ardent advocacy:

For INDIVIDUALS:
• No more tax on income - make as much as you wish
• You receive your full paycheck - no more deductions
• You pay the tax when you buy "at retail" - not "used"
• No more double taxation (e.g. like on current Capital Gains)
• Reduction of "pre-FairTaxed" retail prices by 20%-30%
• Adding back 29.9% FairTax maintains current price levels
• FairTax would constitute 23% portion of new prices
• Every household receives a monthly check, or "pre-bate"
• "Prebate" is "advance tax payback" for monthly consumption to poverty level
• FairTax's "prebate" ensures progressivity, poverty protection
• Finally, citizens are knowledgeable of what their tax IS
• Elimination of "parasitic" Income Tax industry
• NO MORE IRS. NO MORE FILING OF TAX RETURNS by individuals
• Those possessing illicit forms of income will ALSO pay the FairTax
• Households have more disposable income to purchase goods
• Savings is bolstered with reduction of interest rates

For BUSINESSES:
• Corporate income and payroll taxes revoked under FairTax
• Business compensated for collecting tax at "cash register"
• No more tax-related lawyers, lobbyists on company payrolls
• No more embedded (hidden) income/payroll taxes in prices
• Reduced costs. Competition - not tax policy - drives prices
• Off-shore "tax haven" headquarters can now return to U.S
• No more "favors" from politicians at expense of taxpayers
• Resources go to R&D and study of competition - not taxes
• Marketplace distortions eliminated for fair competition
• US exports increase their share of foreign markets

For THE COUNTRY:
• 7% - 13% economic growth projected in the first year of the FairTax
• Jobs return to the U.S.
• Foreign corporations "set up shop" in the U.S.
• Tax system trends are corrected to "enlarge the pie"
• Larger economic "pie," means thinner tax rate "slices"
• Initial 23% portion of price is pressured downward as "pie" increases
• No more "closed door" tax deals by politicians and business
• FairTax sets new global standard. Other countries will follow

While passionately supporting FairTax, Huckabee understands that, if elected President, Congress will have to present the bill for his signature.  His call to action goes beyond his candidacy, Main Street will have to demand ( http://snipr.com/scrapthecode ) that their legislators deliver the bill.
these are all fake messages, people.  bunch of stupid political bloggers working for various campaigns to stir up the issues.  dont believe it.
Huck is the only reasonable candidate available.  Stop the slaughter of innocent children...a national sales tax instead of getting my wages taxed...allowing people to come to America for freedom, he is the best candidate and majorly needed for the Republican Party to shift views beyond limited government into a government that serves the people instead of uses the people.
Carl from Denver has it right. Huckabee is one who can not only unite the Republican party, but can unite the entire country.

Huckabee is not trying to slam Giuliani here. He simply is expressing surprise over Robertsons's endorsement because the general perception is that Robertson't principles typically don't line up with Giuliani's.

Huckabee is doing what I mentioned, uniting the country. He's gaining support from the general public who pay attention to his rhetoric and ideas. While I'm sure he would love to get the endorsement of key evangelical leaders, he also realizes that most people aren't going to vote for someone just because someone else is, also.
Think on the real issues: Border control. Gun control.Abotion.Finishing the job in Iraq.
Which one is doing what Reagan did? (I use Pres. Reagan as a bench mark to measure the people running for office.)We have a guy who was a mayor of a city. This IS NOT the United States of New York.Let's look at who has real government experience.WEho has real moral values.Who has been steadfast in the past. Look close at Gov. Huckabee! Real moral values lead to the life that we all want.
Huckabee did not pardon a rapist.  He was freed by a parole board.  Any other intelligent comments Lexie?
Please stand corrected and read Huckabee's stand on the issues! He is the only to state his stands in writing and does not waffle. He doesn't need handlers when he talks to the press- on the very incorrect statement "amnesty for illegals...."
The Huckabee's stand is as follows
"In this age of terror, immigration is not only an economic issue, but also a national security issue. Those caught trying to enter illegally must be detained, processed, and deported.
The Governor opposes and will never allow amnesty. He opposed the amnesty President Bush and Senator McCain tried to ram through Congress this summer, and opposed the misnamed DREAM Act, which would have put us on the slippery slope to amnesty for all."
You can take every thing negative that is said about Huckabee and stack it up against ANY other candidate democrat or republican and all the others will shadow over anything he has. He did not please everyone in Arkansas, yes, he made some very RICH and powerful folks mad. And those are the ones that are twisting the truth and making up lies. Like it was said before, go to his web site and read just what Mike has to say about all this. And if you really want to check things out do a little research for yourself and find out the real truth. But just because it was in the Arkansas papers, doesn't mean it was true. Some folks have the  news papers in their hip pockets too! But remember, Mike came in office right after Jim Tucker, who was dirty from the git go, and a Clinton man. Mike had a lot of disinfecting to do before he could get to work. The place was a dumping ground for dirty dealings. He had to clean house! Then go to work, and work for the  Arkansas people he did. He was Governor for over 10 years, now if he were all that bad would a state that is mostly democrat keep him? Would Time magazine pick him as Gov. of the year? He balanced the state budget 5 times and left office with a surplus of more than $800 Million!! I could go on and on but you go and read it for yourself. And if Pat Robinson is standing behind Rudy, then maybe it is a good thing he didn't pick Mike~ just goes to show ya what kind of man he really is. And we don't need someone like him. Mike has been the real deal all his life and he won't change or flip for anyone!! GO MIKE!!
Huck would make a killer VP. Romney and Huck..i'd feel okay with.
I have to say I'm a Huckabee fan.  After Mr. Bush talked so much about "compassionate conservatism," I think here's a guy who actually gets it, a guy who can talk convincingly about stuff like health care and the environment in a way that we've never heard a Republican do it.  This could appeal to registered independents (like myself.)  I do think he's still putting his foreign policy together, but what's sad is that he's too moderate for this party.  He's viewed as soft on immigration because he said some of the anti-immigration ferver was racist.  Well, let's be honest-some of it is racist, though I do think we need to secure our borders first.

I say we deal humanely with the people who are here, and not criminalize them.  He's said he will not tolerate sanctuary cities.  I do believe we should be deporting illegals who commit any crimes, esp. ones like drunk driving and the terrible killing of 3 afr. amer. college students in Newark a few mos. ago (their race isn't relevant except that as a Black person we have so many issues in our community that I find it especially egregious.)

I hate to say this but I'm afraid there are too many xenophobes and well, straight up rednecks in the R party to nominate a guy like Huckabee. The irony is that he's conservative on all the traditional issues, but he seems to be too open-minded and well-spoken on issues that the party has traditionally disregarded to be trusted.

I'm thrilled that he chose to attend the Tavis Smiley debate.  He'll probably have to endure being swift-boated for reaching out like that; when folks find out he got 48% of the black vote in his reelection campaign, I'm afraid many of the "old guard" will know something's wrong with him and not vote for him.  The country's 25 percent minority and counting- R's have to nominate moderates at some point, and who better than someone who can unite white and black evangelicals.  If Huckabee can get 90% of the Bush folks to vote for him and get 15-20% of the black vote, I think he could win.  The Reps just a few yrs. ago looked like they would be dominant for years to come, but I now believe they need a guy like Huckabee if they want a shot at the presidency.
"There has never been a moral and ethical preacher?
How about Billy Graham?"  Jed, Tampa FL

Read Nixon's Oval Office transcripts and you will find out that in conversation with Nixon, Billy Graham' statements show BG was stongly anti-semitic.
Like_Mike: Your statement "Christians are more fair than that - they'll allow Christians to pray as well as anyone else, because that's the Christian way" is ludicrous.  Christians only agree with Christian prayers.  Look at all the outrage whenever a person of another religion is allowed to give the invocation to open a session of Congress.  The "Christian" community goes ballistic because a Muslim or Buddhist is allowed to open the session of our "Christian" nation.  Tolerance is not a Christian value.
Whos Huckabee?
G, Huckabee is the GOP version, 2007-style of Howard Dean.
I just live these evangelical types.
Isn't there a bible verse "judge not lest ye be judged"? Yet here's the Rev. Gov being judgmental...

Like when he called people opposed to his giveaways to illegals "racists and demagogues"...

Sorry, Rev., I like my preachers a bit more honest and less judgmental.
Lex - none of your statements hold any truth.  Do you value truth?
The one thing people are failing to mention is that unlike other candidates Mike Huckabee is authentic. Whether you agree with him or not you can't disagree with the fact that he tells you exactly what he believes in.

Also by the simple fact that there are people bashing him who have not researched the issues on his Governorship in Arkansas (including getting reelected numerous times and only being sent out of office because of term limits) and the fact that Arkansas is traditionally democratic in their vote.

Not only can Mike Huckabee win the GOP nomination, but also beat the Clinton political machine because he has done it before.
