Two lives, two campaigns

Posted: Thursday, November 08, 2007 10:10 AM by Domenico Montanaro

*** UPDATE *** The Clinton campaign says, "The campaign spent $157 and left a $100 tip at the Maid-Rite Restaurant."

*** UPDATE 2 *** The manager of the of the restaurant tells First Read the Clinton campaign did, in fact, tip.

"They paid their bill, and they left a tip," said Brad Crawford, manager of the Maid Rite restaurant in Toledo, Iowa. "Everybody was satisfied. No question about it."

From NBC’s Domenico Montanaro
Clinton used in stump speeches the story of a waitress, who waited on her at a lunch stop in Iowa -- a single mother who works two jobs, one at the restaurant and one at a nursing home. But the waitress isn’t so thrilled with Clinton or her campaign.

“I don't think she understood at all what I was saying," Anita Esterday told NPR, adding, "I mean, nobody got left a tip that day."

Clinton was also never given a bill -- “her meal was on the house,” NPR reports.

“Turns out the visit hurt Esterday in another way. The local paper ran photos of her with Clinton. She said her supervisor at the nursing home isn't a big Hillary Clinton fan, and she thinks that may be related to why her hours were almost totally cut. Now, Esterday is looking for a different second job.”

"It hasn't helped me. It's made things worse," said Esterday, who added that she is still considering voting for Clinton, but might choose Obama.

NPR also tracked down Geri Puteney, a woman who, during a question-and-answer session, began crying when she told Obama the story of her brother dying from cancer. Obama walked over to comfort her and held her hand. "I know what this feels like," Obama said, adding later, "Tell your brother we're thinking of him. Maybe I'll write him a note before you leave today."

Puteney said she sought out Obama after seeing his television commercials. "I'd seen the commercials," she said. "And he just seemed sincere, like he's for people like my mom, my brother and me."

Obama never wrote that note, but Puteney seemed OK with it. “He didn't have time, I guess," she said. "I understand. You know, he was bombarded by so many people. But just knowing he knows -- that's more important than a note."

Hillary Clinton.  Hurting everyone she touches.
"She said her supervisor at the nursing home isn't a big Hillary Clinton fan, and she thinks that may be related to why her hours were almost totally cut."
-- I am going to take a wild guess the supervisor is Republican. They like being bullies. They like using power for political retaliation.
I applaud Iowans for their wisdom in seeing through manipulative politicians.  Hillary is fading fast in Iowa, and the rest of the country would be wise to pay close attention to this.

Let's vote for true change in America.  Welcome to the Obama Camp Ms Esterday.  We are very happy to have you.
God LOL.....

So now we know Hillary is not only a cold heartless little woman, she also gets people in trouble at work.

Of course the woman probably has legal recourse to go after the nursing home (you can't go after a person based on their political beliefs, though that is hard to believe in here sometimes).

She won't even leave a tip for the poor waitress even though the meal was on the house, which means she doesn't care about the middle and lower class people of this country like she claims she does.

Obama didn't write the note, but at least he shows he has a good heart.
Nuanced:

I doubt Hillary will be getting any donations from the waitresses anytime soon.

If I knew Hillary was going to my restaurant, I'd ask the manager to change my work area so I wouldn't have to serve her.  What a cheapskate.

Hillary:  It's 15% for a tip, stick a crowbar in your wallet and give her a tip!
Isn't Hillary hiring 100 new staffers in Iowa, she should hire Ms. Esterday, its only fair Hillary screwed with both of her jobs. No TIP thats just wrong.
make no mistake hillary has no need for commoners, she only cares about herself and her elitist buddies, which is understandable because she has never known poverty or trying to work for a living
nuanced: How are you just going to assume that the boss is republican? He may be for another Dem candidate. I guess with your blind hatred you couldnt figure that out. You are one of many problems that we have today in our politics. Your automatically against anything Republican no matter what it is. Even if it will be in your best interest. The phrase "Opposition Party" needs to go away. People act like politics is a football game. You say political retaliation. What the hell do you think the Clintons deploy constantly? All politicians will retaliate in some way if they could.
though I cannot stand Hillary for a variety of reasons, I think it is wrong to punish someone for their politics.  If I was her boss I would not punish her for being in a picture with Hillary.  that is just wrong and I'd think illegal.
But, Hillary has never really understood the people.  That is why I support Obama.  He is my senator and I know he does care about the average person.

POCKET CHANGE

I was mortified on the 3 or 4 occasion in my life that I forgot to leave a tip and I always remind others in the group if I see them not leaving a tip. For me it is like automatically putting on my seat belt when I get in a car -- a no-brainer. It is hard to imagine why Hillary did not think of it -- traveling in entourages too much?

Reminds me of a story I read about how Richard Nixon never had any pocket change and how the Secret Service had to supply the coins when needed.

Also reminds me of the movie "Dr. Strangelove" when Col. Bat Guano didn't have coins for the pay phone to call the President because he didn't carry pocket change into battle.

Might be interesting for interviewers to ask candidates to empty their pockets to see if they carry change.  Steven Colbert had Dennis Kucinich empty his pockets on the show.
Liberals. Looking down with contempt on those below, and up with envy since 1960.
".....She said her supervisor at the nursing home isn't a big Hillary Clinton fan, and she thinks that may be related to why her hours were almost totally cut. Now, Esterday is looking for a different second job.”....."

That's interesting.
So now the right wing extremeists are going to BULLY you into campaigning and voting for THEIR candidates. It is for THAT very reason you need to vote for Hillary!!!!!
If the Boss at the nursing home treats the staff like that, how are the patients treated? Sounds like a warehouse to me.
jerry,

I might add that it is expected that a tip will still be paid on the amount of discount coupons or when the meal is on the house.

People may not like the tip system (I hate it) but we must take the world as it is and not penalize a hard working person for our philosophy. The substandard minimum wage for restaurant workers and farm workers must go.  BTW, France has done away with tipping by law.
Bet if there was a Chinese dishwasher working in that place Hillary would have given them a tip......

And an envelope for where to mail that tip to.......

Anita Esterday isn't the only working person Hillary will hurt !!
Hillary is for Hillary and the special interests.
Hillary is a 'corporate baby'

Hillary's true colors are starting to show.
She got a free meal, huh ?
Well, she's entitled to it, right Carrie ?
She's Hillary Clinton !!

Let's see if Hillary can answer any questions honestly in the CNN debate.

Hillary Clinton, 15 years of dishonesty, scandal and divisiveness
This makes a good story, but I have to wonder if there might not be more to it.  In fairness, could there have been other contributing factors that led to this lady having her hours?  I'm a little skeptical on this one.
LOL....

Let's see the bill.......

Unless they put it in the Clinton Library where nobody can see it till 2009....
See, anything she torches like George Bush end up being a disaster.

Poor Hillary Clinton, she just can't help herself. She want to use the lady for a photo Ops and end up causing the lost of her job.
This reminds me of the woman who lost her job in '04 for having a Kerry bumpser sticker on her car. Not to mention the US Attorneys fired for not prosecuting enough Democrats to suit Karl Rove.
Gregg said "nuanced: How are you just going to assume that the boss is republican? He may be for another Dem candidate. I guess with your blind hatred you couldnt figure that out."

--- just a blind poking fun political jab at the other side. I guess I've been around this board too long and it is rubbing off on me. I do disagree with your statement on all politicians retaliating if they could. I guess I am not as cynical as you are. Touchdown!!
This is news how? Other than its lets jerry and dave vent about how much they hate hillary and love the bush days of cratering stock markets and spiraling oil prices
Gimme a break!  Another bash Hillary story.  Really, this is getting old.
We await Randall Rolfe's opinion with baited breath.

Van
sometimes i wonder if journalist do a little investigation about facts before priting or diffusing. If Hillary Camp is righ, a quick phone to the restaurant management will have clarified this considered issue
BTW, back in 2004 I was asked by my boss to either remove my John Kerry bumper sticker from my car or not park my car in the company parking lot because he feared retaliation from customers (I parked in the adjacent lot).  To pre-empt Gregg -- yes I think the same thing would have happened if it had been a Bush bumper sticker.
I have to correct a typo.

I meant to say, In fairness, could there have been other contributing factors that led to this lady having her hours cut?

Sorry.
Correction

I meant to seay could there have other contributing factors that lead to this lady having her hours cut?

Sorry.
Well, how about that?  She DID leave a tip after all.
jerry why do you do a little research and call the restaurant to check on that or maybe you can wait for the FEC filing to say that showing up.
You know if they had been in Chinatown, HRC would have probably gotten a $1000 donation out of her!
Bet if there was a Chinese dishwasher working in that place Hillary would have given them a tip......

But only if he, and each member of his family, had given the expected $2300 donation to Clinton. Hillary would have popped for a $1.50 tip in that case. Of course, because she doesn't carry cash, she'd have one of her "people" do the honors.
What gross reporting, and only after the fact do they correct that the campaign actually paid for the meal and left a tip... If this isn't a bias report I don't know what is - good thing we actually have campaign laws that prove that Senator Clinton isn't the Wicked Witch of the East - like MSNBC likes to report her as...
Instead of blaming Hillary, remember they said the lunch was on the house. So her supervisor should not act that way, that is called intolerance for someone else opinion. If they didn't want Hillary there, i believe we are still in a free country, they could have said no, thank we do no want your business. I do not even see why this is news. As far as the article can tell, she was there to eat and talk with her, which is last time i checked still legal and fine to do in this country.
This is not the first time Hillary pulled a dine and dash.  Mrs. Clinton stiffed a single mom waitress in Albion, NY when she was running for the Senate– ordered breakfast, ate, and no tip– none! In fact, she's pretty much stiffed all of Western New York since she's been in office.

Big deal she'll be voting for Clinton anyway when she gets the nomination. A NON story.
By their fruit, ye, shall know them. Let us do analysis on Senator Clinton's spending.

Clinton's Spending Plan
Money Spent on Food = $157
Money Spent on Tips = $100
Total = $257

Common Sense Spending Plan
Money Spent on Food = $157
Money Spent on Tip (15%) = ~$24.00
Total = $181

Based on this analysis, Senator Clinton spend 42% more - and this can be amount to wasteful spending.

The moral of this story is simple, if you elect Senator Clinton, expect the pork barrel spending to go up. She is going to be the pork barrel in chief. Her private behaviour surely reflects how she is going to spend tax payers money.
None of this matters. We will have Hillary Clinton as our president. It is inevitable. It is in a vision.
Remember, a new poll of Iowa out yesterday has the caucuses tightening significantly, as Democrats are now within a few points of each other: http://www.campaigndiaries.com/2007/11/new-poll-shows-iowa-tightening-as-well_08.html
Carrie

Sounds like she left a very nice tip! Reports like this are why I remain so skeptical of much that is said in this campaign.
Jerry, do you leave a tip at snoppy's?
What a crock of RUBBISH.  I do not believe one word of this stupid, waste of space, STORY???  Was the Big Bad Wolf and Little Red Riding Hood eating at the same greasy spoon?  And the dish ran away with the spoon!!! Did they pay for the dish and the spoon?

Politics at it's usual, stupid, crappy, mean, petty
propaganda hits.
Sloppy reporting all around. Apologies accepted. Shame on us for believing everything we read.

Cynical mode engaged. Expect skeptical comments on ever news item.
Psychic: Did your vision tell you that you were a damn fool too? What an idiot.
Hey Bee, maybe HRC felt some sympathy and compassion for the waitress and decided to tip her a little extra, ya know? You have heard of people who give beyond the required tipping amount haven't you? I know that I sometimes give a little extra tip if I know that the server tells me that s/he is going to college or has a hard luck story like this Iowa waitress.

You Hillary haters (and that includes NBC management by the way) really are so OVER the top in your derision of HRC. NBC needs to issue an apology to the HRC campaign IMMEDIATELY for their failure to report this story accurately. I know you guys at NBC including Chris Matthews, Chuck Todd and Tim Russert hate her, but this latest stunt has just lost you a valuable viewer. A viewer that watched most of the MSNBC lineup regularly; a viewer that has tivo and thus gets tracked by Nielsen and other polling data daily; a viewer that makes a decent amount of income and plans to tell MSNBC advertisers why she is going to boycott their products if MSNBC keeps this garbage up. I've had it with MSNBC!!
the hillary campaign handlers apparently had to make a rather hasty trip back to the dinner after this was released to the press to control damage, at least the waitress finally got her tip, that hillary is a class act
Bee
At first you complain she didn't give tip and was puting the woman in jeopardy, now it is proven she gave tip, and now you found the tip too much. As far as i know tip is let to te person will. I ate at olive garden one time and was so pleased with the waiter, i gave 20 dollars for a receipt of 50 something. maybe she gave tip for the waitresses ( i mean all them). I am pretty if she gave somethimng smaller you will have fault her too on that. Make cnstructive critics. I always like your comment but sometimes it is just overboard.
What gross reporting, and only after the fact do they correct that the campaign actually paid for the meal and left a tip... ------------------------------------------------------EXACTLY-I guess this crap is to fill a slow news day, fills the need of nasty tidbits to spew at the lowly masses.
Please people (mk,mo), how long ago did she mentions this story and if they gave the tip today, they will have said that. Read the second update from the store manager.
A good reporter should have checked the story before reporting. Nowadays it seems like journalism = gossip
