The latest war-funding battle

From NBC's Mike Viqueira
It's once more unto the breach for congressional Democrats tomorrow, when they will try again to pass legislation that would require a troop withdrawal to begin immediately.

Speaker Pelosi just announced that the House will be voting on a package that would give the president only $50 billion of the $196 billion that he has asked for to conduct the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. And it comes with strings attached: The president would be required to begin a withdrawal immediately, with a goal of having all troops out within a year. Under the plan, troops would be permitted to stay behind only to protect the diplomatic mission, for counter-terrorism operations, and for training Iraqi forces.

The $50 billion would be a "bridge fund" for four months, at which point the Congress would consider sending more. Recall that March is the time when Gen. Petraeus indicated he would next re-evaluate troop levels.

The legislation is quite similar to previous attempts by the Democratic Congress to limit the president, all of which have either stalled in the Senate or been vetoed by the president.

Asked this morning whether this is an attempt to mollify her base, or if she has discerned a change in the political climate, Pelosi got testy. She launched into a passionate condemnation of the war and the president's policies, but did not say whether or not she thought it had a chance to become law, this time.

Check the latest general election polls from Connecticut and Pennsylvania, as both states are WAY close, especially with Rudy. Link: http://www.campaigndiaries.com/2007/11/morning-polls-is-there-any-state-that.html
Even if it passes both houses, it will never become law.  The Republicans will refuse to break with Bush on this issue, and his veto will stand.

But at least it is a step in the right direction.
Congress and the Dems will fail on this as before with $-Iraq; Attorney General, etc, etc.  What is most needed is legislation to place Members of both Houses on Steroids.  If any group needs a dose of testosterone it is the clowns WE keep hiring and who, instead, do the job of the lobby goup who pays them.
These funding bills are always interesting to watch. Pelosi starts with the same old song and dance, and in the end, the President gets more money then he asked for [to cover the pork].
Polls don't matter. Hillary will be our next president. My vision was clear.
So in other words, pelosi is playing politics with our soldiers lives....

What a sick puppy she is.....

Just withdraw them all now......

That way the American people can hold the democrats personally responsible for the oncoming bloodbath.

Wonder which side of the issue Hillary is on?
This time Democrats make "W" VETO the bill and show some backbone. No waffles please......
>>>>>Under the plan, troops would be permitted to stay behind only to protect the diplomatic mission, for counter-terrorism operations, and for training Iraqi forces.

Uh - that's what they've been doing for 4 1/2 years - and certainly Bush will "leave behind" 150,000 soldiers to continue the war of choice for war profiteers.

Not one cent.  Not one DAMN cent for Bush and his bloody (literaly) wars.  If we can't afford to insure our children here at home, we can't afford a Ga-zillion dollar boondoggle of a war!
I just hope the Dems have the nads to push HARD on this this time.
It makes me sad to live in a country that was founded on the belief that you stay with something until you have reached your goal, no matter the cost.  Now we seem to live in an age where any cost is too much.
I would make the shrubster keep coming to the congress hat and excuses in hand monthly for more blood, oops i mean war money...
JUST DON`T GIVE HIM THE MONEY.
PLAIN AND SIMPLE, TELL HIM NO .....NO MORE FUNDS
UNLESS IT IS USED TO BRING THE TROOPS HOME.

HOW HARD CAN IT BE TO JUST SAY NO!!!!

IT WORKS FOR THE DRUG PROGRAMS.
MAYBE THEY ALL NEED TO GO TO REHAB:)
TO LEARN THIS LESSON.
JUST SAY NO TO bush.
BUSH IS GOING TO BANKRUPT THIS COUNTRY. $200,000.00 A MINUTE TO BE IN IRAQ. $6.00+ A GALLON FOR GASOLINE ECT. ECT ECT. ECT. ECT. 1 MORE YEAT OF THIS, AND WE WILL BE IN A DEPRESSION.
If you want this war to end, get off your fat ass and write ,e-mail or call every Republican Senator ect. demanding an "immediate" withdraw of our brave troops. Thank you and have a nice life !
I have hopes for this, at least. As the wife of a soldier who is deployed in Baghdad, this is the only hope I have. I feel like the sacrifice of my husband, and myself, are in vain--for a war that shouldn't have happened. I'll be praying that this legislation passes. Write your congressman and senators if you have an opinion on this, it really makes a difference!
More waste of time. Congress cannot fade Bush. Bush just brushes his shoulders off everytime they come at him incorrect. Gotta love the man. Dont like his policies sometime but he stands firm, something that a lot of politicians lack. Bush doesn't give a damn about the next poll. Im an African American and I guess Im not suppose to like Bush...oops..because he doesn't like black people......at least that is what the democratic party tells me. Well I say, I vote for who the hell I want to.
BTW: Dont preach Iraq to me. I was one of those soldiers for 20 yrs and retired this month. You guys in these blogs doesnt have a clue in hell about what is going on in Iraq. Half of the damn Congress hasnt even been to Iraq nor Afghanistan but yet they always have some smart a*& opinion.
No Jerry,it has been our own president who has played games with our soldiers lives. He is responsible.
No Jerry,it has been our own president who has played games with our soldiers lives. He is responsible.Stop lying Jerry.
jerry/corpus christi texas you should know what side your girl friend is on. She is on both sides. She also likes both kinds of music; Country and Western.
jerry, no one is playing with our soldiers lives more than the person who sent them there.  At least someone is trying to get them out, instead of an open-ended quagmire that continues to claim their lives.  You should think about the soldiers and their families before regurgitating the same mantra as the people who put them in harm's way.
George W. Bush should be made to split the costs of the war in Afghanistan, which is in response to the attack of 9/11/01, and the cost of the war in Iraq, which is a mssive military blunder based on Bush's lies, deceit, dishonsety and immorality.  Congress should then fund the war in Afghanistan, and fund the debacle in Iraq, only what is necessary to begin the removal of our Troops.  George W. Bush should have thought about the "oncoming bloodbath" when he recklessly committed American troops to his war in Iraq.  As surely as George W. Bush is 100% responsible for the 4,000 dead American troops and untold hundreds of thousands of dead Iraqis and Coalition troops in his Iraqi debacle, he will be held responsible for the inevitable outcome of his quagmire in Iraq.
Ms Bell, can you tell me what the goal is this time?  WMD? Al Qaeda? Get rid of Saddam?  Or is it that we just haven't secured the oil quite yet?  You need a goal to be able to reach it and we do not have one in Iraq.  Note that there is no problem with funding the effort in Afghanistan...
I just hope the Dems have the nads to push HARD on this this time.

Class Warrior, D.C.

And why should this time be different?  And, let me guess, you'll be voting for these nad-less wonders in the next election?  This is why the Dems should not be in charge, no nads.
Keep going after him dems, go after Bush until his suckup republicans finally tell him no more!!
just do it
Once again my posting did not appear because I questioned the moral fiber of the Media.I will repeat very simply,Please Journalists, save us from this Madman. We,and you were duped into this immoral slaughter.Since we are facing our worst fears of a terrorist nation with nukes, you must stop being branded as a traitor by printing dissent, and give weight to this crises.I will not verbally joust with my Fellow bloggers over anything that does not concern our country under duress.I have posted as doc/lewisville,it is now docrock,tx as I hope to rock your world and help face our danger. No more blood and money for oil.Bring our sons and daughters home.We are all Americans,so when we disagree, please be intelligent, decent, and fair.Liberty must be preserved, and dilligently protected. Please media,be timely and truthful,as we rely on your insight.

We know the Democrats do not have the votes to override a veto of this bill if it should make it that far in the legislative process, but this measure serves as a message that needs to be sent.

"The $50 billion would be a "bridge fund" for four months, at which point the Congress would consider sending more. Recall that March is the time when Gen. Petraeus indicated he would next re-evaluate troop levels."

Given the fact that General Petraeus validated President Bush's policy in Irag when he made an earlier report, I wouldn't expect any recommendations from him (Gen. Petraeus) that would be contrary to  President Bush's plans and strategy this next time either.

Leaving "troops behind for counter-terrorism operations" is a large loop hole to give to this President.  Wouldn't we be maintaining the status quo?

Bloodbath ? WTH has been going on over there for the last 4 1/2 years.I'm with Ron paul on this one, leave and they have no choice but to start acting like mature adults because there be no one to pull them apart or protect them from lashing out at one another. Comprimise or Die.
Jerry only knows how to regurgitate fox news, Beck, Limbaugh and all the other right wing neo nuts. He does not have an independant thought process if his life depended on it. Pavlov's dog, kool aid drinker extrodinaire, Hillary and Bill basher, and other same old tired talking points. Jerry you are so predictable. Please go on vacation and spare at least for awhile your echo chamber AD NAUSEUM.
Jerry, so you think the Democrats will be responsible for the so called bloodbath upon leaving Iraq.  I guess that using your logic, the Republicans are responsible for the bloodbath that has occured over these last 5 years......I'll take my chances with the former.  At least the bloodbath won't include our soldiers....
anybody who is lying is this poor excuse of a speaker of the house.  The only reason she stays in the news is because she lives for killing our troops with her dribble and drool type support for our enemies.  Nancy pelosi is in charge of the worst congress of all time, her policies are dangerous not only to our children but to our troops as well.  She is almost as bad as Hillary when it comes to the middle class; they do not care about the little people, just like Hillary not tipping waitresses, Nancy does not care about anybody that does not give money to her campaign.  If Vice President Cheney is to be impeached, Nancy pelosi should be right by him; for impersonating a speaker of the house.
Sydney H, Fort Campbell, KY - My thoughts and prayers are with you and your husband...we'll keep trying the best we can to bring them all home safely.  Unfortunately, we may have to wait until this president is out of office.  I hold GWB personally responsible for the lives of the 3,800+ soldiers that have died for his war and for the many many more wounded and psychologically damanged. He may not be held accountable here on earth but someday he will have to answer for his crimes.
More waste of time. Congress cannot fade Bush. Bush just brushes his shoulders off everytime they come at him incorrect. Gotta love the man. I do so love it when someone with a name screaming for attention preaches at everyone else, and then insists we have no room to talk.

It is admirable when people act upon their strongly-held beliefs as to what is right and wrong.  I'm not saying Bush is a bad person for having strong beliefs.  The problem with Bush is that he refuses to admit mistakes, and he is so damn determined to be right that he won't allow anyone else to contradict him.  He insists on consensus, and that is exactly how we ended up in the mess in Iraq.  Differing opinions are suppressed, so all he hears about is how great his plans are...when the reality is that they stink.

There is nothing admirable about that.
I think we should all leave 'Jerry' from Corpus Christi alone; he's part of that 'special' group of 19% of Americans that still think Congress and Bush are doing a good job.

Anyways,  so it sounds like Pelosi (just like Hillary), and most democrats, want to only keep troops in Iraq to defend all our bases, fight 'al queda', and to train Iraqi forces.  Isn't that exactly what all our troops there are doing now?  Any politician that 'just' wants to keep troops anywhere to fight terrorism is saying in effect they 'just' want to continue to occupy any country we've invaded where there is any sort of armed resistance.  Because remember people, if they don't wear a uniform and are not part of an 'army' for another country, anyone that attacks our troops is considered a terrorist.  So that includes any resisting populace that doesn't appreciate an American presence.  This same line of thinking meant heroes from the Revolutionary War were terrorists.
BIGOLDTEXAN: '...JUST DON`T GIVE HIM THE MONEY.
PLAIN AND SIMPLE, TELL HIM NO .....NO MORE FUNDS
UNLESS IT IS USED TO BRING THE TROOPS HOME.

HOW HARD CAN IT BE TO JUST SAY NO!!!!...'

My thoughts, exactly, BIGOLDTEXAN
I must admit it's a HIGH RISK political strategy...
Bite the Bullet !!
Don'T pass a funding bill for war !!
"Dont preach Iraq to me. I was one of those soldiers for 20 yrs and retired this month. You guys in these blogs doesnt have a clue in hell about what is going on in Iraq."

Oh really where did you serve? What division? What outfit? I think your full of crap just like the rest of the bureaucrats in DC. I unlike you served in 1St Marines-1st Battalion-25th Regiment-B Company and did my time in Fallujah. And I’ll tell you anyone that really served in those operations will tell you what a dam mess things are over there. If you really did serve you weren’t with the rest of us on the front lines I’ll tell you that.

We could care less about what people were saying back here because we fought for each other…that’s it. But I will say this I fought so people can have the right to say what they think on boards like this and everywhere else. If you try to suppress that then your no soldier I would want to share a fox-hole with.
No Jerry, there are only two people directly responsible for the total disaster in Iraq:  George W. Bush and Deferment Dick Cheney.  The "Commander in Chief", and the Puppetmaster.  It's their war, they're running out the clock, and then on Jan 20, 2009 they'll run off to Texas and Wyoming with not a care in the world.  Shameless.
Follow the model of the Viet Nam Occupation. Stop funding right now. Get the helicopters on the roofs and claim victory. We as a nation survived Viet Nam and so did a whole lot of soldiers who would have otherwise died like a dog in the street.
I still say we need to force the cheerleaders and chickenhawks on the right to sign up and go fight instead of sitting around teliing us all how tough they are.
I totally agree that Nancy Pelosi is a dismal failure, and should be removed from such an important post.I do not agree with the Cheney impeachment. He should be tried for high treason. We must leave divisive Politics behind us and unite to end this dead end policy that has cost all involved much too dearly.Once again I say this conflict wikk end ONLY when it touches every person in America personally. If we must get attention through financial hardship, put the cost where the blame lies.Make every gallon of gas cost a $7.50 minimum to pay what we fighting for(oil),so that our grandchildren do not.Re-instate the draft,so that EVERY family has a child involved with this insane occupation, and make sure there are NO deferments.Period.If you are physically unfit to fight, that does not mean you cannot be a clerk,or at least serve our wounded vets.Make every state begin it's own draft to re-man their own National Guard,so that disasters do not have to be catastrophies. We can survive as a Nation only if we are united. So once again,I implore the Media to report the news, not create it.I would much rather hear discussions on how to regain our footage, instead of whether or not Brittany wears underwear,or who O.J. beat up,or who Keith Richards may be snorting. The truth will allways out,and the Tree of Liberty must be tended to.Please America, stop the insanity and take back OUR government.
Thanks Tampa,
That is the same thing I got from students who were there. Thank you for your service, god bless you and all the troops. I wish we could hear from more troops, more information than body counts, and pictures of people shopping is not information.
Vietnam had its body counts every week, didn't seem to make a difference. People shop and try to work during a war, The media would have us think they put their life on hold and celebrate when they see them doing the things they need to survive. The media has hidden behind feel good stories and ignored what is really going on, I trust them as much as the White House to be truthful.
Pacheck - Follow the model of the Viet Nam Occupation. Stop funding right now. Get the helicopters on the roofs and claim victory.

What do you figure Pacheck, 5 million minimum killed in the subsequent genocide?  Probably 10 million.  Worst case, 20 million.  You okay with that?
Tampa, my buddy, Will, also a marine, served in Fallujah and he echos your sentiments exactly.  My son was all over northern and eastern Iraq escorting and guarding an Army officer and he says it was a damn mess pretty much everywhere.  That's what we are hearing from friends and family that are serving over there now (for the second time).
Did you fall out of your rocking chair? An occupation has nothing to do with main battle field line troops! It being all summed up, Our troops have been turned into cop's! The mission ended with the destruction of the Iraq Government and military! The military commanders are just puppets directed by the congress. Why again, should our armed forces be subject to mraningless duties and harms way for the Washington self serving Paper Hangers? Washington only see's our troops as numbers, they never met the troops, will never remember their face,  Have no comment on the daily KIA list, continue to be he!! bent on funding this war!!  ""Just where is the trillions of dollars gotten from the sale of Iraq OIL to fund this war!!! Is this war funding in total being paid from American tax money?

A soldiers life is priceless! But Washington self serving Paper hangers are running the show again!!!

The Democrats are so timestuck in 2005 and 2006 that they haven't realized that events in Iraq have made their pathetic call for surrender irrelevant.
I think congress this time around will be able to over ride a Bush veto on a war spending bill, Most of the republicans in the senate are up for re-election and now they feel the pressure to keep there jobs. Bush no longer has any sway with the American people and they know he'll be an anchor around there necks if they continue to support his policies.
Any republican that continues to support Bush on his war policies knows that they will most likely be voted out of office, for the republican senators it's a matter of self preservation.
I think Jerry is getting desperate.  Next he'll be crying and stamping his feet in a tantrum.
