Bill: Health-care failure was my fault

Posted: Thursday, November 08, 2007 2:02 PM by Mark Murray

From NBC/NJ's Carrie Dann
GLENWOOD, IA -- During a stop here today, former President Bill Clinton made the following comments:

-- The failure of his Administration's health-care plan was more his fault than Hillary's.

-- There are countries, like Argentina, that have had female presidents. He added that he thinks his wife is going to win the general election by a large margin. Her gender, he said. will be a big asset, in part because a woman can balance things better.

-- Referring to the Swift Boat ads in 2004, he said that Republicans like to make Democrats look like cartoons.

*** Update *** Here's what Bill Clinton said exactly on health care: "She has taken the rap for some of the problems we had with health care the last time that were far more my fault than hers. Let's just face it. We couldn't raise money. This time, when you let the tax cuts for upper-income people expire, it'll create a pool of money that wasn't there last time. We told her she had to get to universal coverage and there would be no new money. She had to figure out how to do it. She also was very vulnerable to a Senate filibuster last time. Because they were on the 'just say no to Bill Clinton.'"

Amy B:

What hasn't Bush taken responsibililty for?  You might not like what he's taken responsibility for, but he has not tried to pass the buck to anyone else.  And these are big important things.

Initially, until he stopped lying about it, Bill Clinton couldn't even take responsibility for an unimportant thing.
Jeez, "willie" or "willy"? We'd better get that major policy issue settled quick, so the conversation can go on.

Every time the health care debacle is mentioned, whatever the context, it reminds me that the greatest political mind in the history of the presidency couldn't pass legislation when the president, the house and the senate were under Democrat control.  And until now, he always did let Hillary take the rap.
Carrie,

You strike me as a smart gal.  But, seriously, it shouldn't be so hard and require so much typing on your part to support a candidate.
She is sucking the life out of you.  How many more polite, yet subtly condescending, posts can you write?  You gotta be getting pretty tired.

I know you like Biden and while Biden doesn't get as much press, he never disappoints.

Come on over to our side.  Once you go Biden you never go back.

(and I am being serious......she just had her second planted question after her campaign vowed earlier in the day they would be planting no more questions....I am just saying think about it)
Any OTHER Democrats totally underwhelmed with the Clinton Obama Edwards choices?

Me too...  I am really thinking seriously about Ron Paul..

The HONESTY he would bring.. along with divided government...  New Conservatives hate him, and the dems don't like him... But they BOTH share some things in common..

Might be nice to see the Congress come together for the people and pass legislation over RP's veto!

But as for Clinton (Monarchy) Obama (rhetoric) or Edwards (socialist)... not to mention ANY OF THE REPUBLICANS... other than Paul...  ugh!
Bill Clinton is a patriot and knows better than anyone why the country need Ron Paul.  But again...  Hillary is a lost cause so things will work out just fine.
FYI Bee, the nickname was "Slick Willy" not Slicky Bill,

I hear you carrie but you get the point

I thought his comments were charming. When has Bush ever sincerely taken responsibility for anything he has done?  I miss Bill!
