Obama sits down with seniors

Posted: Thursday, November 08, 2007 3:45 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ’s Aswini Anburajan
OTTUMWA, IA -- On Day Two of Obama’s “Change You Can Believe in Tour,” he sat down with senior citizens in Ottumwa, Iowa to discuss retirement security. The discussion, which focused on the importance of saving for retirement and the difficulties of living on social security, allowed Obama to present himself as a candidate who could appeal and relate to an elderly class of voters.

Obama also criticized Clinton for criticizing a bankruptcy law that he said would have hurt American consumers. Just yesterday, Obama introduced a smorgasbord of proposals for the middle class, which included a proposal to strengthen bankruptcy laws in favor of consumers. Obama has increased his outreach to seniors in recent weeks. He has campaigned in rural areas, discussing the importance of keeping young people in these communities, which have seen dwindling populations. He also gave a speech propose to protect social security just two weeks ago.

Today, he released an ad entitled “High and Dry” that features an Iowa man, Dave Hartgrave, whose says his pension was cut to $379 per month when his company, Farmstsead, decided to pull $19 million from its pension fund. Workers received only 25 cents on the dollar for every dollar they should have received.

The case is an older one, dating back to the early 90s, but with Enron still a household name, it remains relevant for most Americans. The ad and the roundtable allowed Obama to underscore his message on special interests. On the stump, he says he is the only candidate in the race who has a significant body of legislation that has taken money out of politics, touting legislation he has passed with Republican Tom Coburn to make government spending transparent and his ethics reform bill with Democrat Russ Feingold.

The event was followed by a town hall in which Obama took questions about pension security, the war in Iraq, and why he was a better change candidate than the other Democrats in the race.

NOTE: Ottumwa is the hometown of Radar, the fictional character of the TV show MASH.

did obama show up to vote?

Obama is looking better and better. After the NH poll that had him cutting Clinton's lead by 13% yesterday, he is at the highest he's ever been in a Zogby Iowa poll in today's release, trailing Clinton by only 3: http://www.campaigndiaries.com/2007/11/new-poll-shows-iowa-tightening-as-well_08.html
Obama's far superior ground operation in Iowa is going to surprise the world.  Imagine the power of an Obama ticket coupled with VA Senator Jim Webb (former Reagan Navy Secy.).  That would be unbeatable.
NO MORE BUSHS/CLINTONS................End This War!!
NO MORE REPUBLICANS/CLINTONS..........End This War!!

Best Ticket: OBAMA/EDWARDS '08..........YEAH BABY!!!

Was Radar there?
Obama had ideas but we don't get to see what they are, only people of Iowa, WHY?
He is not resonating, numbers down, is that because all we get outside of Iowa is the daily catfight?
More info., less baby poop!
>>>>he says he is the only candidate in the race who has a significant body of legislation that has taken money out of politics

This may be true - BUT Corporate lobbyists and PACs have funded Obama's political career in Illinois and the U.S. Senate.
He only began rejecting their bribe money in 2007 - basing his campaign on "changing Washington."
No thanks!

John Edwards has NEVER accepted their donations - and is not indebted to them for PREVIOUS donations.
I am in my seventies and have seen many presidents come and go.  I believe Sen. Obama is the best chance we have for both my generation and my children and grandchildren to have the best shot at life possible.

And it will be unbelievably refreshing to have a honest and hard working man in the white house.
Obama and Hillary have each received $1M from hedge funds!!

6 months ago, Edwards proposed raising taxes on hedge fund managers.
Did he talk real loud to them?
Raise a NEHI orange soda in his honor. ..... incoming!
Living in the midwest (illinois) I have seen people, friends and family, who have been in the same position as this man in the ad.  The company takes the money due to these people so they can go overseas and leave the lifelong worker sitting without any financial cushion.
Right now, my husband and I are looking at this very thing coming at us in the next 6 months.
NAFTA and all free trade has destroyed so many people's lives who did everything they were suppose to and they are now looking at nothing.
I blame the Clintons as much as I do bush for this with their policies that did nothing more than help the corporations at the expense of the middle class.

You will not get this seniors vote.  You have done nothing for Illinois.  You have sold our jobs overseas, you have given all of your support to illegal aliens and forgotten Illinois citizens.  You have not dropped the Illinois suit against Homeland Security.  You have not shown respect to our flag.  Members of my family have served in WW II, Korea, Vietnam.  You have direspected our Country, our Veterans and our Flag.   GO HOME.  MAYBE YOU WILL UNDERSTAND WHEN YOU ARE SENT PACKING. OH yes and you don't want English to be our official language.

Tuck, Realityville-every comment you makes literally makes me vomit. You are such a racist? That is the only reason why you don't like Obama. You focus all your attention on bashing him. Please just take your white sheet outside the closet, poke holes in the eyes and nose and start marching!!!
