Clinton camp plants question

Posted: Saturday, November 10, 2007 12:12 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ’s Athena Jones and NBC's Domenico Montanaro
At a campaign event in Iowa, the Clinton campaign approached a student to ask a specific question of Hillary Clinton.

“They were canned,” a Grinnell College student told her campus newspaper, the Scarlet and Black. “One of the senior staffers told me what [to ask].”

NBC News confirmed that the Clinton campaign did, in fact, "discuss a possible question" with a student.

“On this occasion, a member of our staff did discuss a possible question about Senator Clinton's energy plan at a forum,” a campaign spokesperson said. “However, Senator Clinton did not know which questioners she was calling on during the event. This is not standard policy and will not be repeated again.”

*** UPDATE ***
From NBC/NJ's Athena Jones

DES MOINES, IA, Nov. 10 -- On the eve of the Jefferson-Jackson dinner, a huge Democratic event in which the top six candidates for the party’s nomination will have a chance to shine, the Clinton campaign admitted to a not so stellar act.

Grinnell College student Muriel Gallo-Chasanoff told her school publication that Clinton staffers had approached her before the senator’s speech on biofuels Tuesday in Newton, IA, to suggest she ask a question on global warming during the Q & A afterwards.

Clinton began her response to the student by saying that young people often posed this question to her at events. She then went on to talk about her energy plan. When asked Friday night whether they felt they had “planted” the question, the Clinton campaign’s Mo Elleithee gave the above response.

It’s an interesting admission in a campaign that has long-been accused of trying to stage, manage and control events, and it came a day after the senator held a roundtable discussion with seven supposedly undecided voters at a ski resort in the White Mountains region of northern New Hampshire.

Clinton’s campaign said they found the voters through the usual canvassing -- knocking on doors and making phone calls -- and that all of them were undecided about which candidate to support. But one of the participants, Bonnie Campbell, said before the roundtable began that she was already a supporter and that the country needed a woman president.

“I believe in her,” Campbell said. “I think she’ll do a good job.”

Campbell said the campaign called and asked her if she knew any undecideds she could bring to the discussion -- which consisted of each person asking one question and the senator responding with nuggets from her speeches.

Campbell brought her daughter, Holly Reville, 39, an Independent, who said she was choosing between Obama and Clinton before the event, but was leaning toward the New York senator by the end of it.

wow she's just like all the other canidates! who knew?
Right, it's not standard policy.  Keep digging that hole Senator Clinton, by Jan. '08 you may reach China!!
Devious. The Clinton's are not honest. Nothing new. Why do you lefties want this manipulative duo back in the White House?
While BIDEN is making speeches regaring the growing threat from Pakistan CLINTON is planting questions.

"This is not standard policy and will not be repeated again."

Because you were caught.

The Clintons are creepy.
So what!! Every politician every where on the planet does that. The question was a question that interests everyone. Big deal!!. So waht if it is scrpited. All presidential speeches are pre-wriiten and not impromptu speeches.
But haters of candidates make every effort to kill. This is like chaos in middle east or Pakistan.
Undecided till Nov 2008,
As much as I would like to support Hillary - this kind of stuff keeps surfacing.  It is just the way the Clintons operate.  I am going to just move on and find someone else to support rather than having to defend this behavior for years to come.
“One of the senior staffers told me what [to ask]"
Do not we all voters are barked at (to get attention) by the Media pundits how we have to think, why we have to vote or not vote particular candidate?
Look at number of Political Pundits (totally polarized fanatically) in the media whose goal is only to plant their dogmatic views (mostly self serving) on voters mind?

Wake up voters. Do not listen to these craps like  ” that one is holier than other”. All politicians in one way or the other are crooks. It is the last resort to scoundrels.
You got to choose the one that is least harmful to this great country; you have plenty of time to do that – a year. Till then, just watch the fun. Do not get planted.
ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! how hillary clinton is still leading in the national polls is still a dumbfounding question to me.

WAKE UP AMERICA! WE NEED A PRESIDENT WHO WILL TELL THE TRUTH. NOT PULL A FEMA! OBAMA 08!
woh woh wo..here we go again.
What annoys me about all this, how the media brushes these things under the carpet! If Obama or Edwards had done this, it would have been on the front page headlines. And MSNBC is right on top of the rigged media list.. you guys even kept Gravel out of the recent debate!!
I don't think planting a question is a first only from the Clinton camp. I recall about a year or so ago when the press caught the Bush bunch prepping a few troop members on what to say when Bush asked them a question, and if it sounded off key to what they wanted to hear, they groomed them how to answer.so maybe[since we're talking politics]there's a diference between grooming,as to planting?
Obama's and ROmney's questions aren't faked? My god are you all fools?
Obama and Romney's questions aren't faked? My God, what are you all smoking... have you heard the softballs their worshippers, er , supporters ask?
Another ethical dilema for Clinton's campaign.  See, this is what i have been talking about all year long. Honesty, Integrity and Good Character is not in Clinton's play book
Oh for Ch----'s sake, First Read...we are on the verge of using nukes in the middle east, the climate is changing, American power is waning and you choose to focus on the pettiest issues in the Presidential campaign. On par with Russert's debate question for the Presidential candidates "What's your favorite bible verse?" The real news in the US residential race is that many in the media are morons.
this is a big deal?

lol...only to those who already don't like hillary. this is nothing any other candidate doesn't do...on both sides.

get a life and find something with substance to complain about.
The conversation with the student was at the event site, just before the event.  It was not in some dark, back room.  The student wasn't planted--she was there of her own accord.  No specific question was given to the student, she was asked if she would ask a question about global warming and energy.  She did not protest or express outrage, but readily agreed to ask such a question.  At a forum on energy.  Other audience members were permitted to, and did, ask whatever questions they wanted.  And those questions were all answered by Senator Clinton.  Only persons with an agenda would think there's a story here.  And those getting their butts kicked in the polls.
lol.. maybe the got the idea from FEMA.. the only honest candidate that seems to be running is Ron Paul..
Clinton = Scandal = Another 4 or 8 years of no leadership = Disaster for America.
I don't think the country can't take another four years of Democrats being stuck defending the Clintons. For all the good things that happened during Clinton's years; a lot wasn't accomplished because of the partisan fights that where happening.

Stuff like this keeps coming up about Sentar Clinton. And Edwards has similar problems.

To me the only two electable democratic candidates who ALSO could govern in peace are Obama and Biden. That's it. I hope one or the other wins the nomination because they're the only two I have emerged from the campaign repecting.
Hillary Clinton is NOT leading the polls.  This is the beauty of the left wing press.  They PLANT false numbers and when the real ones come out, they feign surprise.  Remember in 2004 when most of the polls were showing Kerry ahead of Bush, surprise! Bush won!! and not by a small amount--his popular vote was quite large.  People please don't believe these polls (with the exception of Rasmussen)and his poll shows Hillary in a dead heat with Romney and Giulani and Thompson, this contest is far from over and I predict the republicans will win. Why? because we don't want to be tax'ed to death by the democrats in congress.  Some balance is in order. One question still eludes me and if any democrat or independent can answer, perhaps I will change party affiliation. If simply throwing money at a problem (without demanding that people change their destructive lifestyles)is the answer as domocrats often do,then we shouldn't have all of these pressing problems with healthcare, social security, etc. because the dems have been in control most of the time and they've always raised taxes but the problems never seem to go away.  WHY?? Perhaps if we go back to the old-fashioned way of hard work and teaching our children values maybe, just maybe we can get a better group of kids who will lead this country back in the direction that will make us proud.
"Politicians always lie cheat and steal!"  "Politicians always fake questions and stage events!"

---
I thought Hillary Clinton was running to CHANGE Washington.  WE NEED CHANGE!  America is SICK AND TIRED of "Politics as Usual", and Clinton just keeps confirming the fact that she is Bush-lite.  FEMA Press Conference caused someone to be fired.  But it's ok for Hillary to do it!  It's OK for Hillary to beat the war drum with Iraq, and refuse to talk directly with Iran (that is both Giuliani AND Bush's Iran policy- RESEARCH IT if you don't believe me), but if Bush does it, it's baaad.

It's time for REAL CHANGE.  NEW GOVERNMENT.  NEW WASHINGTON.

BARACK OBAMA '08.
Well, that's it for me. I thought Hillary might be different than Bill but this is proof that she will stoop to just about anything to win. This is why at the debate last week she stumbled so badly over the Illegal license question. It makes me wonder in all the forums that have been on the news, just how many of the questions/answers were staged with canned questions. Now I have to look to Obama or Rudy.
This little nugget is an absolute outrage!  When the public goes to see one of our candidates for president they expect truth and honesty at all times.  A public forum is not a staged television show!  It is not a fake reality show!  NO ONE should be coached at any time at any one of these events.  When the question-answer session was taking place, how many of the people there had any inkling that there was prior prep?  Or was it left unsaid and most people there thought Hillary Clinton was actually answering spontaneous questions from the audience.  This is deception pure and simple.  There can be no defense.  And even more incredulous is the spin that the Clinton campaign is putting on this.  Even saying that is one only this one time.  That is like my child saying "Mom, I only was bad this one time, honest."  Yeah right.
We need honesty and transparency in our next presidency.  I don't see that happening at all with Clinton.  I am, as I said at the beginning, absolutely outraged.  This is unacceptable in any presidential candidate - and the other democratic candidates are NOT doing this at all.  Maybe I am naive for believing this, but I believe that Obama and Edwards are exceedingly honest with the public.  We might not always like what they say, but at least they are not trying to deceive us.  This incident to me is a disqualifier for Clinton to become president.
Simply put, she fears answering a question she is unprepared to answer. She already freaked out and accused someone of being a plant two months ago. She can't answer direct questions at a debate. Dems, wake up and elect someone else or the republicans will be back in the white house. For reals.
Unreal--the Clinton's are slimy folk.  George Bush looks like Ghandi compared to the Clintons.
The Clintons bring way too much trouble with them.  If the country really wants a break from Clinton-Bush then people need to wake up and find better individuals to vote for.  You can expect more of the same from the Clintons if you vote them into office.
Guess what Barack Obama is a liar too.. he takes money from lobbyists and then says he doesn't.. he is no different then Hillary and he only made 25% of the votes in Senate.. He's just like Rudy and Hill vote for anyone else besides these three
Hillary Clinton:

  Phony questions
  Phony first lady
  Phony wife
  Phony senator
  Phony presidental candidate

Nothing but a phony.

Anyone that votes for her is a phony too.

PLANTING QUESTIONS NOT A NEW PRACTICE FOR CAMP HILLARY

"Another Question Planted by Clinton Campaign

Another Question Planted by Clinton Campaign
Illinois Minister Tells ABC News That Clinton Staffer Asked Him to Pose a War Question

By ELOISE HARPER
Nov. 10, 2007

One day after Democratic Sen. Hillary Clinton's campaign confirmed that a staffer planted a question for the presidential candidate at a recent campaign stop, another person has come forward with a similar story.

Geoff Mitchell, a minister who recently moved to Hamilton, Ill., from Iowa, told ABC News that he was approached this spring by Clinton's Iowa political director Chris Haylor to ask Clinton a question about war funding.

Mitchell, 32, said that the request "this did not sit well with me in the tradition of the Iowa caucus."

"I grew up in Iowa and I value the tradition of the caucuses of answering the questions of the people," Mitchell said.

Mitchell said he introduced himself to Haylor because he had heard of him before and knew that he had worked on Indiana Sen. Evan Bayh's campaign.

Before the campaign event, Haylor asked Mitchell if he would pose a specific question about Iraq. The question was about how Clinton would be tough on President Bush about funding the Iraq war, Mitchell said.

The event, however, ran out of time before reaching a question-and-answer period.

Mitchell said he figured that the Clinton campaign was looking for an opportunity to highlight the difference between her position on Iraq and her Democratic rival Sen. Barack Obama's position on the war.

The Clinton campaign confirmed to ABC News that Clinton's staffer and Mitchell did speak about a possible Iraq question.

"Chris Haylor and Geoff Mitchell knew each other and they started talking and the subject of Iraq came up," Clinton spokesman Mo Elleithee said, "and Chris suggested that he ask a question about Iraq."

The revelation today about a campaign-prompted question comes just one day after the Clinton campaign admitted to planting a question this week in Iowa.

amir anaheim CA  Plants may be the way things are done in California, but not in Iowa. The reason Hillary has an "Iowa problem" as her campaign calls it is because we can spot a phony, and Iowans ask tough questions. Blindly support Clinton if you want, but I prefer judging candidates on their actual accomplishments, and their candor. Hillary lacks in both departments, which is sad, because I really wish I could support her.
lying stinking demencrat
Iowans.. you are blessed to scrutanize these candidates more closely than others. Ask them hard questions and see if they can answer it right. We need a decent, honest and non triangulating president who can speak the "inconvenient truth". As for HRC, she has none of these and will not get my vote. BARACK OBAMA looks promising and I will switch to him. I hope the Iowans send him to the rest of the cauceses.
Ha!  I guess spontaneous questions were to much for Clinton, she's gotten mad at the questioners in the past.  I suppose that planting questions makes it easier for somebody with >50% disapproval.
its no big deal in itself.  but the pattern she's set is the problem.  bogus laughing, bogus position taking, bogus contributions, and now bogus questions.

and she's not good at it.  she can't pull it off like bill.  she's just not that likable.  she's not going to win the nomination.  the party is starting to sense that she's unelectable, as all NE Liberals are these days...even the ones from Chicago...lol.
If the dems want to lose, they should pick her.
But edwards is your man, dems.  he's kinda phoney too, but southern democrats are your only hope.  don't believe me?  ask bill clinton, jimmy carter or LBJ.
PLEASE ELECT HILLARY!!!...Then maybe she'll return ALL the White House furniture they stole when Bill left office...

-------------------------------------------------------Amy you are 100% on target here. The time wasted on the drivel is astounding, and it is a ploy to see what will stick and what will "energize" the fools on this board. If ya play the game they win so ignore is the best tactic.  Let the trolls entertain themselves. I see from the past six months that the serious and intelligent poster have been absent for some time now. I count barley 5 left and they too are sporadic, as you are, come back we need real issues.

wow what do you know...clinton is afraid of answering questions. Im starting to see paterns here. Why is she so afraid of us? Is it that she doesnt know her stance on issues? Or is it that she is afraid of answering questions that she cant prepare for. Interesting...
Will the MSM media report this deceitful trickery, and not just try to pass it by on a blog, but will NBC, ABC, CBS, CNN, MSNBC, NPR give this the coverage it deserves or will all be swept uder the proverbial rug, along with all the other secrets of that Clintons have concealed. Why is the MSM afraid of the Clintons?
Well, the Clinton supporters are getting a little scared now.  Hillary's moving down in the polls, has given up winning Iowa, and her campaign is crumbling. It is real tough for her suppoters to watch their herorine go down the tubes. Face facts though, she has never really had it, and really has never had a chance.
In response to the statements 'all campaigns have plants'- I challenge you to name another 2008 Presidential candidate who has done it.

Don't give me your opinion that they all do it- without proof to back it up.

Until then- only the Clinton camp does it- as has been evidenced.

Don't accuse everyone of her mistakes to make yourselves feel better
Stacy S. Medford OR and Bobby Iwabucci:
I couldnt agree more.  You guys hit it right on the head.

We need a real change
Hm, maybe if she doesn't win the election she can go to work for FEMA and participate in their fake news conferences.

You can't trust ANYONE anymore, from the smallest town mayor to the President. *sigh*
