Rudy camp: 'Bull's eye' on Feb. 5

In the wake of new polling showing Romney’s lead expanded in New Hampshire, the Giuliani campaign stressed it’s not all about the early states. They went through the numbers and broke down mathematically how the front-loaded primary calendar -- complete with the capstone Feb. 5 delegate treasure trove --favors Giuliani.

“If you look at that number of delegates,” Giuliani Campaign Manager Mike DuHaime said in a conference call with reporters, “there’s a tremendous focus on Iowa and New Hampshire… but again, I feel very, very confident, if you do this as a delegate game, this very much lines up very favorably for us.”

But momentum can be very key. Romney has a solid lead in Iowa and has consistently led in New Hampshire. South Carolina is a close race between Thompson, Giuliani and Romney. If Romney were to win Iowa and New Hampshire, the campaign hopes that would pave the way and the current leads Giuliani has in Feb. 5 states would tighten, if not fall away.

DuHaime argued against that notion. “Some of those leads are momentum-proof at this point,” he said. He stressed Giuliani’s margins in the New York tri-state area of New Jersey, New York and Connecticut versus what he called Romney’s “precarious” lead in New Hampshire where he is known, having been governor of neighboring Massachusetts.

“Mayor Giuliani’s “momentum-proof” national polling lead, Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny all walk into a bar…,” Romney spokesman Kevin Madden begins in a statement in response. “You’re right. None of them exist.”

DuHaime, though, emphasized, “There are multiple paths to the nomination. We see the possibility of two paths. We agree with the possibility of the momentum of early states or we would not be focused on them. We’ve taken a longer approach. It’s not just a Feb. 5th strategy.”

Madden argues that Giuliani’s national lead in polls will not necessarily translate into Feb. 5 support. He said that Romney “is perfectly positioned to be competitive in the early election contests,” but also in the Feb. 5 state of Florida, where, he said, they are seeing a “positive trend line emerge.”

“Mayor Giuliani continues to hang his hat on national polls that show him garnering around 30 percent support,” Madden said, “yet fully 100 percent of the electorate knows who he is. That is a very big gulf to have between the number of voters that know him and the number that actually support him. …For Mayor Giuliani to have 100 percent of Iowa voters know who he is, yet only around 11 percent of those voters support him...that's a major problem for his candidacy.”

Giuliani strategist Brent Seaborn doesn't see it that way and stressed Feb. 5th's significance. “We have a recognition that the early states are important," Seaborn said. "But there’s no single point that’s close to February 5th with the total number of delegates. There’s no point in this campaign where you have essentially all the delegates you need to win on one single day. It’s hard to miss that that day’s gottta have a bull’s eye around it in terms of its importance.”

NOTES: How much is Team Giuliani hoping Huckabee does well? Take this from the call:

“We’ve really seen the rise of Governor Huckabee, and he’s putting together a very strong campaign,” Seaborn said. “He’s going to enter the states here in the last stretches as a real candidate. He’s challenging Romney in some polls. I feel good about where we are in Iowa. The way we see it, Romney has a big infrastructure there, invested a lot there. We have a very good field program. We’re in a battle with Governor Huckabee there for second place. Certainly, Fred Thompson would like to do well there, but he hasn’t gotten it going.”

After all, a strong showing for Huckabee, a social conservative, would further split the conservative vote, likely hurt Romney and Thompson and buoy Giuliani.

This is an absurd argument! How can Giuliani hope to survive January? The latest poll from Florida shows that even there Romney has some major momentum: http://www.campaigndiaries.com/2007/11/sunday-roundup-florida-is-as-tight-as.html
The assumption that Mike will garner votes only from Mitt and not from Rudy is silly. Mitt and Mike will have a lot of the evangelical vote already, I think it will be the fred voters who will be changing the numbers and I don't see many of them voting for Rudy, and Rudy is in for a drubbing when the news gets more specific about Bernie and company. Remember, those energizer batteries don't last forever.
I can see the similarities between Rudy and Clinton. They are both knuckle heads who have been hyped up by the media.

I am very sure Rudy won't be the republican nominee.
With the latest dialogue coming from either direction, I can't tell if Mitt has converted to Evangelical Christianity, or the Evangelicals have converted to Mormonism. But what I can tell, no matter which direction it's actually going, is it's a prime example of 'Evolution'. Just an Independent observation.
Huck is not a trophy buck.  Fred is taking a nap and neither are in the cross hairs any more . Rudy scratched on the 8 ball Pat Robinson, GAME OVER . Mitt's perfect storm is on the horizon .Do you think there is time to throw in another bloomlet ?You can spin but you can not hide.I will bet you a nickel Romney will give his JFK speech Sep 2008  just before the election like JFK did.

I consider myself a conservative. I'd vote for Hillary Clinton before I'd vote for Mitt Romney. I'd least I'd know where she stands.

anyone with an ounce of brains should be able to figure out that giuliani is nothing more than an egotistical moron who is totally impressed with himself. just what has he done, that ebtitles him to blow his horn so loudly? he acts as if he is some kind of a hero because he walked the streets of new york city with with a mask on and attended a bunch of funerals. does he not realize it's because of him that so many lives were lost. he was warned by many department heads after the first world trade center bombing in the early 90's to move the command center out of the world trade center because it was at risk if another attempt was made to destroy these buildings. but, because he thinks he knows more than everybody else, he refused to do that. we all know what happened because of this. after the towers were hit and all hell broke loose, communications between the police depts, the fire depts, and other security depts was non existent. all because of his stupidity. and yet, he, like bush is trying to make people believe that he is some kind of a hero. why are the fire dept and police dept talking against him if he was so great. he killed more of these brave people than anyone at any time, similar to what bush has done to our men and women in this fiasco in iraq. they are both banking on the fact that there are still people out there will stay with them simply because of their party affiliation. what a shame. guiliani can't control his own personal life let alone the lives 0f 300 million people. then there's his good friend, bernard kerik, but, that's another story. sounds more like bush every day. we should all remember, we are not electing a president of new york city, we're electing a president of the "united states"
Hilary Clinton?..Who would want to look at that face for four years?..,even her husband found it difficult.I say it's time she starts baking those cookies...

It will be a very sad day for America if Giuliani becomes the GOP candidate for the 2008 election. For someone who claims to be a Republican, who has been married three times, held extramarital affairs, and is currently estranged from his kids seems hardly as a model for leader of the U.S.  On the other hand, since we've already elected Bush twice to that post... like Alfred E. Newmann would say: "What me worry?"
It seems the only thing Guiliani has is name recognition. I do not see him creating any excitement or regular folks campaigning for him.
Why does Mike Huckabee get mentioned in all ads.  Ron Paul is on the pace 10 raise over 12 million this quarter he most of his money on hand but theres no mention I really think this is a direct attack on Dr Paul by large media because not have headlines of war death and fear would shrink there profits
Bruce - Ha, Clinton may be a waffler, but Romney is even worse! "Know where he stands"... ridiculous.
Rudy is probably the best bet for President. He managed a government bigger than any other candidate, and did it well. As far as his personal life, well, we elected Bill Clinton twice On the other hand, can you imagine Hillary as Commander in Chief?
Romney has the good looks and charisma to separate himself from the rest of the field, and his organization really knows how to work the local markets in the primary states. He attracts pro business types who look at him as being more than a politician. His campaighn slogan about "change" is ballsy and a great point of difference. He will win the first three primaries and then be on a roll. I like Obama, myself, but Romney has his act together  (and very little dirty laundry)and will pull away from the rest of the field of losers
I  believe that Huckabee would be a great candidate.  He is open about his goals and intelligent.  We know where he stands. Rudy is egotistical and Mitt is too narrow minded. I would like to see an authentic person be our next pres.
i like mitt and i like rudy, people are too studpid to get past mitt being a mormon.mitts morals are something i like , we have lost morals over the years.i really believe that if hillary gets in we are in for a wild ride going nowhere! aimed at people making money off all americans.
I'm still not sure who I prefere as our President. These are really very difficult and dangerous times. But I know I would rather have anyone but Hillary Clinton or John Edwards to lead us. We do need someone who truly will be strong against our enemies, and I really hope that the American people can see that. I am looking for the one that will truly do just that. That also goes for allowing illegals just walking across our boards. This also must stop. If they want to come here, they must do it the right way just like everyone else has to do, and has also had to do.
Truth is, it's still wide open out there on the right. I don't Rudy or Rommney have a lock on the nomination or the first two primaries for that matter. One thing I am sure of... if Obama were a Republican, he'd for sure be the next President of the United States.
I realize that the GOP is really messed up when it comes to candidates, but I don't feel there is a chance in hell that Uncle Rudith can win the nomination. If he does, then this country is a lot dumber that I thought.
