NBC News/National Journal has independently confirmed an earlier report that the National Right to Life Committee plans to endorse Thompson in the GOP presidential primary.
The NRLC is one of the most influential pro-life action groups, representing more than 3,000 chapters in all 50 states. Although Thompson would not comment directly on the endorsement, he did speak to reporters after an even in Indianola, IA this afternoon and said that a "hypothetical" endorsement from the NRLC would be "perfectly natural."
"These are people who have supported me in times past," he said. "I think it would be a perfectly natural thing to happen. I've had a 100% pro-life voting record in the United States Senate, and I think they know that. And that's the way I would govern if I was president. So it would be a perfectly natural thing and very helpful to me, I think."
The endorsement will be officially announced in a press conference at 10:00 am ET tomorrow at the National Press Club in Washington DC.
Reached for comment about the endorsement, Romney spokesman Kevin Madden said: "Governor Romney has a great deal of respect for all of those who advocate tirelessly in the name of protecting and defending the sanctity of life. He looks forward to continuing to work with his supporters and other involved in the pro-life effort now and throughout this campaign."
