Fred picks up Natl Right to Life nod

Posted: Monday, November 12, 2007 3:09 PM by Mark Murray

From NBC/NJ's Adam Aigner-Treworgy and Erin McPike
NBC News/National Journal has independently confirmed an earlier report that the National Right to Life Committee plans to endorse Thompson in the GOP presidential primary.

The NRLC is one of the most influential pro-life action groups, representing more than 3,000 chapters in all 50 states. Although Thompson would not comment directly on the endorsement, he did speak to reporters after an even in Indianola, IA this afternoon and said that a "hypothetical" endorsement from the NRLC would be "perfectly natural."

"These are people who have supported me in times past," he said. "I think it would be a perfectly natural thing to happen. I've had a 100% pro-life voting record in the United States Senate, and I think they know that. And that's the way I would govern if I was president. So it would be a perfectly natural thing and very helpful to me, I think."

The endorsement will be officially announced in a press conference at 10:00 am ET tomorrow at the National Press Club in Washington DC.

Reached for comment about the endorsement, Romney spokesman Kevin Madden said: "Governor Romney has a great deal of respect for all of those who advocate tirelessly in the name of protecting and defending the sanctity of life. He looks forward to continuing to work with his supporters and other involved in the pro-life effort now and throughout this campaign."

Do Iraqis have a right to life?
nuanced - Iraqis having the same rights as an American zygote?  Blasphemy...
What's scary is the implied thought that the President has more power than Congress... as if having a pro-life President is all that matters.

With the executive branch taking whatever it wants, and trampling all over our constitution, it gets more scary every day.
My political positions are grounded in a few principles; one of these principles is the sanctity of life.

It bewilders me that there are many Americans who oppose abortion in the name of being pro-life, but support our un-Christian-like Iraqi War.

The principle of sanctity of life requires opposition to abortion, opposition to death penalty, and opposition to pre-emptive strike wars like our Iraqi War.

There is only one Republican who holds these moral values: Ron Paul.

Do yourself a favor:  Google Ron Paul
The funny thing about the "right to life" issue is how easy the other side can go to War -- and want the Death Penalty, and veto Healthcare for Children and not want Healthcare for all and not want to save people through Stem Cell Research....well you can see where I am going with this.
no one who continues to support the war in Iraq has the right to stand up and call themselves a
"right-to-lifer" .. pro-life?! NOT!
Not to mention, do poor children, or even children of middle class Americans who can no longer afford health insurance - Do they have the right to a healthy life?  How can people endorse one person strictly because of one point of view?  The president affects many areas of American lives, not just right to life!!!  HOw narrow-minded!
What American would want those people to have a chance at freedom. I think that stoning a mouthy women has some good points. Rapeing a mans children in front of him is really not that bad. If a women was to seek an abortion in Iraq she would be killed. Why would we want Iraqi women to be educated, to hear the mullahs that is one reason the west is so hated. nuanced, shadow your view of rights are really narrow....
Another curious endorsement.  Thompson's clearly pro-states rights on the abortion issue, a pretty clever way to play both sides and still look conservative- inevitably, some states would vote yes, some would vote no.  As Huckabee said on "Face the Nation," (paraphrasing) if you believe abortion's immoral and the taking of a life in Tennessee, it's hard to argue that it's legal in another state.  Hard to figure how this group would be satisfied with such a nuanced stance from Thompson.
What a joke the National Right to Life Committee is for endorsing Fred Thompson over Mike Huckabee.  This is almost as bad as nutjob Pat Robertson endorsing Giuliani.

Thompson believes that life begins at conception (or so he says)...which would classify abortion as murder in his eyes.  Yet he wants to leave it up to states to decide?  So in his opinion, it's okay for some states to allow murder, if that's what the majority of citizens wish for?

Now, you might not agree with Huckabee's much more extreme position of wanting a constitutional ammendment to protect unborn children...but at least he's consistent.

Why the NRLC would endorse Thompson over Huckabee is utterly baffling.  Thompson isn't even close in any of the early states...his chances are far worse than Huckabee's (who is polling 2nd in Iowa).
the NRLC is endorsing Fred Thompson, the former abortion rights lobbyist?  And I thought Pat Robertson endorsing Rudy was hilarious.  This takes the cake.  I've seen it all now.

It's amazing that such principled (or so called) people/organizations could sell themselves out like this when, by far, the strongest pro-life candidate, Mike Huckabee, is there to endorse.
Dave you are so right, this is another strange endorsment, Why not Huckabee? The party that's why, they don't want him, wonder why? Is it because he would be too independent? Strange and stranger. What a year, can't wait for next year should be a rollercoaster ride. Fred is just too simple or he is playing simple, either way he is not going anywhere, perhaps they knew that and are playing around till the race tightens up.
Mitt Romney to give his JFK speech Sep. 2008 just before the elections , the same time that Jack gave his. MSM prepares bigotted hate spin.  Mitt's perfect storm on the horizon has many that are just tuning in  ready to join his leadership. Rudy scratches on 8 ball Pat Robertson .GAME OVER. Huck is no trophy buck and Fred is napping. They are no longer in the cross hairs .Mc Cain will always be a hero. Mitt and Ann Christmas shop early.Mitt also knows that Noah built a really big boat.

To cultural, religious and Republican-minded folks: Quit your whining and griping! There's a crucial race to win next year. Let's unanimously support whoever the Republican nominee is next year in order to defeat Hillary's quest for power for power's sake. This is ultimately what is at stake!!!

To progressive, Democratic folks: To respectfully disagree with you, we are not imposing our beliefs on you. We are trying to stand up for our society, which is crumbling like when the culture of the Roman Empire crumbled and was no more.

For example, the sad fact is that although we Christians have not done enough to reach out to practicing homosexuals (and others suffering from sexual abuse and childhood neglect) in order to show them the powerful love of God and a better existence, the objective reality still remains the same: if society continues to tolerate and promote this and other immoral things, our civilization will suffer the same fate as the Romans-extinction.

Furthermore, the willingness of many to promote and to attempt to "IMPOSE" this and the ABORTION HOLOCAUST on the rest of us is what is actually offensive.

We must not be earthly-minded in our approach to society and for pressing for change. We must look beyond the materialism of our age to see the spiritual worth of every human person and our ultimate fate after we leave this earth: eternal happiness with God for those who have striven to follow His Ways, or eternal separation from a loving God by those who seek the ways of the world.

Still love you and pray for you regardless of what you do!
nuaced - Of course Iraqis have rights to life and rights to the same human rights as anyone, which is why the US got rid of Saddam who was torturing and killing them by the hundreds of thousands and which is why the US is helping them fight off Iranian backed terrorists and Al Quaeda terrorists now. The US is not pretending the deaths of Iraqis aren't happening just because they look different from a lot of Americans or because they speak a different language. (The code word "It's their culture" is excuse for letting ethnic groups around the world get killed because white elites don't think they are worth helping) Because of these actions, generations to come may be free.
Mike Huckabee has always been Pro Life.  But he's run afoul of the Conservative kingmakers because he has an independent streak that makes him want to insure poor children.  He always wants to replace Free Trade with Fair Trade.  He doesn't want our enjoyment of cheap goods from overseas to be result of child labor or slave labor.

I'm dumbfounded.  You have to wonder about Robertson and NRLC NOT backing Mike Huckabee. Talk about a lack of faith! Your STAR is RISING, Mike HUCKABEE. Thank you for your vision of FAIRTAX - it's long past due to pay for government the way that American working families are - when, and because, something is sold!
You holyer than now posters are SHOW YOUR IGNORANCE WITH EVERY WORD YOU SPEAK.... Do you REALLY think our enemys give a damn about your position on abortion....They might RIGHT AFTER THEY SLIT YOUR NECK. You ingnorant idiots!!!!!!!!!!
The position of Mike Huckabee includes protecting the rights and life of those unborn, those under tyranny around the world, and all Americans including the less fortunate.  This is the bedrock of this great country and any compromise is unacceptable and will lead to our demise.
Dear "Sincere Guy",

I'm glad that you think so highly of yourself for "reaching out to practicing homosexuals (and others suffering from sexual abuse and childhood neglect) in order to show them the powerful love of God", but most of us can do without your patronizing song & dance.  Most of us "practicing homosexuals" are just regular gay guys.  (Use less clinical, condescending language & you'll be surprised how your inner attitude changes.)  We have not suffered sexual abuse or childhood neglect to any significantly greater degree than "practicing heterosexuals," as study after study has shown, though I'm sure such studies frustrate your fragile, preconceived worldview.

And many of us experience the powerful love of God every day, despite the misrepresentation He constantly gets from your ilk.  As much as it pains me that your extremist distortion of Christianity is still powerful in this country, its support is waning, as more & more religious folks focus on Christ's love rather than these semantic hang-ups.  Society is finally seeing the huge conflict that you guys stir up between religion and gayness for what it is -- a pointless strawman to try and win political skirmishes.

You don't have to be a homophobe to be a good Christian.  God doesn't want you to be, and He can change you if you pray hard enough.  I'll be praying for you.
Do our troops have the right to life?

How about the right to die for a just cause?
Since 1980, the GOP has had total control for 15 years and have done nothing to change the abortion laws in this country.

It's an election issue.

The day after the election, the GOP will go back to being gay-hating, racists, pro-choice, power freaks.
