Pressed by reporters today to differentiate himself from Obama, Edwards seemed unwilling or unable offer up substantial differences between himself and the Illinois senator -- instead relying on his now-familiar laundry list of points of contention with Hillary Clinton.
“I believe that there are real choices in this election, and I think that the more significant differences are between myself and Senator Clinton,” said Edwards today in Lebanon, N.H., after being asked why he has been focusing more on criticizing the New York senator.
But when pressed to explain what separates him from his other key opponent, Edwards seemed reluctant to press too hard. “If you look at these substantive issues, I think he also believes that there needs to be change in Washington,” he said, adding, “I think he’s much closer to where I am on Iraq and Iran.”
The former senator did go on to say that he and Obama do differ in “what’s necessary to bring about change,” but did not say what, exactly, those differences are. Edwards was also asked again whether he would support Hillary Clinton if she wins the nomination. His answer was this: “I fully expect to support the Democratic nominee, and I fully expect to be the Democratic nominee.”
He also refused to comment on today’s press release by Dodd, in which the fellow presidential hopeful said he is “surprised at just how angry John has become,” for refusing to promise to support any Democratic nominee come next year.
