Clinton won't support driver's licenses

Posted: Wednesday, November 14, 2007 4:47 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ's Athena Jones
After weeks of giving a less-than-clear answer on the topic of how she felt about giving driver's licenses to illegal immigrants, Hillary Clinton came out today in support of New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer's plan... to end his quest to do just that.

"I support Governor Spitzer's decision today to withdraw his proposal," Clinton said in a statement. "His difficult job is made that much harder by the failure of the Congress and the White House to pass comprehensive immigration reform.

"As President, I will not support drivers' licenses for undocumented people and will press for comprehensive immigration reform that deals with all of the issues around illegal immigration including border security and fixing our broken system."

For several days after the Democratic debate in Philadelphia, reporters pressed Clinton on this issue and her rivals accused her of refusing to answer what some saw as a "yes or no" question -- Should undocumented workers have licenses?

Until now, Clinton has said she understood the tough situation governor's like Spitzer were in because they had to "fill a vacuum" left by the federal government's lack of progress on immigration reform. She also said before that she "broadly" supported plans like Spitzer's but did not "pretend to know the details." And now this.

*** UPDATE *** We point you to our timeline of her statements on the issue, which we put together last week -- from her Oct. 16 meeting with the Nashua Telegraph editorial board to her performance at the debate and more.

*** UPDATE 2 *** Obama spokesman Bill Burton writes, “When it takes two weeks and six different positions to answer one question on immigration, it’s easier to understand why the Clinton campaign would rather plant their questions than answer them.”

*** UPDATE 3 *** The Dodd campaign writes, "It's flip-flopping cubed. She was for it before she was against it, before she was for it, before she was against it. It's been weeks now, and she still hasn't offered up a serious, principled answer to the question."

Are people not allowed to change their minds or solidfy their opinions over time? Give it a rest. Hilary is the most qualified candidate out there. Driver's license's for illegals. At most identification cards. Please what's next...stop harassing the lady. Chauvinistic pricks!
You guys need to stop waiting your energy on negativity towards Hillary and stand behind whoever your for.  I'm proud to be behind Hillary - you try putting up with bad press!
You mean those assorted hirsute creeps that talk Babelian and wheel you (a)round in Metropolis need "papers" for their racket?
We do have laws on the books already, they just need to be ENFORCED.
Let's face it - we need a man in the White House. If we needed a woman, there are thousands more qualified than Hillary Clinton. Wake up America.  Make your choice on someone who will make a difference. the country needs a businessman to straighten out the issues facing our country. For sure, we will see some new faces around DC in 2008, but not the Clintns.
Is it Tuck from Realityville KS, or Realityville from Tuck KS--or Billery from Patchogue?  In any event, we're gettin' the boilerplate special direct from The War Room.
Ol' quick-draw McClinton. Slouths think and move faster then she does. Hillary isn't so much a leader, she's more of a weather vane.
im olny 13 and i respect u 4 being a women

It's amazing how racist some people's remarks are. There are lost of illigal immigrants from europe, russia, china, and other countries. But yet the focus is on Mexicans! Why don't you concentrate on the REAL ISSUES: the economy, lack of good education, social security, etc.
perfect lady -perfect pres, hillary clinton-good mind/brain. obama andedwards for licnesing illegal alien-they dont know what theyre tlaking about- no brain at al; 72 percent american people against the ilegal licenzse/
wake up america- we have briany female pres. now
ur physhic lady commnets.
ano to negro obama pls. no know;ledge and no courage always tlak no substance. big mouth plus ugly- plus muslim barack hussien oabma
sadam hussine same middle name; his dad is lolo soetoro from kenya- a radical muslim.
obama (followed by clinton), each gave speeches to the racist group Laraza, promising amnesty for illegals. Obama promised amnesty within his first year as president.  Dodd wants illegals covered under his healthcare plan. All three of these guys have pretty much locked themselves into the pro-illegal positions.  Any change now would be flip-flopping.
I won't cast a vote for any of them.
There are no yes/no answers.  All issues are very complex and deserve extremely careful thought and consideration. To change ones mind on any issue once the facts are clear or new facts come to light is the responsible way to lead a country. A person who makes the best possible decision with the facts at hand and then with new facts changes that decision-- is the person I want for President---not a person who gives an answer in response to pressure or doesn't change the decision because of the possibility of being rediculed by people who don't understand the complexity of the issues.
I'm SO glad that people are seeing fit to knock Hillary out of contention. After all, in a general election, she's probably the Dems' weakest link.
This is a perfect example of what's wrong with America. We've bought the hype best used by Newt and his cronies...i.e paint the opposition as flip-floppers. Every-day people get to wait, and then change there minds on things all the time, and no one cares that much. But let a politician do it and it's a horrible flaw. The Drivers license question, was a media produced got'cha question, and everyone with half a brain knows it. No matter which way Hillary would have answered, someone would have been ticked off at her. She did the prudent thing IMHO...i.e wait and see which answer would do the least damage. If you folks out there don't understand how politics work.... it's time you get real.
Seriously, she was simply acknowledging we have an immigration issue.  She is a smart capable person who can govern this country better than the current administration and will not have the learning curve Obama will have.  Besides if this was another candidate people would not be jumping all over HIM!  Also at least she has plans, what are Obama's?  Yes he is inspirational, Yes he charismatic, but what does he stand for?  Hope is not going to solve our problems!
Is it any wonder our political system is such a mess -- just listen to some of you here.

I watched the debate, and Hillary didn't take a position FOR or AGAINST the drivers license issue. That's how some of you "anti-Hillary" vultures (with the help of the bored media) are choosing to interpret what she said. She took a 'cautious' and 'thoughtful' approach to the subject and didn't commit one way or the other.  What's wrong with that? Isn't that better than the ridgid, cowboy stubborness we have had from Bush the past 7 years (oh, wait -- I forgot..its called "decisive" right?).

So, now she took a firm stand.  Great - what's your problem? And, if she took it based on public opinion polls or input, all the better -- isn't that what we want from public servants?

I agree with the first comment -- move on to another subject that actually means something to voters. Much like the focus on Bill Clinton's personal life (while Al Quada was celebrating the bombing of the USS Cole), many of you focus on the ants on the ground, when elephants are falling out of the trees -- that's why our political system is broken (because you can't prioritize what's really important and instead fall prey to the 'anti-Clinton' campaigns of those who prefer you not focus on JOBS, the ECONOMY, DEFICIT, HEALTH CARE, ETC...
Since Hillary will probably be elected,  I'm concerned about our future.  Is she the best tht this country has to offer?
I think it's clear that, from the start (Nashua, NH), HRC had misgivings about issuing licenses, but didn't have to give a yes-no answer because she is a federal employee running for federal office and issuing licenses is a state matter.  Immigration policy is a federal matter, and that's the issue because the federal government has failed to develop any policy or program in the matter (which is what she said).  So maybe we can put the driver's license aside now, in the presidentials, and address the real question?
She said from the beginning she didn't like the idea but thought it was the best option he had to deal with a problem that he shouldn't have to deal with.  I don't see the flip flop.  I see someone trying to find sensible solution to a complicated problem.  If you want black and white, yes and no answers, stick with Bush, on Iraq, on stem cells, it's all black and white with these people, is that what we've been programmed to expect now?  Anyone who can see both sides of an issue is a flipflopper?  Sad.
This is what I don't understand.  Everyone calls her the most divisive dem candidate, Obama especially is running on a platform of bring people together to solve problems.  Hillary actually comes out with proposals and plans to do that, and she's ridiculed as 'triangulation and poll driven.'  So it's o.k to say you'll be flexible and responsive and listen and work with the other side, but if you actually try to do that, you're labelled a flipflopper, Bush-lite, panderer??????  From the proposals she's made she sounds like the least divisive candidate out there.
hey tuck , why dont you go look them up like the rest of the media in chicago already have . Its public record . Are you realy this dumb . you must have miss the memo ,your hater friends have all ready gave this one up. get real
Clinton may have been imprecise in her answer to one question, but has not been inconsistent. At the time the question was asked she did not seem to have a full, well-reasoned position on the driver's license issue (a state matter), as she does on a full range of federal issues (domestic, defense, and foreign policy) likely to come before the next president.

As part of comprehensive immigration reform, do you want driver's licensing to become a federal issue, where you go to the IRS office or the Social Security Administration office instead of the state DOT office?

In all of the ad nauseum blog criticism of Clinton's answer, I have read no practical solution to the illegal immigration problem. No Democratic presidential candidate and no Republican presidential candidates has proposed a clear solution either. Why? Because no solution is possible without acknowledging that U.S. business has a vested interest in maintaining the status quo and (like it or not) we do as well. We must address that contradiction before moving forward.

Voters who believe that illegal immigration is among today's essential core issues are becoming the new "single issue" robots of the 21st Century, much like the "right-to-life" robots of the 20th.
Shes really crazy. I guess she thinks the rest of us mear mortals are just stupid...sad thing is..shes right.  People will vote for her. People will continue to believe everything that she says.
For all the clintonista in this blog. I know that you've been trying hard to explain the inexplicable. October 31, 2007 the day after the philly debate, Senator Clinton's campaign send a press release in support of Governor spitzer idea to give an DL to illegal immigrants. It was reported by Adam Nagourney in the NY Times. So in less than two weeks, Senator Clinton offers four positions on a simple question.
In the debate she says that it makes sense but when she was called out by Senator dodd, she says that she never said that she was supporting the idea. Then on October 31, 2007 she sends a press release to announce her support of Spitzer's idea. Finally, yesterday after checking the polls and the withdrawal of the plan by Governor Spitzer, she announced that she is against the idea.
Here is the link of the report of Adam Nagourney of the NY Times.

I'm an independent, but after the bush years i was saying to myself that there is no way I'll vote the GOP in 2008. Now, i know for sure that if the only candidate the democratic party can come out with is Hillary, then I'll go back to the GOP.
I've found a new respect for the courage of Senator Mc Cain and Senator Obama. These two candidates are real leaders, they have some backbone to stand for what they believe in. You may not agree with them, they'll listen but they'll always tell you what is needed to be heard and not you want to hear. Our country in these difficult times desperately needs this kind of leadership.
It is so sad to see the lack of knowledge on these boards. DL issue is a State issue not a federal issue. States make decision on these issues they tried to make it a federal issue by the real id act and several states stated they would not go along with it.  Educate yourself folks it is very important! Unfortunately, that is the reason why we are so divided in this country because we debate but we are not versed in the issues of the debate. Read and not listen to everything you hear from the pundits. Go Hillary!!!!!!
Hillary is a world class waffler!!
