Janet Huckabee speaks out

Posted: Thursday, November 15, 2007 10:11 AM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC's Lauren Appelbaum
Janet Huckabee, wife of presidential candidate Mike Huckabee, stumped for her husband in South Carolina yesterday. She described to a group of supporters how she plays a support role for her husband and said policy questions were "off-limits."

"If it's a policy question or something you want to know that Mike stands on, you're probably going to have to ask him," she said at a First Ladies Tea in the South Carolina Governors' Mansion. "Because that's just not where I am. That's not what I'm doing. I'm asking to be your First Lady of the country."

In an interview after the event, Huckabee further explained her position on being First Lady. "I leave the policy up to my husband,” she said. “Not that I'm afraid of it, but I wasn't elected to do that. I think he is very capable of leading this country and I think he would be the one that would be the policy maker in our family."

Running for President is a family affair for the Huckabees. Janet Huckabee has taken a leave of absence from her job and her four children (including an in-law) are all working on the campaign. Their eldest son spearheads the blogging for the campaign while their middle child runs the TeamHuckabee Web site. Their daughter-in-law, who is a lawyer, is on the legal team while their daughter is living in Iowa through the caucus.

"I cannot imagine taking something this huge and a task this large without your family's support," she said, possibly offering a dig toward Giuliani. "I just can't imagine coming home to non-supportive family members."

When Janet Huckabee opened the floor for questions, the first questioner asked about new polling that shows Huckabee narrowly trailing Romney in Iowa for second place.

"In Iowa?!?" Huckabee said to laughter. "Thank you for asking. They're going to think that question was planted. We don't do any planted questions."

She offered more during the interview, telling the reporter her husband doesn't have to win the state. "Just placing in at least one of the top three positions is very good," she said. "My gut feeling is we're going to do better than that. And I would not be surprised at all if we won Iowa. The people there are committed; they'll walk through snow to vote. That's the ones you want, not the ones that are fair-weather friends but the ones who are truly, truly committed to do whatever it takes to get people to the polls to vote."

Janet Huckabee also admitted she is "very disappointed" in the National Right to Life's decision to endorse Thompson over her husband. "Mike has been a true Right to Life person,” she said. “He's marched in the Right to Life parades for 13 years. He's just been a big supporter pro-life legislation, and it was disappointing to him."

"God's a big God," Huckabee continued. "If he wants us to continue to go and to fight the giants, we'll do that. You remember Jesus feeding the 5,000 with two fishes and five loaves. So, we're multiplying our money. Every dollar spends like a thousand and every prayer we get is like a million bucks."

She said she would devote part of her time as First Lady to working on better personal preparedness for natural emergencies and for more affordable housing. She let her supporters know a little more about her -- letting them know about her interest in the military. As First Lady of Arkansas, she fired a grenade launcher (hitting the target two out of three times) and jumped out of an airplane.

"It helps to understand a little bit about what they do if I can experience that," she said. "And I appreciate it far more."

Mike Huckabee is often asked if he would accept the job of vice president, and his wife faced the same question. "We're not looking there," she said. "That's a long way down the road. ... I like to think we have a stealth operation. We're out there. We're underground. We're grassroots and the people are coming out and supporting our message.

Mrs. Huckabee sounds like quite the balanced woman--nailing a target with a grenade launcher and referring to Jesus are not mutually exclusive. The Prince of Peace himself said that he came "not to send peace, but a sword" (Matthew 10:34).

I also appreciate that she doesn't see herself as directly influencing policy, but plans to play a public role in affecting the common good in America. A good mix of traditional thinking and forward thinking. And I'm sure she'd be better at First Ladying than Bill Clinton.
Hillary didn't criticize those who dissented from her husband?  Are you serious?!!?

Did you forget about hw anyone who dissented was lumped into the "Vast Right-wing Conspiracy" group.  Anytime something was said in dissent, it was this "conspiracy" group who was at fault.  Well, if that's the case, then I am a charter member!

In the case of Janet Huckabee, I say good for her!  I also would have loved to have been at that tea.  If we could vote for president based on the wives, I would be totally behind Mike Huckabee.  But I can't support him for President.  I do, however, believe that if he is picked as a VP candidate, that ticket will be totally unbeatable!
Treena, maybe you should read my posts and not get them confused with some of the others. I was simply commenting on the fact that comments to this blog cannot "attack the comments of others" yet comments that attack our commander in chief, vp and his wife are ok. I just don't understand that.
Read the Old Testament and find out how God handled the enemies of His people. He commanded His army to completely destroy everything, now I am not advocating that we do that, but God is not a pacifist. We are in a war to protect you and I so that you can get in an airplane, or cab, or go to a show, without the fear of being killed. Because whether you like it or not, these "Islamo-facists" that we are fighting hate you and me equally. Their not going to take role and only kill Bush supporters before they attack again. They do not care that you are sympathetic to them or not. So before we go attacking each other's positions or theology, we may want to look and see who the real enemy is.
I am a good Catholic, I attend mass weekly but don't believe in God (I don't disbelieve, but I can never believe as that would be intellectually dishonest).  I struggle with finding consistency with Christianity, it can be used to justify any behavior moral or immoral, and quite frankly I personally trust knowledge over faith.  Anyway, more than anybody else on this blog, I worship science.  My top policy issues that I focus on are stem cell research, education and science funding, and ending the stupid Iraq war.  I would abhor teaching creationism in schools as much as Churches would abhor having evolution taught within their hallowed halls.  Still, I like Mike for his demeanor and ability to compromise and get things done.  Nobody, besides me, is perfect, but overall he's pretty good.

Josh C., Hicktown, MS—Neither you nor G.T. seems to have any clue about science, the principles or the results.  I cannot take the time to correct every mistake in the anti-science statements, but I am resigned to the fact that it’s not worth doing so.  P.S. is Hicktown an actual town in MS?  Because that would be hilarious given my preconceptions about the state.  And where has science proven the existence of God, I missed that in Science/Theology school.

As for censorship, FirstRead does very little, leaving some people to look like complete fools--a category I am far-too-often in.  I'm sure that I could write 'own with Allah' or that 'homosexuality is gay' if I truly felt inclined--how's that for equal opportunity.  They are consistent if anything.
oh my goodness, some of your responses are so well said and others here are just flat out mean. Huckabee's wife sounds great. Huckabee sounds great to me.

People have to realize that the passionate people in the US vote on a couple issues. I am a teacher, and I swear they all vote for people based on what they will or have done for ed. I know Christians who vote purely on the right to life. I know non christians who vote purely for a right to choose. And of course the war brings about all sorts of feelings. I know corporate people who vote against taxes.

The problem that lies in our system that cracks me up is that we have republicans who generally want less government but not when it relates to moral issues. And then we have democrats who want more social help (government help/control) but want less government control over social issues. Hmmm. All that equals problems for everyone when voting.

I read people saying they want to comparmentalize their beliefs, they say they are Christian but would not allow it to affect their political decisions. WHAT?? We vote for the person, the whole person, their views, their platform and them the person. If they are a believing Christian, then they can pray and attend church and use God in their statements because that is who they are. I would not expect a non believer to all of a sudden start talking like a believer to placate the part of the US he doesn't represent, that makes no sense.

Sidenote - talk show hosts, hysterical, they all swear they are right, all right, and the other side is evil and crazy. That is hilarious. Both sides are right and wrong. For sure. Media, crazy and slanted against whatever you believe, of course.

People we need to read and read analytically and you need to go with your heart, who can lead this nation the best? I vote for Huckabee, if you don't think so good for you. No noed to go crazy or insult his family. It happens on both sides. keep it above the belt people!
JJ in NJ:

Gov. Huckabee did NOT grant clemency to Dumond (sp?).  It was the Democrat-appointed parole board that granted him parole after a Democrat governor (Jim Guy Tucker) reduced his sentence.

Please be honest and fair and don't make false accusations without doing some research.

The sad fact is that a vote for Huckabee in IA is a vote for Giuliani in the end.  He will not be able to gain enough in the major electoral states to make up for his few wins in the South.  Most of the electoral points are in places that he has no name recognition and no money to get any.  But I guess it is all part of trying to make way for the giuliani/huckabee ticket.  Which would cause me to lose a lot of the little bit of respect that I had gained for Huckabee.  I believe I will stick to Romney the only person who has actually created jobs in real life.
Juan in FL:

"Separation of church and state" is not in the constitution, as you have stated.  Due to a liberal Supreme Court judge in the 1960's, people have come to think it is really in the constitution.  It has only been implied, and not through the Founding Fathers, but through liberal "free" thinkers.

To to be true to the constitution, you have to admit that the part that is NOT being followed is religion being able to be practiced freely.  The "in" think among liberals is to bash any Christian that's ini the public eye.  There are Christians in the classroom who are terrified to even mention God in the Pledge of Allegiance for fear of an ACLU lawsuit that represents one child out of hundreds in that school.  That is not "freedom of expression", is it?

A Young, Monument, CO--How're those theocracies working out in the MidEast?  I can't understand how you would want to be like them, only with a different religion.
Fascist for Christ,
"Decay to C-12 - not "leakage," but it's not real anyway. Ask Michelle and Josh - the Bible is the only science book we need."

Ha! I was wondering if anyone would catch my faux pas. :-)Yes, you are right. It is a process of decay, my apologies again. The basic concept, though, is how quickly the C-14 molecules disappear, and measurement indicates the age of the tested substance. I just thought I'd mention the top 0.0314% reasons to question the absolute authority and validity of the Theory of Evolution. Why do you say "it's not real"? What's not real?
People equate "truth" with "science". Truth is "the correspondence of a statement to reality" and Science is man's conclusions of observing reality. Neither calls for a text or book of any sort. If one wanted to learn about air resistance we could drop a book and sheet of paper like Newton did. That's how we learn science: we observe reality. Not to major in the minors here, but the next step is noting what we observe and forming hypothesis' about why it happened. Then we go on to test the hypothesis until it qualifies as a theory, etc.
So, what do we see around us? We don't see spores spontaneously erupting into full fledged living organisms. We do see fossils being formed in a matter of weeks, months, or years. We don't see monkeys turning into humans, or platypuses producing anything other than more platypuses.
We don't see something come from a literal nothing. It's never been observed.
This is what evolution is based on. Even if a scientist puts together some chemicals and successfully creates the compound essential to life,  that doesn't come close to the equivalent of a living organism. And where did the chemicals come from in the first place?
No book is absolutely necessary to learn science. It's nice to be able to build on another's work, so we do write our notes and pass them on to the next generation out of consideration. But plenty of times the next generations have disproved the former hypothesis', theories, and even scientific laws. We can expect at least some of today's science to be disproved one day, based on history. Science ultimately can't "prove" anything. We must realize this: it's flawed because observations and tests are flawed, thus making fallible theories.
Any scientist should be able to swallow his pride and admit when reality doesn't correspond to his theory.

Let's open our minds and eyes and observe, shall we?
p.s. I might note I am a female and *am* thinking for myself. :-)
nsmsnbc, Hicktown is not a real city, but a hilarious attempt at comedy, since everyone in america looks down their noses at us common folk, who go around barefooted and pregnant all year round (notice the sarcasm dripping off your computer screen) Like i said God is in a science book if you look real close, their not going to mention his name because then that would prove them wrong but He is in there. Molecules, DNA, all the little things that make the BIG things, God did it, remember, "foolishness will shame the wise." Don't believe everything you read or learn in science class, psst, it's not all true. Ask Darwin he'll even tell you that he was wrong, but no one wants to talk about that. But then again this is all coming from a white, honky, idiot mississippi boy, so what do i know. They just changed our city name to ...
Why am I wasting my time in all of this non-sense? Go Huckabee, all the way to the White House!!
Nicholas -

A theocracy is not what I'm advocating.  I don't believe the constitution supports a theocracy, either.  After all, the Puritans left England because England was a theocracy at that point, as well as a monarchy.

However, it's a long way between your assumed theocracy (your assumption after reading my comments) and silencing the majority of people in this country who believe in God, our Creator (what the ACLU wants).

I'm not assuming you are promoting a God-free society, so please don't assume I'm promoting a theocracy.  I'm 45 years old, have 2 grown children, with my youngest being in 11th grade.  I have homeschooled all three of them and have done extensive reading in historical perspectives.  A theocracy is NOT the answer, I am certain of that!

Our Founding Fathers didn't want the U.S. to promote or ordain one religion like England did, but they didn't want religion stifled either.  It's called a happy-medium; something this country practices, but doesn't seem to grasp when confronted with a differing political viewpoint.  Maybe you and I can be one of the first to agree on a happy medium?

The U.S. has swung to the stifling end of the spectrum; don't you agree?  When does the ACLU ever pay the legal costs for a Christian defending their faith? Why should a Christian be legally afraid to say their Creator's name?

This country has gone too politically correct; however, it's now become politially correct to castigate Christians.  Better not say anything about a minority in this country or you'll lose your job, be made a scapegoat, and lose any respect you might have gained through much hard work (besides, being rude to minorities is just plain wrong, I believe).

But . . . make fun of a Christian - that's certainly the sport of the day for non-Christians - and that's a shame.  (sorry for the run-on sentences).

I like Janet Huckabee.  She's not too aggressive, and she seems to understand that it will be her husband, and not she, who establishes the policies.  The Dems are content to buy into their graspy, covetous former First Lady whose hunger for power for its own sake and the sake of the adoration she - and many an insecure liberal - clamours for). Mewishes that liberals would "grow up," start accepting themselves as they are. Maybe the Republic could be spared the debilitation of travelling down the socialist, destructive road.  First step? Getting the "power mongers'" hands out of our paychecks and business income.  Passing the FairTax.  Let's roll, with Huckabee! http://snipurl.com/scrapthecode
I don't see how a Christian could vote for anyone but Mike Huckabee in this Primary. I am so happy to see his wife has a Biblical view of her role in the marriage. What a far cry from the wicked and vile Hillary.
The Huckabees are genuine. It's refreshing to see a person like Mike Huckabee running for office-- he gives a jaded 20-something conservative hope again!
We've found another Reagan!  Huckabee has Reagan's charm and communication skills and is even more brilliant.  Previously, I was hoping for Gingrich, but Mike has Newt's intelligence without being offending people.  He has the integrity and ability to be an effective president of all the people.  I am proudly displaying a Huckabee bumper sticker and supporting him financially.  GO MIKE!!!
What could be better in times like this than to have a man of God like Mike Huckabee at the helm of the U.S.?
 Lloyd Johnson, Modesto, CA
Perhaps during this Christmas season it's time to explain "Peace on Earth"  This isn't a pacifist statement...  It says "Good will toward men"  (from God).  It's peace from God to all men, which Jesus came to give us.
Give me John McCain -- and Cindy McCain any day.  Huckabee strikes me as a glad-hander.  McCain is a statesman.  Cindy is just plain CLASS.  Read about John McCain -- not what you've heard.  Read his position on issues.  You will find you understand and agree on everything -- just about everything -- or can deal with his stands.  I'd LOVE to see a McCain/Lieberman ticket!!!
Juan from ft.Lauderdale is just like the rest of the left...  talk about tolerance, peace and love, while killing babies (which IS murder) and screaming hatred. The left are all just a bunch of posers with more hatred than intelligence. Take a lefty, and spin him around twice, you get a radical ready to strap on a bomb. The left are all one spin from communist, and two spins from terrorist.
Jumping out of a plane!  What courage!  I could not do this!

Mrs. Huck is being ridiculed on Huffpo for not being glamorous.  She should wear those gold outfits more, which are more suited to her complexion than the red ones, especially the dark red.  But the fact that she doesn't have an expert doing her colors means she's an authentic person.  Authentic feels good.  I am grateful to have the Huckabees around whether or not they win.
