Anti-Romney NH, IA push polls

Posted: Friday, November 16, 2007 3:46 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ's Erin McPike
Since some of Romney’s advisers are against him giving a speech on his faith, his adversaries are ready to give it for him.

AP reported this morning that calls are circulating in New Hampshire regarding Romney’s faith, and NBC’s John Boxley reports that Romney responded to the news by calling those attacks “un-American.” He also raised some eyebrows with his charge that the McCain-Feingold legislation opened the door to such attacks by allowing the identities of those behind the push polling to stay hidden. And Boxley reports that the candidate found it ironic that McCain is now the one to be calling for an investigation.

Romney spokesman Matt Rhoades issued the following statement: "Whichever campaign is engaging in this type of awful religious bigotry as a line of political attack, it is repulsive and, to put it bluntly, un-American. There is no excuse for these attacks. Governor Romney is campaigning as an optimist who wants to lead the nation. These attacks are just the opposite. They are ugly and divisive."

New Hampshire Sen. Judd Gregg, a representative for the campaign, called for an expedited investigation this afternoon, and stated: “New Hampshire voters are sophisticated enough to see through these types of negative campaign tactics and strongly resent this type of campaign in our state. I know [NH] Attorney General Kelly Ayotte will see through this case with the seriousness it deserves in a thorough and timely fashion.”

Fred Thompson’s campaign has also jumped at denouncing the attacks, calling it “robo-dial bigotry,” which serves only “to prop up Democrats tomorrow.”

Politico's Jonathan Martin reports on anti-Romney push-polling in Iowa as well. One Iowa community college teacher contacted Martin, "saying he received a call with information about McCain's military service and anti-spending record. Then there were 'lots of negatives on Romney,' said the recepient of the call in an e-mail, including mentions of his 'flip-flops,' hiring illegal immigrants as landscapers and extensive discussion of Mormonism.

" 'Statements were on baptizing the dead, the Book of Mormon being on the level of the Bible, and one about equating it to a cult,' said the Iowan, deeming them 'common criticisms of Mormonism.''I think they asked twice if being a Mormon would be an issue.'"

The American Association of Public Opinion Research put out a statemtent called "When advocacy calls are made under the guise of research," denouncing and explaining the practice.

*** UPDATE *** The Giuliani campaign's Communications Director, Katie Levinson, said in a statement: “There is no room for this sort of thing in politics. Our campaign does not support or engage in these types of tactics and it is our hope other campaigns will adhere to the same policy.”

*** UPDATE 2 *** A Romney senior strategist in an early primary state said this afternoon that although the campaign wants voters to realize that Romney is a man of faith, that isn't a message they are pushing for fear of implied contrast. Put another way: If they push Romney as a devout, family man, they're worried that there will be pushback from other campaigns who will complain that the Romney camp is attacking other candidates personally.

*** UPDATE 3 *** The Thompson camp has been calling these robo-calls, but that is incorrect. There are no robots involved. These are live people who are calling.

Push-polls are the republican thing to do----are they coming from Texas?Bush did it so it must be ok
The GOP have been promoting these type of tactics for years...why complain now when they turn it against each other.
GO ROMNEY!!!
This has George Soros/Clinton Inc. fingerprints all over it because they think they can beat Rudy but know they can't beat Romney.
Run Mitt Run!  (Romney/Huckabee 08)  That's a winning ticket!
I know this is serious stuff, but I have to thank the repubs for the comedic relief from all the real issues facing the U.S. and the world, with all the righteous idignation shown by all these fools! This is hilarious!
It's free speech. It is a dirty tactic but that's politics. Nothing was said that isn't true. If Romney doesn't like what was said he had the opportunity to make different life decisions a long time ago.
Bet the Romney campaign is behind these calls themselves, garners sympathy, a classic Karl Rove technique.  So it looks like Rove had decided he wants Romney as the nominee.

Hope McCain can investigate and find the source:  the Romney campaign of course.
Hmm, a company in Orem Utah is making anti-Mormon phone calls?   Something doesn't seem right.
you got it mr!

I wonder why what I write, sharing 'information' to help voters make 'educated votes,' doesn't get shared here.
If Mitt wins the nomination, I think he and his religion will face a lot more of this.  The Mormon Church has been shrouded in secrecy for many years.  People want to know for whom they vote and what a person believes does color their decision making abilities.  Fair Game.
Some of the most adamant anti-mormon rhetoric comes from Utah. And Gov. Huckabee was the lead speaker at the Southern Baptist convention's anti mormon meeting back in 1998 in Salt Lake City. As fine a man he may be, he is not only a liberal and disengenuous, but a bigot as well.
So if it's OK for anti-Mormon comments and calls, which I see as discriminatory, then why wouldn't it be OK for anyone who wanted to be so ignorant as to mention skin color or gender?  And, why haven't commentators asked ALL of the candidates what their religion is, how many times a year they go to church, what are their specific religous beliefs, etc.?  Very discriminatory... I thought America was founded for religous freedom - so why should it be such a big deal about Romney.  Was not JFK the first catholic president?
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, (The Mormons) is not shruded in secrecy!   Good Grief, everyone, EVERYONE is invited to come and join our Sunday services and learn all about us.  Where's the secret?
I wonder what the main stream media would do if they attacked Jew or African American like they have attacked Mitt Romney??  It is interesting that his rivals seem to ignore his record!!  Mitt Romney would lead this country back to prosperity!!

Please go to a church service for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, and you will see it is not what the media has portrayed....By there fruit ye shall know them.
Disgraceful way of playing politics.  So far I haven't received any Republican push-polls, but I've had five for the left-wing in the past few months.  Each time I politely tell the person calling exactly why he/she's an idiot, and then hang up.
While I'm an atheist, I was raised in a Mormon family.  It's just one branch of Christianity, the people no different than one of dozens of branches/religions.  Being Mormon makes a person just as qualified to be President as a Christian, as is a Jew or atheist or any religion.  The religion doesn't dictate morals or actions, it is merely one reason among many for a person to make the choices they make, and for many of us isn't a reason at all.  What's important is those morals and actions, not the reasoning behind the person's choice to hold to them.  Ignoring actions in favor of listening to well-written rhetoric is how Clinton became President, and now ignoring actions in favor of buying into personal spin unrelated to the necessities of the presidency will decide this one.
As a gay former Mormon, I can say whole heartedly that Mitt Romney is far and away the best candidate out there. All this crap against Mormons is just that. Crap.  If the worst thing you can say about Mitt is that some guy said something offensive 150 years ago, then I would say you are doing pretty good. After all, I can point to just a few years ago where Huckabee wanted to round up AIDS patients and ship them to an island somewhere.
My evangelical aunt said to me "Since Romney wants to be president, it's REALLY important to know just exactly what he believes", justifying her churches Mormon Nights. Does no one understand that learning about a subject is different than learning why its wrong?  ANY perspective, true or false, can have a persuasive arguement against it. I'm disapointed that so many americans, of every faith and creed, are fooled so easily by propoganda.
The lady quoted in the Iowa voting said that she had looked into the reason Huckabee made his decision on his immigration statement.  Why don't people look into the Mormon beliefs and standards before deciding that we're a cult or bad in general.  Some things in life are too sacred to share with the public.  This is the difference: sacred as opposed to secret. The public is welcome to learn all about Mormonism from the people who know it best...Mormons!  Why listen to outsiders who really don't get it.  Truth is what matters most to us Mormons.  Find out the truth about our religion, we have nothing to do but share the love of our Heavenly Father and his beloved Son, Jesus Christ, with you. God will testify this to you. You're welcome!
