Clinton and the trust issue

From Domenico Montanaro and Lauren Appelbaum
Clinton
went up with a new health care ad in Iowa and New Hampshire over the weekend, featuring a man who says he asked for Clinton's help when his insurance company would not cover a bone marrow transplant for his son. She came through, he says, and adds, "Now her opponents are saying that Hillary can't be trusted? I trusted this woman to save my son's life. And she did."

Interesting that the campaign would choose, in a 30-second ad, to bring up Clinton's trustworthiness. In our most recent NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll, Clinton received some of her worst scores on the question of whether she is "honest and straightforward." Among all voters, only 34% gave her good scores on the topic; 39% rated her poorly. Among Democrats, 49% gave her good scores, compared to 20% who did not.

But compare those numbers to her leading rivals. Among all voters, 51% said Obama's "honest and straightfoward," 17% did not. Among Democrats, his numbers spike: 75% gave him good scores versus just 10% who did not.

*** UPDATE *** This, in fact, is not the first time Ward has appeared in an ad for Clinton. He was one of four men who appeared in a 2006 ad during her Senate run called “Standing Up for New York.”

Per New York Times: “Clips of four men praising the senator for bringing money, jobs and services to constituents. ...Joseph Ward, a father in Lisbon, N.Y., says that when his son needed a bone marrow transplant, Mrs. Clinton’s office assured him that the hospital would help absorb the cost.

"SCORECARD: This is Mrs. Clinton’s first ad in her 2006 Senate race, and it is characteristically on message, focusing on her work for New York without any allusion to a possible presidential bid. But the subtext -- that she can win over skeptics -- is one that could be applied in a presidential race. And there is no mention of the Iraq war, which Mrs. Clinton voted to authorize, a subject that has become increasingly problematic for candidates across the board."

Hat tip to reader “modernwoman, Anytown,USA” for remembering that Ward was in an earlier ad. And to Ben Smith at The Politico for the video.

Here’s the transcript: "Joe Ward"
Joseph Ward [piano music in background]: Let me tell you a little story. My son Joel had a terrible illness. He needed a bone marrow transplant. But our insurance wouldn't cover, and we couldn't afford. We called Senator Clinton and asked for help. Her office called the next day letting us know the hospital was going to absorb the cost of the transplant. Now her opponents are saying that Hillary can't be trusted? I trusted this woman to save my son's life. And she did.

CLINTON: I'm Hillary Clinton and I approve this message.

Plain and simple.  I trust Hillary.  I don't trust any media person who writes about her.  There's a gigantic Swift Boat attempt going on to derail her.  All kinds of lies are being told with no backing by several people in the media.  This has gone on for decades showing Hillary to be something she is not.
There's a lot of folk out there I feel confident I could sell the Golden Gate Bridge to.  You have to do research ourside the MSM to really know who Hillary is.  The media has protrayed her as someone she is not too much of the time.  The biggest scare about her to the GOP is not that she is all that liberal, but that she has the where with all to actually give power back to the people of this country and will stop the pocket lining of selective wealthy types and they are going to go all out to stop that, including to the point of tarnishing her reputation.  That's been going on for nearly two decades.  Don't let them win.  Vote Hillary !!
Hillary Clinton is the best candidate for president, D or R. Stop arguing about and just vore for her.
Why are Democrats and Republicans doing this? They are both nominating candidates that I can't fathom ever voting for. If it comes down to Hillary vs. Rudy, I'm just going to stay home. Both parties are sacrificing their core values to nominate someone who can win an election. All I hear from Rudy backers is that "Rudy can beat Hillary", and all I hear from Hillary backers is that "she is better than Bush". These two are setting the bar dangerously low.

Please don't let this election be yet another choice between the lesser of two evils. Please nominate someone worthwhile.
Don't trust this:

'...I fully trust Hillary as my president.
Sierra, SF...'

You can trust 'Slick Hillie' or 'Slick Willie' as must as you can trust THAT POST !!

Count me among the OVER 20% of Democrats that DON'T trust 'SLick Hillie' !

Why is she doing 'opposition research' against Obama ?
Why is she disclosing it ?

Is that a page out of the Republican playbook ?
Mark Penn at work !!
Think they'll impress Iowa voters ?

Hillary Clinton, 15 years of dishonesty, scandals and divisiveness

How true it is !!
Ron, I will also be voting for Hilary!
I cannot see what and why people believe the Clinton's have any good for this country. She doesn't know how to answer a question that's asked and if she does....Bill comes to her rescue. if she can't handle this phase how will she handle people like Iran's President and Russia's president. I don't trust her. JC in Florida
Gentlemen and women, here we go again; that congenital, intractable right-wing conspiracy to destroy Bill Clinton’s presidency until DNA spoke loud and clear.  What if there were no seamen on Monica Lewinsky’s dress, the latter would have been severely pummeled to a pulp.  The saving grace for Lewinsky came the moment the hair follicle was taken from Bill Clintonn as sample for DNA tests and the game was up.  The game changed from “l never had sexual relationship with that woman, Lewinsky” to “l did not have appropriate relationship with Lewinsky and l am sorry”.

If you notices, Hilary Clinton’s campaign are not challenging Bob Novak to reveal his source and let the Democrat operative reveal the person in her campaign that was spreading such rumors.  Instead, they say it is Republican dirty politics taken from Karl Rove playbook.  It is always Right Wing Republican Conspiracy as mantra for deflecting genuine charges against unethical behaviors.
I am voting for hillary!
Ron, TX (Sent Monday, November 19, 2007 1:02 PM)

How cute, so not only are Hillary's Decepto-cons grasping for straws, they're down right disgusting and faking posts by people who are anything BUT in favor of Hillary Clinton getting the nomination.

You all are in good company.  Hillary Clinton does the same dirty tricks.

We need a government we can trust, change we can believe in!
BARACK OBAMA '08
I knew the guy that appeared in the Ad was phony. How can we trust her when her deeds are dishonest?
I listened to the gentlman's story about his son, I'm thankful things worked out for him. But if the truth be known, his insurance wouldn't pay because of the mess that Hillary Clinton caused with health care when her husband was President. His insurance probaly would had pay for the transplant before Hillary forced the "little man" to offer insurance to all the employees. That opened the door for the Insurance company's to raise their premiums, the deductibles and refusal to pay the higher costing medical treatments such as transplants, etc.because they know we have to have the insurance!! Do you really want her to continue to help the insurance companys control everything. Sure she stepped in and helped this child, it's election time. IF she wasn't running for President, how long do you think it would have taken her to response? Hillary and all of the other government officals do not care about the American people, they have everything they need set up to take care of them the rest of their life. So why should they be concerned about the people who have to work more than one job,or the children left at home or someone else (that you pray you can trust) to take care of them while both parents have to work to keep a roof over their heads and food on the table. What do they care that people who need disablity can get it but those who truly do not need it has no problem getting it. They only care about their image in public's eye, not the people who are seeing them. They are willing to help people in other country's but not the children and the adults in America who have the same needs. Hillary needs to stay where she is and stay out of Health Care or it could be that no one will be able to afford insurance.Doctors have already stopped seeing self pay patients in some area's. So where do these people go? They can't get any government help because they made a little bit to much the previous year or they don't have enough children in their house hold to quailfy. What do you do with those people who are basically "stuck between a rock and a hard spot"? Some things should not be based on the previous year's income. People don't plan to get ill,but when their health issues do change, they should be able to get the help they need. That's why we are taxed to death and have paided into Medicare.
It's sad when you pay co-pays that add's up to more than, or just as much as your insurance premiums every month. The elderly who are on several medications have to make a choice of getting their medications or eating each month. Our elderly should be taken care better than what they are!!!
I dont think there is a real good canadate running, most of those running are depending of the independents to carry them thru....This is the time for the independents to unite and find a canadate who will represent all of the people...I think money is determing canadates and hate to say it also the media is not giving equal time to those who arent as well known and dont have the money that the so call front runners do......wake up americans and get your country back....
Right on Bee.  I speak as a Republican and right now I think Obama is the one that can unite this country!! If HRC gets into office, we can only look forward to four years of lying, let alone dirty tactics that this woman will definitely do.  Let's keep any Clinton/Bush (Jeb?) from ever attaining the White House again....
Bee needs to find another hobby - rather than just bashing senator clinton - perhaps she can explain a positive vision that her candidate has for the future - not just bashing another candidate...

But something tells me BEE just likes to attack and not actually communicate...
That Hillary has high negatives should be a badge of honor. Those are the scars from years of going against the tide of Republican sli*me.
Warning!!!!!!!!!!

In Hillary Clinton what you see is George W. Bush in female clothing… Her campaign is now appearing to be corrupt and sleazy…. Look at all the strange tactics that are now going on since things have gotten tight in Iowa… Look at all the strange things that are now going when they are forced to answer important questions…. They seem to always find a way to get off the subject, whether it’s planting a rudely crowd at the CNN shamed of the debate… Did her camp ask the planted rudely crowd to boo every time Obama or Edwards spoke…? In essence, preventing them from explaining to America what they would do to make this country better …. And lets talk about these all of a sudden push poll phones calls that are now taken place with other candidates… The planted stories in the paper… Anything humanly possible to change the subject so that they won’t have to answer important questions about the troubles of Americans…  Look America we have seen these sleazy tactics before… All you have to do is go back and look at each Bush Campaign for President… Everything tactics Clinton Campaign is doing, they have apparently learned from Bush… Ask your self this, has Bush ever truly answered and explained any question… Now ask yourself this, has Hillary Clinton…. If you haven’t before start to pay attention now…What clear and decisive answers has she provided...? “Fiasco responsibility” what does that mean?  Be careful not to get caught up in the Hype or we will end-up with 4 more years of George W. Bush….

Note: To the other Candidates... Stay on Topic...don’t allow the Clinton Camp to make you lose your focus... Right now they are desperate and will try anything…..

Remember America needs you…. American needs Change!!!!!!

"What a statement! Everybody has or knows scandalous information on Hillary. She and Bill are worthless--I am sure that is in the bible somewhere and Nostradamus must have a chapter or two devoted to them and their shenanigans. Both their pictures can be found in the dictionary next to "Liar"."
Julie:  Great input.  Most people are trusted on what they do, not what they say.  The polls are just another way to convince people and make them feel comfortable in voting a certain way.  Honestly, her environmental issues have got me a little concerned considering she's giving till 2050 to get stuff done?  Meanwhile these energy companies are making big bucks.  I say 2020, 12 years to get this country off of oil and into something new.  She's giving the industry too long to get there act together in giving the consumers and the country what we need.
Sierra SF. You need to see the light, like I did this morning.  I had a dream, and Hillary was president.  I was so happy when I woke up, but saddened because it wasn't real.  I can't wait to cast my vote for Hillary in the primary and then in the general election.  I am so happy she's running for president!  Go Hillary!
Penny,
When a person puts him/herself in the running for the office of the President of the US, they are fair game for criticism.  That includes Senator Clinton.  Do not act that because she is a woman she is exempt.  When you run for such an office, you must be prepared to defend all accusations.  As a woman, I do not want to hear that she is being picked on by the guys.  She has been in the political business for years and hold her own with the best of them.  If she can't she needs to drop out - now.
Barack Obama has unveiled a new line of criticism against Hillary: In speeches he's started to point to the allegation made in Jeff Gerth and Don Van Natta's Hillary book that the Clintons secretly formulated a 20-year-plan to deliver the presidency first to Bill, and then to Hillary.

"I'm not in this race to fulfill some long-held plan or because it was owed to me," Obama said the other day.

Asked if that were a reference to the Gerth allegation, an Obama spokesperson left virtually no doubt that it was, telling Newsday: "Barack Obama has not been mapping out his run for president from Washington for the last 20 years like some of his opponents."

But the source that Gerth and Van Natta cited with supposed first-hand knowledge of this plan -- historian Taylor Branch -- has since vehemently denied that any such pact existed. "The story is preposterous," Branch told The Washington Post, adding: "I never heard either Clinton talk about a 'plan' for them both to become president."

It's hard to see how the use of Gerth's allegations could possibly play well among Dem activists. Many of them dislike Gerth for his role in "breaking" the Whitewater story and see Gerth's book as an anti-Hillary hatchet job.
GWB did accomplish ridding a country of a sadistic, dangerous family.  GWB had some inaccurate info regarding WMD's but then, so did his advisors, and oh yeah!  Hillary Clinton!  So if she says GWB lied, I guess she did too!
You idiot people, don't be fooled these two guys, who is critizing Mrs. Clinton.  Of course, they want to win to be as a President. Would you think these two guys are TRUSTED to?  I don't think so, they are all the same. I am voting for Senator Clinton.

Wow! I hadn't realized that there was so much Clinton-hating out there; that said, I'm not sure why.

I think on the matter of trust, Hillary's work in public service speaks for itself.  Her measured, analytical and deliberate manner lends itself to being a leader one can trust; not distrust.  Any ambiguities that may create only means she is trying to consider all contingencies and balance all interests effectively.

I must say that so much of the animosity must be because she is a woman...that I find reprehensible.
If Mrs. Clinton gets the nod, mark my words "we lose", then watch all ring their hands and say why did we support her.  When almost 50% of the voters do not see any postives in her, watch out.  I don't want the GOP to win and putting her as our number 1 makes their job a lot easier.
The Clinton's were scum bags then & they're scum bags still. It's nightmarish to imagine those 2 frauds back in thr White house. What are you lefties thinking? Have you forgotten the international disgrace that was Bill Clinton?
Trust can not be earned by ad but by action i.e. by living a life that earns peoples confidence and trsut.
This couple, the Clintons, look into the TV camera, point fingures to the American people and lie with a straight face. They even can lie under oath. I am not making it up but just remembering from history.

How can we trust them again? Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. I don't want to earn shame for myself and I am a registered democrat.
Er, Ron?  The mud is flung from both sides of the fence.  There are plenty of people posing as Hillary supporters as well.
Bee:

Who said he was phony?  All the piece said was that he had been in an ad for her Senate campaign.  It did not say, as you insinuate, that what he said in this ad or the other was incorrect.
It is so encouraging to see that the majority of people that post on First Read are not supporting Hillary.  It gives me hope that we have a shot to win back the White House back in '08.  Obama/Edwars '08!!!  It's obvious that we are not as ignorant as the vast Hillary campaign conspiracy would like us to be.  Trust her?  About as far as I could throw her..I'm out of shape and her lower half looks like it weighs twice as much as her upper half so that's not very far at all...
I find this debate over Hillary Clintons trustworthiness fascinating.  Stop wasting time, this lady has been in the public eye for the last 30 + years, what has she done that we can not trust her to do a better job at running this country than George Bush or any other republican or democratic candidate in this race.  We, (Republican, Democrat and Independent), all know she has the most experience of any one in the race , and  ability to hit the ground running on day one.  Lets put the partisan politics aside and put the first woman and best candidate in this race in the Whitehouse and get this county back to where we need it to be. Some of you still trust George Bush, go figure.

Here is an interesting article on Madam Clinton and her so called experience.

Thanks, Bee maybe some of the Hillary express will get their heads out oof their proverbial a#s*s and wake up.  This lady will cost us the election and she is bad for the country.  It's such a shame too because I think the American public is ready for a strong woman to become President...just not this one not by a long shot.  She doesn't have the full support of Democratic voters, independants and most certainly Republicans and with good reason, no experience everyone with half a brain knows she changes her views and opinions based on polls as often as the wind shifts direction.  She stands for nothing and if it is something it's not the same something it was when it was nothing.  I wonder if we'll hear such gems as depending on what the meaning of the word 'is' is.  There are enough smart hard working people that should, should see what this wretched excuse for a Democratic Presidential nominee really is, we can only hope.
I see the Clinton "haters" are in full force again.
I wonder how many of these "haters" trusted G.W.B.
when he ran for President.  Doubt any would admit
they trusted him then and still do today.
67% of New Yorkers voted for her re- election. She must of done something right. The more people see the real Hillary (not the image presented by cartoon characters on Am radio and Fox noise host)! Great Ad!
The pathetic repubs tryed to say Bill was untrustworthy and he was the most effective President
since FDR.  The Clintons are policy wonks, they love government that's why they are good. Repubs talk tough, come up with foolish economic policies that dems have to clean up,start wars, use divisive politics
and invade other countries.  The repub revolution will be offically over next November.  How can America vote for Guiliani if his own kids despise him.
Hillary 2008 The President of these United States Of America.

Everyone talking about change. what changes will be there and how do you know that the changes will be good in long term aspect.
I remember Bush saying that he would not nation build, he thought it was a bad idea, yada yada yada..4 years later, we have war with two countries, both preludes to nation building, and healthcare costs have skyrocketed along with the deficit.  I'm not bush bashing here, just using the example that none of them can be trusted.  I agree with the poster who said, tell us what your going to do..not what you've done.  I could care less if they smoked pot, had sex with a dog..doesn't matter..all that matters to me, is that they do what they say they are gonna do, and that they do it right.  I'm not about to put them to the moral compass test, because if we do that..we won't have any leadership fit to lead.
I want Hillary Clinton to be our next president of the united states  because i have faith in her and her leadership u go girl.
This why I hate you democrats. You have no guts. You are bunch of hypocrites fearing republicans and always cave in under their assaults. This is propaganda about hillary and you just get stuck and do the work of these dogs called Republicans. Look, they will vote any dog republicans to beat up Democrats. You never learn. Name any bad things about hillary. Why don't you shot your big mouth and vote the lady. Play the same game as the Republicans. As far as Obama and Edward they have no chance of survival in the general election. Obama will never be President because he is Black; this the truth and you can't deny it. On election day, the dreamers will give him a 10% and a republican will get the presidency with 90% of the vote. If he ever get nominated it is a 100% losss for the Dems. Be Practical and smart!
*** LOOK AT THE LAST "REPUBLICAN" YOU TRUSTED TO BE YOUR PRESIDENT.. GEORGE "WORTHLESS" BUSH. TRILLION UPON TRILLION OF DOLLARS OF DEBT.TALK ABOUT A PARTY YOU CAN NOT TRUST, JUST LOOK NO FURTHER THAN THE REPUBLICAN...BUSH ADMINISTRATION. THEY ARE STEALING YOU AND ME BLIND !

I neither trust GWB or HRC. Both of them are liars.
WOW, i see why nothing will ever gets done in the White House.  No one trusts each other, Republicans don't trust Democrats, Democrats don't trust Republicans.

How do you expect to end the war in Irag, get something done on Social Security, Iran and much more.  I guess people forgot what teamwork is all about.

You can't even trust a video, have you ever looked yourself in the mirror and asked,   Can I ever be trusted?   Maybe you should because doubters can never be trusted.

What does it really take for you to trust anyone when you doubt that no one can be trusted.  Mission Accomplished!
I am sure that all of you against Hillary are Republicans deguised into Dems. I will vote her no matter what you say. Edward and Obama cannot and will not be President. 100% sure.
This why I hate you democrats. You have no guts. You are bunch of hypocrites fearing republicans and always cave in under their assaults. How can we be practical and smart? By voting for whom? Please don't say Hillary because your credibility as a New Yorker will be put to test.

Please tell us how we can be practical and smart

same guy in ad in 2006 and now again in 2007?  sounds to me like he's the only one they can find in an entire year that TRUSTS Hillary Clinton!  Not such a great track record!
Yada yada yada.
What Bill Clinton's did the past, doesn't do anything. At least, he didn't get put on America on BIG DEBT, HE LEAD THE COUNTRY FOR POSITIVE NOT IN NEGATIVE. Sen. Clinton  running for President for herself .  Come on American People wake up, she is the most electible and
experienced candidate we have compared this two guys who are bashing Sen. Clinton. Those who hate Sen. Clinton are machunist and racist because she is woman.  We are already in year 2000's
Let's face it there are equal opportunity now.  Let's give her a chance to lead the America for the shake of our children and grandkids in the future. Let's give our TRUST  to her,my fellow American be positive. Let's vote for Sen.Clinton.
I don't think many would be so quick to trust Hillary if they thought honestly for one minute: do I really want Hillary to have the same powers George Bush has right now?
You know how I know Hilliary is the next president all the topics seem to include her, which means she must be the most popular and the best sell for everyone right, left, and center.EVERYONE makes money,YEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
Twice New York elected Hillary to the US Senate.  She works hard and she is very capable.  She definitely has her devisive issues and baggage concerns, but it would be great if we had someone who had the capacity and willingness to do the job.  Remember that Compasionate Conservative?  Was it worth suffering through Bush/Cheney/Rumsfield Neo Cons and their fake religious Christian fervor because nobody liked Al Gore's stiff personality and his supposed lies about the internet.

Hillary takes a lot of criticism and abuse and has yet to walk away.  Maybe not a friend for me, but definitely a President.
