More on the Obama mailer

As mentioned below, Obama's mailing to New Hampshire voters contains references to GOP Sens. Tom Coburn and Dick Lugar. Indeed, on the campaign trail, Obama likes to tout his record with working with Republicans on key pieces of legislation to prove that he's really a candidate who can cross the partisan divide. He frequently mentions Coburn (R-OK) and Lugar (R-IN), having worked with them on two separate pieces of legislation.

Regarding Coburn, Obama usually says that he's a man he has little in common with, but Obama was able to work with him to pass legislation that created a public database to disclose how federal monies were being sent. Regarding Lugar, Obama frequently says he admires Lugar a great deal, and he even mentioned him at Thursday's Democratic debate in Las Vegas.

But despite the warm words and relationship, Senator Lugar's office had no idea that the Obama campaign was sending out a mailer. According to Lugar's press secretary, Andy Fisher, Obama and Lugar traveled together to Russia in 2005 to work on nuclear non-proliferation issues where they first developed a close relationship. But Fisher wouldn't say if Obama's public embrace of their relationship was a good or a bad thing with Lugar's Republican base.

"There's plenty of material on our Web site and Senator Obama's indicating that relationship," Fisher said, adding that Lugar has good relationships with many Democrats.

Fischer went on the say that their office wasn't told about the mailer, saying, "They are a campaign and they can do what they want to do."

*** Update *** John Hart, Coburn's communications director, says that a mailer citing Obama's relationship with the conservative Oklahoman is "completely fair," since the two share a strong personal and working relationship. "In Washington, you have two types of politicians -- those who are hyper-partisan and committed only to their own re-election and their party's, and you have those who are committed to a set of ideals. I think both Obama and Coburn fall into that category. So we can have a friendly debate on the issues we are opposed on, but there's a consensus against stupidity. No one liberal or conservative wants to see the government waste money and wants to see government transparency and accountability."

Hart added that the relationship between Obama and Coburn was unique because they are also friends, but that Coburn has also worked with other Democrats including Henry Waxman and Russ Feingold.

Speaking of Obama.  Here is a link to the actual exchange with that lady yesterday that msnbc decided to cherry pick in their video.  The same one to cause C. todd to declare Obama seemed to be 'frazzled.'
the actual exchange is much more enlightening in that Obama was NOT frazzled but, that the lady was insisting the democrats cannot protect her as well as republicans.
And she was a republican but, found Obama a very smart man

obama  tsk tsk
I've always had a lot of respect for Lugar and was thrilled to see him and Obama working together. It really gives you a glimpse of what kind of president he'd make. Barack works across the aisle while Hillary just points.
Where's the beef? It's all on the Congressional Record, isn't it? It better be. I paid for the ink.
This is disgusting trickery on Osama's part! Mailings! How can he sleep at night!  All those dead trees!  Doesn't anyone care about the trees!  And how about the whales being hunted by the japanese!  I blame Bush for not stopping that.  I know for sure if Hillary were president, we'ld have more whales and trees.
I don't know what the point of this news story is?

Is Mark Murray trying to insinuate that Obama did something wrong by citing some legislation on which he worked with Republicans to accomplish some good?  Because Lugar didn't know?  I don't think Obama referred to Lugar as his "best friend" or anything...

The mailer is actually very inciteful and proves the kind of strong candidate Obama really is...
I think that video from Iowa is extremely helpful to Obama.  He was taking on Republican talking points, and he finally uttered the comeback that we've been waiting to hear from Democrats for six years; if Kerry had had the balls to talk like that in 2004, he would have been elected.  Any candidate who wants to win the Democratic nomination or the Presidency has to show that they will take on Republican talking points head on.
The latest USA Today Gallup Poll of all registered voters:

Clinton (52% favorable, 45% unfavorable, +7 pts)
Obama (53% favorable, 30% unfavorable, +23 pts)
Edwards (50% favorable, 31% unfavorable, +19 pts)

Gee, fellow democrats, which of these ones doesn't look like the others.  Get a clue!  Hillary is not electable in the general election.  Not only will you Hillary supporters cost us the presidency, all of those Republicans that would stay home on voting day because of anger with their own party would now be energized to show up at the voting booth.  You don't think that will cost Democrats in other positions at both a local and national level?

Edwards/Obama or Obama/Edwards '08
Cozy up to Cobeun and Lugar just to prove electability? Yikes...

"Cozy up to Cobeun and Lugar just to prove electability? Yikes..."

So instead of working with others to bring progress, regardless of political party, Obama shouldn't work with them just because they're Republicans?  That's definitely the mindset of the current Congress, the worst that the United States has ever had to deal with.  I don't care who belongs to what party, if the individuals themselves don't work together to find solutions, then those individuals do NOT deserve any sort of authority.  The only one out there who isn't at least working with the other party to try and solve problems is Clinton.  How evil of Obama to talk about something good that he's actually doing...
Chuck  Todd just saw you on MSNBC... the topic was nasty campaigns:

When you ralked about the Republicans you discussed the push polls but when you discussed democrats you talked about Obama in IA showing a Cut and paste of the actual video.

BTW the lady said at the end:  After the session concluded, Ms. Svoboda said she found Mr. Obama to be “a very smart man.” But, she added, she is leaning toward supporting a Republican, particularly because of her concern over illegal immigration.

More importantly why in talking about nasty campaigns did you not bring up the Novak  article.  Instead you only tried to protray Obama under stress.  Clinton has put the word out to change the subject I see.  They don't want any more press on this...guess that says alot.

Good thing people now have more than oneplace to get the news and spread the word.  Its a sad day when Democrats have to rely on FOX to provide accurate news
Barack Obama has unveiled a new line of criticism against Hillary: In speeches he's started to point to the allegation made in Jeff Gerth and Don Van Natta's Hillary book that the Clintons secretly formulated a 20-year-plan to deliver the presidency first to Bill, and then to Hillary.

"I'm not in this race to fulfill some long-held plan or because it was owed to me," Obama said the other day.

Asked if that were a reference to the Gerth allegation, an Obama spokesperson left virtually no doubt that it was, telling Newsday: "Barack Obama has not been mapping out his run for president from Washington for the last 20 years like some of his opponents."

But the source that Gerth and Van Natta cited with supposed first-hand knowledge of this plan -- historian Taylor Branch -- has since vehemently denied that any such pact existed. "The story is preposterous," Branch told The Washington Post, adding: "I never heard either Clinton talk about a 'plan' for them both to become president."

It's hard to see how the use of Gerth's allegations could possibly play well among Dem activists. Many of them dislike Gerth for his role in "breaking" the Whitewater story and see Gerth's book as an anti-Hillary hatchet job.

Do you think anyone takes your posing seriously?  A poll with a +/- of 23 points is not a real poll.  You made that all up!  Go Hillary!
Any candidate who thinks that 'turning up the heat on Republicans' per the media-coronated-inevitable one's new slogan, will get anything done is sadly mistaken. Our forefathers set up the gov't to function in a way that calls for bipartisanship. Many Repubs do agree with Dems on certain issues(such as the environment). e.g. Teddy Roosevelt, a Repub, cared about the environment. You cannot lead a country by 'flaming' against EVERYONE on the other side of the aisle. Barack Obama worked with both sides in Illinois, and will do so as POTUS.
On the other hand, the prematurely coronated-inevitable-one's campaign will bring us 4 years of gridlock mainly because the Repub 'base' does not trust/like/ or respect her(ask that woman at the McCain Q&A session a few days ago).
We cannot govern with a 50+1% majority.
Barack Obama is absolutely correct.
Can Obama name more than 2 Republicans?

Hillary worked with so many Republicans in Senate over the years and in the committees. She even worked with Newt Gingrich to ensure the country benefits first!

Wait Obama had only 2 years in Senate. Sorry, that's not enough to show real bi-partisan ship.

If it is enough, then look at Obama's votes. They are all partisan whenever needed. Does that mean he is working across the aisle?

Think!!
Simon in Iowa, can you name more than one Republican Hilary worked with?  I find it amusing you asked for obama to name more than 2 Republican, yet you only named 1 that Hilary has worked with. LOL
Here comes The Messiah, anyone should bow to him.

Amen
Obama smokes.  How can you elect a smoker! Bill's cigars don't count.
It was also reported that there was some push poll calls against Sen Clinton and former Sen John Edwards, but no one is talking about that.
Did anyone else notice the irony in Hillary's J-J speech?  She went on and on about "turning up the heat" on Bush and the Republicans.  Obviously, it was designed to jazz up her supporters in attendance, but the whole rant came on the heels of her saying that it's wrong to point fingers across the aisle and do nothing but blame others for all that's wrong.  Isn't that just a little ironic?  How does she expect to work well with those across the aisle when she's focusing not on issues, but on a slogan aimed directly across that aisle?

Obama is in this to solve problems for the country, not to seek power like Hillary.  It is not a matter of time in the Senate - lord knows we've had idiots there who've accomplished nothing over many more than one term - it's about the quality of what you've done in the time you've been there.  Obama doesn't just talk about it.  He actually DOES something positive.
@ Pat -- the poll numbers aren't saying that there is a 23 point swing, but rather a 23 point difference in those that have a favorable opinion of Obama versus those that have an unfavorable one. Same goes for the info on the other candidates.
About bipartisanship - it appears that Mark Murray tried to "nail" Obama about the responsible Republicans he's worked with disapproving with his mention of them - and now those Republican senators say that they are perfectly fine with Obama mentioning them.  It appears that Mark, you have tried to manufacture a story and have had it backfire.

And yes, it seems the Edwards camp has been doing push polls against Obama and Clinton is Iowa.  (They ask positive questions about Edwards and very negative questions about Obama and Clinton.)
I love the New Hampshire mailer and the fact that Barack Obama is the first Democratic candidate in a very long time who is appealing to Independent and Republican voters.
I believe we, the american people, have made the Clintons and the Bushes rich within the past 24 years by electing them and continueing to elect them and our country and the issues that we have is not getting any better.  The Clintons cannot wait to move back into the White House.  The US government and its people need to wake up and elect somebody fresh with not alot of baggage.  Boy, I sure do miss the Reagan years.
Pat Ny...you should shut up until your candidate loses about 30 lbs.

Obama stop smoking why don't you run around the track 100 times with fatty.

BTW the Clinton  camp probably doesn't want you reminding people about smoking (cigars)  LOL

Hillary allows Bill to get a blow job? How can you elect a pimp mistress?
I also watched Chuck Todd's conment and I totally agree with him, sharp point. Not many people now really "read between lines". This is a great way to move voters attention from last debate problem to something else and they did it. Poeple now talk about this new development, not debate anymore. But, it does show Obama not experinced side.

Simon, Iowa

Look if you want to judge a candidate on Bi-partisanship, respect among the GOP, and actual results then the only choice is Biden. As the video says "Joe Is Right". No one comes close to Biden in respect among his peers in both parties.

And with respect to Hillary working so closely with others, can a Hillary supporter please name one piece of legislation that Hillary sponsored, or was one of less than 3 co-sponsors (don't name one of those 99 co-sponsor pieces of legislation)that is law today. In almost 7 years in the Senate what has this Queen of bi-partisanship accomplished?. Yes Hillary fans it will be 7 in January, right now she has less than a full year more in the Senate than Edwards.

Also repeatedly claiming to have 35 years as a child advocate, or being ready on day one, doesn't make it true!
Ron, Tx
I'm not sure what the point of this story is either. Seems to me that if Obama has a good working relationship with some Republicans, that is a point in his favor.  That's what we need in this country--politicians who put the people's business before partisanship. If more in Congress were willing to establish better working relationships with member of the opposition, perhaps more work could get done.
Simon, Iowa: '...She even worked with Newt Gingrich to ensure the country benefits first!...'

I hope they didn't stay in the same room too long..
That's enough evil to bring back Freddy Krueger !!

Simon, I can't think of two more worthless politicians.
Together they make George Bush and Dick Cheney look wholesome.

Clinton/Gingrich, a ticket for brain-dead zombies
Clinton/Gingrich, the evil of banality

It is amazing what worthless politicians this country produces.... Clinton, Bush, Cheney, Gingrich, Reagan ...
Can you say 'hell in a hand basket'

Hillary Clinton, cold, calculating, dishonest, unethical
Pat from NY,

Are you blind?! I even listed the source of the data (USA Today/Gallup).  Go to www.pollingreport.com to see for yourself.

Face it, Hillary is HATED not only by Republicans, but by Democrats as well.  I will not sit by and let moronic Hillary supporters continue to ruin this country and the Democratic party with their blind love of all things Hillary.  She is the worse thing that could have happened to the Democratic party for '08!!

Edwards/Obama or Obama/Edwards '08

Hillary's entire message of experience is wrong-headed and misinformed.  It's very hard to imagine 28 years of a Bush or a Clinton in the White House.  This whole family dynasty business is what is absolutely wrong with our Republic and exactly why Obama is so refreshing.
The south will not vote for Obama---even though they say they will----karls trickery again.
<<Hillary worked with so many Republicans in Senate over the years and in the committees. She even worked with Newt Gingrich to ensure the country benefits first! >>
This from Simon...

I had to wipe Cherry Coke off my computer screen after reading this. She worked with Newt Gingrich. Bulls--t. What did she accomplish with Newt? What she did for Newt was get him elected Speaker of the House and the Contract With America after she totally, and almost single-handedly f--ked up Bill's otherwise good idea for unversal healthcare.

Worked with Newt...AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
I SAW BARACK OBAMA AT NOON TODAY ON MSNBC STATING THAT UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCE WOULD HE ENGAGE IN DIRTY POLITICS - HAD SOMETHING TO DO WITH ROBERT NOVAK(?).
A BREATH OF FRESH AIR!!!FINALLY!!!
It is sad that Obama can not show up for his job and vote on Bills.  I would think he could bipartisan some time with his own Dem's and get more done.  Why is this guy such a slacker? How many votes has he missed?  How many days has he not been in the Senate to do his job?  Is this going on for another year?  Do we have to pay him?
<<Hillary worked with so many Republicans in Senate over the years and in the committees. She even worked with Newt Gingrich to ensure the country benefits first! >>

Sorry Mike it is true and you must accept facts.
Professor "Holier than Thou" Obama is so immature and silly and you people have fallen for his pie in the sky mishmash.  An Obama presidency may make old George look down right intelligent and experienced.
Wake Up, People.  Prof. O is not ready for prime time and we will have a Rep. president thanks to the selfish greediness of a man who could not wait to be president...I want it now, I want it now, says Prof. Holier than thou.
Hillary's experience with 4000 death, 3000 wounded in Iraq thanks a lot.....lololololololol Obama is what we need now not text book.

Yes, that's all we need is Obama for president and the United States will go into a depression like in 1929. He is full of new ideas? He's lucky he can think of new idea's. He lacks experience, knowledge, ability and intelligence plus he is a terrible speaker. The only reason he wants that presidency so bad he can taste it is because he is black not because he wants to make changes. Who's kidding who. I read between the lines on him and they are not good. I am waiting for Bill Clinton to campaign for Hillary and what a difference that will make. He is well liked in all the states. No matter what you think of him as president your just another pebble on the beach. Wait until he goes to Iowa with her what a difference that will make in the polls. Changes yes, but not by Obama. The only thing he can change is dollar bills.
@ H P Boston,

Here's a list of the votes missed in the Senate. I'm only including the dems in this.  The person w/ the most non-medical reason for a missed vote is John McCain.

Senators Missing Votes
Joe Biden - 146/412
Chris Dodd - 140/412
Barack Obama - 139/412
Hillary Clinton - 76/412

Legislative Experience by Candidate
Joe Biden - 35yrs (Senator)
Chris Dodd - 34yrs (28yrs Senate & 6yrs in US rep)
Mike Gravel - 16 (12yrs Senate & 4yrs state legislator)
Bill Richardson - 15yrs US Representative, 4yrs Governor of New Mexico
Dennis Kucinich - 13 (11yrs Congressman, 2yrs state legislator), 2yrs as Mayor
Barack Obama - 11 (3yrs Senator & 8yrs state legislator)
Hillary Clinton - 7 (Senator)
John Edwards - 6 (Senator)

Stop saying Hillary is the experience candidate. Continuing to say it, doesn't make it true.
The plan of the Republican Party is not to get Hillary elected.  They feel that if Obama gets the nod he will be an easier target for them.  Do we really want an inexperience president we already know what happens.  I know that a lot of people just hate the Clintons especially the Republicans because they know they are tough to beat.  Orach Hussein Obama give me a break.
OBAMA WILL GET THE USA MOVING IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION

OBAMA 08
Now, look who's talking...is Mr. Obama living up to his claim of politics of change and in fact he has claiming his ties to the existing government...it's too bad that Mr. Obama would always feel bad if Mrs. Clinton would give her assessment on him but OK to  him and the media throwing mud to Mrs. Clinton...so unfair!..give Mrs. Clinton a break..Here is a great person who only want to make our country Great again..why people can not give her that opportunity?

Another worth mentioning is Mr. Chris of Hardball..if he hates Mrs. Clinton (so obvious watching his show) then say it straight in his program...Why Mr. Chris?..did Mrs. Clinton did something wrong to you?
2006 Quote from Sen. Tom Coburn (Republican  Oklahoma): “What Washington does is cause everybody to concentrate on where they disagree as opposed to where they agree. But leadership changes that. And Barack’s got the capability, I believe—and the pizzazz and the charisma—to be a leader of America, not a leader of Democrats.”
In 2005, a Russian newspaper announcing Lugar's visit (with Obama) ran a picture from Lugar's 1996 campaign. According to The Chicago Tribune, the campaign photo prompted someone to ask Lugar if he would consider running for president again. The old lion shook his head and passed the torch. "That's for Barack," he said.  (Lugar Obama nonpoliferation bill passed)
