Obama speaks on past drug use

Posted: Tuesday, November 20, 2007 3:12 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ’s Aswini Anburajan and NBC’s Domenico Montanaro
Obama
today talked to a group of high school students in New Hampshire about his adolescent drug use, drinking alcohol and being a “goof off” in high school. It is certainly not the first time Obama has spoken on the subject of his drug use, but it is the first time he has discussed it on the campaign trail. Obama wrote at length on it in his best-selling memoir, Dreams from My Father.

VIDEO: Barack Obama tells a study hall room at Manchester, N.H.'s Central High School that he "got into drinking and experimenting with drugs" when he was in high school.

He was asked by the principal of the school to “Give us a human side,” talk about his favorite subject, what subjects he struggled with and what clubs and sports he participated in.”

“I will confess to you that I was kind of a goof off in high school as my mom reminded me,” Obama said. “I went to high school in Hawaii, so there’s a lot of opportunity to goof off because the weather is really good all the time. I did well in school, but I didn’t really apply myself. I did what I needed to, to get into college, and it came fairly easily to me, but I never worked as hard as I should have.

“I was big on basketball; I was a basketball player. We were state champs. I thought I was better than I was. But I just loved the game and I played basketball a lot. I thought about girls a lot.

“You know, I made some bad decisions…. You know, got into drinking and experimenting with drugs. There was a whole stretch of time where I didn’t apply myself. It wasn’t until I got out of … high school, and went to college that I started realizing, man, I wasted a lot of time.

“When I started college, I started noticing, why some places are poor others rich. Why is it that we spend all this money on our military, but we don’t spend it on our schools? Why is it that women aren’t always treated the same as men… a lot of questions that started bubbling up in my mind.

“I realized if I had spent a little more time reading, and studying that I could actually have some influence in the world. So I did a lot of catching up when I got to college. By the time I was a junior and senior, in college I got real serious. In fact, I was so serious my mother told me to lighten up. Fortunately, over time, I got a little balance.”

As we mentioned, Obama wrote on the subject in Dreams. Here’s an excerpt:
“I blew a few smoke rings, remembering those years. Pot had helped, and booze; maybe a little blow when you could afford it. Not smack, though -- Mickey, my potential initiator, had been just a little too eager for me to go through with that. Said he could do it blind-folded, but he was shaking like a faulty engine when he said it. Maybe he was just cold; we were standing in a meat freezer in the back of the deli where he worked and it couldn’t have been more than 20 degrees in there. But he didn’t look like he was shaking from th ecold. Looked more like he was sweating, his face shiny and tight. He had pulled out the needle and the tubing, and I’d looked at him standing there, surrounded by big slabs of salami and roast beef, and right then an image popped into my head o fan air bubble, shiny and round like a pearly rolling quietly through a vein and stopping my heart….

“Junkie. Pothead. That’s where I’d been headed: the final, fatal role of the young would-be black man. Except the highs hadn’t been about that, me trying to prove what a down brother I was. Not by then, anyway. I got high for just the opposite effect, something that could push questions of who I was out of my mind, something that could flatten out the landscape of my heart, blur the edges of my memory.”

*** UPDATE *** From NBC's Matthew Berger
Giuliani on Obama: “I respect his honesty in doing that,” Giuliani said of Obama speaking about his drug use. “I think that one of the things we need from our people who are running for office is not this pretense of perfection. And the reality is all of us that run for public office, whether its governor, legislator, mayor, president, we are all human beings. If we haven’t made mistakes don’t vote for us. Cause we got some big ones that are gonna happen in the future and we won’t know how to handle them.”

Giuliani has been stressing that he is not perfect as a way of countering questions about his personal life. It has been an active theme at debates and even appeared in both of his recent television ads.

Now it is very humane for him to admit his errors of judgment as a youth and how he overcome it to reach this stage in his political career. If all politicians can be this honest the world will be a better place...I will be voting for him as he is very honest and sincerely in talking to these children about the flaws of Drugs...
Oh boy....so what.   Big deal.  Who hasn't!
Finally, a candidate of candor!
I'll bet he didn't drink himself through Yale, relying on the old man's money, though...!
Good move Barack! Talking about this can only help your cause with the left-wingers.
Indeed, Obama has been the only one to openly speak about it, and how he turned his life around.  Bill Clinton and George W. Bush both lied about their past drug use.

All of the democratic candidates from 2004 (Edwards, Dean, etc.) except for Joe Lieberman have admitted to drug use, but did not speak about it more than that.

What we need is a president who can inspire wayward youth to turn their lives around when they are stuck.
I think it is great that he is being honest and made something of himself, but I think back to high school and the kids who drank and took drugs. I think that I will vote for somebody else.

obama went to a private high school... did he mention that?

With Obama, you get honesty. With Clinton INC., you get half truths (e.g. I didn't inhale). This was shrewd move by Guiliani. I think those two will battle it out for President.
I think the days of eliminating candidates because of their drug use are long gone.  I give props to Obama for sharing that and to Giuliani for praising Obama.  You don't see that very often in politics.

Yikes! Did I just praise Giuliani?
Finally, a candidate that admits he inhaled.I'd take honesty over experience any day.Experiencce in politics means you're just a better liar.Obama '08
Go Obama! Even Rudy respects your honesty too. Obama 08!
As a teacher, I never was impressed with those assemblies when we had a reformed smoker, drug addict, or alcoholic speak to our students.

I wanted to hear the person, as a role model, who said, "I never did drugs and I'm proud of it.  I was smart enough from the beginning to not fall into that trap and you can be that smart, too."

Why do we always ignore those people and hold up those who didn't have what it took to do their best in school, and stay away from drugs?

Frankly I'm not impressed with "do as I say but don't do as I did."  I'm not impressed with true confessions later in life while calling someone else dishonest.
This is certainly a good way for Obama to connect with his base voters, most of whom are junkies.
Good for Obama. Hillary lived in an insulated enviroment until she hooked up with bill. I hope this chips away at hillary and the medias perception that she is invincible.
This is honesty at his best. We want a president that will be honest with us in all cases. Enough of Mr. Perfection and Mrs. Calculation; We want a president that can admit mistake and move on.
Oh my god, Barack was a high school goof -off?? Well, there goes the National Honor Society vote!! I'd rather have someone who is honest about their past mistakes than a robot like HILLARY , who would probably tell you that she always did all her homework and ate her vegetables and went to Sunday school every week. Come on Iowa; send the Battleaxe from New York back to the Senate, where she can stay out of the way and not do any harm to the U.S.
Why bring this up now ? Could this be the "scandal" secret everone is talking about ? Something is going on, I can just feel it.
Obama's openness and honesty regarding this matter is very refreshing after the tortured non-denial denials of our last two presidents, Bill Clinton and George W. Bush.  In the case of both men, their failures to come clean and own up to their irresponsible pasts were unfortunate indicators of their frequent willingness to fib and fudge, as well as their general inabilities to be straight and honest with the American people regarding a variety of far more important matters.
There is much more to this story.
Its great to see a candidate who can own up to their real history, even those details that are frowned upon. Rather than get cornered later for trying to avoid it and allowing the secrecy to snowball into controversy, its great that Obama comes out with these kind of details. If you own it, then you're not vulnerable. Its about time America got over silly personal life choices in choosing a president. Most people have tried drugs, we have a gigantic divorce rate in this country, and there are so many other problems that are far too common to treat as taboo when exemplified by our elected officials.
Snippets of candid honesty and sincerity in a presendential campaign...what is the world coming to?

Bravo, Sen. Obama for your honesty; bravo, Rudy for your sincere expression of respect!

I am sure it is only a matter of moments before the paragon of sincerity, Sen. Clinton, has something nice to say too...well, then again, maybe I won't hold my breath.
I guess he "enhaled". Well at least he was truthful.
I feel the same way as Pat stated above: So What!
At least he was honest about it and I will vote for him.  "Whose closet is clear of skeleton?"
I think this is a sign of the times, people are now more open to accepting candidates' pasts regarding drugs, sex, law breakages, etc.  Remember the "but I didn't inhale"s? I think as a society we've moved past that.
To Pat in NY, I haven't done it so it is a big deal to have a politician no less admit flaws.  Too often these folks come across as holier than thou and have more skeletons in their closet than bodies buried in the cemetary with all due respect to those who have passed on.
i like that obama is real about his drug use it makes him seem more human more like the rest of us way to go obama
Sen Obama is damned if he do and damned if he don't.  I don't know anyone who hasn't done something stupid as a kid.  What I appreciated is the honesty.  That's what makes this a big deal.

Hillary came out the would and went straight to law school.  You'll never hear her admit to anything like this be it drugs or not.  I don't want perfection in my president, honesty will go a long way.

By the way Hillary.........you have the power to release your WH docs, so what's the holdup?
"Oh boy...so what. Big deal.Who hasn't!"? Yeah, you sound like a follower instead of a leader. There are literally hundreds of thousands who CHOSE not to. At least he's not denying it, unlike our recoving alcoholic coke sniffing president. Granted, we all are subject to redemption but as alcoholics know, it's one step and one day at a time. Knowing that, alcoholics should not be president of the free world material.
That's okay...  We've had whore-mongers, drunks, draft-dodgers and those who escaped the horrors of Vietnam by serving in units that did not deploy.  What's wrong with a little extremism?  Not doing so well in school to not taking a break from studies?  A little pot, whiskey and other drugs can't be all too bad for the person who is supposed to be the shining example for the rest of us.  Heck, I'm not going to throw any stones from my glass house!  But then again, I'm not running for president either.
Oh great now he tells kids don't worry if you do drugs and drink too much in high school or college because you will turn out just like me.

What kind of bullshit is this. I would be so angry if he went and told my 7th grader this story.  It's bad enough parents get the "all the other kids are doing it" story but now add to that "well Mr. Presidental Candidate Obama did it and he turned out okay." Shows absolutely poor judgment on the part of Obama and his staff.  It doesn't do anything for his image. First he falls for Novak's unsubstantiated story and now this. If he is nominated, it will be an interesting day to see how the Republican handle this brutal "honesty."
"Who hasn't!"? There are literally hundreds of thousands who CHOSE not to. At least he's not denying it, unlike our recoving alcoholic coke sniffing president. Granted, we all are subject to redemption but as alcoholics know, it's one step and one day at a time. Knowing that, alcoholics should not be president of the free world material.
I was shocked to read this, but mostly impressed by Obama's own hard look at his life.  Our choices must be made by acknowledging mistakes, learning from them and making what difference you can later.  I was waffling, but not anymore!
I HAVEN'T AND I DON'T WANT A PRESIDENT WHO HAS.  HUGH. GEORGIA, GA.
Isn't there anyone besides me who just said NO!  Concerned liberal democrat.
Pat,
Mitt Romney!
Lee, Marion, MA
I don't think this is candor....only 'get it out
before it 'gets' out......
True Honesty...What a concept!
This Saint Barack, he's just unbelievable.  He even did drugs.  How totally real.  What a dream candidate.  Swoooon.

I used to be a democrat, the stupid dems are giving the 08 election to the republicans.  I guess I will stay home.   All of dems do not care about americans they are more concerned about foreign countries and their citizens.  Forgot us.  I hope all of you are happy in the new world order.  That does not include America.  America is being sublet to other countries.
YES, BUT DID HE INHALE
Is this the same time he was forming his foreign policy experiance that he spoke of yesterday... Oh no that was when he was 10 years - he was much wiser and open to the world then...

Please... Why do people so take this guy serious...

In 8 more years maybe obame
He was very open and refreshing in his reflecting on his childhood.  Unless you grow  up in a bubble every child in the USA comes in contact w peers and so called friends who want to have you take drugs or alcohol.  We can't pretend that it does not happen.
I love Obama's directness and candor.  And he always tells you what he thinks about an issue rather than what you want to hear.  It's so refreshing and I think that is why he is attracting so much political support from independents, swing voters, and yes, even Republicans.
I admire him for his candid remarks.  None of us are perfect, and if we just put it out there, there is no room for judgement.  We ALL make mistakes.
He's just anticipating the Hillary smear leaked to novak.  By doing it himself there is no hiding it and it doesn't get sprung two days before the polls with no time to control.

Still I appreciate the candor and the willingness to control your own destiny.
ok so he is honest about it big freaking deal!!! i am sure he knew it was going to come out so that is where all this honesty crap comes from.  no not everyone does it, and your right to some it is no big deal, what hacks me off is him getting praise for telling it, guaranteed some one said i am going to tell this and he just beat them to the punch!!!
Now, that's worth taking a deep breath of relief. I remember reading it in his best-selling memoir written a few years ago before he even ran for office. We all made and still make mistakes. Some of us are just insincere - we prefer to parse or just lie about it !!!!!

Between: a gay-bashing Republican elected official who's secretly gay; a preacher's wife who murders her preacher husband; a Bishop who brutalizes his wife; arch-conservative pro-life Pat Robertson who endorsed pro-gay pro-abortion Giuliani; a self-righteous pastor caught cheating with his secretary; a divorce-hating televangelist who divorces her husband after 17 years of marriage; a Lewinsky-loving-lying president; a presidential candidate who isn't "sorry" for her Iraq war vote "mistake", and a to-be president Obama who speaks openly and voluntarily of his shortcomings. The choice is:

Barack Obama!

For the record, I'm a born-again, evangelical Republican For Obama.
Obviously Obama is o-brain damaged.  The fact that this jerk abused himself, his family, his so-called education, and short changed those in the greater community whom he could have served during these years does not offer reason to vote for him now.  Not impressed.  But the fact that he wants to socialize every aspect of our freedom loving American heritage and the fact his answer is always higher taxes....now there are 2 phenomenal reasons to send this aberation back to Krypton.
"Oh boy....so what. Big deal. Who hasn't!"

Uh, I haven't.
