Obama hits back on foreign policy

Posted: Tuesday, November 20, 2007 7:15 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ's Aswini Anburajan
CONWAY, NH-- In response to Clinton’s dig at his foreign policy credentials (and a similar shot by the RNC), Obama struck back.

"We just had a little exchange, Sen. Clinton and myself today,” Obama told voters here. “I had mentioned that one of the reasons that I got it right when it came to Iraq was because I had lived overseas as a child. It gives me some judgment and perspective around what other people think about America and how they might react or respond when we make some of the decisions that we make.

“And, of course, both the Republicans in their talking points as well as Sen. Clinton said we don't think that what Sen. Obama did when he was 10 years old is relevant to our national security. I didn't say that. She went on to make up the point, that some of the Republicans have made that she's met with all these world leaders. I was wondering which world leader told her that we needed to invade Iraq because that is the conventional thinking that we're going to have to break."

The flurry of comments and responses are indicative of a campaign that has heated up with less than 45 days to go before the first nominating contest in Iowa. Obama, who has usually shied away from attacking Clinton on the stump, now appears ready and willing to engage, calling her out on her record routinely in town halls.

He also criticized her shift on NAFTA today at a town hall in Alton, Iowa, saying that she had praised NAFTA just one year ago. Obama questioned Clinton's commitment to bring real change to Washington, because she had changed her positions on the trade bill.

"When somebody has a different response now then they did a year before or two years before or five years before,” Obama said, “then you can't count on them fighting for what they say they’re going to fight for now.”

Good man. Let her keep serving up softballs, oblivious to how damaging to her own credibility they are, and keep smacking them out the park. Every argument that she can make for herself - that she's experienced ("at what?", one might ask - "ordering dinner for foreign dignataries?"), that she has sound judgement (no, really, don't go there...), that she's electable (the numbers would beg to differ) can be easily turned away with a smart, fast answer.

The country can hear her now inside saying "I'm melting! I'm melting...."
God bless this guy....hope is in the horizon.
Obama going negative again.

and he believes everything Novak says ... makes you wonder if he's really a republican
This isn't disney world you know. Have you ever asked yourself why republicans and some democrats (e.g Edwards, Obama, Dodd albeit with Edwards being the shrillest) criticise Hillary and Bill Clinton?
HRC has no clue about foreign policy. Wearing a caftan or covering your head during a visit to a Moslem country does not mean you understand anything about their needs. More so, are you willing to listen to the other side of the story even when you have no idea what the other person(country) is all about - HRC is not. All she wants as foreign policy is to dictate what she's given by Madeline (think tired, very tired and alread disproved to work).
Obama on the other hand has fresh ideas on how to reach the world.
Go Obama! Fired Up!!
Not a Hillary fan, BUT: I would wager that people more removed from the President than his wife DOES gain experience by virture of proximity. Look at Cheney - he's been in the WH since Nixon and he was able the BEAT THE CRAP out of the rules, because he new what he could and couldn't get away with. You can't hang around a garage without learning a little about cars, even if you don't want to.

On an additional note - if that's "going negative" I'll settle for it. President Obama would be fine with me.
Chapel Hill, North Carolina – Today, John Edwards for President communications director Chris Kofinis released the following statement on the definition of mudslinging:

"mudslinging |mŭd'slĭng'ing| (also mud-slinging)noun informal the use of insults and accusations, esp. unjust ones, with the aim of damaging the reputation of an opponent. As in: Hillary Clinton said about Barack Obama, 'Now voters will judge whether living in a foreign country at the age of 10 prepares one to face the big, complex international challenges the next president will face.'

"Now we know what Senator Clinton meant when she talked about 'throwing mud' in the last debate. Like so many other things, when it comes to mud, Hillary Clinton says one thing and throws another."
Judgment trumps experience.  Besides, when did First Lady qualify as experience, anyway?  I mean, I guess she knows what kind of fork to use for the salad course during a state dinner, but......
Obama/Webb '08
Dick Cheney as Chief of Staff had job classification and chain of command.  He was in-charge of formulating day to day policies.  First Lady has no job classification. Every President is faced with different sets of challenges that are not predetermined.
Don't mess with President Obama!
Go Go Go Obama! He is absolutely correct. Hob-nobbing with elites from foreign countries does not in any way qualify you to "know" foreign policy.  These same elites are the people that cause goofy leftist revolutions that ultimately threaten our own security (see Venezuela, for example).
Hillary is doomed...she's a liar....she has no stance and she confuses herself on national TV. Obama isn't the answer either. There is one person who IS right on Iraq, that's Democratic Senator Joe Biden. Joe Biden has brought up the fcat that people continue to bring up false choices.
1. more of the same and hope things change for the better.
2. laeve and hope for the best.

...but what Joe Biden says is recognized underneath all of the bickering is that it matters what believe behind. We need a political settlement. His plan is detail here....  www.planforiraq.com

Joe Biden will be our next President.

Joe Biden has a history of uniting people in both parties and will be a Mt. Rushmorian president. Joe Biden will be our next President.
Hillary thinks that being First Lady gives her experience, her experience was a failed Healthcare for all Americans. She is attacking due to fear that Barack and Edwards are gainging on her.She will try anything. Most Americans have seen through this devious woman, and I hope the people in Iowa, New Hampshire and Nevada see this. I urge a vote for Barack!
I trust Obama and think his experience outside the Washington beltway will help him finish off the Bush-Clinton problem years. Clinton is part of the problem; let us clean up the past problems from our national landscape and look forward to an era with a person with vision and hope and who will enable us to challenge and vault us foward to a better future in the new American century  - Go Obama!
Tofun, if you think that is "going negative" than you are thin shkinned, and totally naive.  And if Hillary shares your naivety, there is absolutely no way she can stand up to the republican in the general election, let alone any difficult world leaders.
First Hillary's team leaks innuendo through the conservative media, now she's using the RNC's published play book, almost verbatim, in order to attack Obama. Whose side is Hillary on anyway?
Visiting other countries as First Lady doesn't help you to understand the thoughts of the people.  Most visits are scrubed and white washed-a propaganda tour. I don't think anyone in a presidential party would get the opportunity to talk to real people.  Like China, would let a first lady speak to the burma monks or Taliban women prior to the Afgan invasion.  And I doubt most people in other countries would speak honestly about their condition for fear of retribution after the first lady left the country.  Please Hillary, ribbing cutting is not foriegn policy experience.
Obama said he got it right about Iraq because he lived overseas as a child.

Well, now I'm relieved.  I thought at first that he had almost NO foreign affairs experience.

All Barack ever needed to know about foreign affairs, he apparently learned in Kindergarten.

Great ball of fire...let's just hope he finds an experienced vice preident...wonder if Dick Cheney is available?

I heard Obama was going to pick Courtney Love as his running mate, Lindsay Lohan as his Secretary of State and Britney Spears as the Health & Human Services secretary.  All you Obama supporters are the same recycled Deaniac losers from the last election cycle, looking for another looney liberal loser to cost us the election yet again.  If you succeed in taking down Hillary, I hope you enjoy your victory.  The Republican hate machine is going to tear Obama apart and I'm going to laugh until I cry.  If Hillary gets knocked out, I'm voting for any Republican just to send the pathetic liberal looney losers in this party a message.  Get your head out of the clouds and vote for a realistic candidate.  Hillary's the only one that's got the b-lls to take on the Republicans.  Stop this "We Are the World" crap!
Hillary, if you are going to lodge personal attacks against a person, that said person is compelled to respond.  Why not sell the people on your good points and leave the mud to the Repubs?

What? Not that many good points?  Well, you can always make them up!!!
Wow..another smack down..when will she learn shes in a two legged race..and her legs are too short...Obama just keeps showing what real experience and Judgement are really about..and she just doesn't get it..she will come jan 3rd..Obama 08
I lived in several diffent countries.  Does that make me presidential material.  Go Hillary!
Well said Marcus, TheDonald.....Good man, God bless him.

Oh the frustration her highness must be experiencing at facing such a capable opponent - and what seething envy at having to run against someone who contrasts so starkly with her old politics way.

Change we can truly believe in: Obama '08
The only reason George Bush won Al Gore is because he was too coward to embrace Clinton's 8yrs of moving America forward. The only reason Kerry lost to Bush because he was a flip flopper. Kerry likes to stand on the fence of American issues so he can easily change his position. The only reason Hillary Clinton will lose to the doomest Republican is because she is a flip flopper also. Americans are wise now, it is alot more easier for us to ID a two edge sword ten thousand miles away, and recognize potency of her danger
Quote of the day in response to the decider gwb:

"I can't tell if Bush is endorsing Hillary, hoping she's the nominee, or thanking her for her votes on Iraq and Iran," Obama, D-Ill., spokesperson Bill Burton told ABC News.
Anybody else getting tired of this back-and-forth? I'd bet voterrs in iowa and NH are, too.

Why is Obama bringing up that he was in Kenya when he was 10? Who cares?!
Lee you are wrong and I wil pose the following analogy to prove it:

Visiting a country as a tourist has NOTHING to do with living in that country and engaging people.

When Clinton or congress-people visit foreign countries they are shielded. It's impossible for them to understand the view of the local. LIVING abroad is a whole new experience it helps you gain perspective and understand the culture. The former regurgitates stereotypes the latter smashes them.

The world as it stands, needs more understanding and less stereotyping,
That a boy Obama!!!  Go after Hillary and expose her for  the fraud she is.  I can't wait to hear the words President Obama next year.
ouch He just hit her where it hurts...nothing negative here...she started it with attack on Obama's experince...thus Obama need to respond.
Like a teenager.
I've got nothing against Hillary but do we really need Bush, Clinton, Bush, Clinton?  It would be nice if we could elect a president that 49% of the country doesn't hate.

Obama has consitently shown an ability to hear, sypathize, and touch the people he meets, such as the mothers of soldiers who have died in Iraq.  He is able to understand situations from different points of view and find common ground (watch the video of his talk on religion on his website).  He is smart, and always been on the right side of the war, even against political advice, so he has his own character and stands up for what he believes is right.  He gives of himself to try to improve this country, as can be seen in his work in Chicago, where he realized he could do more good by getting a law degree.  He has been able to reach out to Republicans to find common ground to bring about good changes in Illinois and the federal government.  For foreign experience, he has the backing of many experienced advisors, including some who worked with Bill Clinton, as reported in the New York Times.  They support Obama because he is able to comprehend complex situations, understand them, and find solutions in them, which is needed when navigating in the colorful (not Bush's black and white) world we live in.

Hillary can't even be gracious to her waitresses.
Well, if Hillary Clinton wants to talk about her first lady experience then it is probably fair to ask her why she chose to meet with notorious dictator Robert Mugabe.   This was shortly after his regime had slaughtered 10,000 or more activists in Matabeleland.  What great diplomacy did she accomplish?   According to her book, Mugabe's wife carried on the conversation while he giggled.
Enough said. Mr. Obama is a leader and Mrs. Clinton is a follower.
I love the title "Obama Hits Back"!! Maybe for a pre-schooler this is hitting back. And if this is what he offers in toughness, the republicans are going to have a field day with him. One thing that puzzles me is this: why didn't he answer the charge? Why doesn't he say "this is my foreign policy experience..."? I'll tell you why: he has nothing to offer except: change the subject and attack somewhere else. And you so called reporters give him a pass at every turn while parsing everything Hillary has to say. When are you "reporters" going to get real and start printing some substance on EXACTLY where he DOES stand and not all this fluff that has absolutely nothing to do with his positions?  The entire "First Read" staff should be ashamed of themselves. You're more like Cartoon Network mouthpieces for the Obama campaign than anything even closely resembling a journalist. I hear they're hiring at KidnetTV, but frankly, I don't think you have the qualifications to work there either.
I'm sorry but Obama should not be President. He makes really dumb errors.

I don't how he can have any opinion on votes that he was not in the Senate at the time, much less the Iran vote which he did not bother to show up for.
I sympathize with you Obama supporters. He seems like a nice guy, and we could use a nice, approachable president after 8 years of self-righteous autocracy.

But he's too young, too inexperienced. And "I lived overseas as a child, so I understand foreign policy" is about as ludicrous as "I read Uncle Tom's Cabin so I understand what it means to be Black in America."

Earlier today I saw a news clip where some Jane Q. Public asked Obama in a town meeting what he would do to prevent another 9/11; and rather than answer what was a direct and substantive question, Obama launched into a polemic to the effect that no one could question his patriotism. This is obvious inexperience at work. All politicians are evasive; but experience teaches you polish. This is Nikita Khrushchev, not Vladimir Putin. I could almost see Obama banging his shoe on the dais, thinking drama could replace substance. That may wow them in Sandusky, but it won't play on the world stage, not to other heads of state.

I don't like Hillary; she's a cold, calculating fish. But she's a pro.

Vote Hillary in 2008.
Te HRC claim in foreign policy experience is equivalent of the pundit that get us to Irak. Reading a book about a moslem country or pass by as a tourist means nada and HRC is kidding herself wit this crap. If she was experience as she claim, she wil undeerstand that attacking a moslem country was not the best thing to do if you want to fight efficiently against jihadists. Experience doesn't means being around, but learn to have a judgement and HRC lack miserably judgement or she is machivelic.
Go OBAMA
Obama is sure shot failure for America. He is too green, superflous and arrogant. This is part of Obama's email to those who have registered at this website to know more about him.

See the arrogance in demanding money. I am not a blind supporter, i am researching candidates. And since I have joined, I have got 99% money donation emails. Why?

I am put off by such money begging emails.
Every remark that Clinton has made towards Obama has been sophmoric and transparent. Like George Bush, she is so arrogant she thinks the American people dont get it.
HRC was the Treasury Secretary, Secretary of State, Secretary of Defense, Secretary of the Interior, National Security Advisor, etc., in the Clinton administration... right?  I mean where else could she have gotten all of this "applied" experience she's touting in the areas of the economy, environment, national security, etc. (I concede education because HRC has been a child and educational advocate for years)?  Funny, if memory serves, the one area officially appointed to and controlled by HRC during the Clinton presidency was the healthcare issue and that was a disastorous failure.  Is anyone else aware of some recess appointment or shadow position in the administration HRC held and if so, then she should disclose that information and be given proper credit or criticism for her performance during that tenure.  Until then, will someone please explain why we're supposed to believe that 8 years of being a "First Lady" somehow allowed HRC to vicariously hold every major cabinet position in the Clinton administration?  Give HRC due credit and respect for her years in the Senate and judge her accordingly on her votes and stated positions, but it insults the intelligence of anyone who can hear to suggest that she is somehow battle-tested and more experienced than others just because she lived in the White House and advised her spouse... like most spouses do everyday, everywhere.
Go Barack!!  Love this man.  'outside the box' thinker.  We need that at this time.  Edwards, too! Has it 'spot on' that lobbyists and special interests have too much clout on capitol hill.  Clinton would just preserve the 'status quo', I for one want things to change!
Obama/Edwards...that's the ticket for me!!
dont really care what HRC says about her foreign policy experience, but the truth is that the white house needs an 'unorthodox' politician to do damage control.not another Clinton or Bush.Good luck OBAMA!!
Why is it that when people critisize HRC on her record or substantive issues or fight back at her "swiftboating" its going negative?

But when HRC goes negative its "strength and experience"?
The story of Clinton and Obama, is like a childs game. When a child steals a candy , and daddy comes past and yells , ' Who took the candy? ' the child points immediatly the next child and says ' Its not me daddy , thats him'. Obama, knows he a few days more to come out of limelight. So its time to get dirty .Loosers always behave this way. History claims that.
George W Bush has ENDORSED Hillary Rodham Clinton for President. That is kind of odd while very intesreting knowing well the distaste that people have for GW in the democratic party and accross the country.

This will certainly have further damaging impact on our dear senator from NY.
