Obama hits back on foreign policy

Posted: Tuesday, November 20, 2007 7:15 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ's Aswini Anburajan
CONWAY, NH-- In response to Clinton’s dig at his foreign policy credentials (and a similar shot by the RNC), Obama struck back.

"We just had a little exchange, Sen. Clinton and myself today,” Obama told voters here. “I had mentioned that one of the reasons that I got it right when it came to Iraq was because I had lived overseas as a child. It gives me some judgment and perspective around what other people think about America and how they might react or respond when we make some of the decisions that we make.

“And, of course, both the Republicans in their talking points as well as Sen. Clinton said we don't think that what Sen. Obama did when he was 10 years old is relevant to our national security. I didn't say that. She went on to make up the point, that some of the Republicans have made that she's met with all these world leaders. I was wondering which world leader told her that we needed to invade Iraq because that is the conventional thinking that we're going to have to break."

The flurry of comments and responses are indicative of a campaign that has heated up with less than 45 days to go before the first nominating contest in Iowa. Obama, who has usually shied away from attacking Clinton on the stump, now appears ready and willing to engage, calling her out on her record routinely in town halls.

He also criticized her shift on NAFTA today at a town hall in Alton, Iowa, saying that she had praised NAFTA just one year ago. Obama questioned Clinton's commitment to bring real change to Washington, because she had changed her positions on the trade bill.

"When somebody has a different response now then they did a year before or two years before or five years before,” Obama said, “then you can't count on them fighting for what they say they’re going to fight for now.”

I think Obama should be careful with this. I believe some world leaders probably DID tell Hillary Clinton we needed to invade Iraq.  She's on the Senate Armed Services committee.
I like Obama but I think what he said about living overseas is actually a little naive.  I've lived overseas and it definitely expands your worldview.  But that experience would be no different from anyone who has travelled extensively.  Making history, as in living in the WH for 8 years as an adult, has got to equal living in Indonesia for 4 years as a kid, ya think?
I think Obama has a grandiose image of imself and his experience that comes out with comments like the one he made about his being 10 years old -yes he would help him with perspective but he has zilch experience about foeign policy- he's a charmer all right- but so was Bush II- I don't want to have another person in the job of president, so ill prepared. No matter how clever he may be. Gayle
4 years overseas, ages 6-10!

WHOPPEEEEEEEEEE! he has experience!
people will so impressed.

It's a great advertizement for your ,er, your, er. depth of experience.  yeah, right ages 6-19, 1967-71.

I think Obama's fatal flaw is that he has a grandiose image of himself, and his capabilities - yes he is a charmer all right but a neophyte with respect to experience and foreign policy - we already have had 7 years of a president who was a charmer with a grandiose imagage of himself and capabilities - we need a president with stature and strngth and smarts and depth of experience like Hillary Clinton.
Obama is a inexperienced politician, he admitted to taking drugs, alcohol abuse and being lazy.
Who needs another W in our WH? We have been destroyed by the one Obama emulates....brain damaged Bush!
Obama is coasting to defeat, what a loser!  I did not want to hang with druggies when I was in school and I certainly do not want one for president.  How the hell did he get to the senate? Is he fighting the "war" on drugs? He is a lie, what is honest about being dishonest? He has no credibility with the American people. How dare he dis Hillary! He has a heavy load of baggage, call a porter Obama, you need help. What a role model for your children, you sure lead by example.  A bad one.
Let us point out that Obama does have More experience with DRUGS!  Hillary sure has to give him credit where credit is due. I can not wait for O to legalize drugs when he is president. Go Obama, I need a fix!
Not a Hillary fan either, but do people realize Obama and Hillary are exactly the same the have the same position on Iraq and Iran sorry I can't support a pro-war democrat who voted for the patriot act and the corporate bankrupt reform, to favor corporations not average americans.. Obama is a liar he takes money from lobbyists and supported Bush's sanctions against Iran
Again,
How on earth can SHE be the one talking about someone elses forign policy experience? This will end up as an opening I presume.
For him to come out with "We just had a little exchange, Sen. Clinton and myself today....[cry, cry, cry]"...does he get any more boring. By worrying about her response is giving it credibility.
Two of my daughters were born over-seas, and with the
older sister spent five years in other countries and
traveling around the world. Though they were young
this 'experience' has given them a wondrous view of
the world, a respect for other cultures, and multiple
dimensions of caring for people everywhere.
Amen re Barack Obama. His loving, willing to talk,
hear, share ideas is what we need. Bush doesn't know
a tick about international relations.....and see where
we are! Hillary will want it all "her way" ....and
that is not international diplomacy.
Amen and Allelujah ...may Obama sit behind the President's desk for years and we shall see great
changes in ever so many things.
Ann Bittick/Washington, AR
1. Obama CURRENTLY serves on the "Senate Foreign Relations Committee",

2. He opposed Iraq War when Hillary, Biden and Dodd supported it and gave the authorization for it.
3. Hillary recently supported what some say are a run up toward War with Iran.
4. Obama meant that living abroad (Outside the US) has enabled him to broaden his thinking when it comes to dealing with other countries.
5. Any Candidates that supported the Iraq War maybe should have stayed in Indonesia at age 10 also. Then we would not have lost 4,000 U.S. Soldiers lives and thousands injured.
6. For Hillary to argue she was first lady and traveled to other Countries makes her good at foreign policy. Her record of it (Iraq & Iran vote) speaks different. After all many folks attend high school/college and have the worst JUDGEMENT.
Which Obama struck back at Clinton?

I am sure Axlerod is carefully scripting how and when Obama lets his pre-Harvard past come out.

Obama's image is at stake.

Barack Obama, the brilliant African American candidate with a spotless reputation.  A citizen of the highest standing.

Or

Barry Obama, who back in his New York City days was a slacker who smoked weed and did blow, while dating white girls and getting mediocre grades gets out there in circulation.

Obama is such a fake.
This country is in a hot "Mess", later for the crap! If we are not careful and the electorial college picks the wrong "President" to represent this country we will be in a "Mess". No more games! Obama or Clinton it's time to make the hard decisions... we want to win whether we like Hilliary or Obaman...Hillary is probably the best "Wo...man" to do the job... Step to the side "Dad" give "Momma C" a chance!...  My money is on "Momma" C ... go mama... go mama... Handle The Business. "We All Have To Eat". Get It Together "Girls and Boys"... cute just doesn't cut it! Not Now... We'll Have To Play The Cute Card Later! The Not So Cute, People Just Might Have To Run The Country For Now! Buck-up Accept It! It's Not A Beauty Pageant!
Obama is the one who's turning this campaign into an ugly affair between Democrats by using 1990's Neo-Con tactics....mostly because he's LOSING.
Hillary's right, whatever Obama did when he was 10 is irrelevant to world politics, it doesn't constitute "experience."
Furthermore, The American People gave the republiCANTs a majority in The Senate, and a larger Majority than they already had in The House, two weeks AFTER the vote to authorize force in Iraq was taken. They also re-elected Bush and the "repukes" in 2004 when they all ran on fighting and winning the war in Iraq.
Things have changed since.
But, it was clearly what Americans wanted at THAT time.
Obama just doesn't get it.
It's no wonder he wants to give driver's licenses to illegal aliens. He learned to hate this country when he was growing up overseas, and doesn't give a damn about securing our borders. He's more worried about the rights of people OUTSIDE the UNited States, than he is about our own people.
But then again, what would you expect from a guy who refuses to wear an American Flag on his lapel, and who disrespects the National Anthem.
A "JEOPARDY" question:

“I’m not running to be president of the Democrats. I’m not running to be president of states that vote for Democrats. I’m running to be president of the United States. And I think I understand very well what it would take to do that.”

the answer. I know every one rushed to hit the button and said "Who is Barack Obama" and that is WRONG.

The answer is Hillary, the queen of plagiarism and no original ideas talking in Iowa cleverly replacing BLUE STATES by "states that vote for democrats".

When will Hillary stop copying peoples speeches, ideas and even votes and show some authentic thinking?
We are waiting.
www.barackobama.com
Why did Obama have a speech the other day on his past drug use ? Something is fishey here, it just dosen't smell right. Is he "hiding" something?
If this dirty lady wants to fight fire with fire, she's going to get a smack in the face. She deserved this, that downright dirty Democrat.
I wouldn't vote for Barrack Obama if he were running for Dog Catcher!
Lots of noise, no experience, can't give a simple "yes," or "no" answer when he's asked for one.
My first thoughts were to vote for The Democratic Party's presidential candidate in 2008, because of my dissatisfation with what's going on in my own party.
But, if this guy gets the nomination I'll stick to my G.O.P.
Maybe Obama should come out and say "I also played a lot of the board game Risk as a child. That, too, has made me better prepared to deal with foreign relations."
This is a brilliant response to the Clinton's talking head. I am loving it ...Clinton want to have it both ways but she sound pathetic whenever she question Obama's foreign policy experience.

You can sense the desperation from the Clinton’s camp. They are so way behind in the game. Her experience meeting the world leaders as a first lady underscore her vote for Iraq war. Hillary is so out of torch with reality
OBAMA, OBAMA, OBAMA, 08,08,08!!!! WE NEED CHANGE IN LEADERSHIP AND DIRECTION PLEASE AMERICA WE NEED CHANGE IF NOT YESTERDAY SOONER!!!!
Recent poll says 68% of Democrats believe Hillary is more experienced than Obama in areas such as foreign policy.
Hillary Clinton will take third in Iowa and it's downhill from there.  Her negativity is a hallmark symbol of the desperation within her campaign as they see her "inevitability" slip away.

America rejects the same old politics of misrepresentation that motivates Mark Penn and Howard Wolfson, who are in this to win at any cost, even if it means selling the American public a candidate who can't win the general election and who is not the best choice for us at this time.

Barack Obama-  It's his time.  Given the news this week about lies from Bush, Cheney, et. al., wouldn't we benefit from honesty in our president?  It's time to take back our country and put someone in charge who we can trust to wake up each day with our best interests as his priority.
Chuck, Mark, and Dom. Thanks for the Moderations and all the other stuff(ing). Have a great Turkey Day (as if you didn't get enough Turkeys in D.C.) Thanks again.
Tofun:

For the millionth time, this in NOT Obama going negative!

Attacking someone's character is going negative...
Attacking someone's family is going negative...
Knowingly telling half-truths about someone is going negative...

Telling America that Hillary's vote for the war shows a lack of jugdement is NOT going negative...
Pointing out her hypocrisy on illigal immigrant drivers licenses is NOT going negative...
Pointing out her "Win-at-any-cost", "Karl-Rove" brand of politics is NOT going negative...

Obama is respectfully drawing distinctions between the candidates...

And that's refreshing!!

Obama '08!!
I would like to know what type of exchange did Hillary Clinton have when meeting with World Leaders and what was their opinion of her?, I don't hear anything from her on this...At this point trusting a candidate to do what they say is important to me. You know Hillary fully knows the backround Obama has in foreign relations and other committee's:

Barack serves on the Committee on Homeland Security and Government Affairs, the Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions, the Committee on Veterans' Affairs, and the Committee on Foreign Relations, where he is Chairman of the Subcommittee on European Affairs. http://www.barackobama.com/issues/strengtheningamerica/

Since when is going negative out of the realm of politics? I tell you this though, both need to stop Bush bashing because he is not running. They need to be bashing each other, that will separate them. I don't understand why HRC  doesn't just straight up defend her actions instead of always referring to the Bush administration. This is why she is ridiculed by Republicans.
Barack has obtained enough foreign policy experience in the Senate, and he has shown wisdom in his foreign policy decision making--bucking the conventional wisdom of old that aren't working for common sense.  I don't think that he is claiming foreign policy experience from when he was 10, but he is saying that living abroad in real communities abroad offers himself perspective, which in turn guides his judgement.

Hmmm, if Hillary has the experience to get the job done wrong, maybe Barack has the inexperience to get the job done right?

With all due respect I find it very difficult to believe that what Obama did overseas when he was between the ages of 6-10 years old. Truly has any effect over this ability to lead today. He was much too young for any of his experiences to have any significant impact on leading a country.
Obama twists what he said.  He said he got it right on the Iraq war because he lived overseas as a child.  HOW STUPID, HOW IMMATURE.

All Obama needed to know about foreign policy he learned in Kindergarten overseas????? And you want to put your trust in this man for president?

And when Professor Holier Than Thou gets caught for such a junior high comment, her turns around and attacks Hillary.

And many of you Obama supporters blindly ignore his lack of experience especially when he makes immature comments.  WHY?

Can we really afford to have such an inexperienced immature president.

Hello...President Rudy.
This is a beautiful piece on the value of spending part of your childhood in another country.

http://www.dailykos.com/story/2007/11/20/21350/887

A must read for all.
I trust Obama's judgment in surrounding himself with the best people available in his administration. NOT CRONIES AND FRIENDS. You may even see a republican or two. OBAMA '08!!
This feels like 2000 all over again.  We had a bright candidate running for president..Al Gore...who the press hounded to death and vilified at every turn. Sound familiar? In hindsight would you have voted for Bush again? Crackpot Chris Matthews went wild questioning everything from Gore's three button suits to his manhood...real issues.  Sound familiar? For years Matthews hammered away at Gore..made up lies or at least twistsed what Gore said.  Sound familiar?Matthews kept ignoring all the silly immature things George Bush said and the media did not question his judgement, experience, or ability to lead. Sound familiar?

Crackpot Matthews and the media ignored the intelligence of Gore and instead focused on how fun and likeable Bush was.  Matthews continually said on Hardball how much George was a man's man, so likeable and just the kind of guy you'd like to go have a beer with.

In hindsight...with the war and everything else...who would have been the better president...likeable inexperienced, fun George or intelligent, thoughtful, mature Al.

Although Crackpot Matthews who would NEVER admit his part in helping to get George Bush elected by continually making funn of anything Al Gore did, is NOW upset with George.

Where was Matthews judgement and also the American people who allow  multimillionaire news media to vilify, pick on, and pile on one candidate for stuff like their clothes, mannerisms and other NON ISSUES.

Didn't we learn anything from the disaster in 2000?
Here we go again and with Crackpot Chris Matthews again leading the pack on things that don't matter when picking a president.  His nightly rant against Hillary Clinton is sad.  He doesn't have to like her or vote for her, but what happened to mature, fair, unbiased news coverage?

American people, do we really want a man like Matthews who has a failed record with poor judgement, as in George Bush, swaying our decision for something so important as the president of the USA.  So what if Crackpot Chris doesn't like their laugh or their clothes or their mannerisms.  So what if Matthews is insanely jealous of Bill Clinton.

Please make up your own mind on the basis of issues not some crackpot thing the media tells us. That's how we got George Bush.
Restoring America's credibility overseas is critical for the future and Barack Obama is the one who can do it effectively, as opposed to Hillary Clinton, because he carries no baggage as a Washington insider.
Sam,

I'm sorry you can't understand the point he was making in your simple "black and white" mind. He wasn't saying he got it right only because he lived overseas as a child. He was saying that the added perspective of living overseas played a part understanding the consequences of our actions. Stop twisting what he says and let him speak for himself.
HOW ABOUT A DRUG TEST FOR "ALL" THE PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATES ? WHAT DO YOU THINK OBAMA ?
Recent poll says 68% of Democrats believe Hillary is more experienced than Obama in areas such as foreign policy.
pat huntington ny (Sent Wednesday, November 21, 2007 9:51 AM)

Pat, perception and reality are two different things.  Polls reflect perception, not reality.  Yes, I will concede that perception means everything in politics, and that is what H.R. Clinton is running on, which is what one has to do.  In my opinion, they are both equally qualified based on experience, they just have different types but one is not better than the other.  In baseball the tie goes to the runner, or in politics I give the tie to the person who is going to try to change/fix our current foreign policy.
One part is true:  she has the experience of negative mudslinging, lying, cheating, swindling, making the facts fit into her own reality, machiavellianism, ends justifying the means, being a sell out to unions by making false promises to get endorsements, such as the teachers union, and universal health care without any concrete way of paying for any of her pie in the sky plans....she reminds me of some other crooked lying, b&*(@ard Dubya who is still grinding this country in the ground with wasteful ethanol, more wars, faith based intitiatives that are not based in reality such as abstinence when STDs are now at all time high DIRECTLY because of his policies, gas and energy all time high DIRECTLY because of his policies, grad rates ALL TIME lOW because of his silly NCLB which no self respectful teacher supports....but all George's learning dun him a lot a good he is prez aint he???thas wut experyunce all abut rait?
Mike Frazer, you got that right.  I'm with you.  A person may not like everything about Hillary but in the end SHE IS A PRO and Mr. Obama just keeps exposing his lack of experience.

I'm voting for Hillary also

I'm voting for change...change from the lack of experience of the Bush administration to the profesional experience of Hillary.
Jeff,
If Obama says something silly like he got foreign policy experience as a kid overseas...whether he actually meant something else...as president he's going to get the USA in a heap of trouble...because other countries are going to think in black and white
and he better think about all the effects of what he says.
If your black and white comment suggests that I am racist...shame of you.  You don't know the color of my skin  and what difference does it make what color I am.  I should not be voting for Obama because we have the same skin color.
I will vote on the basis of the most intelligent, EXPERIENCED person.

I was an Obama fan...no more...he's too scary.
Joe Bindon might be our best hope but he will not get nominated.  Obamma is someone to look seriously at for nomination.  Hillary could not figure out a health plan for us and that is one big job, but now she seems  more certain tht she can.  Health care is very important but not as much as staking our very safey and our lives on how things are handled in the middle wast.  I want ot be one of the good guys again.  God Bless America and let us lern to live in peace.
I read this morning that Obama has gained 10 points on Clinton in the new national poll. Here he comes...and there she goes. I am an Independent recently turned Democrat, just so I can vote in the primary on Feb 2. It is between Biden and Obama for me. Clinton has proven to me that she can't be trusted. If Biden is competitive in January, he may get my vote....otherwise, it's Obama.
Tim New York, NY:  Sweety its not "We are the world crap" as you like to call it, its trying to learn from mistakes and get our country out of this rut we have been in for 8+ years.  When a pubs and dems bicker and fight and hate each other absolutely nothing gets done. Obama has cosponsored bills with pubs and dems, he is well like by veteren repub senators and dem senators.  I'm tired of nothing getting done in Washington, and i'm sure i'm not the only one.  I like Hillary I LOVED Bill and i won't say anything bad about either one of them but they are hated by many in washington as well as citizens across the USA. Everything will be a battle of Dems vs. Pubs if Hil is elected and once again nothing will get done.  Our domestic and foreign policies are in shambles after W, I think we neeed a fresh approach to get things on the right track.  I think Obama is very inteligent, honest and sincere and the more i read about him and the more i hear him speak the more i like him.
Pure and simple, Obama lied.  And its a whopper.  Says he didn't say that living in Indonesia from ages 6 to 10 was relevant foreign policy experience. Well, yes he did.  His exact quote--reported right here yesterday--was: "Probably the strongest experience I have in foreign relations is the fact I spent four years overseas when I was a child in Southeast Asia."  Liar, Liar, pants on fire.  But of course the media won't call him on it, because it doesn't fit the narrative
Obama is dropping like a stone in Rasmussen's daily tracking poll.  A 4 point tank yesterday.  3 more today.   That tell me that starting this weekend voters looked at him and saw something they didn't like.

It could be the effects of the debate sinking in, and also his over reaction to Bob Novak.
Is it time to vote yet???? GO OBAMA GO!! Obama'08!!!
Anyone who is complaining about mudslinging should just get over it! This is the nature of politics. Any distinction that a canidate makes is automatically termed as "mudslinging" Well in case you haven't followed an election before let me inform you that Republicans won't take it easy on Hilary or Barack so they should hold no punches back as long as they are warrented. Also Democrats must remember that we have to support the democratic nominee i don't care if its Barack, Clinton, Edwards it doesn't matter because any of our candidates will be better than the republicans!
I do not feel the least bit secure that Obama is capable of running this Nation. He is after all young and living abroad when you are 10 doesn't prepare you to make decisions pertaining to the foriegn policies of a country. I would like to see a strong, inteligent woman as President, so would many of my friends and family. Realistically Hilary couldn't even manage to keep her husband from embarrassing her, himself and this country with his roaming, how can she manage to run our Nation. It was unintelligent for people to elect her to the Senate; do we really need to compound our mistake by letting her become President. Let's give an idealist young man a chance.  After all wasn't this country founded by idealistic young men?
For you people who say you were a fan of one candidate (no matter who it is), but then say you can no longer support that candidate because of some stupid reason perpetuated by the media, SHUT UP!!!

You are obviously not following along close enough if you waffle between candidates so easily, much like "Sam".
