Grandpa Mitt... for the 11th time

Posted: Wednesday, November 21, 2007 2:01 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ's Erin McPike
HIAWATHA, Iowa -- Continuing his two-day swing through Iowa this morning, Romney announced that it's a special day for him because his son, Matt, and his daughter-in-law, Laurie, are due to give birth to a boy this afternoon. This will be Romney's 11th grandchild and Matt and Laurie's fourth child, and he gave the news before packing up some groceries for a Thanksgiving donation.

Romney ended his trip by grocery shopping at a HY-VEE grocery store in Iowa City and dropped off the goods at the Hawkeye Area Community Action Center in a suburb of Cedar Rapids. He weaved through the aisles of the store picking up an assortment of non-perishable food items and stacked them neatly and methodically into the cart -- in much the same way he takes care of his schedule and treats his campaign.

"Where's the Captain when you need him most?" Romney asked aloud of the cereal Captain Crunch. "There he is," he said, adding two regular and two peanut butter boxes into his cart. In addition to many more boxes of cereal (including plenty of Frosted Flakes -- "You can never have too many Frosted Flakes," and Froot Loops -- "Everybody loves Froot Loops"), he piled jars of apple sauce, cans of Tuna, boxes of Stove Top and several containers of maple syrup -- both regular and light.

Reporters asked him if he was going to get anything to go along with the syrup, and he finally picked up three boxes of Hungry Jack pancake mix as his last few items after all the prodding. He also got several jars of JIF peanut butter and said a couple of times that he wanted to get things he liked.

The total of his contribution came to $204.17.

While packing up the food after paying, Romney also sang "Over the River and through the Woods" and "We Gather Together."

At least they are rich and can afford the kids.

We need a new class of GREAT AMERICAN HERO - the "BETTER THINGS TO DO" FEARLESS Chicken hawk, ready, willing and able serve his country at a moment's notice to recite jingonistic platiudes, e.g., "Support the Troops," "If 'We' don't fight them there, 'we' will have to fight them here", and the ever-popular, "If you don't support the war, you hate America."

After all, not just anyone can stand to be a craven coward AND loud and proud about it.

It should come with a medal: a yacht hanging from a chicken bone by a rainbow ribbon (CHEAP SHOT! LOT'S OF GAYS HAVE HAD THE GUTS TO GO TO WAR FOR THEIR COUNTRY) - a yellow ribbon.
Jeez, how about encouraging healthy eating habits instead of that highly-processed chemical-laden crap?
Did Romney cut a deal with Kellogg's for campaign donations?
wow, you make a story about buying food and donating it all seem so mean and bitter.........

the guy knows his way around a supermarket, too....and you KNOW his mind was ticking off the prices....wonder when was the last time Chillary was food shopping???
I would never vote for the "Mitt Romney" running right now, maybe the earlier version. Whom I kidding I will vote for the Democratic nominee as I always have. It was nice of Romney to donate to  HACAP. Don't really understand why he shopped in Iowa City to donate in Cedar Rapids 23 miles away (assuming you had the two locations right). Not only do we have more Hy-Vee's in CR ( and a couple other grocery chains) than IC, he could have purchased more groceries in CR for the same amount of money. Iowa City is Iowa's most expensive city.

Even though I don't want you to win the general, and will do all I can to prevent it if you're the nominee, congratulations on the baby, and I hope it's healthy.
Smart man he made sure to buy Iowa products. Captain crunch is made in Cedar Rapids Iowa at the worlds largest cereal mill.
Romney campaigned on creating a larger military(boots on the ground) and more money to build up the pentagaon.Adraft?Higher taxes for the little people?Course he and his large family would be exempt---they will help run the country further into the ditch.Romney is a clone of George W Bush----never again, never again. He can flip flop his way out townor back to serving as a deacon again.I know he spent a lot of his own money but so what he can afford it.
Tofun and Lee:

Woodrow Wilson-  did not serve
Franklin Delano Roosevelt-  did not serve

Two biggest wars of the 20th century for the U.S. so I guess it follows, based on your logic, that they were two of the biggest chickenhawks of the 20th century. No military service, big wars.

Warren Harding- no service, no war.
Herbert Hoover- no service, no war.

Harry Truman served and he took us into a big war.

Dwight Eisenhower served but didn't take us into war.

JFK served and started us toward war.

Lyndon Johnson's service record is similar to George W. Bush's.  He made Kennedy's small war into a big war.

Richard Nixon served and did not take us into war and ended the one he inherited.

Ronald Reagan served and did not take us into war.  Well, go ahead and count Grenada if you want.

George H. W. Bush served and took us into a little war.

Bill Clinton did not serve and took us into a little war and used the military more than Ronald Reagan.

George W. Bush served and took us into two small wars.

There is a pattern there if you'll look for it.

(I'm glad Roosevelt was a chickenhawk, by the way)

Democrat chickenhawks in the last hundred years- 3
Republican chickenhawks in the last hundred yrs- 0

Big Wars-  Democrats 4, Republicans 0
Military deaths- Democrats 618,000
Military deaths- Republicans - less than 5,000.

Dumb argument, huh? I didn't see any other way to respond.  Fire with fire, that kind of thing.

Time to give up chickenhawks for turkey.  Happy Thanksgiving
Mitt Romney is  one of the smartest business men around today.  I think that it is time to have a man like him making our economic choices.  A year from now the economy will be issue #1.  Think it through people.  For those complaining about his children not being in the military.  Last time I checked our military was voluntary.  I've known many great Americans that have never worn a uniform.  There are many other ways to support our troops without becomming one.
Mitt Romney is a WONDERFUL man and Presidential candidate.  Not only does he continue to donate to various causes, he will not be collecting a salary as President -- just as he NEVER DREW A SALARY when he was the Governor of Massachusetts.  What other candidate is doing the same? – and they are all wealthier than most Americans.
Romney does not need to deny himself a salary, no one expects it, he chooses to. I am so impressed with this alone that I salute him.

I'm sure some of you liberals will find something negative to say about this too.  Jealous!
Don't elect another flip-flopping LIBERAL from Mass.

just wait for the comercials. how about a debate between the old democrat romney and the new republican romney.
You people turn my stomach. Who do you remind me of???

"Crucify Him! Crucify Him!"
Calling good evil and evil good.

Romney is the best thing that could happen to this country.
At first I thought that this was another non-story but there is so much symbolism that I just had to post my thoughts, Captain Cruch, 'Captain of the ship' Captain Crunch as I remember has a sweet plastic like coating, MITT as the PLASTIC CANDIDATE, fruit loops, too easy, Tiger, strong animal, peanut butter Captain Crunch, southern strategy. I want to know if it was REAL maple syrup or corn syrup though because if it was corn, Iowa, and if it was real sap from a tree, then north east voters go for the home town boy. It was strange though that he would miss the pancake/syrup connection but that could be another symbol, all icing and no cake!
Richard. Better recrunch your numbers. Half the dead on the Big Black Wall are from Nixon, baby. He could have pulled us out the day after he was elected, but he was in the bag. The MilIndusComp Bag. And Roosevelt was a cripple. As for me? IICorps 68-69
OMG,

do you honestly want to compare romney to Jesus Christ?" crucify him" your words tell much as to the apparent teachings that you follow if you do make that analogy.

this is sort of crazy. he is just a man such as any other and I do not see you shedding tears for any other candidate  getting trashed on these boards. do the research. romney made his money(also old family money) by buying companies and laying off workers. he did not actually produce anything. I am suspicious of any one that can buy the presidency for himself.
lynn. It's the GOP's newest thing. "Sanctified Leadership". Dubya was the first President, according to them, to have a hotline to "Him". They said it so many times, he even believes it. Ah, men.
Lynn,
my only point is that this is a good man and it seems people have to stretch a very long way to find things to criticize him about. My intention  was not to elevate Mitt to Jesus Christ level for we know no mortal man can fill our Saviors role. Only that I can not believe how twisted every word & motive, not only of he and his character, but that of the Church of Jesus Christ of Later-day Saints. Truly not understanding how someone with his character and successes can be falsely understood.
Downing someone for going into faltering businesses and turning them around requires cleaning house. But at the same time building them creating more jobs. Otherwise these business go bankrupt and then where does that leave the workers? Do you have any idea how may bring home a pay check with his name on it? The fact that he is using his own money to fight to make a difference  for our country and refusing to except a salary if elected speaks volumes more of him. He does not want elevated to power, rather, he wants to serve freely. Mitt is not perfect. Has he made mistakes? Sure. He is merely a man, but he a is a good good man!
TS Beavercreek, Oh You have got to be kidding, it is east to find criticism with Mitt Romney, the guy is a phoney. No doubt he is a good husband and loving father, but look at his positions, h's taken every side of an issue.
It's easy to refuse a salary when you do not need it. several Presidents have done so and others were only too glad that the job came with a decent salary. Not as much as it should mind you but enough to eat etc. Romney will never need it. He made enough money to last him several lifetimes. His connections got him into some good situations and his ability did the rest.
You hail men with no moral ethics, cheats on their wife repeatedly, lies under oath, and strokes the fur of our countries biggest enemies thinking they will then play nice. And then you say, "well, their personal life has nothing to do with their public life."
Wrong
True and enduring change and lasting success starts at home. If he were a phoney, he could easily pull off what he does in the public, but its what he has at home that testifies to me that he is infact the real deal. He walks the walk. It's how you treat those within the walls of your own home where the test is.
Go Romney.
ts wow! better be careful there, referring to Romney as the Christ. Besides, WHO is saying 'crucify' him? talk about a martyr complex. this is politics, not Sunday morning socializing.

IF ROMNEY CAN'T STAND THE HEAT--GET OFF THE STUMP!!
If he gets mad and starts to walk out of a mere radio station, WHY should I trust him to keep his cool and that flash temper with foreign governments and a world war on terror??? no.

"INvesting" in a faltering company, getting it back on its feet, IS NOT the same thing as FORCED BUY OUTS WHEN A LARGE FIRM GOES AFTER A HOME-GROWN COMPANY AND BEGINS BUYING UP THEIR STOCK, FORCING THE PRICE DOWN, BUYING UP MAJORITY HOLDINGS, JUST TO SELL THAT COMPANY AT A SWEET PROFIT!! employees be damned.
Don't kid yourself. These people have no problem sleeping at night.

This man doesn't need a salary, he's out to buy more POWWWWERRRR, the highest seat in the land.
He 'donated' HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS to HUGE "conservative groups" and now uses them for his 'conservative' references. WHERE was all the hoopla? the TV cameras then??? WHY NO HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS, OR EVEN ONE THOUSAND TO FEED THE HUNGRY, NO. ONLY $200--AND DON'T FORGET THE CHANGE!!
AND MAKE A MEDIA SPECKACLE OUT OF THAT!! what a jerk!

who cares if Hillary goes to the grocery store. she is campaigning for president of the United States. whether or not she shops for groceries is so LOW on the list of PRESIDENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS.

Romney's 'business' abilities did NOT benefit Massachusetts! read the reports.

ts what do you know about the Romney family home life? how much time have you spent with this family to know their home life? How much do you know about being a "political" family?
