Obama open to limited legalization

From NBC/NJ’s Aswini Anburajan
OBAMA WEEKEND CAMPAIGN NOTEBOOK
AUDUBON, IA -- Obama can't seem to escape the smoke of his youthful indiscretions wafting after him on the campaign trail. Just four days after he told a group of high school students that he had experimented with drugs in high school, Obama had to admit to it again at a town hall here.

When a voter asked Obama if he was for the legalization of medical marijuana, Obama said that he wasn't in favor of legalization without scientific evidence and tight controls. Citing his mother who died from cancer young, Obama compared marijuana to morphine saying there was little difference between the two.

"My attitude is if the science and the doctors suggest that the best palliative care and the way to relieve pain and suffering is medical marijuana then that's something I'm open to because there's no difference between that and morphine when it comes to just giving people relief from pain,” Obama said. “But I want to do it under strict guidelines. I want it prescribed in the same way that other painkillers or palliative drugs are prescribed.”

But he added that he was concerned that the reasons for the use of marijuana would grow and create a "slippery slope."

"I was feeling really tense, so I needed a joint," Obama joked with the crowd of those who might try and undermine that type of system.

The question was followed up by another voter asking him, "Unlike other presidents, did you inhale?"

"I did," Obama said to loud applause and laughter. "It's not something that I'm proud of. It was a mistake … But you know, I'm not going to.  I never understood that line. The point was to inhale. That was the point."

Bongs in the Oval Office! Bill will be so happy when he visits.
Firstread's headline is misleading here; Obama doesn't compare morphine to marijuana in terms of potency (something only a far right propagandist or ignorant fool would do), but rather he compares the absolute right of a suffering patient to receive it, which is absolutely dead on.

Obama is pro-medical marijuana, it's good to hear (as anyone with a conscience would be), but he also notes that it could possibly lead down a slope to broader legalization in the future.  I think this is the right step-by-step approach; although marijuana should be legalized and regulated, freeing up law enforcement resources for real drugs and ultimately getting less pot into the hands of children, that issue is secondary to getting relief to thousands of patients of AIDS, cancer, and other debilating diseases, who have no equivalent form of comfort and relief.
Perhaps the leading runners in this the latest presidential race, are realizing the importance of the pot-smoking demographic, with the primary's only a scant few weeks away?

In the US, numbers run into millions of people, who use pot every single day for one reason or another. It would seem to be "good business" then, to try to bring this tough to reach group onside!

Of course Ron Paul realized this over 6 months ago so Obama still has some ground to make up.

He is for further investigation into something that might aid in easing the suffering of others. He wants the analysis and possibly, if all evidence points to medicinal value, the distribution regulated. Why is this crazy?
PS - Much the nation got tanked off of, medicinal I guess, lager and whiskey whilst watching football this weekend (including myself). He just said that he tried drugs when he was younger and it was a bad idea. What is so wrong with that? People need to come down off their high horses, you could hurt yourself with a fall from up there.
i love the line of 'that was the point'.
if the republicans want to make an issue of Obama experimenting as a youth in high school then, they need to answer about Georgie and his cocaine as an adult.  It's basically a non issue and a nonstarter for the repubicans with what George was doing at 30 - sniff - compared to Obama at 30 - who was president of the Harvard law review.
How nice to make such an admission! He certainly won't be confused what the meaning of is is when he occupys the WH!
Obama is playing the political game. I do not trust this man and know from other readings that he is not qualified to make decisions on medical anything for he is only a lowly politician not a doctor. Obama quit now and forever hold your peace. In otherwords shutup and go away, we've heard enough lieing already. Vote for truth vote Ron Paul.
Most of the country supports medical marijuana. If anything, Obama was cautious and even, dare I say it, candidate-like in his answer. We trust doctors to prescribe amphetimines for something like 6 million kids - drugs that limit their physical growth and offer a truly scary list of potential side-effects, all in the name of getting kids to concentrate better in class. But we don't trust doctors to prescribe marijuana to the terminally ill?
Sen. Obama is winning my support daily. He is a honest man.  When I constrast Sen. Obama's answer to the bull Bill Clinton said about his drug use I respect Sen. Obama more and more.  After Bill Clinton told that disgraceful lie about not inhaling, American still gave him the Presidency and he continued his doing bad things and giving deceitful answers like "depends on the meaning of is" or "I did not have sex with that woman." Likewise, George Bush refused to respond to reports that he was a cocain user and to the DUIs both he and Dick Cheney had covered-up and when he became President he continued refusing to answer questions that inform Americans about his actions. If this is an indicator of the type of President Sen. Obama will be, I can (probably)will support him.
If Obama is so concerned about the suffering that cancer patients go through then why didn't he bother to attend the Lance Armstrong Presidential Cancer Forum?

We'll need strong drugs to dull the pain if the Democrats are in office.

Tareli, Fuquay Varina NC (Sent Sunday, November 25, 2007 12:28 PM)

Tareli, he was busy campaigning and fooling people with hope and half-truths:-)

Obama talks too much, does nothing and thats what scares me. And his arrogance and way of looking down at ordinary people makes me uncertain what I will get from him.

Anyone who acts holier than thou makes me scared.
First Obama told HS kids that he smoked dope and used drugs, now he wants to legalize it. If you think he's good to lead this country, you probably think Ozzy Osborne would make a great Secretary of Health and Human services.  -- And you wonder why we think liberals are crazy!
What a horribly misleading headline. First Read, please change the headline immediately, because those who only read headlines will get the wrong message about Obama's position on medical marijuana.

Please be responsible in your reporting.
i need a lot more of a solid agreement before i would see any of his statements as supportive.  Obama or not, he is still a politician with vulnerabilities towards non-committal illusions of support or opposition towards whatever the audience wishes to hear in order to secure a vote.
Even though many may like the policies that Senator Clinton proposes, they should also consider her record , just as Senator Clinton insists.
.
The last Clinton Administration, when faced with the fact that protection rackets where torturing people with poison and radiation, chose to avoid its responsibilities to incarcerate the criminals and protect the citizenry.
.
Instead, they made a deal with the criminal gang stalker protection rackets to leave them alone and to consequently abandon the citizenry.
.
Do we want a President who sells out the citizenry for votes?
.
Do we want a President who sends a "crime does pay" message to society?
.
Would you vote for a President who has signed nonagression deals with the KKK or the Nazi party? Gangs that torture with poison and radiation are much like the KKK and Nazi Party.
.
We do not need a sellout President. We need a principled leader President.
.
I could be wrong since I was not there when the sellout decision was made but since nobody will admit the sellout they do not have to defend it.
.
If you are one of the few who do not know what the above refers to, do a web search for “gang stalking” to see the tip of the dirtberg.  Do it before you decide to reply to my post.

Bill Clinton had special brownies. That's why he didn't inhale
At least Obama is not insulting your intelligence like Bill did when he said that he did not inhale.
What are you 10 year old.  Why would you smoke it if you are not going to inhale it...... later we learned that Bill have a difficulty with the truth. “I did not have sex with that woman”
And when his ejaculation was discovered he came out with yet another mind bender. Define what intercourse is. I may not have had sex--- even though she may have had sex with me.
You Guys should be treated like the children you are.  Hear-no-evil see-no-evil

"I was feeling really tense, so I needed a joint," Obama joked with the crowd of those who might try and undermine that type of system.

Isn't that what millions of people take muscle relaxers for daily?  I'm sure they have a far greater risk of dependence than cannabis does.

Mr. Obama, get your facts straight, then speak.
Uh, Michelle, Iowa -- "Anyone who acts holier ..makes me scared"....Like Clinton?  Edwards?  They're much more that than Obama.

Obama's the best choice for Iowa.
Can Obama really make some sense when he talks ? He is a different person when he makes speech.
This headline is completely misleading.
This is a misleading headline although it does raise the point that most Americans favor a slight legalization and it would be nice to have someone in the White House who would deal with the issue in a serious fashion.
This is the one thing he's been honest about..

I've always wondered is there actually an informed Obama supporter? do they know what he stands for? how is he any different from Senator Clinton or even the so called neocons at this point..

He promises change, but has anyone evaulated his record?

He voted in favor of reauthorizing the Patriot Act, he cannot commit to withdrawing the troops out of Iraq by 2013, possibly later.. He hasn't ruled out using strikes against Iran, not to mention the same vote he criticizes Hillary for, he missed himself and sponsored the exact same legislation designating the IRG a terrorist organization in back in April.. He implied that he would invade Pakistan, without the consent of their government.. He made votes making it more difficult for average citizens to sue big corporations.. He has no consistency on the issues of social security and taxes, in the very beginning he was for raising the cap, then having all options on the table, then appointing a bipartisan commission, now he's back to raising the cap.. He receives contributions from lobbyists, corporations and interest groups

How could anyone support him?
Obama needs scientific evidence showing pot is safe?

Hey, Barack ... just use Google. There's tons of info.
Note to those wishing Senator Obama "to go away" I have just one phrase for you: Obama is here to win so deal with that and better get used to a politician who is honest for a change.

If you read Obama's book you would know that he has dealt with this time of his life and the mistakes he made which he regrets. I for one can handle a person who admits to some shortcoming and does not pander to the masses in his response.

I respect Obama for his candid admission
Obama is too good for american politics. If you mind, he is ranked among the few who have ever run for this country higher officice with the rare qualities:
1. he is capable of putting a few sentences together correctly- the author of two best sellers.
2.he is capable of bringing people together to solve problems that others have ignore because they are too risky- how many running for president can have somebody from the other party feature in your ad, lieberman he is an independant.
maybe you guys are too entrenched into partisan bickering and you don't know any other way. if you fall under this category please take a look at the current political predicament we are in befor you go throw away your children and your future this election cycle.
Obama talks too much, does nothing and thats what scares me. And his arrogance and way of looking down at ordinary people makes me uncertain what I will get from him.
Anyone who acts holier than thou makes me scared.
sent by: Michelle, Iowa

You just described Pres. Bush. I don't see how Obama stating his previous marijuana use makes him 'holier than thou'. Please provide some proof of your hypothesis.
>Obama needs scientific evidence showing pot is safe?<

He's getting the 'evidence' from the same people that Al Gore uses to tell us Global Warming is caused by man. Because of the long holiday weekend, it will take a few more days for them to make something up.
Obama is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR).  The CFR is a secretive organization founded by D. Rockefeller in 1952, whose goal is to foster international trade at the expense of national sovereignty.  The only 2008 candidates that are not CFR members are R. Paul, D. Kucinich, and M. Gravel.
This article is deliberately misleading. Not incorrect, but misleading. It's John Solomon-esque.

You can get a few extra hits and carve out a career writing oppo-trash pieces Aswini, but at what cost to your and msnbc's rep?
They should ask Bush about cocaine.
Personally Mike Gravel's message that pot simply ought to be available at the corner liquor store and taxed makes a lot more sense to me than Obama's posturing about medicinal use.  California is already ahead of Obama.
I work with a number of cancer patients, and Obama is right on in his comments.  Personally, my mind isn't made up and I am far from eager to legalize substances, but on the issue of legalizing medical marijuana, I don't think you can really go wrong either way.
I don't like beeing limited in my choices - be it eating, drinking, smoking or medication. I am a human beeing capable of making my own decissions. No need for a politician to intervene! Freedom is simple! Go check out Ron Paul!
There is no one else who is as qualified to be President but Hillary Clinton.  No one comes close. Sling mud if you are in to that, but remember the mud washes off!!! As for the polls,  we know who we want to vote for, polls are just games and not expert data.  We shall see. GLD
A careful, conditional statement about potential use as a prescription drug, coupled to what he's already said years ago in a book -- how is this even news compared to the state of the economy, the environment, providing health care to U.S. citizens, or the transparent and non-partisan approach to transforming the floundering government offices and agencies?  Is it that rare when a man speaks the truth?
In those years, just about everyone at least tried pot.  Any candadate that denies it is suspect of lying.  You could get high just going to a concert because the air was so thick.  Anything can be abused - just look at the harm that alchohol does. Trying it is different than abusing it.  It has been used for centuries for medicinal purposes.  How about you Hillary?  Tried it huh?  It was a different day and age then.  I heard Bush did cocaine - maybe still does- I wouldn't be surprised.
Why does Obama air these long-known facts now? The answer is contained in one word: Novak.
Obama will never call for a fundamental revision of our ridiculous drug-laws. Youthful indiscretion is one thing; calling for abolishing much of the dumb laws that keep a multitude of youngsters in jail is political suicide. Obama is not going to fall on this sword.
Lex...I agree with you 100%!!!  And Michelle in Iowa -I agree with you as well!  I believe the only reason Obama declared his illicit drug use in his books and has repeated it while campaigning is because he knew it would definitely come out at some point.  I hardly consider this to be proof of his honesty, more like a political ploy to deviate the crap before it hits the fan!! Honesty? I hardly think so...
People forget that Gore admitted his marijuana use while running against Bush who denied his drug use because hypocrisy is better for youth than the truth. Here's hoping Democrats never relearn the joys and liberation of hypocrisy about drugs. Once they are in power, then, perhaps they can stop the wholesale breeding of crime that the drug war puts on society.
Morphine-smorphine, it's not rocket science. My cousin/brother Mike Balcom was given 2-6 mos. to live because of inaperable lung cancer, but he lived another 5.5 years, something he himself attributed to exercise and having an appitite, both made possible using marijuana. Mike was active and self-supporting until the very minute he died, a totally brave man. As for Obama not committing as yet, that's a smart tactic, and I have faith once elected he'll get it right, as he's done all along.
I just stumbled onto this site and obviously, this is one of those "I hate The Clintons" deals. Only those people who smoke accuse Mr. Clinton of lying about inhaling pot smoke.  Well, I'm a non-smoker and I never LEARNED how to inhale smoke.  Pot cigarettes were passed to me at parties and trying to be cool, I took a drag and embarrassed myself by nearly coughing up my guts. Tears streaming down my face and nearly throwing up.   I COULDN'T SMOKE CIGARETTES EARLIER IN MY LIFE AND I COULDN'T INHALE POT SMOKE. Non-smokers (people who never learned how) cannot, I repeat, CANNOT INHALE SMOKE!!!!!!!  Bill Clinton was NOT lying.
I've always wondered how you 'experiment' with drugs.  Nobody ever talks about experimenting with alcohol, or experimenting with tobacco or crack.  Anyone who's taken a science class or had a chemistry set when they were a kid, knows that an 'experiment' has a set of rules entirely different from those that involve rolling and smoking a joint.  The guy used pot which is no big deal, so why didn't he just say so instead of pretending he was 'experimenting.'
Thanks to O.P. for pointing out that yes, some people really don't inhale and can't seem to figure out how to do it.  The Clinton biography, "Head of his Class" by Bill Maraniss specifically deals with this issue.  When Clinton was in the U.K. as a student, a group of friends would meet regularly and when they did, they smoked pot and hash.  Several people recall Clinton doing his best to inhale pot and then leaning out a window coughing his guts out.  Years later Clinton caught hell from the media and his opponents for telling the truth.
I think this country would be a lot better off if more people tried cannabis.

The statement "Obama compared marijuana to morphine saying there was little difference between the two."  Took me by suprise for a moment though until I read the rest of his statement.

I think that most people do make this error in taking the decision that all drugs are the same.  As someone who has used both opiates (morphine in this case) and cannabis, can certainly attest to the fact that the difference between the two is like compairing apples and oranges.

Addressing this issue requires compassion and actual understanding which is unfortunately lacking by most of those experiencing a 'knee jerk' reaction to even contimplating the argument.

The idea that a drug is a drug and that's the end of the story is simply ridiculous.

Thanks for reading my two cents. ;)

Be well all of you.

If America's voters have brains this admission by Obama should allow him to move on to the bigger issues of our times. As a seventy year old if I should shortly be on my deathbed with excruciating pain, I'll want whatever does the best job to alleviate it - whatever that may be.  Give me marijuana, morphine, or something similar mixed with Jim Beam. With regard to pain on one's deathbed, I thought this was the 21st century and the remnants of hypocritical Puritanism had been eradicated. Oh, gee, how naively idealistic of me to expect an enlightened and humane treatment in this day and age. Perhaps the next century will see a little more progress when torture is finally disdained as much as the horror of someone suffering at life's end.
The Obama Campaign neatly attempts to change the subject from Obama's horrendous lack of judgment in regaling a group of 13- and 14-year old high school students with talkes of his alcohol and drug abuse. These impressionable kids can be pardoned for believing now that alcohol and drug isn't so bad as they have been led to believe because, after all, Mr. Obama did it. But rather than talk about Obama's lack of judgment in the matter, suddenly the Obama campaign changes the subject to "medical marijuana."
Message to Barack Obama and his muddling campaign: Don't mess with our kids.
I was in Audubon and heard the questions and answers.  A friend next to me identified the first questioner as a local doctor.  The account is accurate but I would describe the applause as scattered, not "strong", with a bit of laughter mixed in when he cracked "That was the point."
I was disappointed that Obama qualified his support as only for prescription dispensation, but that's necessary political caution.  At least we've moved this far in the national debate.
Whoever wins this election (though it HAS to be a democrat!), this is the right direction to go in.  I am someone who doesn't have cancer (thank God), but a chronic condition that's kept me homebound for the past 9 years of my life, with no cure in sight.  (worst case CRPS/RSD).  Though the pain is said to be as bad as someone suffering from cancer, I wish there would be a law made where you didn't have to be dying, & living in a specific state, like Ca., in order to get Rx marijuana.  Yes, it IS a controlled substance, but so are the drugs people buy on the street, & if they ARE legalized & CONTROLLED, there might be less need to get it illegally.  So many prescription drugs are sold on street corners (not talking location, just the fact that they ARE being sold), that something should be done.  And, I PRAY if it is legalized at some point, it wouldn't be something that people abuse- where soon, doctors would be paid tremendous amounts of money to be unethical (ha, like it doesn't happen already) creating a medical reason, because I'd fear that any trial run of this process would be stopped. It would seem to be a trial for medical practices as well as their patients.
As for now, I have a morphine pump which does very little to ease the pain, keeping me up late at night, enabling me to write this!   (so I apologize if my rambling didn't make much sense).
I'm not here to debate, just to say it's an idea I wish/pray/hope for (& my parents, who are SO strict about "inhaling" ANYTHING, that they're ready to fight for the legalization of marijuana).  THAT'S how serious this is.  Life is NOT enjoyable when you don't get a moment's peace.  I KNOW I'm not alone...
