CLINTON WEEKEND CAMPAIGN NOTEBOOK

PERRY, IA, Nov. 25 – Clinton talked about how her experience as First Lady helps qualify her for the job as President, said the troop surge in Iraq had not led to a political solution and bashed Obama’s health care plan again today at her first press conference in about two weeks.

She also said she didn’t put much faith in polls, in response to a question about the recent Washington Post/ABC poll that put her behind her chief rival, Obama, in Iowa.

When asked how her experience as First Lady made her more experienced than her opponents on matters of foreign policy and economic issues, the senator seemed to dodge the question at first.

"That’s for the voters to decide,” she said, “but I think that I bring unique experience, 35 years of experience, including the eight years in the White House, where I was very actively involved in issues both here at home and around the world, and I trust the voters to sort out all of these credentials and qualifications, and I’m proud that former Secretary of the Treasury Bob Rubin is supporting me for president.”

Clinton answered more directly a follow up about comments supporter and former Iowa Gov. Tom Vilsack made earlier this week that she was the face of foreign policy during her husband’s administration.

"I traveled to I think, I don’t know, maybe 80, 82 countries,” she said, “and I went a lot of places that the president or the vice president or the Secretary of State couldn’t go or couldn’t get there yet. I was the first person for the administration to go to Bosnia after the Dayton Peace accords. I went to Africa; I went to India, Pakistan, the Indian subcontinent to sort of lay the groundwork for building an American relationship with a visit to come from the president. I went to Latin America, I think every year that I was in the White House, meeting with government officials, first ladies, not for profit organizations on issues like health care and education.

"I think that there are lots of ways in which what I did was the face of America when I was there when I was representing not just my husband but the country.”

The senator reiterated a statement made to the New York Times that the troop surge in Iraq may have led to some tactical successes, but had not pushed the Iraqi government to reach a political solution to the country’s problems.

"I think the American military, if you put enough forces anywhere, is going to score successes,” Clinton said. “That’s not really the question. The question is whether there is a military solution, engineered by the American military, for the problems in Iraq, and I don’t believe there is a military solution. The whole idea behind adding more American troops was to give the Iraqi government the space and time to start making the political decisions that they have to make for themselves.

"There’s nothing we can do to create the circumstances in which the Iraqis make the tough decisions about how they’re going to live together as a country and what kind of future they’re going to provide for their people. That hasn’t happened. Even our military commanders in the last several weeks have remarked that they’re disappointed that the Iraqi government hasn’t taken advantage of the tactical achievements that the American military has made. So I don’t believe if we stay another day, stay five days, stay five years or 10 years that we’re going to make a difference militarily. Yes, we can have some tactical successes, but ultimately this is up to the Iraqis and I believe we should start bringing our troops home now.”

On the recent Iowa poll showing Obama in the lead, the senator sought to manage expectations.

"There’ve been a lot of different polls,” Clinton said, “and I, frankly, don’t pay a lot of attention to any of them, because all that’s going to count is who shows up on the night of Jan. 3, and I feel very good about where my campaign is in Iowa.

“It is a much more competitive race here than it is in other parts of the country. I started very far behind when I came into this race, but I feel we’ve been making progress, and every day that goes by, I feel that we’re gaining new supporters, and I’m just going to get up every day and do what I’m doing now, which is to make my case, have my organization reach out to voters and we’ll see what happens on Jan. 3, because that’s the only count that really matters.”

It’s worth noting that Clinton or her surrogates -- like Vilsack and Terry McAuliffe -- often mention how many polls show her leading in various states and nationwide.

Clinton also repeated her attacks on Obama’s health care plan, saying that by his own admission it did not cover 15 million people. She again stressed her belief that any plan has to start out by trying to cover everyone -- comparing plans that don’t cover everyone to saying Medicare should be voluntary and people shouldn’t have to pay the payroll tax.

In response to a question on how she would mandate coverage, Clinton said she would have to negotiate with the Congress to figure that out, adding that there were a “number of ways” to get to a mandate.

"Certainly for Democrats trying to choose a standard bearer, it’s important to know what each of us would do when it comes to one of the most important issues in this race, namely healthcare,” she said, “so I’m going to draw issue distinctions. Then when we choose a nominee, which I expect to be me, we’re going to close ranks and we’re going to run against the Republicans and win.”

The senator also said following Obama’s plan had been "confusing.”

"It’s been kind of confusing following his description of his own plan,” Clinton said. “If you go back and look, he said it was universal; he said it was sort of universal; he said it wasn’t universal; he said he covered everybody; he said he didn’t cover 15 million. He has a mandate for kids, now he’s against mandates. I think you’re going to have to ask him what his plan actually does.”

no now she is running of Robins experience. what is this i can see anything she have done. she keeps talking about experience and when pushed she refers to others. answer the question senator CLINTON.
Several years ago I worked with a young man, about 22 years old who spent his extra money saving up and traveling.  I think he had already visited 30 countries by then.  I don't think that qualifies him for president.
And neither does traveling a decade ago meeting then leaders because most of them are no longer there.
I also think her mandates are wrong.  You cannot force people to do that.  Obama is correct to leave it open to our free will.  That is what a democracy is and not being an authoritarian like Hillary.
If she was the "face of America", no wonder the US was so maligned internationally!
If America's butt is its face, then yeah, Hillary is the face of America.
My heart goes out to Dennis Quaid and his family. And to Kanye West and his family. These are two unfortunate examples of why it is so important to end the Cancer of private for profit health care delivery in America. HR 676 Single Payer Universal Health Care (Medicare For All) is The Way to go. Like all other developed countries did years ago. See sickocure.org

You see, It's not just about the 47 million Americans that have no insurance. Or the 89 million who went without insurance part of the time from 2006-2007. It's about everyone. Private for profit health care delivery is not only highly immoral, and unethical. It is just down right dangerous, and bad medicine. That injures, and kills millions of Americans needlessly. Disgracefully. Shamefully.

These injuries, and deaths should not have happened. We only heard about them because it happened to celebrities. But these tragedies are happening to thousands of Americans every day in this country. But you don't hear about it. These thousands of needless deaths, and injuries of your loved ones are covered up. Under so-called patient confidentiality. Which is just health care industry speak for "don't tell anybody we injured, or killed another one".

See, no one is immune from the Cancer of private for profit health care delivery. Mr. Quaid's children were being cared for at a very renowned hospital. And I am sure Mr. Quaid probably has excellent insurance. And can afford the finest medical care available. But as it turned out. None of that mattered.  Hospitals have always been potentially very dangerous places. But under the pressures of greed, and a rush to profit. All US hospitals have become extremely dangerous, deadly places. Like they were in the 18th century. When hospitals were primarily the place you went to DIE!

I don't know exactly how this tragedy to Mr. Quaid's babies happened. But I imagine it was the same scenario that plays out thousands of times every day across America. Driven by greed, and the profit motive hospitals cut corners as much as they can get away with. This means staff that is over worked. And under staffed. It means hiring the least experienced, and cheapest hospital staff you can get. And pushing out the more experienced safer higher paid staff.

They say the pharmacist stocked the wrong meds. And that the hospitals were warned about this problem months ago. After many other perfectly healthy new born babies were killed by this mistake. I wonder how many thousands of perfectly healthy babies were killed this way across America. And how many thousands are still being killed this way across America.

It should not have mattered what concentration of heparin the pharmacist stocked the medicine cabinets with. Because every one who administers drugs is supposed to have been taught to follow the (7 R's).

a. Right drug,

b. Right patient,

c. Right dose,

d. Right time,

e. Right route,

f. Right reason,

g. Right documentation,

This is just basic practice. A experienced person will check additional things. Before giving a patient a potentially deadly drug.

In anticipation of coming changes in our health care system. Thousands of patients are being killed at a fevered pitch. And millions injured, and poisoned with unnecessary medications, medical procedures, and surgery's. In an orgy of greed, and profiteering a head of proposed changes to our current disgraceful health care system.

HR. 676 Single Payer Universal National Health Care For All (Medicare For All) can fix this disgrace. Until then, I advise you to be careful of taking any recommended medical care at this time without doing your home work. And getting a good independent 2nd, or 3rd opinion. Especially if you have so-called good insurance coverage.

And If you have to receive medical care in, or out of a hospital. Try to have a knowledgeable family member or friend to keep an eye on what they are doing to you.

Good Luck...
It's time for a new face in America.  One that can be respected by the citizens of this country and around the world.  It's time for an honest and forthright president.  We need to reject the notion of double talk, evasiveness, divisiveness and outright lies from our leaders.

Hillary's face is attached to failed efforts at healthcare reform, NAFTA, the impeachment of a president, the Iraq war vote, the Lieberman-Kyl vote, the "right winged attack machine".

If she is the candidate of change, why does her advisory staff look like the older generation of her husbands presidency?  Why would she bring back convicted felon Sandy Berger to advise her?

It's time to step aside Hillary.
Hillary Clinton is pumping up her Iowa operation with 100 newly hired campaign operatives in that state alone, and millions of dollars of ad buys.  She knows that this election isn't going to be like before - with the compressed caucus/primary schedule, a loss in Iowa will send her campaign (really, anyone's campaign) into free-fall.
If she's not paying attention to the polls, how did she knew she was "ahead" that's why the guys are ganging up on her. What a spin.  When it's not in her favor, she doesn't believe in them.  When they have her ahead of everyone else, she's winning. Oh gawd!  What next?  She' paying the lower expectation now.
I look forward to having Mrs. Clinton as our President.  Her experience will help our country.  I will be attending Pres. Bill Clinton's Organizing for Change in DeWitt, IA on Tuesday to further hear about her intentions. for our country.
Obama had at least 4 events in Iowa, why don't you cover those to the same detail.  He's really much more interesting to listen to than Hillary.
any chance of seeing the records of this "tremedous" experience of this face of America during her tenure?

Nuances and innuendos on imaginary experiences are not helpful but as First lady, you did a great job, thanks, as for president based on that? no thanks.
Obama 08
She speaks of 8 years of experience in the White House as the First Lady, and overall 35 years of experience.
Is anybody going to challenge her on what she has accomplished in those 35 years?  What has she done to be qualified for the presidency?
If Clinton "doesn't put much faith in polls," why is HillaryHub.com regularly posting a new poll as its lead story?

Once again, Hillary shows she is a politician of convenience...
Hog wash, hog wash, hog wash -- that's all Hillary Clinton is talking. She obviously is counting on brain dead voters to vote for her. Her campaign is going no where fast!

If you are going to claim time as First Lady as experience -- then obviously you need to show the electorate what you actually worked on for the country, da.

Hillary Clinton talks about 35 years of experience. What we all want to know is, what experience?

Wow, you talk about blowing hot air, you talk about Hillary Clinton.

Two thumbs down to Hillary Clinton, let's move on to the real contenders. She's playing too many games.

She is not honest or forthcoming. She will NOT get my vote.

From a mom in Florida!
Hillary is really getting desperate, now she started to call Obama by name. You are trying to reverse the thing that you have been blamed for and that is not being clear. Obama has been clear from the getgo, he said he will mandate childern, dont confuse the public. But you didnt answer the question yourself, you dodged it politics as usual. I will repeat the question, how do u mandage health care? are you going to say have a bi partsian commission? that is not an answer.
Now she's trying to cast Obama as a waffler?  Amazing. I think Obama - unlike Clinton - has been exceptionally clear about what his plan "actually does" and - quite significantly - what it does - cannot do.  How does Clinton propose to MANDATE health insurance?  She seriously believes we'll be content to wait and find out because we trust her so implicitly? She is seriously so remote from the average American she claims to champion it's nauseating.  But the point is, no one's plan will do ANYTHING unless the candidate is elected, and how Democrats expect the country to elect HRC is beyond me.  She admitted in Aug. that "you can't always say what you think when you're running for president," and she has been following that rule consistently, which is about the only consistent thing she has done.
she's the one that will get healthcare thru, not obama. everyone says that she failed in 93'. yes, that is correct, so who better, someone that has learned from experience and retrospect or someone that will have to start at square one.  wake up america, she's the one. go hillary go!
What a joke - face of America?  How many trips did Laura Bush Take.  Hillary wasn't elected to the job of First Lady, wasn't appointed or was accountable.

She got the job because she was married to Bill.

She doesn't care about polls?  That's her whole campaign strategy with Mark Penn talking about national polls.

And about health care - mandates or forced health insurance is stupid.  Forcing health insurance makes the insurers rich.  The issue is making it affordable.

Senator Clinton does not stand up to scrutiny well.  She is the empress without any clothes.

She has no achievements - she failed on health care in the 90's and got the biggest vote of her career wrong on Iraq when she actually had to accountable.

I repeat, what a joke.  Now apparently the Clinton administration could not exist without her - she was the Sec of State, Sec of Treasury, Sec of Defense etc... all at once!!!  You all didn't know that?  Rubin, Albright etc... were figments of your imagination.  It was all Hillary!!!!
One would have to admit at least two things: 1) Hillary was a very active first lady who always seemed to be doing something or traveling somewhere. Her name and picture were in the papers far more often than that of the current first lady. Now if that was always good, obviously there were disagreements over that. Let's admit that pictures of her walking into court to answer questions of that grease ball Ken Starr we can do without. Although this was not entirely her fault. He could have come to the White House had he been more accommodating. 2) Right or not, when you sleep with the President for eight years (or for most of that time anyway)there are certain things that you are going to be aware of that the average citizen has no clue about. And an active first lady like her will not be afraid to voice her opinion when she is alone or in bed with the President. (One would hope they are alone at that time) How much he acted on her advice or opinion only the two of them will ever know. If you are married and have been in some serious situations that required action on your part you will know what I'm talking about, if you are single, you will not. So, does she have foreign policy experience? I think she has as much as any of them and probably more. Should that make a difference in how you vote? You decide!
(foreign travel-modo)
Obama might have been thinking of it when he mocked Kabuki Congressional junkets:
“You get picked up at the airport by a state convoy and a security detail. They drive you over to the ambassador’s house and you get lunch. Then you go take a tour of some factory or some school. Children do a native dance.”

(Healthcare)
"Their(Clinton) essential argument is the only way to get everybody covered is if the government forces you to buy health insurance. If you don't buy it, then you'll be penalized in some way," said Obama, a U.S. senator from Illinois. "What I have said repeatedly is that the reason people don't have health insurance isn't because they don't want it, it's because they can't afford it."

Now that her 'face is behind' in the polls, it looks like a desparate Hillary will start her 'campaign of personal destruction' against Barack very soon. I think the voters in Iowa have seen enough of Hillary and the Clinton Machine.

I wonder, how can a 'frontrunner' with all of her endorsements (including Harkin's wife and former governor Vilsack), her hubby Bill campaigning for her, Hillary's 'war chest' filled with millions of dollars, and her designation as 'inevitable' by the media, can be only in SECOND PLACE in Iowa? Why is she declining in New Hampshire?

Back to the drawing board Hillary. Attack, attack, attack. I am sure the Iowa voters will be impressed.
In my view there are only 2 candidates who can bring change and some trust back: Denis Kucinich and Ron Paul.
Clinton, Obama, Edwards or Guliani will only continue with the wrong sick political course and take this country back to start all over again.
Well now,
Back in April on 'First Read' I had a chance to comment, look at how it now stands. No. It wasn't April Fool's Day. Simply look at how the tide surges. Apr 30'th 12:24:
"Despite what the Demo contenders are saying now, the serious minded among them realize full well that what they are saying now is window dressing. They will need the "cover" if one of them takes the Presidency to say, "Well, you know I'm on the record as against the war, but." By then they will be able to say, "well the situation has changed."
Seems the Dems and the Repubs are pretty much like-minded on Iraq now (well we've got Kuchinich and that Paul guy).
In his heart of hearts, Herschel would like to see McCain get the nod. Not because of his pandering to his "base" but rather because, well he's been where the least among us wish to go. I Herschel D. hope the Nation takes the middle ground. We must get this right.
No, not the 'political right, not the political left'. Folks, we've got to get back together somehow. I know read the blogs you agree with and learn nothing. Agree with everyone you agree with. But democracy is a longterm business. Shay's Rebellion, but a few years after 1787 we (here in the now US)began to get it right.
Let's agree to disagree, but let's not call each other names. We are where we are, let's see if we can get it somehow right.
Mrs. Clinton,
I might actually vore for you, but I'll hold my nose. I'd rather vote for Obama.I have voted for Dems for public office in the past (much to my friends disgust) but: might you rush a team of archivers down to the Clinton Library and clear up this,
"That’s for the voters to decide,” she said, “but I think that I bring unique experience, 35 years of experience, including the eight years in the White House, where I was very actively involved in issues both here at home and around the world, and I trust the voters to sort out all of these credentials and qualifications, and I’m proud that former Secretary of the Treasury Bob Rubin is supporting me for president.”
An UNDECIDED INDEPENDENT,
Herschel D. Ducker
Wow! Hillary really shines in this exposition of her views on the job facing the next president.  She makes Obama look like a dreamer ill-prepared to face, let alone handle what lies in wait for our next leader. He definitely needs more "seasoning"of which Hillary seems to have in abundance.
i fail to see how that was posibale unless she was madeleine albright secratery of state in Bill clintos goverment. are just going to let her use everyone experience except her own. this is equivalent to policital plaigerism
It's certainly true that Hillary Clinton was the face of America and is once again - interest in the US is now rising again here in Europe, all because of her candidacy.  The only news we get from the States now is the saber-rattling over Iran and the candidacy of Senator Clinton.  People around the world are hoping next year they will hear the message "America is back!"
Mrs. Clinton,

Might you send (I hear your campaign is receiving $millions$) a couple of archivists to the Clinton Library in order to clarify your "35 years" of experience?
The only reason I ask is that, here in Arkansas, they keep telling us that no money is there to search the records to back up your resume'.
I do know that when I fill out a job app they ask me for a phone number. Is there any difference? Might you simply say,"...it is reported I had 35 years of experience..."
 Good luck in Iowa.
Look who's talking about "confusing". Now she's trying to put words into her opponent's mouth.

I always knew this woman cannot be trusted. Regardless of how hard she's been working her image this election, she's always and always will be a scheming, lieing, dishonest politician.

It's DISGRACE FOR AMERICA when a first lady says she went to places that the vice president or the Secretary of State couldn’t go. She's trying to denigrate Al Gore again, like she did when he was Vice President. THIS WOMAN WILL NEVER GET MY VOTE.
I like these campaign notebooks. I like hearing what the candidates have to say, without a lot of snarky commentary.  The people in Iowa are asking the same questions we all are. Thanks for providing the meat.
The Bush sisters have been living in the White House for 7 years. Maybe they should run for the Republican nomination?
Amazing... she is behind in the Iowa polls and decides its time to start taking questions from the press... the reporters must have fallen over in disbelief...
"Then when we choose a nominee, which I expect to be me, we’re going to close ranks and we’re going to run against the Republicans and win."

Not so fast, Senator Clinton, not so fast.  I don't believe that for one minute many of the people who are supporting Senator Obama will support you.  Personally, if you are the nominee, I think we will be more divided than ever as a party, and possibly lose this election to the Republicans.
Hillary doesn't pay attention to polls?!?!?  I wonder if she had a straight face when she said that.
Hilary is a liar, she says she does not put much stock into polls....she and her husband not only live by polls, they govern by polls....unless of course it goes against them...........
She is being preseumptive again and trying to get those second choice voters to go for her instead of Obama "close ranks and support her" as though Democrats will always put party ahead of of substance. It is worth noting that she is polarizing WITHIN the Democratic party as well as nationally.
what a face. thank goodness there are sometral faces on REAL PEOPLE.
I find it ironic that ALL politicians have no faith in polls when they are shown behind in those polls. I am reasonably certain that they have all the faith in the world in those polls when they are leading. When they are ahead "the people have spoken"! When they are behind "the people don't know what the hell they are talking about".
The Hill is faltering and the numbers are tightening, this election is getting more interesting everyday.
Halliburton!  Halliburton!  Valerine Plame!  No blood for oil!  Mission Accomplished Mission Accomplished!  Housing Decline!
I cannot for the life of me see how Senator Clinton can equate eight years as First Lady with experience to be president.  The First Lady has no accountability to the electorate simply because the First Lady is not an elected official.  Granted we would expect from time to time that the president will discuss shop with his or her spouse but this is not the same as being an active policy maker who has to both engage the public and build consensus with the other branches of government.  The more Mrs. Clinton touts this so called experience, the more it brings into question her true ability to lead.  Right now, as an elected official who is use to the burdens of accountability, Senator Obama has the advantage.

I remember those Clinton people on planes headed to Washington. They were going to make the US something very special. I'm sure they are waiting their next turn at bat.

I also remember the destruction of a family that was working in extreme circimstances to stay in the agriculture business. The Clinton economics that were so good for America, destroyed my business. The democrats will have to overcome 38 family votes to secure office. Good Luck!
Looking over the president's shoulder for eight years doesnt give you the experience to be the president.  Hillary is an idiot..

It is my believe that President Clinton's success as the American President wouldn't have been possible without the support of his wife. As the saying goes: Behind a successful Man is a woman. Her journeys to other countries on behalve of American and other undocumented supports she may have given him during his tenor are tesitimony to this. These are certainly experiences that doesn't come cheap.
jacksmith writes: These are two unfortunate examples of why it is so important to end the Cancer of private for profit health care delivery in America.

Agreed 100%. Americas health care system should be run just like the Post Office is run.
I see we have a few Clinton robots posting here. I've noticed that the two people who actually support her have posted things that look like they're directly lifted from one of her press releases. You people need to reallize (and Clinton needs to as well) that the American people aren't that stupid. We know when we're being lied to. If we wanted another president who avoids questions and can't get their facts straight, we'd elect Bush for a third term.

Clniton is the atypical politician, she talks out of her butt and thinks everyone in the voting populace are jsut idiot serfs who will buy whatever we're fed. Obama's palns aren't perfect but at least he doesn't have a history of failure. I wish he'd focus on her so-called "experience" because all of her 35 years of experience have led to are failures.
OH, what was obama's stand on driver licenses? He waffled that question, a question he should have known was coming.
Inexperience... that's him
Senator Clinton never intimated that traveling abroad frequently was in and of itself a qualification for President. However, it does help to know something about countries, their culture, and their political philosophy before you engage them in terms of enacting foreign policy. Also, she has to be tough. It is amazing how many people, both men and women, have said that a woman can never be president because she would become "hysterical" or "emotional" in times of crisis. Whether she is forthcoming, honest, or not- that is something you must decide for yourself by doing the work and not letting news outlets, who have attached that tag to her and many a politician, decide that for you. Let's not forget that America had been maligned worldwide well before Clinton made her trips abroad or, I am loathed to say this, even before Bush got into office. History tells us this much. Surely, we should know that anti-Americian sentiment has a long history worldwide
