Congress: More on Lott

NBC News has learned that Trent Lott in the midst of informing close allies that he plans to resign his Senate seat before the end of the year. It's possible a formal announcement of his plans could take place as early as today. Lott's office initially denied that he would step down, but subsequent requests for information about his plans went unanswered.

While the exactly reason Lott is stepping down before he finishes his term is unknown, NBC’s Ken Strickland reports, the general speculation is that a quick departure immunizes Lott against tougher restrictions in a new lobbying law that takes effect at the end of the year. That law would require Senators to wait two years before entering the lucrative world of lobbying Congress.

Also unclear that this point is how Lott's seat would be filled. One Lott supporter in the know said he hoped GOP Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour would appoint Rep. Chip Pickering to the post, keeping the seat in the hands of Republicans, at least in the short term.

Lott's departure would also leave a vacancy in the Senate GOP Leadership. Lott is currently the Republican Whip, the No. 2 slot behind Republican Leader Mitch McConnell. We're told Lott is backing Arizona Republican Jon Kyl to replace him, but that will be determined by secret ballot within the Republican caucus.

The New York Times front-pages this story today: “Confronting an enormous fund-raising gap with Democrats, Republican Party officials are aggressively recruiting wealthy candidates who can spend large sums of their own money to finance their Congressional races, party officials say.”

yes it is good to see trent lot get out he was not helping the people with his job anyway . and i hear that this mike or taxhike mike is a Lot Like Trent lOT.
Replace him with Clinton B. LeSueur for now. :-)
By default and as whip, Lott could have done a great deal to minimize the enormous amount of national debt we have accrued.  Unfortunately he did not.  Future generations might recognize his mild manners for the mild agreement that has put us in an undesirable debt situation.
The writers of this article should take some basic sentence structure lessons

Look at the first sentences in the 2nd & 3rd paragraphs and tell you wonder why our kids are being dumbed down
and another one bites the dust.
Key to the whole thing is "restrictions on how soon a retiring Senator can become a lobbyist."  That's the gravy train.  As long as retiring lawmakers can just slide into multi-million dollar lobbying jobs, integrity is going to come in second (or worse.)
I think the mess being uncovered in Alaska is also going to involve this slimy man   Carol Turner.
I thought Trent Lott said a few years back (after the Strom Thurmond fiasco) that he planned to devote the rest of his life to fighting racism.  So I naturally assume that this resignation is related to that, and in years to come we can expect to see him haunting the streets of America on his self-appointed task, sometimes crossing paths with O.J. Simpson, who will be engaged in his lifelong quest to find the killer of his wife...
Volunteer, Senator Lott has not announced his departure from the senate.
Goodbye & good Ridance to the RACIST face of America. Maybe now, the people of Mississippi will( not casino owners) have some representation in the senate. The GOP ( Gay ole Pedophile)showed there hand by letting this racist become a part of the senate leadership again after the strom thurmond fiasco. The 20% still supprting this bunch are being left behind to say WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT HAPPPPPPPPENED to republican majority? Wallow in Your shame, youe DESERVE EVERYTHING COMING YOUR WAY!
Another fine representative of the "Party of Values" slithers into the distance, leaving a trail of slime behind.
Look at the first sentences in the 2nd & 3rd paragraphs and tell you wonder why our kids are being dumbed down.

I added a period to the end of your sentence.

Must be that liberal education that makes our kids so dumbed down....
I would prefer the new law to say no one who served in Congress should be allowed to lobby Congress.  Especially since they will still be collecting retirement benefits from "us".  Two years?  Big deal!  They make enough money under the table to keep them going for longer than that!  I know I sound cynical but I am SOOO SICK of politicians.  All of them.
Lott is reneging on his contract with the voters of Mississippi halfway through so his term.  His reason ?

So he will not be covered by new ethics laws that take effect on 1/1/08.

What better definition of a person lacking in ethics and integrity at the core than this appalling resignation ?

Trent Lott has written his own epitaph and defined himself. "Here lies a person that put greed before all other values".

People of all political beliefs should be appalled at this naked display of greed, selfishness and lack of honor.
Take this for what it is worth. Perez Hilton's gossip blog claims that Trent Lott was involved with a male escort named Benjamin Nichols and the discovery of the situation has prompted the senator's sudden departure.  According to a linked article from the blog Big Head DC, there is a news organization working on the story.  How true any of this is, I do not know.
The Republicans keep falling!!!!

Trent Lott oddly and abruptly announced his resignation from the U.S. Senate on Monday.

And now we know why!

The Mississippi Senator reportedly has had a relationship with one high-rent male escort!!!!!

is this true. Why isn't Huffpo talking about this.
