Congress: More Lott fallout

Not surprisingly, many reports this morning use the Lott resignation to reinforce the CW that the Republican chances of winning back either the House or Senate is getting more remote by the day. Just when the Congressional Republican leadership thinks their retirement roll call has come to an end, another sneaks up on them.

Even before Sen. Trent Lott (R) officially announced his resignation yesterday, speculation abounded over when a special election would take place to replace him. Would it be 90 days, as it seemed to indicate in Mississippi law, or would it be November 2008? Mississippi law reads that the governor sets a special election to replace a resigning member of Congress within 90 days, unless it takes place in the year of a statewide general or congressional election, according to an official in the Mississippi Secretary of State’s office. Gov. Haley Barbour (R) interpreted that this way: Since this is a statewide election year (with the gubernatorial election), and Election Day has passed, the election to replace Lott would take place on Election Day 2008 (Nov. 4).

But the Mississippi Democratic Party appears to be girding for a fight over the decision. It disputes Barbour’s interpretation. If Lott “does resign this calendar year we expect the governor to uphold the law and call a special election within 100 days,” writes Wayne Dowdy Mississippi Democratic Party chairman, in a statement, factoring in the 10 days allotted between an announcement of resignation and 90 days for setting a date for a special election.

The Hill has more on this brewing controversy.

And finally, Dennis Hastert officially submitted his resignation yesterday, allowing Illinois Gov. Blagojevich (D) just enough time to call a special primary election on Feb. 5, the same day as the Illinois primary. Republicans running for the seat include Sen. Chris Lauzen, Jim Oberweis, Kevin Burns, and Michael Dilger. Democrats running for the seat include John Laesch, Bill Foster, Jotham Stein, and Joe Serra.

The democrats can howl all they want to......

The people saw what liberalism did to Louisiana and decided they did not want to go down that road......

Mississippi will stay Republican.....
Yes, MS will stay Republican because the state undoubtedly has the most ignorant people of any state in the US.
Jerry, Jerry, Jerry.  Most people would say that it was corruption that did in Louisiana.  Thank God Republicans are represented by such upstanding gentleman as Duke Cunningham, Larry Craig, and Ted Stevens.  Vote Republican, no corruption there!
Is anyone looking at the REASON he resigned abruptly?

The word on the street is:  He was involved with a GAY ESCORT.

Jerry, Jerry, Jerry.  Most people would say that it was corruption that did in Louisiana.  Thank God Republicans are represented by such upstanding gentleman as Duke Cunningham, Larry Craig, and Ted Stevens.  Vote Republican, no corruption there!

I guess we do forget about William Jefferson, democrat congressman from LOUISIANA who had $90,000 in his freezer.

By the way First read....
did he ever pay taxes on that money?....
should have tax evasion charges on his record as well.
Here's the link to view his one of Lott's "male escort" experience(s) - and Lott had so much to say when Republican Senator Craig was caught foot tapping for gay sex in a men's rest room.  Karma!  Look for more to come on Lott via Larry Flynt and his investigation into Lott's corruption activities.

The reason Lott is resigning now is because in Jan. 1, new ethics laws come into effect requiring senators to wait two years before they can lobby their former coleagues, rather than the current one year ban.

Besides, Jerry, politics in LA is wierd.  My mom, who was born in northern LA, had a saying that they elected politicans they hated to Congress in LA because they wanted to get them out of the state.
Hey Jerry, as for tax evasion, check out how many DOD contractors are delinquent on their taxes since the early 1990's, but are still receiving contracts. Do you think the IRS would let us off the hook??
What are we doing talking about corruption?  I think the issue is law of Mississipi.  It would seem pretty clear if Lott resignes later than 1/3/08 then the Governor must call a new election.  I think Lott is hungry for Lobbing money so he has to leave by 12/31/07 or else he has to wait an addition two years to start his new job.
Jerry you are such an adolescent. Can you get it through kool-aid brains that politicians on both sides are corrupt period;however; certain  Republicans like yourself are so blinded by partisanship and solely focusing on Democrats who are corrupt and conviently ignoring THE MOUNTAIN OF CORRUPTION IN THE REPUBLICAN RANKS either by tax evasion, bribes, visiting protitutes and lets not forget illegal wiretaps. Jerry we all know your take on the Democrats and liberals blah blah blah!
Well I'm just happy that Hastert is leaving and there is opportunity for others to run.  I'm leaning towards Joe Serra because of his support for our troops and I'll never support someone like Foster or Laesch who do not support the troops.
Prositute or lobbyist - not that much difference, and when did an ethics law ever bother a republican? Somewhat "unethical" to help right wing death squads murder nuns, but that never stopped St. Ron of Reagan.

"Ethics." Please.
Hey jerry mississippi helped the casinos, they are open but real misissippians are still living in trailers, I quess they are more stupid and ignorant than the people in louisiana if they continue to believe in the same people who run the repub party down there. Huh?
Hey, I live in Mississippi and you are so right.  Right on.  Thanks for speaking up for us Mississippians.
