Romney clarifies answer on Muslims

From NBC/NJ's Erin McPike and NBC's Mark Murray
ST. PETERSBURG, FL -- At an availability with reporters here, Romney answered questions about today's report suggesting that he would not appoint Muslims to his Cabinet. "No, that's not what I said. His question was, Did I need to have a Muslim in my Cabinet in order to confront radical jihad, or would it be important to have a Muslim in my Cabinet?' And I said no, I don't think you need a Muslim in the Cabinet to take on radical jihad any more than we needed a Japanese American to understand the threat that was coming from Japan or something of that nature."

Romney continued, "It's something I rejected, number one. And number two, point out that haven't given a lot of thought to the people I would have in my Cabinet. I don't have boxes I check off in terms of ethnicity, and it's not that I need a certain number of people representing ethnic groups. Instead, I would choose people based on their merits... I'm open to having people of any faith, ethnic group. But they would be selected based on their capacity and capabilities and what they could bring to the Administration, but I don't choose people based on checking off a box."

What sparked this story was a op-ed in today's Christian Science Monitor by Mansoor Ijaz, who wrote: "I asked Mr. Romney whether he would consider including qualified Americans of the Islamic faith in his cabinet as advisers on national security matters, given his position that 'jihadism' is the principal foreign policy threat facing America today. He answered, '…based on the numbers of American Muslims [as a percentage] in our population, I cannot see that a cabinet position would be justified. But of course, I would imagine that Muslims could serve at lower levels of my administration."

*** UPDATE *** From NBC's Domenico Montanaro
A search of FEC records, finds that a Mansoor Ijaz has given $23,000 to Democratic candidates and committees from 1997 to 2000, including $2,000 to Hillary Clinton’s 2000 Senate run and $15,000 to the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee.

Mitt...a typical response from this flip flopping fading fast freak show!
I think there better be a video camera in the room when ANY presidential candidate has to answer tough questions.

All except Hillary....
We all know she doesn't answer the tough questions.
Wow, that was pretty bad. Maybe Romney should have kept to his not telling everything line (the one he employed in response to Obama's candid admission to drug use as a youth).
Ps. Romney's response in the Christian Science Monitor piece is not even close to what he claimed it was later.
Ijaz wanted to sink Romney so bad he had to make up a story, what a jerk.
Sounds to me like another time when the context of the story is cherry picked by the MSM. If anyone knows about being religiously tolerant, it should be Romney. Context MSM look into it.
Sounds like big insult to Muslims. Don't try to spin your goofs, yourself, Mitt. Somebody is taping that, too. Face it, you're as unhip to Islam, as many Americans are to Mormonism. The goofier you get about Islamic Jihad, the more people will wonder if there is a Mormon Jihad. Best hire Spin Artists with MA's in 'Diversionary Projection',...or suck up to FOX, and borrow a couple dozen of theirs.
Ha.  Mitt of ALL people, should understand the pain of being a part of a religion scorned by many.  A lot of people out there think Mormons are a cult, and a dangerous one.  Not unlike Muslims.  People tend to condem what they don't understand, and that's a shame.  For people of ALL faiths.  And not surprisingly, Mitt plays to the lowest common denominator of the republican base.  Those who "fear" outsiders.  Only those who believe this snake oil salesman (Mitt) are more pathetic.
what's this crap about mohammed the teddy bear.
go figure, amerika! your next with this correctness crap. its stinks of poop! kakka, baloney. double standard dung hole stuff.
let the muslims on an important cabinet post, for what, so we can learn to live in the 13th century ??
I don't know why a person who has previously only donated to democrats in his entire life was even taken seriously in his criticism of Romney.  (see http://www.newsmeat.com/media_political_donations/Mansoor_Ijaz.php, to view his donation records).

Imagine the media taking this serously a similar claim about Obama or Clinton by Rush Limbaugh or someone else from the Right. This was a case of someone looking for a reason to target Romney.
And there you have it, another shining example of special interest groups asking a pointed (read as trapping) question, and then innacurately reporting the answer in order to taint and control the others viewpoint. No one seems to have the honesty, integrity, or courage to "shoot straight", ask real questions, and report clean-unbiased answers that were given. Are we looking out for the best interest of "We the People" by twisting words and lying and gratifying eachother with false answers ? Or are we simply trying to controll the issue by whatever means neccessary so that "WE" can be on the winning team and regain control for our particular party?
- I thought the premis of Life, liberty, and the persuit of happiness was supposed to be safe guarded by these jokers: the media, the wrighters, the representatives, the house and cabinet, the president.

- Feed a person poison to cure his cold and he will die, same applies to you country people... wake up.

- The samurai -
Who cares who he would put in his cabinet at this point, atleast he is honest about his answers unlike some of the so-called front runners (hilary rudy)

Romney 08
W hires people that fill in the box. If it is good enough for our president, it should be good enough for Romney. We all know repuke loyalty is all the matters to repukes. That hate all other americans that do not praise the republican partry as god. In their minds god and republican are one in the same. So Romney we know only cronies and loyalists will fill your cabinet posts. I just wish repukes quit lying and say what is really on their minds. They are all about power and god. They will use any method to retain their power for the sake of their god. That is why the use negative advertising all the time. In the name of GOD, no smearing or fear mongering will get in their way on there quest for power.
Mitt's response seems reasonable to me.
Mitt's comments (after the fact) coincide with his previous comments on "involving" various ethnic groups in his administration.  He doesn't fill posts that way, he looks at merit and that's all he cares about.  That common sense approach is the way it should be.

In my mind this american born muslim is trying to stir up controversy where none exists, and the media is falling for it.
This guy puts his foot in his mouth more often than he puts it in his shoes.
I find it interesting that you and other members of the Mainstream Media have failed to ask Gov. Romney a question that is central to his religious beliefs and would impact on how he treats a whole class of citizens-namely Blacks.

As taken from the Black Mormon Homepage:

In February, 1848, Brigham Young preached, for the first time, that Negroes were "the children of Cain" and "cursed". By "cursed" he meant:

1. They were Canaanites and were to be servants of the descendants of Shem and Japheth (Whites and Semites) until the curse was removed by the LORD.

2. They were banned from the Mormon priesthood and Mormon temples until the curse was removed by the LORD.

3. They were the children of Cain, and Cain was the first Negro; the black skin was the "mark" of Cain.

From 1848 until 1978 (130 years) black Mormons could not partake of the Higher Ordinances of Mormon Temples (Endowments and Sealings) nor could black Mormon men be ordained to any office in the priesthood (there were only two exceptions to this rule, the son and grandson of Elijah Abel); which every single Mormon male is supposed to hold after the age of 12.

Why don’t you ask Romney if he agrees with Brigham Young, what his father’s thoughts were on this issue when he ran for President, and how it has framed his outlook on race relations?

Mike Huckabee has answered about his views on race. Why don’t you and other members of the media ask Romney about this?  Why are you cutting him such slack? Where is your journalistic integrity or basic curiosity regarding this fundamental question?

Pat, what do you mean "fading fast freak show?" If you look at his statistics, he is far from fading fast. In fact, he is rising steadily. It would almost appear that Romney is the biggest threat to the Democrats among the GOP while Guiliani is looking more and more like one of them.
They pick on him, why? B/C he's honest. If only the CNN were honest about the Democrats' hidden agenda and back-door handshakes with academic and militant terrorists. When a Mormon dude says "No" it's better than a Democrat saying "Yes,"--that yes to every single PC question has turned the Democratic party into a premature freak. Good for the Mormon for refusing to salute the PC movement. How many Muslims in America support terrorism and why the animosity towards civil rights (and doesn't their"peaceful" religion welcome social hatred?); now, these are hard-core questions.
True to the saints' leadership history, most committed Mormons will say just about ANYTHING if they think it is what is "politically" expedient and advanatageous to the first goal of Mormonism which historically and currently is the subjugation first of the nation and second of the world to Mormonism.  Don't expect to hear temple Mormon Romney espouse that goal, however, the guy is super-prepped for dealing with gentiles, as non-Mormons are labeled by Mormons.
That last bit does raise the question of how unbiased is the person asking the questions.  Well, I guess you also have wonder why would someone be asking the question now.  There is no nominee on either of the major parties, and many of the minor parties may not have thought of who would run on their ticket yet.
I think he is the most honest man running look again at the background of the other and how they live their lives and it speaks volumes............this man has turned things around time and time again and he can do it to this country he has helped many with his own money and time  take a DEEPER LOOK
A guy who goes on every day about "jihadism" and "islamofascism" knows all about religious tolerance?  Doesn't sound like it from where I sit.
I go along with Mitt you pick the people that can do the job.
I just have to laugh at the comments criticizing Romney in this story. It's completely obvious that this story was made up in an attempt to smear Gov. Romney's image. Notice this conversation was "off the record"... how convenient. The man who wrote this claim is a Democratic supporter who has given over $23,000 to Democratic Elections since 1996. The Democrats greatly fear running up against Gov. Romney because he wil be so hard to smear in the General Election.
viva george w bush. we mexicans want bush for another 4 years.
amazing -- after 911, we are in a world war with a specific religious stance. A group who has & continually swears to destroy all of thewestern world.
Why would anyone even think a president should consider putting one of them in the cabinet!!
Let's get back to the basics.  This nation was founded upon Judeo-Christian principles and beliefs, period.  We must remember that in a democratic republic the majority does not rule.  Instead it is driven to satisfy the demands of the minority, no matter the consequences at the expense of the majority.  Instead of raising people to a higher standard, this great divide will continue between a vocal minority and their agendas, whatever they represent and may be, and the silent majority.  Everybody wants his or her rice bowl filled.
As someone who gagged through his 4 years as governor of my state, it is clear that he is an empty suit who will say absolutely anything to whatever group he is pandering to to get elected. He is the most transparently manipulative politician I have ever seen. The thought of him ever being president makes me want to vomit.
Please! I am not a supporter of Mit Romney however I believe his response to an American of the Islamic faith was correct. Hopefully we can hold America's cabinet position to the highest standards and choose a qualified individual that is a man for the times. An Islamic Practicing American is not a man for these times.
People. Try reading the entire article before you post. Mitt didn't "condem" muslims. He clarified what a biased person wrote in the Christian Science Monitor. He said that he doesn't see ethnicity or religion as a qualifying factor.

What qualifies someone to the Cabinet are their "capacity and capabilities," their merits. That is exactly as it should be. Great for you Mitt for correcting a poor attempt at public smearing.
It is a little suspicious when the Republicans tout Hillary as the best the Democrats have !!
Hillary is the easiest to beat  is what is really being touted !!!
Well, to the pointy heads asking "Huh...duh...wuts wrong wit' Mitt excluding Mus-lims?" Look, you dumb-bunnies, for the rest of us the irony here is delicious. Mitt and his freakish supporters run around whining like schoolgirls about anti-Mormon bigotry and Mitty reveals himself as nothing more than a pathetic bigot. LOL!
what's wrong with us(Americans) can't we look for the good in someone and not the bad all the time. Mitt, is pro family , pro American, and I think and I believe is a good man with all the right things to take are country to the place were we need to go. Sometimes good is good and bad is bad, not good is bad and bad is good. I'm LDS and I'm not a cult member, but I'm sure that there is some who think that there's 13 million cult members in the world. I didn't know that we were bad for believing in God and his Jesus was a bad thing, I guess I should feel ashamed, not!!!!! When this country was founded by God fearing men and women they didn't say I'm sorry and Mitt, shouldn't either, When he goes to bed at night I know with out a doubt that he say's a prayer and when and if were lucky enough to have him a or President I know tha tare country well be in his prayers every night, we need them. This is coming from a Democrat the one that's was good enough for my Grand Parents and my Parents but not good enough for me.
It seems like a common sense approach to the problem.  It would be like saying that he needs to have a catholic on the cabinet to understand the problems with the IRA.
Always entertaining to see the so many accusing Romney of flip-flopping, no matter the circumstances.
I would think the smart thing for any candidate to do would be to employ the most knowledgable and effective person for a cabinet or any other post. To choose one on the basis voter group numbers or political and religious correctness may good politics but it's not good government.  We've seen in the present administration what those standards of selection can do for foreign and any other policies.
So how does the fact that the questioner donated to the Democratic party excuse Romney's foolish answer? Or is that not what you meant with your UPDATE!
Mitt Romney is a good person. who cares what his religious back ground is. People call him a flip floper but i would much rather have a president who can look at the isues honestly and change his mind about them when new evdence or enlightenment comes to the table. Would you rather have a president who is so stuborn that he can't admit he's wrong? who keeps making the same bad decisions over and over. Mitt Romney is the best example of somone willing to change their mind and act inteligently when new evidence comes along. People should look at who he is and what he's done and stop making him a mockery because of his religion. America is supposed to stand for religious freedom. Mitt Romney might have a differanty religious back ground but if you look at what the mormons stand for they are about as hard core religious conservative as you can get. The fact that Mitt romney ever was pro gay marraige and pro abortion is highly unusual for a mormon and shows his flexability with the issues. People want to snare him in his words to dis credit him and thats sad. people say things they don't mean all the time. if everyone looked at them selves they would find that they have said somthing before that they didn't mean. how would you feel if people harrassed you about somthing that didn't come out of your mouth right.
I personally could care less what muslims think, or mormons think, I wouldn't vote for a candidate of either religion because they are both pedophile prophet, and profit based. How can anyone take such blatantly violent, and bigoted cults seriously. It not the interpretation, it's the example of their founding prophets that make these groups nuts.
What is everybody upset at?  What is wrong with what Romney said here?  I don't want Muslims in the Cabinet.  I want Americans in the cabinet.  Period.  You have to be more American than Muslim.
I would hope and pray that any president would put in the most qualified person no matter what their race, religion, sex, national origin, so on and so forth.  Affirmative action just makes sure that someone with a certain race, religion, etc.  gets a position for a quota or to be politically correct.  Wouldn't you like to know that you got the position because you were the best qualified or because you fit a certain race, religion, etc.
Why would we need muslims in "Office"?
we need Americans in the Cabine
I'm glad Romney thinks so! not like some of you who do not have an idea what muslims whant to do with Americans.
The last time I looked, this was a Christian nation, founded on Christian beliefs and values. I would hope that Mr. Romney would appoint men and women that are also grounded in the Christian heritage that this nation represents.
Sounds to me like everyone has thier own opinion of what they think is right for them.  Look at us as a nation.  Why do we let other influence our opinion by negative slander.  The truth will come out, it always does!  America, needs the right person as a leader more now than ever.  Look at the candidates individually for what leadership abilities they have.  What have they done to make things right in the past.  This is character. In everything I've seen and heard.  They are all politicians but who has character.  My vote is for Mitt.  He has proven charater to make things right no matter who's lives are at stake.  Wouldn't our country be better off if slander and false statements were left where they belong!   Leave that garbage out of this.  This is our country, Let's make it better than how we found it!
I am always amazed and mortified how many really ignorant people live in this great country of ours.  I have no doubt that this country is being watched over by Someone greater than ourselves, call him what you may (God, Allah, Jehovah, etc.) because if it wasn't for His love and concern, I have no doubt that we would have been in servitude many years ago. My only concern is that His patience and understanding will soon run out (I can't blame Him either, mine would have long ago) Mitt Romney is truly a breath of fresh air,in the political forum and would be a great president and asset to our country.  We need someone who wants to be president because of his love for his country, not his "love for Power, Prosperity, or  Prestige". He's already accomplished those things through Hard work.  I pray for his election to the office of President and plan tobe at his inauguration in January 09.
I have listened to Mr. Romney on many issues.  The "quote" "based on the numbers of American Muslims [as a percentage] in our population, I cannot see that a cabinet position would be justified" by Mr. Ijaz doesn't even sound like something Romney would say.
Always interesting to read peoples opinions to see if they have any substance to what they are saying. Very few facts.
What's interesting about this blog is to see if people actually read the Q and A. If they have then their responses make more sense wether their for Mitt or not. Or if a Democrat vs a replublican or not.

The media loves to creates issues that were never intended. When the clarifiaction comes people cry foul. This entrapment is very similar to the paparazzi. they could careless about us, the candidates or the celebrities they follow. Just want $$$.
What people need to look at closely is the character of the candidate. Do the qualities of the candidate fit their general profile. I say general because every candidate varies in criteria. Pick the best match and be grateful to vote and to have any say in the process.
Not a perfect process and is not really the point in question.
Mitt overall is a good guy for those that know anything about him.
You should look more at what he brings to the table and what he can do for this country as a whole.
From the comments here, it appears that it isn't the Muslims who are offended, so much as the chronically offended, who are offended on their behalf.

Truth is, the LDS church and the Muslims get along pretty well.  The LDS Humanitarian Services and the Red Crescent Society (Muslim Red Cross) have a fine working relationship.  And when that tsunami hit the largest Muslim country in the world, the Mormons were the FIRST in there with aid.

Having a Mormon president would not do anything to inflame the Muslims, and might have some effect in the other direction.

When you read the two accounts (Romney's and Ijaz's), and you read that Ijaz is a BIG contributor to Democratic candidates, only Romney's account has the ring of truth to it.
