Richardson's shots at Hillary?

From NBC/NJ’s Carrie Dann
Two new pieces of direct mail in Iowa. One is a large color 8-by-14-inch piece (.pdf) from Team Edwards that advertises he’s “Fighting for American Families.” Pretty bread-and-butter: the text outlines his opposition to NAFTA, promises that he’ll “end special treatment for CEO pensions when workers are cheated out of theirs” and rails as usual that “The system in Washington is rigged.” The mailer features photos of Regular Iowans -- two elderly farmers in their respective cornfields, and one dad with a young girl in his arms.

Slightly more noteworthy is a fundraising letter from the Richardson campaign (.pdf) that, for all his play-nice appeals, appears to take some very veiled shots at Hillary Clinton. In asking for donations, Richardson invokes the “Swift Boating” of Kerry and warns, “We can’t nominate a candidate that Republicans can successfully poison for a majority of voters.” Later: “The outcome of this election is NOT inevitable … It IS possible to elect the most qualified candidate, not just the one who is the most well-known or well-funded.”

Richardson’s letter says that he’s raising money to help fund his new ads in the state, which he hopes to get “in front of half a million voters between now and January 3rd.”

“Together, we will shock the world,” he promises.

"and rails as usual "
Domenico, as an American citizen, you have the right to your opinion.  As a journalist, you don't have the right to shove your opinions down our throat.  It is a shame that you don't even try to be fair.
Come on. You call this a veiled shot a Hillary? If this is the worse thing said that could argueably apply to her, she has got it made. This story strikes me as completely over-analysing nothing. Sorry, but you need to look for a story which has at least a little meat to it.
I don't think this is directed at Clinton whatsoever. I think it's just a very general appeal for donations.
Many of us believe that the other Democratic candidates are much more vulnerable than Hillary Clinton. They basically already tried with her and failed.

As far as the well-funded, blah-blah-blah... if I'm remembering correctly, Obama is also well-funded.
who cares ?
'... It IS possible to elect the most qualified candidate, not just the one who is the most well-known or well-funded....'

He might have said the most 'Notorius'
It is a REAL SHOT at Hillary
She has no real experience
She's cold, calculating, dishonest and unethical
Why not select our best candidate ?

Obama/Edwards '08
Honesty counts
Integrity counts
I made the mistake of donating to Richardson in March, before I saw him debate, or perform poorly in Iowa. Since then I get 3-6 e-mails a week a week asking for money (two alone the day before thanksgiving) and at least one 4 single spaced small typeset letter begging for more money. His letter often have false statements, or very misleading statements about his poll numbers.

Here's todays plea for money:

Richardson for President, Inc,
________________________

Dear _____ (my name),

I just waved goodbye to the third vanload of volunteers leaving Albuquerque for Iowa today. Tomorrow we're sending more people to New Hampshire. They are all part of the plan we finalized over the weekend.

I don't know how much you paid attention over the holiday, but things have changed a lot since last Wednesday.

The race is flattening out. The poll numbers are in flux. And the only candidate who has gained consistently in all polls is Bill Richardson.

We're ramping up aggressively to pick up that momentum but we need $50,000 between now and Friday to cover the additional costs of shipping out the volunteers. Help us with $50, $100 or even $250 and watch the poll numbers move even more.

The Nation put it this way: "The action is with New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson."

"If the pattern holds, the New Mexican will easily overtake Edwards and could begin closing in on Obama by the time New Hampshire holds its first in the nation primary.

It is worth noting that, according to the polls, Richardson is now viewed as more experienced than either Obama or Edwards by the New Hampshire voters. His numbers are dramatically up in other categories, as well, especially on measures of trust -- the New Mexican now leads Clinton in this category.

Richardson's move into double digits in New Hampshire parallels his under-covered rise in the first caucus state of Iowa. While much of the discussion about recent polls from that state has focused on the news that Obama has moved narrowly ahead of Clinton -- they are actually in a statistical tie -- some of the most interesting movement in the first-caucus state has been toward Richardson."

Believe it, _____(my name).

Momentum like this can turn into a juggernaut with the right kind of push. We're already ahead of where Kerry was in 2004 -- and we're still moving up.

We're launching strong new ads in Iowa and New Hampshire. You can view them by clicking here.

Every time we've run new spots, our poll numbers have moved up. And we have every reason to expect it to happen again.

All of this will cost an additional $250,000. And we only have four days to raise it. Your $50, $100 or $250 makes a real difference in our ability to match the Clinton and Obama media machines.

Let me put it in perspective. Every one of these volunteers costs us $310 per week to house and feed. But that person is going to knock on hundreds of doors, distribute 1,000 pieces of literature, and talk to 2,500 voters. And with the $200,000 in new ads, some 50,000 more voters will hear our message.

You know that if we nominate the wrong Democrat, they're going to Swift Boat us all over again. And that means another George Bush in the White House.

Only strong action by determined Democrats can change that outcome.

I just got a phone call that one of our buses broke down just south of Wichita. I'm going to tell them that help is on the way.

Geeze Hillary, looks like everybody is po-ed at you. Bad time to have all this happening too with your poll numbers going in the dumper. You'll need to get your staffers to drag up some dirt on Obama. If you can't find any, just make it up, you know, the usual way you operate.
Is it possible for Senator Clinton to swift boat herself?
"rails as usual that “The system in Washington is rigged.”

Well? Do you deny it?
"rails as usual," ouch! I happen to agree with Edwards, the system is rigged...and I think the media system is rigged too...just by the way you are reporting this race, you are influencing the outcome, in my opinion.
So much for Richardson's shot at the VP slot.  Way to stay above the fray Bill.
Am I just being picky today or did the sentence about Senator Edwards that says he "railed as usual..... seem to have a negative bias?  Fairness seems to be taking a beating today.
Typical MSNBC, multimillionaire, jealous of the Clintons, woman hating, Crackpot Chris Matthews wannabe reporting.

You guys sound like Chicken Little in...the sky is falling, the sky is falling...on Hillary and everything and I mean everything you see is in someway anti Hillary or if it is not...you Crackpot Matthews wannabees twist it to make it so.

If not for Keith Oberman, a real journaolist, I'd never watch MSNBC again...just as well watch Fox.

Shame on you.  Crackpot Matthews and your network did the same thing to Al Gore and John Kerry while singing the praise of a "real" man... Bush who Matthews slobbered over (his "package" in his flight suit) and thought Bush was so likable...just wanted to have a beer with...a real president...a leader for CHANGE.

Look what we got.  And now Matthews has turned on Bush and is SO opposed to his war and policies.  Does Matthews ever admit that he was wrong?  That his nightly rantings encouraged people to hate Gore for reasons like he wore a 3 button suit?

NO and now Crackpot Matthews is off on his merry way to trashing Hillary for the same non issues.  Right now he praises Obama...but just wait until the GE.

Matthews is a not so closeted Republican who hates the entire Social Security system.  He doesn't need it, he's rich.

Voters...Democrats...are we going to let the Matthews of the world and all the little wannabees on First Read sucker punch us once again.?  They know Obama can't win in the GE and that Hillary is the one to beat.  So the Karl Rove strategy is illiminate Hillary now so Rudy can win.

We Democrats are so gullible and stupid.  Maybe we deserve President Rudy...just as we deserved Pres. Bush for allowing Matthews, First Read, and MSNBC to
see and say hatefilled things about Al Gore, John Kerry, and Hillary Clinton at every opportunity.
Domenico Montanaro...Crackpot Chris Matthews wannabee.

O-o-o-o...boogie man, Hillary Clinton is around every corner and no doubt EVERYTHING is her fault or can be tied into her...

Flat tire on my car...Hillary did it
Flat tire around my waist...Hillary made me eat too much.
Larry Craig likes men in public restrooms...yep...no doubt Hillary talked the poor man into it.

Shame on you Montanaro and Todd, too.  Even if Matthews finally cracks up and is put away for awhile, you wannabees will not get his job...so stop it and become responsible journalist for a change.
I get these mail pieces almost daily.  I got this labor-oriented Edwards one and another Edwards piece that was aimed at women was sent to my wife.

How would I go about submitting this sort of stuff to FirstRead?
Kevin is right, "and rails as usual" is completely inappropriate.  Some of us are happy that Edwards means what he says and won't back down his opposition against entrenched interests that are destroying our country.  Also, Edwards's mailer is going to many who don't follow the news every day and haven't heard his message.  Why is a mailer full of "bread and butter" less remarkable than a mailer that takes a "veiled shot" at another candidate.  We should be voting on the issues.
Richardson shots at Hillary?  Actually I thought it was a shot at Obama?

We know Senator Clinton is the most qualified.

Obama has the most money.

He is very well known.

I disagree with you...Richardson is talking about Obama not Senator Clinton.

After the debates, the blathering pundits say Richardson who got on to Obama for his mudslinging is going for a job with President Clinton 08.  Now you say he is attacking her.  Which is it?

Anything to attack Senator Clinton, I'd say.

I'm voting for experience, qualified, leadership.

HILLARY CLINTON 08
Hillary Clinton...the most qualified, experienced, ready to lead from day one, strong, intelligent candidate.

I don't want another George Bush...what did they say about him 7-8 years ago...
    He's so likeable
    He's so honest
He can bring our country together
He has more experience than Gore even if it is
       in Texas.
    He's a uniter not a divider
    He's for change
He's not involved in Washington polotics
He's not owned by the cooperate world
The media and pundits put all their weight behind him.  They vilified Gore not on issues but on inane silly non issues.

In the words of Ronald Reagan...here we go again.  Just substitute Obama's name for Bush above and does this all sound familiar...again?

Does this sound familiar...just change

Hillary Clinton is dishonest according nto Serria.

What about Obama's dishonesty as he mud slings.

On Nightlline last night:

TERRY MORAN:
So lets talk experience which you talk about a lot.
You said recently that the strongest experience you have in foreign relations is that you grew up for 4 years as a child in southeast Asia.

OBAMA:  Well that's not exactly what I said.  What I said was I think one of the thins that sets me apartr is that I spent time in other countries.

EXACT OBAMA QUOTE:
"Probably the strongest experience I have in foreign relations is the fact that I spent four years living overseas when I was a child in southeast Asia."

Obama is not owning up to what he actually said...dishonest...I'd say so.

Hillary Clinton...the most honest, qualified, experienced, strong, intelligent leader
It's rainning today...God is taking a shot at Hillary Clinton.  Sounds like the MSNBC stable is reporting the "news" again.
Domenico Montanaro, isn't there any real news for you to write about?  How badly you must hate Clinton.
Did you go to the same journalism school as Chris Matthews?
Couldn't agree with you more Serra about MSNBC's so called reporting about Hillary Clinton.

I think they are just violently jealous of Bill Clinton and it all spills over onto Hillary.

If she were John Doe, senator from New York with all that experience and leadership, the MSNBC crowd would love "him".

Guys, get over your jealousy of Bill...no matter what that nutcase on Hardball says.  Matthews is going to have to get help with that jealousy/anger issue with Bill and Hillary or he is going to explode. Meds, counseling or intervention for Chris, maybe???
"'... It IS possible to elect the most qualified candidate, not just the one who is the most well-known or well-funded....'"

I'm sorry sierra but if you don't believe you are the best person and most qualified to be president you shouldn't be in the race.  Can we argue that Bill is neither the most well known or well funded.  No those are facts.  He's saying my qualifications are better than anyone elses and I can win the race give me some money to compete.

That's hardly an attack. His campaign has had basic themes in terms of most electable, red state governor diplomat cabinet secretary congressman.

Standard election fare fundraiser letter.

I'm the best those ahead of me aren't they are just better known or better funded.  Blah blah blah.  I've received dozens if not hundreds in my lifetime.  It's not attacking It's saying I'm the best.  Which if they decided to run they better believe.
"veiled shot" Oh please! What media hype that is. Pretty mild stuff I'd say. You go Gov. Richardson. You are the most qualified candidate.
Bill who? Oh yeah, I know that guy. He's the only Democratic candidate whose "plan" for Iraq makes even less sense than George Bush's....
Okay, the Hillary supporters must be back on the meth again, lol. Looks like one of them was actually having a conversation with himself above.
Anyone looking for some new Hillary video from an SC stop and an interesting commentary on how race is impacting that primary should try: http://goupstate.us/index.php/lanefiller/2007/11/27/hillary_and_the_black_men_of_god
I liked the video of Hillary & the men of GOD! Note that I did not mention race, because it doesn.t matter
I Obama stood before 50m white men of God , nothing would ever be said of it!!!
"veiled shot" Oh please! What media hype that is. Pretty mild stuff I'd say. You go Gov. Richardson. You are the most qualified candidate.

Michele Smith, Burton MI

Actually First Read didn't include the inserts, just the cover letter. One of the inserts (3 pages of inserts total) that specifically named Hillary and basically said she  can't win due to her negatives.
