Edwards rallies with striking workers

Posted: Tuesday, November 27, 2007 3:47 PM by Mark Murray

From NBC's Lauren Appelbaum
Once again, Edwards joined the striking Writers Guild and other union members in solidarity, after marching with the the WGA members in Burbank earlier this month. Although he spoke for less than four minutes, the union members rallied around the presidential candidate, yelling out encouraging words.

"The truth is, [unions are] crucial for the future of America," Edwards said in New York City's Washington Square Park. "It is why, when I'm president of the United States, when you're out walking the picket line, nobody will be able to walk through that picket line and take your job away from you. You're going to have a president who actually stands with you, when you're working, when you're collectively bargaining, when you're standing up for workers, yourself, and fellow workers across this country."

Before leaving the rally, Edwards had a message for the union members on strike. "I'm proud to be with you; stay strong," he said to an increasing amount of cheers. "Stay strong. Stay together. You're doing the right thing. Continue to do the right thing."

After he finished speaking at the rally, Edwards held an availability with reporters, who had to strain to hear him since the rally was still going on. Answering a question about how the African-American vote seems split between Clinton and Obama -- but not Edwards -- the former North Carolina senator said nothing is wrong. "I think people in New York and across America, and in the African-American community, just need to hear my message," he replied.

"Jesse Jackson wrote about this in the last 24 hours," he added, referring to Jackson's Chicago Sun-Times column (that the Edwards campaign sent to reporters), in which he said that all the Democratic presidential candidates, save Edwards, have ignored the plight of African Americans. "It is the cause of my life to end poverty in this country. And it is the cause I have spoken about ... doing something about two Americas... We've been dealing with a lot of celebrity and glitz lately in this campaign. And the closer we get to the actual election, with people caucusing and casting their votes, more likely they are going to vote for someone with substance who's actually ready to deal with the things they've been talking about."

Another reporter asked Edwards if Bush should be leaning harder on Israel to negotiate at the meeting in Annapolis. Edwards did not directly answer the question and instead attacked Bush on waiting so long to act. "What the President should have been doing is he should have been engaged in this on the last several years," he said. "It's been a very sporadic distant engagement with the Israeli-Palestinian issue. And I'm glad that the President is going to take some action but it's awful late in his second term."

Well, thank you Lauren Applebaum, for reporting on Edwards and the real issues. Its stunning to realize Israel and the Palestinians haven't haven't come to the table to negotiate in seven years.
It would be amamzing to have, finally, a President on the side of the American workers, one who actually cares for the struggling middle class and the poor. Go Edwards!
Where is your coverage of Obama's 3 hr foreign policy forum in NH this morning?????

from Bill Clinton's administration: former national security adviser Tony Lake, former Navy secretary Richard Danzig and former assistant secretary of State for African affairs Susan Rice.

"I cannot understand why he is attacked for a lack of experience," Lake told an audience of 150 before Obama arrived after touring a nearby Naval facility. Obama is older than Bill Clinton was when inaugurated, Lake said, and probably has more foreign policy experience than presidents Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, Clinton and the current president had when they took office. (from AP)

There was a time when the Democratic party was about unions and the working man
No more

The DLC sold the Democratic party out to lobbyists and corporations

Now is the time to take back our Democratic party
No more slick talking con men (Bill + Al + Joe Lieberman) or con women (Hillary)

Let's have a REAL DEMOCRAT !!
John Edwards fits the bill !!

Edwards/Obama '08
Honesty counts
Integrity counts

What A phoney. This guy is For trade before he is against, same goes for taxes, universal health, the war. I truly loathe this phoney. He is the democrat Mitt Romney.
Well I am glad at least one of the candidates has the Writers' Guild's backs on this, for their sake. The studios have done the dirty on the writers for far too long. Hopefully a GOP'er funning for President can come out next and give them some cross party support.  Sounds like an idea for Fred Thompson if there ever was one.
Edwards would get more attention if the media would quit shoving Obama and Hillary in our ffffaces.Same with Guilliani and Romney----egads there are more than 4 people running for the presidential primary

dobie \ maybe you should roll up the next one a little smaller, your minds gone chief
Hey, dobie,

Anytime someone uses the word "phony" to describe John Edwards, smart people recognize that person using that phrase as a braindead zombie who just repeats what they have heard someone in the media say or someone like Rush Limbaugh, or that it's that person's job to push that meme.
Where are the other presidential candidates? Why are they only giving lip service to the strikers? They are trying to benefit from the WGA strike while refusing to help in any way.

Where are the other presidential candidates on the Broadway stagehands strike? Edwards is on the record as supporting them but nothing from the other two front runners. I've read that Obama & Clinton are silent because the Broadway producers are a powerful fundraising group that will make them pay if they support the stagehands. I think MSNBC should check this out and ask Clinton & Obama why they are not supporting the stagehands in their strike?

The others are great at talking the talk but they sure aren't very good at walking the walk.
Finally, someone has the guts to stand up for the little people.  This is why Edwards deserves a fair look by primary voters.  He's definately winning the argument on this issue. BIG time.
While I don't think John Edwards is a phony, one has to wonder why he supports people who write fiction.
Trade, Taxes, Universal Healthcare and National Security. I don't think there is 1 American who is against any of these ideals. What they are against is not using your brain when trying to address these serious matters. In other words, The GOP approach of brute, force and ignorance is a joke. Dobie!!!!
"People who write fiction," Jerry...you mean, like the current occupant of the White House and his advisors, who brought us the bestseller SADDAM HUSSEIN IS A VERY BAD MAN WHO'S PROBABLY RESPONSIBLE FOR 9/11, NUKES, AND A WHOLE BUNCH OF OTHER STUFF WE'LL GET BACK TO YOU ABOUT?
Check John Edwards voting record and stances when he was in the US Senate.  He was not as pro-union and in fact he did not oppose the Right to Work law in North Carolina and refused to advocate its repeal.
He is still in the race?
dobe - I am with you, Edwards is a phoney like Mitt "I am better for gays than Ted Kennedy" Romney. Sadly Mitt, you are no Ted Kennedy.
This is a thank you to Tim Robbins and Kevin Bacon for bringing attention to the Edwards campaign.  Lets see if their efforts will be covered in the main stream media.
