Romney's 'debate prep' football game

From NBC/NJ's Erin McPike
ST. PETERSBURG, FL -- Sure, there are the meetings behind closed doors for prep on the day of a debate, but Romney also played in a flag football game here with his five sons and a handful of his campaign staffers.

After one play, Romney ran down the field yelling, "This is not tackle, this is not tackle!"

Covered in sweat, he was swarmed by reporters before leaving the game about halfway through. He explained that it "makes all the difference" on the trail if he can have his wife, Ann, or even one of the five sons with him. He's got the whole family in tow for tonight's debate, and they will be seated in the front row-ahead of Giuliani's family. "Ann is really the one who keeps me from going off the edge of the road. She's the guardrail in our family," he said.

When most of the players thought the game was over, it was Romney's oldest son, Tagg, who kept reminding them all that they still had the second half to go. But before the sons re-took the field without their father, they spoke with reporters and talked Iowa. "The five of us will each take turns being there a lot in the next few weeks," Tagg said.

St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Baker and several top Romney staffers played in the flag football game, including Carl Forti and Ben Ginsberg. Communications Director Matt Rhoades was told he was kicked off his team to make room for the much taller mayor. Who didn't play in the game? Kevin Madden. He is in town for the debate but was nowhere to be found at the game.

This draft dodger's sons should be fighting in Iraq!
WHEWW!!
I sure feel safe knowing that the Romey boys are at Mitt's side. I am so glad they didn't join the military and go to war. Just think how unsafe this country would be if they weren't here in America reinforcing "Daddy's" campaign, but in Iraq fighting in a war "Daddy" and his party whole heartedly support. That's the ticket Romney boys, let the poor and middle-class kids do the easy stuff (like going to war), you guys stick around and do the hard work (like playing tag football with "Daddy"). You guys are truly doing your duty.
Iowans would rather a couple of Mitt's five sons spend some time in Iraq, so a couple of Iowa boys can come home and cease this endless redeployment. But that's not going to happen, is it? Just some Kennedy-esque Flag Football in an IED-free environment. What does Mitt have to say about continued redeployment and this endless Iraq War?
I can see you vietnam vets still forget that today's military is all volunteer.
Sorry to break the news to you all, but THERE IS NO DRAFT!  Mitt Romney is what America needs now.  With the way the economy is going I want a smart business man running the largest business in the world, America.
Jimmy Chi all of us are paying taxes so that the fearless leader can offer a signing bonus of $1ooo per month to lure the children of the poor into the meat grinder of Iraq. If Mitt's sons and all other able bodied chicken hawks who support the war would enlist it would show that they REALLY love their country and at the same time would help in lowering the deficit.
It's called putting your money where your mouth is..if you are running for office and support the war your son if of age should be fighing there!  Period.
"I can see you vietnam vets still forget that today's military is all volunteer. "

Really makes it obvious who the chicken hawks are.

Vote Mitt Romney - helping keep a disadvantaged class to fight wars so his kids can play football.

"A war for our very survival." I'm so stupid, I believe this. I also believe (at the same time) it's NO BIG DEAL!
Steve, Jimmy & Pat, Are you grown men or 10 year olds on a playground!!! Go look yourselves in the mirror and ask yourselves these simple questions. "Have I done any good in the world TODAY, Have I helped anyone in need, cheered up the sad or made someone feel glad????"
There are many many ways to serve your country to make it what it is.
We are active duty, and we could care less how they serve only that that can answer yes to everyone of those questions, Everyday!
So get up off your butt and do your part.
So you served years ago, that's nice, what have you done lately?
Be offended if you like, but the bottom line is these are good honest happy successful people that have one desire. To serve their fellow men.
They are a shining example of how it could be.
Lighten up...
... gather your children and go play some ball.
What type of offense were they running? Who was the quarterback? Were they playing man or zone defense? These details could provide vital clues into their campaign strategy! Where's the post-game analysis?
The point is not that Mitt's sons don't have to volunteer. It is that if the war is so vital, one would expect it impressed upon his family and they would feel there is no option but to volunteer.
In the heels of that awful Iowa poll this morning, Romney gets good news from a South Carolina survey that has him leading a very fractured field: http://www.campaigndiaries.com/2007/11/presidential-diary-michigan-mess-and.html
The family that plays football together is the family that pats each others butts together, how kennedy of them. Mitt may end up winning by playing the good candidate, Rudy will fall into the trap and become the attack weasel candidate, McCain may gain from the love lost between Mitt and Rudy, Fred will tune into a local radio program and fade away like an old TV tube, at first a bright and shiny light on the hill and then a flicker and then another flicker and then a blank picture tube. Tancredo tanks in Iowa, Ron Paul makes a fourth place showing and George will find more compassion-like photo ops to make his symbolic presidency seem the greatest thing since chocolate milk.

I've done many good things today for my fellow man...I even gave change to a homeless person on the street at lunch!

The sad reality is that there are people dying needlessly over in Iraq, and this guy, Mitty, has his sons safely over here, yet screams at Dems for attacking the war.  He's a flip flopping freak show and a big hypocrit.
A GOPer businessman running the war. All the profiteers will vote for him. Keep that tax dollar trough full.
You'ld have to dig alot deeper to serve to the extent of the Romney's, pocket change does not cut it. And Money has nothing to do with it.

You talk out of both sides of you mouth. "He's a flip flopper who will say and do anything for the nomination." If that were true, you'ld already have shipped one of his sons off to boot camp.

Promise to cut and run...

Dump his religion, morals and wife...

Why can we not see the good? Is it becasue it is so rare anymore.

I would be interested to know if any of the ones criticizing Mitt's sons have volunteered for military service?  Do you really think that firing off emails from your Mac somehow replaces the fact that you haven't served in the military either?  Or are you just bothered because your Dad isn't around to play football with you?
There are more ways to serve your country than joining the military.  If all those that loved there country went to fight in Iraq, we would be hurting here more than we already are.  We need some here helping with our country's other problems.
I would love to serve in the military...but....a certain rule would have to be changed...they don't want my kind...so they can piss off!

"I would be interested to know if any of the ones criticizing Mitt's sons have volunteered for military service?"

Yup.

Do you really think that firing off emails from your Mac somehow replaces the fact that you haven't served in the military either?"

Oh, but I have, fearless chicken hawk and fearless defender of chicken hawks. And it's a PC.

"Or are you just bothered because your Dad isn't around to play football with you? "

I'm bothered he's wasn't rich enough to buy an NFL team, so his kids served. What's your excuse?
TS Beavercreek keep talking mabe you will convince yourself that yo are not a slacker that doesn't love his country but loves what his country can do for him>
How dare people criticize Mitt Romney and his sons as being draft dodgers. There is no evidence that any of them have ever attempted to avoid being drafted. When his children were of age, THERE WAS NO DRAFT. How many other politicians children are in the military. Out of those running for president, the only candidates with children overseas are John McCain, Duncan Hunter, and Joe Biden. I dont see all those criticizing Romney also criticizing the rest of the field with eligible children that are not in the military. Get over your self-righteous selves.
I want to know how many of those complaining about Mitt's sons not being in the military really understand what they are complaining about.  This war is a religious war, it will not be won in the traditional sense of the word, it is about maintaining oil and the right of Jews around the world to claim what they believe is rightfully theirs, those of you who have served in the military in the past "doth protest too much."  Do we want the holocaust to continue, do we want the Asian Nations to complete the job Hitler and his Satraps tried during World War II, do all the Holocaust memorials only give lip service to the rights of Jews to have their home land.

In addition, all this soldiers who are fitting did volunteer to take a steady pay check from you, based off of your taxes.  IF they are reserves or not shouldn't matter, they signed on and they have been called to keep their obligations.
You neocons can excuse any breath-takingly hypocritical actions of your fellow Nazis.

I don't give a GD if there's a draft or not - supporting a war you keep your kids safe from SUCKS! And the candidate IS a draft dodger!  A yellow-bellied, cowardly chicken hawk DRAFT DODGER. No need to tell any of you to "get over your self-righteous selves" - you hypocrites haven't taken a look inside since you wept for Nixon. About the same time you divorced yourselves from truth, reality and reason.
"Josh, Salt Lake City, Utah", you miss the point, buddy. We're not taling about the draft. In a volunteer army, those that vigorously support the war - like Romney - at hand could reasonably be expected to put their money where their mouth is.

If you think the war is wrong (for whatever reason), why sign up? For the "glory"? Who wants to die for something in which they don't believe?
Hey moron there isnt a draft anymore. The United States military is all volunteer, and I thank the men and women who do. All of you who have criticized the Romney boys- Did you or your sons serve?
Mitt Romney is a great leader. Just because he loves his family, that is hypocritical? Because he DID serve in the 60's . He just did not serve the Dem's god:money. He served all humankind's God.He clearly loves his family. Most of America can identify with the same feelings. God, Country, and Family-
It appears that many forget that Mitt's sons are adults and make their own choices and decisions. To imply Mitt wouldn't be a good president because his son's have chosen not to enter the military is akin to saying all these complainers' parents would make good presidents because their children choose to make irrationale statements. I thought forcing children, even adult children, into military duty went out years ago..... I find it refreshing that Mitt raised his children to make their own decisions. What was the last job you forced your children into?
Last time I checked we didn't have a draft. The people in the military are there because they are active service or because they are in the National Guard and actually have to pay something back to the country for their free college.
It's the oldest trick in the book. If you cant insult a man....Insult his family. Grow Up !
Not all presidents make good soldiers, not all soldiers make good presidents.  That doesn't mean that one is less loyal to their country.  They are both important in the roles they train for.

Whether or not we agree with the war, no one forced our young men into the military.  There are in fact many avenues to achieve life's goals.

Mitt Romney has proven his abilities as a capable financial leader. Many forget the success he achieved in his home state. Our country desparately needs that leadership right now. Wouldn't we all be lucky to feel the pride of a loving family. Many of our society's problems could be alleviated if we followed his example - and maybe played a bit more football with our children.
Hey, Did Hillery serve in the Army? or good old husband Bill or Obama?  Why not? I suppose since Hillary did not serve in the military she will be a Great Leader. HA HA.
"It's the oldest trick in the book. If you cant insult a man....Insult his family. Grow Up !"  Ditto, Trike.  And along the same lines as "db", yes there are other ways to serve your country and our fellow citizens of this world.  Mitt and every one of his 5 sons served (voluntarily, I might add) people of this country and of a number of other countries by spreading a message of peace and love...the love of God.  If you guys can't accept the fact that they just happen to be good people, then it's too bad you suffer from such desensitized moral states.
You know who the Clintons fear the most?  Mitt Romney because there is nothing about him they can smear.  Oh, by the way, Mitt Romney is the most qualified to return America's image and standing in the world - don't forget his leadership pulled off one of the most successful Winter Olympics ever.  If draft dodging and flip flopping are the best you have, keep trying.
Mitt Romney is such a slime ball I am surprised he did not slip off the podium. His answer on water boarding was disgusting.
The Romney's income taxes helped paid for our soldiers' expenses, among other things. I know he is a great leader for his family and for his country as well. I am Mr. Romney's supporter forever!
You all act like Romney's sons volunteering is his decision. His sons have the freedom to choose for themselves.
Why don't we all just grow up and have a decent debate without all the name-calling and animosity?

If any of the Mitt attackers really knew anything about the kind of man he is they would talk a different story.
I hope Mr. Romney stretched properly before playing. I pulled my hamstring playing in my church's annual Turkey Bowl on Thanksgiving because I didn't stretch and now I walk funny. I too am disappointed that there wasn't any game stats recorded that would give us an idea of what kind of athlete he is.
I really don't understnad why people think that Mitt's sons should be fighting in the war. It's THEIR life, THEIR choice, not their father's or anybody elses. Lay off!
How refreshing that Mitt would spend time with his sons playing some football.  He shows balance in all the important aspects of life and, for those who understand him, is clearly the candidate of choice to lead our great nation.  One of the most essential needs of this country is families who spend time together.
Mitt is the man for american today. Mitt Romney is what America needs now.  With the way the economy is going I want a smart business man running the largest business in the world, America. And it would be good to have a man with morels in the office. I am a Vietnam vet. I too served my country.
better to fight then there then in your back yard. Think about it.
to Rose Ann Ford--
If any one of my children were taken by terrorists, I would stop at nothing to get information from THOSE "slime balls" (jhihadists)---even if it meant water bogging or WHATEVER!
A President should feel the same way--for in essence, he is responsible for all of our children.
We are not dealing with other soldiers here--we are dealing with TERRORISTS who will stop at nothing to destroy us--  Don't you get it?
KEEP IN MIND
THE VILAGE RAISES THE CHILDREN
SO LOOK AT YOURSELVES AND ASK
WE MUST HAVE FAILED
ALL THE CHILDREN DIDN'T  LINE UP TO JOIN THE MILITARY
All these people criticizing others for not serving in the military are complete morons.  You really are.  I love and appreciate the people who are serving in this war, but it is not for me.  I have family members there, one in fact just got home from Iraq where he was sent out to find all the mines and bombs left out to kill people.  He is serving well, but some people are not right for the job, and others are serving our country in amazing ways.  I agree with everyone who has said that joining the army was not Mitt's choice for his sons, they made their own choice, and that doesn't make you less American or mean that you love your country any less.  Mitt is one of the greatest candidates that has ever run for presidency he has answers to every problem facing America.  If he doesn't win the election, it is going to be an incredible mistake on our nations part.  If we give this country to Hillary Clinton I will move to Canada.  Mitt is the most qualified in every aspect, he can do wonders for our economy, he wants to lower candidates, strengthen our military so that everyone knows not to mess with our country, and strengthen our moral and family values.  Making this a strong independant country like it should be, like it was before, because family values were the most important.  Mitt is the man for the job.
