Jerry Falwell Jr. endorses Huckabee

Posted: Wednesday, November 28, 2007 4:40 PM by Mark Murray

From NBC contributor Jenny Anzelmo and NBC's Lauren Appelbaum
LYNCHBURG, VA -- After Huckabee delivered an address at the evangelical Liberty University here, he picked up an endorsement from Jerry Falwell, Jr., the son of the school's late founder. “My father supported Huckabee before he was number two in the polls,” Falwell said. “We’re just proud, honored to have you here.”

Falwell was not expecting to endorse Huckabee today, but when put on the spot, he did. “He’s my choice, yes,” Falwell said to cheers from students and a smile from Huckabee. While Falwell called Huckabee his “close friend,” he also said Thompson would have been good choice.

While this is a personal endorsement and not an endorsement from the university, it is valuable as Huckabee’s campaign continues to grow momentum heading into tonight’s debate. Huckabee’s poll numbers have tripled since July, and the latest Washington Post/ABC poll shows him at 24% in Iowa, just behind Romney's 28%.

In terms of endorsements, Thompson has the nod from National Right to Life, and Giuliani has Pat Robertson’s support. Huckabee, who is running on the Christian conservative platform, now has this endorsement to add to the mix.

As mentioned earlier, Huckabee’s opponents have been attacking his gubernatorial record, especially when it comes to taxes and immigration. In light of closing in on front-runner status, Huckabee expects there to be “a lot more venom pointed my way” in tonight’s CNN/YouTube debate. “I’ll defend myself, but I don’t think my job is to go and pop somebody in the kneecap,” he said. “People don’t want a president because he has disabled the other candidates. They want a president who’s looking at the future and has a vision for America.”

On the issue of electability, Huckabee continued to stress his appeal to the “ordinary American” and called himself the only candidate who “has faced and defeated the Clinton political machine four times.” When asked a question on Bill Clinton saying he “opposed Iraq from the beginning” in South Carolina yesterday, Huckabee declined to comment but made it clear he thinks Hillary Clinton will be the Democratic nominee.

“I plan to run against her, not him,” he responded. “She’ll be my opponent, not him. And we’ll have plenty of time to discuss it. But there will be enough fun having the Democrats sort out his statements without me jumping in the middle of it. I’ve got my own tank to swim in right now.”

The Liberty students received Huckabee well. When asked why younger voters should support him, Huckabee called himself a “vertical thinker” and said younger people are “more interested in what you going to do.” As evidence of this youth support, after the endorsement, many Liberty University students asked fellow classmates to sign a petition for Huckabee to be on the Virginia ballot. Liberty student Kate Rundele said she agrees “with him on pretty much everything” and stressed the importance of having a Christian president -- even taking the opportunity to say Mitt Romney does not fall in this category. Josh Covert, another student, said the prospect of Romney becoming president is “a scary situation.” They both stressed their beliefs that Romney would push a Mormon agenda on the American public.

Liberty University has yet to give an official endorsement, but the LU board of directors has voiced their support for the governor. Jerry’s brother Jonathan Falwell has also given Huckabee a personal endorsement.

Forty-eight percent (48%) of Evangelical Christians support Hucakbee. That"s more than all the other candidates combined. Romney attracts 16% of the Evangelical vote. This is unlikely to New Hampshire.

In your opinion do you believe the Iowa Caucus is important or a true representation of national consensus?

.
Why should I care what Jerry Falwell Jr. thinks?
well, the barakist keep saying that obama will win iowa ..
huckabee and obama... a matched set.
Huckabee's forgetting one thing.  As Chris Matthews says, Republicans like a leader and a tough guy.  Meaning in Republican circles that the nice guy rarely finishes first.  I will be impressed if your positive message will take off in that circle.  But since I'm not a true Republican, I like your demeanor.  Mr. Matthews is fair, tough on all the candidates, and people need to focus more on their candidates than the pundits/moderators.
Is this turning into a God Vs. God race? Can Pat Robertson's God beat Jerry Falwell's God?

If God can do anything, can he create a evangelical Christian so obnoxious that even He can't stand him?
I believe the Iowa Caucus is an important measure of support for individual candidates by those within their party most comitted to working for an electoral victory.  Because it measures support from the most committed within the party it is an important measure of who will best mobilize the kind of "feet on the pavement, knock on doors" support that wins elections.  In this particular case I believe we're seeing that the people who man phone banks and pass out campaign literature to win elections for the GOP are Evangelical Christians.  I don't believe that any caucus or primary is indicative of national consensus.
DUH!!!
Romney would push a Mormon agenda on Americans?  I'm a Mormon and have no idea what is on a Mormon agenda?  What are they teaching at Liberty?  I think they are making stuff up and hope no one is going to actually look into these aspersions.  Will someone tell me what is on our Agenda?

There really isn't one, but if there was, I would imagine it listed religious freedom, limited government, ethical representatives and judges, pro-family legislation, etc.  Yeah, I'm one conservative ready to push stuff like that on America.
If God can do anything, can he create a evangelical Christian so obnoxious that even He can't stand him?

Well, he's not evangelical - but I can assure you that the current "President" of our country is nowhere near the top of the Big Guy's list of best worshipers of Him.
I really just don't get why any Evangelical Christian would support Romney.  The Mormon religion is clearly not Christian, but a cult.  They have great family values and are good people for the most part but their beliefs are downright odd.  I am not an Evangelical but I really thought they wanted someone who represented their beliefs running the country.  Huckabee is the obvious choice for them, it seems like they are finally figuring it out, most likely it is too late but you never know.
My opinion of Huckabee just dropped. I'm against anyone these religous freaks and wingnuts are for. I think we will see in the upcoming election that they don't have the power they think they have. God help us if they ever gain control of anything.
Huckabee is my guy!!!!!!
Huckabee only wants to "look to the future" because his past is so spotty.  Well guess what?  You are now a contender Huckabee and you are going to have to block those punches that are coming because you DO have a spotty ethics problem and tax increase problem.  You just can't wish those things way...
who is falwell jr?is he the same as oral roberts jr?Sorry ---not interested in their opinions.Look what happened last time
Just askin':

That's the funniest thing I've heard all day. Good stuff.
Huckabee has been gaining supporters and losing pounds while Guiliani gains wives, Romney gains "new perspectives" and Ron Paul loses HIS MIND. And Fred looks like he his ready to have his pills and a nap.
I SO AGREE HucAKEBEE 4 PREZZ BRING BACK XTIAN AMERICA
FAIR TAX is the new and much improved tax increase that taxes legal and illegal immigrants the same as it does the rest of us yahoo's. NO to abortion. No to gay rights. No to slamming his competitors. Theirs limbs will blossum and show their true colors. Yes to Huckabee!!!
Well, I've been waiting. Now that I know who has Jerry's blessing, my wait is over. Without Jerry to tell what God wants, I would be lost, OH, so lost.

You know, it worked last time. Jerry picked that lovely George guy. My, but didn't THAT work out SO WELL!!!
It's unfortunate that Alan Keyes hasn't received media attention yet. He's definitely a threat to Mike Huckabee!
Bill says: Hillary spent a year after graduation working on a children's rights project for poor kids.
The facts are: Hillary interned with Bob Truehaft, the head of the California Communist Party. She met Bob when he represented the Panthers and traveled all the way to San Francisco to take an internship with him. Do we really want a preident like this??
