A tale of two debate halves

Posted: Wednesday, November 28, 2007 9:55 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ's Erin McPike
There's a big difference in Mitt Romney's performance from the first half to the second half of the debate.

In the first, he was on fire -- firing away at both Giuliani and Huckabee on immigration and spending and striking blows.

During the second half, he's looked far less sure of himself, hesitating on the question about the Bible, twisting the question to fit his answer on black-on-black crime and trying to talk his way around whether gays should serve openly in the military.

They All twisted the questions to fit their answers. Mitt Romney held his own, as did Thompson and Huckabee. Rudy Guiliani is the second worse public speaker, next to Dubya.
Thank you MSNBC for fairly reporting this. To name just a few true colors, Romney obviously wants to keep Guantanamo Bay in operation, would not agree with the Geneva Convention concerning waterboarding and torture, hedged terribly on the question of believing the Bible, (he cannot agree with LDS AND Bible-believing America, both, at the same time, in front of GOD and everybody concerning belief in the Bible which says there is Only One GOD and LDS who teach Romney will be a god), and he would not give a solid answer on if he still agrees with himself on looking forward to the day Gays could openly serve in the military.
I would say that people should get their facts straight, I know a lot of LDS people and they do believe in the Bible, and live it better than a lot of people I know. If people can't even do the research to get the facts straight about a large religion, I don't think their opinion should be trusted on judging and researching a presidential candidate.
I guess I would disagree with this assessment, because I thought Romney's whole night was poor.  I have not paid a lot of attention to the Republican race, but after watching this, I do not believe that Mitt is presidential.  Despite what the first poster said, I thought Giuliani did well the whole night (after he got through with his ridiculous illegal immigrant shot at Romney anyway).  He seemed less interested than the others in throwing out red meat lines for audience applause.  The entire primary season I've been afraid of a Clinton - Giuliani presidential race, at least now I don't think I will abstain from voting if that unfortunately does come to fruition.
I agree with you Anderson, Mitt did very poor. He did not demonstrate the ability to stick to a position. He appears afraid to go against the grain and he changes his position on many different issues when it is convenient. (Abortion, Gays in the military, the Bible, ...really just about everything.) He appears he is afraid to speak HIS mind...I guess he can always rely on his advisors to tell him how to view abortion and gays in the military.
The only reason people persist in making an issue of Romney's Latter-day Saint faith is because, since it's beginning, preachers have bad mouthed Mormons for fear of losing their congregations to a religion that offers greater substance.  It becomes more and more clear that most "Christians" don't know a whole lot about the Bible or how it even came to be, yet they're constantly claiming things they think the Bible says based on their pastor's opinion.  Mick might want to reread the part in the Bible when Jesus is baptized.  "This is my beloved Son...."  Sounds like God the Father and his Godly Son to me.  Two not one.  I especially love it when Christians try and hold the long gone practice of polygamy against Mormons, when the Bible, their own religious history contains it as well.  Comments from people like Mick, make it more than obvious that not only does he not know a whole lot about the Bible, but he also is very likely a fair weather follower of Christian beliefs.  The fact is, an active Mormon for President, especially one as skilled in business and government as Romney, is an excellent option because he holds himself to a far higher standard of conduct than most people.  Maybe instead being so concerned with the tenants of our candidates religion, we should be more concerned with their moral conduct or lack thereof.
Romney was terrible. They were all terrible on the don't ask, don't tell policy. What on earth did they mean by "it works"??? How does it work? Gays are already serving in the military, and openly...wake up people! Basically one idiot said that the military is full of conservative christians....so why don't we just have a christian military? They don't want to offend anyone having to work with people who are gay? give me a break. DA,DT is on its way out the door...give it 15 years....oh yeah - keep voting for your "christian" president....don't bother thinking about how logical they are....congratulations on voting for the idiot, GW......TWICE!
Huckabee won Hands down. He is the most articulate, humble, real candidate out of all of them-after all the verbal stumbles of the Bush presidency we have finally discovered someone who can communicate republican principles with wit & wisdom. McCain came out ok. Romney just got a beating..wow..definitely NOT his night. I wonder what Hugh Hewitt and all those who were so ready to give Romney the mantle of conservatism are doing after this one. HUCKABEE is a force to be contended with, and tonight he showed WHY he is on the rise in Iowa. The Underdog is poised to take a bite out of Rudy McRomney on Jan 3rd. The others were all a distant..3rd...Duncan Hunter had some ok stuff and Fred is frankly coming across as kinda like..hey man ..someone please pick me for VP so I can sport my hot wife around DC. And what was with the INQUISTION Style question the crackpot youtuber asked about the Bible(As if he has ever read it) (and all the man on man gay questions...and the rebel flag...weird..there had to be some better questions that those...but wow did the gays in the military question make Romney look like a TOTAL flip flopper...what a bad night for him.
Why is no one asking what to me is an obvious question? Why was Mitt Romney forced to make an answer about the Bible when Mike Huckabee was allowed to give a joking reply to the question about what would Jesus do? I saw this several times this evening. I am so disgusted with the YouTube debates. Important questions that could have helped voters get a true understanding of the issues were passed by in favor of questions designed to enhance ratings for CNN. Don't they understand we want to see serious debates, not this high school mentality debate forum?
I actually thought Romney was head and shoulders above Rudy.

Why is it that no matter what Rudy says or does or how silly his answers are in debates, the "pundits" almost always say he won.

Is this election already a done deal? The media seem like chickens who pick one chicken to peck and will continue until that little chicken is dead.

I see what they are doing to Romney.  Crackpot Chris Matthews is once again the lead chicken.

And by the way, after his love fest with George Bush in the last two elections and the way the Bush presidency has turned out, why is anyone listening to a man like Matthews who obviously has poor judgement and is unwell?

I thought Romney was just fine in the debate tonight and if Crackpot Matthews is going after him..then I'm for Romney.

Madeliene, would you like to discuss doctrine? How many years have you studied, indepth, the Bible or LDS scripture? Are you LDS to know what LDS teach? You sound as though you might want to research a little more before you start. It is always interesting to see how accusations are made based on assumptions, knowing nothing about me.

What part of the Bible are your LDS friends living better than others (the part --where satan lies-- that they can become a god)? (eg Genesis 3:5--satan's lie/eg LDS Doctrine and Covenants 132 and throughout LDS teachings--LDS becoming gods/godwives). Are they also familiar/do they 'believe' the part where this attitude sends Lucifer, himself to hell? eg Isaiah 14)

Bible-believers are MONOTHEISTIC. The Bible teaches there is Only One true Living GOD, all else are false gods (eg Deuteronomy 4:39; Isaiah 44-46 and throughout).

LDS are POLYTHEISTIC. LDS teach there are many gods, that LDS Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, David, Solomon etc. are LDS gods, and LDS, also, may become gods/godwives (eg LDS Abraham 4, Doctrine and Covenants 132).

How do your friends coincide worship of LDSgod whose name is "Man," who is a god of flesh and bones tangible as man's (eg LDS Moses 6:57,7:35; Doctrine and Covenants 130:22)// with GOD of the Bible, Who is Spirit(eg John 4:24)?

Or worship of LDSchrist who is "Spirit-BROTHER OF LUCIFER," whose name is "Ahman" (eg Moses 5:13; [LDS]Gospel Principles, revised 1979,ch3, and throughout LDS teachings; Doctrine and Covenants 78:20,95:17)// with Christ of the Bible, Who is GOD with us, the Word of GOD made flesh and dwelt among us, the manifestation of the invisible GOD (eg Matthew 1:23, John 1, Colossians)?

Jill
While there were instances of polygamy in the Bible, it was NOT commanded by GOD of the Bible, Who commanded: "Thou shalt not commit adultery"(take more than one spouse)(eg Deuteronomy 5:18). Whenever man disobeyed this law of GOD of the Bible, he suffered troubles and heartache and rebuke from GOD of the Bible. If you read 'the Bible' about this, instead of taking the word of teachers, you might find Abraham, David, Solomon, and others of the Bible, were NOT commanded by GOD of the Bible to take multiple wives, and you will find the troubles they suffered for doing so.//Yet LDS teach LDS God told LDS Abraham and others to have more than one wife. (eg D&C 132).

Wow! Afraid to lose congregation to a religion with more 'substance?'

archeologists, anthropologists, scientists, including the Smithsonian use the Bible in their studies, for its accuracies in locations, peoples, histories.

As for Book of Mormon, even The Deseret News, in its Church section, cautioned against LDS members putting too much 'substance' in the locations of Book of Mormon as fact or evidence, saying efforts to locate places are fruitless and cannot bring any definite results (Church News, July 29, 1978, vol.48, no.30, p.16).

Some more of the LDS 'substance:'
Chairman of Brigham Young University Anthropology Department complained about LDS missionaries and amateur archeologists showing slide shows bent on bolstering faith in Book of Mormon, calling some of the most popular books on Mormon archaeology and geography (by such writers as Dewey and Edith Farnsworth, Jack West, and Paul Cheesman) naive, harmful and cut-and-paste. He complains of LDS being "gullible" on many subjects, not just this one, saying Salt Lake City has earned a nationwide reputation as a center for fraud. John L. Sorenson, "Instant Expertise on Book of Mormon Archeology," in BYU Studies, spring 1976, pp.429-32).

Let's see now. LDS must earn a certificate from (deceased) Joseph Smith to enter into their celestial kingdom, (eg Journal of Discourses,vol,7.p.289)which requires keeping all laws, commands, covenants and ordinances of LDS prophets: "Any Latter-Day Saint who denounces or opposes, whether actively OR otherwise, ANY plan or doctrine advocated by the prophets, seers, and revelators of the [LDS]Church is cultivating the spirit of apostasy.Lucifer...wins a great victory when he can get the members of the [LDS]Church...TO DO THEIR OWN THINKING. What cunning! WHEN our [LDS]LEADERS SPEAK, THE THINKING HAS BEEN DONE. When they propose a plan...when they point the way, THERE IS NO OTHER WAY WHICH IS SAFE. When they give direction, it should mark THE END OF CONTROVERSY. [LDS]God works in no other way. TO THINK OTHERWISE, without immediate repentance, may cost one his faith, may destroy his testimony, and leave him a stranger to the kingdom of [LDS]God." (The Improvement Era, ward teachers' Message, Sustaining the General Authorities of the Church" June 1945, p.1, CAPS added).

"Christians," on the otherhand:
As many as received him [Christ of the Bible], to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of GOD [of the Bible]. And of his fulness have all we received, and grace for grace. For the law was given by Moses, buy grace ([the free gift] and truth came by Jesus Christ [of the Bible]...Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world...the same is he which baptizeth with the Holy Ghost[of the Bible]...whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life. For God [of the Bible] so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish but have everlasting life. (eg John 1-3).

Really, now, Jill, those "Christian" preachers must just really be sweating at all the so much more 'substance' LDS have to offer.

A statement about 'most Christians' is without merit, as LDS do not fellowship with "Christians," how, therefore, can one know 'most Christians' OR their understanding of the Bible, OR how they read it along with their 'preachers,' as LDS also have no 'preachers.'

In regards to the triune nature of GOD[of the Bible]Jill might want to read that part of the Bible which says, "...and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, GOD WITH US" (Matthew 1:23).
"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God,and THE WORD WAS GOD...AND THE WORD BECAME FLESH AND DWELT AMONG US"(John 1:1,14).
"Jesus[of the Bible]saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Phillip? HE THAT HATH SEEN ME HATH SEEN THE FATHER; and how sayest thou then, shew us the Father?"(John 14:9).
"THE IMAGE OF THE INVISIBLE GOD" (Colossians 1:15).
"Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after CHRIST[of the bible].FOR IN HIM DWELLETH ALL THE FULNESS OF THE GODHEAD BODILY" (Colossians 2:8,9).

As for my knowledge of the Bible, would you prefer I begin in the beginning? the psalms? in the prophecies? the New Testament in Christ? Revelation? where?
You do not know me and make empty suppositions.
Let me tell you of this "fair weather follower of Christian beliefs." I gave my heart to Jesus as a child and invited Him into my life as my Saviour and my Lord. I have died and gone to heaven once already and there I spoke with the Lord and asked him could I come back to the earth and not leave my child without his parent, and He allowed. I have gone off the side of a mountain in a MVA, calling out to God in the night. The first people to my car were a Pastor and a nurse. The doctors gave my daughter a 98% chance she would Never walk again, but I prayed, and read my Bible over her, and believed, and she has since, not only walked, but is happily married with two children and receiving her BA in computer program engineering. I give GOD (of the Bible) all the glory! I know Jesus of the Bible, on a very personal basis, He dwells in me, and walks every step with me, by His Holy Spirit. That same Holy Spirit of the triune GOD of the Bible. Not only have I studied my Bible, and pray to GOD of the Bible, I Live by it.
I have also studied with LDS, and have studied LDS in depth for nearly 8 years. Not 'about' LDS, but LDS scripture, history, from your own publications.

Why are LDS continually throwing out unfounded and unsubstantiated, viscious accusations, most often showing their own ignorance of the people they accuse?

If funding Gay/Lesbian SexEd for Kindergarten public school children, without their parents' knowledge or consent is a HIGH STANDARD OF CONDUCT, as Romney did while governor of Massechusetts, you can keep it.I don't want any part of it. If being the ONLY state to post ZERO GAIN in employeed residents, while Romney was governor, or making millions forcing thousands out of jobs, as romney with his Buy Out Firm, is business experience, America doesn't need it.
Romney has a hard time in debates because he has no core principals.  He has flip-flopped so much that he struggles to answer questions for which he has not been programmed.
Romney was on fire. He has grown up a lot and is no longer running in a very liberal state. There must be a lot of people commenting here that are pretty jealous because their candidate, like Rudy, were blown off the map. Huckabee and Rudy looked liked little pandering wimps caught with their tails between their legs because Mitt exposed their ridiculous point of views.
I came away with greater respect for Tancredo, Hunter, Thompson and McCain - they won't win, but they are decent guys. I was actually very impressed with Ron Paul, what he said about the ideals of creating an AU are dead on. We didn't want to believe it a few years back and thought it was a conspiracy theory. We've been doing some reading and there is no way  we can say that now. I don't agree with some other things he said, but he's very clear and bold about many things ALL conservatives need to be talking about.
Please no more republican presidents for this century.
Remember Nixon, do I need to say more?  Reagan the greatest recession since the great depression and the greatest deficit of all presidents together. And do we need to say anything about baby bush? The first time around the American voter was smart enough to not vote for him.  The S. court should have ruled the electoral college out of date and unconstitutional. Please, no more republicans for anything.  We need a strong, honest and compassionate woman.  The men has screwed up since Ike.
I think Romney did well.  Many people attack him because he does want the nation to take a higher road.  Many people get caught up in issues that draw away from the big issues like the national debt, energy cost, and men and woman dying in a war.  The bible question was an attack on his faith, not his ability to run the nation.  Of course he believes in the bible.  He has and will swear into office with his hand on it.
It's about time that Huckabee got some attention. He makes too much sense for the Liberal Media to grasp. He has good ideas and strong moral convictions. Remember a year before the 1994 election hardly no one heard of Slick Willey and he scamed his way into the White House. Go Huckabee, finally a conservative for we voters who still hold those values dear!
Romney showed his true liberalism last night. He said his stance on abortion was a mistake? Nonsense. He's a flip flopper.A phony. Giuliani doesn't even own a gun? Amazing. I have never seen a candidate dodge questions the way Romney did when pressed for answers. His performance was terrible. Giuliani's performance was terrible also. Neither of the non traditional conservative, neo colonialist candidates cited directly from the constitution, that should tell us something. No wonder Romney,McCain and Giuliani were booed during the night. Of the front runners I think Ron Paul did the best as usual he stuck to his unshakable principles. A Paul/Huckabee ticket would be interesting. Huckabee did well. Thompson at this point is a non issue but I love how he calls out Romney for what he is...a fake Republican. Its going to come down to the 2 ACTUAL conservatives which are Mike Huckabee and Ron Paul. Romney and Giuliani are fake conservatives supporting big govt and big spending and not wanting to bring troops home from the 130 countries that they are not needed in...then they have the gaul to strangely talk about bringing spending under control while wanting to sspend trillions on global welfarism.McCain did ok but had to be educated on the difference between isolationism and non interventionism....a pretty embarassing moment for him I think. Shame on CNN though and their offesive against Ron Paul....you don't rasie 4.3 million dollars in 24 if you have no support. Sorry CNN it just doesn't work that way and I was embarassed to see them try make it seem as though it does work that way. The more the govt run media fights Ron Paul is the more support he will get, its really that simple. I am a black/hispanic immigrant by the way.

At this point in time,I believe they all are afraid of Hilliary. This was the first time i have realy paied attention to Romney and i get a DEEP gut feeling i can't trust this guy. I am a retired vet and i would NOT want this guy for my commander in chief.. All the way around Romney should not and cannot  be trusted
Mormans:  The so called "long gone  polygamy " Is NOT long gone just to Utah and you will see!! Look at the News and see the "morman "Preacher" who forced kids into marrage. Need i go ON??? Remeber if some biggie in the morman church gets a message from 'GOD" to erase some religion or country  this guy is sitting on a arsnel of NUKS, and with "GOD's order...  well what can i say   Bill
The YouTube debate was horrible.  Not only was it circus -like in it's feel, but the candidates stunk.  I'm now pretty set on voting for the other party.

I'm also surprised that some of these comments have been approved by the webmaster.  Especially Mick's--who is picking fights and obviously using this discussion board to promote or at least release his anti-mormon sentiments.  How is this related to the blog again?
