Initial takeaway from the debate

Posted: Wednesday, November 28, 2007 10:11 PM by Mark Murray

From NBC's Mark Murray
Perhaps there was a good reason why some of the GOP candidates were wary about the format of this YouTube debate. On many of the questions -- like over the Bible, the Confederate flag, and black-on-black crime -- the candidates looked as uncomfortable as a Republican at a Socialist Club meeting. The loosey-goosey, bottom-up nature of the Internet just doesn't seem to be that great of a fit for a top-down, buttoned-up Republican Party. Indeed, outside of Giuliani's campaign video, none of the candidates seemed to have fun with their own YouTubes.

It wasn't until the last question -- over Rudy's support for the Red Sox -- that the candidates seemed to have fun with the debate and the format.

Are there broader implications for a Republican Party that's not comfortable with this medium? Perhaps, when you consider fundraising and debate venues like this one.

Ron Paul asked RP Nation to offer youtube videos.  So they picked from the videos offered by us.
I do not think the representation of the Republican Party as "top-down buttoned-up" is either accurate (I can remember plenty of periods in which Democratic party/control can be described as top-down buttoned-up as well) or appropriate for a website that, while humorously written, is spelling out the "take-aways" for the less-than enthusiastic/involved audience.
2008 Presidential Election Weekly Poll

The Only Poll That Matters.

An independent voter's take:

Paul: A-
Huckabee: A-
Thompson: B-
Giuliani: C+
McCain: C-
Romney: D-

Romney would have been a F without his effective retort about his undocumented workers at the outset, most of the night sounding like he was reciting bullet points concocted in a staff meeting, and McCain would have been a F if not for his wonderful anti-torture answer; the fact that he got only 50/50 support with his pro-war rant against Paul FROM A GOP CROWD is a serious blow to McCain, and he jumped the shark when he mentioned Hitler and more of the crowd turned on him.  This was Thompson's best debate so far if for funny lines moreso than serious ones, Giuliani got hit a few times but had some strong moments, Huckabee was very likeable and effective, and Paul got a surprisingly strong positive reaction from a GOP crowd when he stood up against the war; his line about us paying to blow up and then rebuild bridges in other countries while ours are crumbling was probably the most memorable line of the debate, particularly to voters who care about our pressing fiscal problems.

The most nauseating moment of the debate, however, was the xenophobic trifecta of Rudy, McCain, and Hunter TOTALLY missing the point of a Muslim voter's question, each taking it as an excuse for a neoconservative diatribe, to the degree that it was intellectually offensive and essentially spat on her question.  Watching an ugly moment like that is almost enough to make one wonder if a Republican could ever be elected President in a general election anymore.
I thought it was a convention for Funeral Directors. They were almost stiff enough to need one.
I agree with Bill Bennet after the debate. Romney won hands down!!
This debate was a total joke.
It is obvious that CNN wants to pick our president for us. CNN definitely didn't want Ron Paul to gain anything possibility from this debate. It couldn't be more obvious, give unfair questions, then exclude him from nearly the rest of the entire debate. CNN should be ashamed!
Are you kidding?  Huckabee's line about Jesus being too smart to run for public office was funny, disarming and great politics.  There were several humorous moments and even pointed comments were taken with humor, when they showed the reactions from other candidates.  The only angst I saw was McCain and his reaction to Romney's response about torture and waterboarding.  At the very least, given his experience, it was sincere.

As a Republican, I think the CNN/You Tube format worked much better than I expected.  Some of the questions were truly entertaining, especially the "toss, lock and load" 2nd amendment question.

I don't expect Democrats to understand humor in the first place, but I didn't see an uncomfortable body on the stage.  Some subpar answers, yes, but uncomfortable, no.  And a great diversity (Democrat code word) in the answers, far more diverse than Democrat hair splitting on socialized medicine.

And if you want the answer to the black-on-black violence question, go to a non-candidate and check out Brian Whitlock of the Kansas City Star and his column on the dead Miami football player in which he, a black sportswriter, uses the term "Black KKK".

The Republican candidates sure couldn't go there, but I wish they could have found a way.

I'd even find Paul a place in the cabinet or maybe surgeon general.

Great group overall and I'll vote for the nominee.

Sorry, my apologies to JASON Whitlock, not Brian.
HILLARY WAS THE BIG WINNER TONITE....LOL.....FUNERAL DIRECTORS CONVENTION...LOOKED MORE LIKE THE DECEASED...LOL
Some embarassingly stupid questions and some even worse answers BUT if the idea was to provide the audience with an opportunity to compare the candidates then this worked fairly well.  I'm a Ron Paul fan and I thought he did quite well. Standing up to McCain's nonsense about the war was great. Except for Tancredo, the rest did well in terms of getting their message across.  As for the videos, it was quite a mix. Tancredo's was hopelessly stupid.

Romney, Paul, Guliani, Huckabee  all get a "B"
Thompson and Duncan a "C" and Tancredo a "D"
CNN and Fox News along with most national corporate media have vastly ignored the lesser known candidates and according to news coverage and air time given our candidates they seem to want to choose our candidate for us.  Looking at the time and the number of questions given to the candidates you can look at the total time they are given to speak in these debates.  Its almost according to the candidates place in the polls.  Let the people decide!  Media loves to tell us what to wear, what to eat, what is hot what is not.  Now they are influencing our vote.  So much for fair and balanced. C'mon, man.  Their ≠ there.  Fix that in the post.  I hate it when pro outlets screw up the basics, and being in a hurry isn't a good excuse.  Just don't let an interesting read get bogged down on the fundamentals.
HDNet Dec 1 DNC debate (Sat 7:30pm ET).

Ron Paul was ROBBED. he was given NO iopportunity to respond to the OTHER important issues like the economy and immigration and gays in the military. He supports the Log Cabin Republicans, but wasn't allowed to answer when the question was asked.

The format was great, but CNN flubbed it up again. Thank God for the 'net!

Democrats should note the "red meat" reaction from the audience when Huckabee suggested sending Hillary to Mars. They will need the moderate portion of that audience to vote Democratic and from the sounds of things Senator Clinton IS the issue that will might mend the torn GOP coalition. This is one wet dream we can't afford to f**k up.
If thats the best the republicans can put up, whoever the democrative nominee is can start measuring for drapes at the white house.

The disgusting part... I was saying this back in 2000 and 2004 where I never thought Americans could possibly be stupid or naive enough to vote for this gunslinging, Enlish language challenged, brute, of a moron of a President. Well guess what, people like Jerry are determined to ruin this country. Let's all give an applause for everyone stupid enough to grind this nation's premise into the dirt. Doesn't matter, Hillary will be changing things around from day one.

Here's some humor for you, look at the white house. Where's the joke? You were stupid enough to help that disaster happen. See, we can be funny too. By the way, Hillary is winning in 08. Why don't we have this discussion about comedy once my candidate wins and whatever idiot loser Republican you're supporting loses. Once that happens, let's talk about who knows what funny is. You stuck Dems with the worst choice poissible, and now us Dems are more than thrilled with sticking you idiots with Hillary for 8 years.
Ron Paul IS having fun with YouTube. His video was the winner of the CONTEST his campaign held. He owns YouTube!
The water is boiling and it is boiling down to this.  Hunter and Tancredo have no traction - they are out.  Ron Paul is not a Republican, otherwise he would understand how important it is that; as McCain said, let our troops win - he is out. McCain is too passionate besides I am not convinced that water boarding is torture - he is out.  Romney flip flops and tries to avoid giving a direct answer - he is out. Thompson is OK but I am concerned about comments regarding his motivation - he has two strikes.  Guliani is probably the smartest guy but... well I am not sure but something about him concerns me - he has 1 strike.  Huckabee can beat Hillary, he is a good debater, sincere, articulate, etc. - he is batting 300.  Time will tell - stay tuned.

My rating of CNN on a zero to ten - was a minus 2. I think they allowed a "Gay Forum" to take over a segment and make a speech (I am not homophobic - I just don't care about this non-presidential issue) and wasted incredible opportunities for America to learn, with discussion on non-presidential issues of the Bible's authority (and I doubt if any viewer including the questioner understood any of the answers on the "Bible"), and gun control which 70% of America doesn't care about.

I have 22 cal guns and don't believe I could protect the home land using them against night-sighted, laser scoped, high efficiency 3 burst automatic weapons equipped invaders - sorry.

I wish the back-burner candidates would graciously drop out and not waste America's time listening to irrational isolationism, or other minutia. These TV debates could be the best way to beat the sound-bites.
I might vote for Ron Paul if he gets the republican Nom.  Otherwise, I will vote for the Democratic nom, who ever that is.
Paul is a nut. Tancredo is a nut. Hunter's great and has no chance.

McCain kicked ass.
Huck scares me.

CNN gets an F for 3 planted questioners.
