Post-Midnight TiVO'd Thoughts

Big night for Mike Huckabee. On a night when many voters were looking at
him in a different light thanks to the dramatic increase in attention  the media's been giving him, he delivered big time. Unlike previous debates, he didn't open with a joke but instead sounded very presidential in his first answer; He had his share of one-liners, but he seemed to balance the funny with more presidential rhetoric.

Huckabee stepped up his game tonight. The rest of the field better  be glad that the GOP debates end on Dec. 12, a full three weeks before  the Iowa caucuses and that's enough time for his potentially dominant  debate performances to fade from voter memories.  Surprisingly, he didn't get attacked too much. Romney took a shot, but  nothing too harsh (Iowa nice, right?). Most importantly for Huckabee, he'll likely be declared the winner of this debate by every member of  the Amtrak Corridor media elite and that should get him some serious  buzz. The question for the rest of the field: when will others begin to  take him as a more serious threat.

Two other candidates stood out simply because they seemed to dominate  most of the conversation: Romney and Rudy. If someone was watching this debate without knowing the standing of the candidates in the polls, one would easily assume the two frontrunners were Romney and Rudy with no one else really a close third. 

Giuliani was not at his best, really started off slow as his "santuary  mansion" line was not delivered very well; Al,so, someone in his campaign should help him learn to give a MUCH shorter answer when talking about guns.  The best part of Giuliani's performance was his YouTube video; it was the funniest of the bunch.

Romney had an uneven night as well, at some moments, he was outstanding
and at other times, just awful. It was THAT uneven of a performance. He seems to be struggling with getting very aggressive against Giuliani and  trying to softly jab at Huckabee. He's not in an easy position.

The other candidate that certainly made an impression was McCain, thanks to his sobriety.  It's interesting, Huckabee-McCain would be a fascinating ticket because Huckabee likes to be the sunny good cop while McCain seems to be getting comfortable becoming the (sometimes) pessimistic bad cop.  McCain was strong but bordered on angry too many times to make me think he's going to play well in Iowa (a place that he needs to start getting some traction). 

The other major candidate, Fred Thompson, seemed more comfortable in  this debate than in his first two outings but just because he was comfortable doesn't mean he enough great moments. He seemed like a supporting member of the cast rather than a centerpiece of the debate.  His shots at Giuliani and Romney were probably lines that sounded better in his head than when he delivered them. 

As for the rest of the field: Paul does a pretty good job of sounding rational when posed with somewhat irrational questions. His trilateral commission answer didn't sound conspiratorial even though the whole premise of the question is just that: conspiratorial.

And Hunter and Tancredo really don't belong on stage anymore. Guys, it's time to go; the other six have proven viability; the two of you haven't and if it wasn't for the debates, you'd have no platform. Frankly, many people probably forgot the two men were still running since it had been so long since the Republicans last debated.

A final thought on the editorial content of the debate. CNN probably didn't win over any conservative viewers who tuned in to find out if the network was friendly toward conservatives. The abortion questions were questions that Planned Parenthood and NARAL would have posed to pro-life candidates, not what Republican voters would have posed to these Republican candidates. Ditto with some of the gun question and the gay rights questions. The candidates probably weren't happy that CNN chose to linger on the retired general who asked about gays in the military.

Lets see, if liberal (read lunatic democrat appointed supreme court justices) had not gone far far away from the constitution in finding Roe v Wade there would be a state by state debate about abortion, as it should be. You want Constitutional rights not already in the Constitution, AMEND IT.


Gays in the military. Nice question, don't care about it. What I do find disturbing is the significant number of questions that were fielded to the Republican PRIMARY candidates by self professed Democrats. This is a REPUBLICAN primary and REPUBLICAN concerns need to be the ones addressed.

Second Amendment rights. Once again, we have to go back to the Constitution. What does it say? It says that we need to protect ourselves from who? From Government. The last Supreme court decision on the matter found that it pertained to individual manned, operated and fielded weapons which would include assault riffles as LEGAL. Is the weapon something that the military would issue to a single individual? In the case of assualt riffles, the answer is yes. Is the weapon commonly used in the military, once again the answer is yes. Of course, we have a new ruling coming up before the next election. The finale thing about the second amendment is that it is a right that is inalienable and is intended to prevent the government from abusing the power entrusted to it from the people which is where the power comes from.
Having watched last night's debate, I now know how each candidate would, as president, make the tough choices:

Giuliani: I'll decide based on what I did in New York.
McCain: I'll decide based on experience.
Romney: I'll pass and let someone else decide.
Thompson: I'll let you know when I decide.
Huckabee: I'll decide based on principle.
Paul: I'll bring the troops home and then decide.
Tancredo: I won't let illegal aliens decide.
Hunter: I'll build a wall and then decide.

Contrast these approaches with that of Hillary Clinton: "I'll have my people conduct an opinion poll and then decide."

Kudos to Chuck Todd for acknowledging what everyone in the heartland saw: Huckabee won this debate hands down.

I think most commentators on NRO, etc. are too inside-the-beltway, too northeastern to understand this.

Rommey was awful. I wanted to like the guy, but his answers to the gun & bible questions made everyone in my family cringe. It made him look a like a phony.

Guiliani's charges against Romney made him look small. McCain's answer on torture made him look soft on terrorism. Paul, Hunter and Tancredo are uninteresting to me.

I was a Fred Thompson supporter, then a Romney supporter, but after this debate I am changing to Huckabee. Fred is just to tired-looking. No energy. I was hesitant to support Huckabee due some questions about his fiscal conservatism but friends of mine in Arkansas has laid these concerns to rest. And Huckabee has more charisma and warmth than all the rest of the candidates put together.

If an Officer man/woman and a enlisted woman/man are having an affair, they can kick them out....

If the officer and the enlisted gay people are having an affair, doesn't that fall under don't ask/don't tell?
I was disappointed by the inequality regarding the amount of time and number of questions each candidate received...I wanted to hear more from Ron Paul, who answered very articulately whenever given the opportunity, which wasn't often at all!  I also noticed that his video was presented at the very end of the program.  I too noticed others picking up on RPs ideas, such as abolishing the IRS and focusing on states' rights.  I gotta say--Ron Paul has a message that resonates with me, and evidently with a lotta other people!

Great analysis!  CNN's commentators were just as biased as their moderator - they tried to make it look like all the republicans did badly.  I'm glad to hear someone out there with an objective eye/ear.

By the way, in a primary shouldn't a debate center on questions the primary's voters are thinking about?  I understand that CNN and YouTube really want to grill these guys, but no one who thinks abortion is a great idea is going to be voting in this primary!!  For any republican voters who haven't seen it yet - watch the Values Voters debate online from a few months ago.  The questioners there asked the questions that you are wanting asked - it was great!
i don't see how a genuine god fearing man in Mike Huckabee can be called fake and unreal.  He clearly won and is the most genuine candidate.  Mitt Romney is tied to a religion that has a bad name due to polygamy and other questionable ideas.  Huckabee is the man to continue the dream of America when the pilgrims came over for religious freedom.  He will treat the people fairly and he will get the job done in presidency like he did in arkansas with a largely democratic congress

Come on!  Huckabee is the Howard Dean of 03' and when it gets to be about 10 days away from the Iowa Caucus...just watch how he will drop in the polls.  National Security and Immigration are the two big issues and Huckabee (although he sounds tougher on illegal immigration now) has NO National Security creds...and we need them now more than ever.
Please please please... when checking out Mike Huckabee and the charges leveled against him consider the context.

Gov Huckabee is not the 'perfect' candidate, but he sure as heck is a lot more of what this country needs right now than any of the other candidates.

For all of you that think that Romney won (including Bill Bennett) - get real, he was tripped up on a number of occasions and got into a petty argument with Rudy where all he could do is repeat himself and even after demanding an answer didn't get one.

Huckabee is the class of the field right now - and there is nothing to indicate he is interested in a christian theocracy (it didn't happen in Arkansas did it?).  If you don't like his positions, fine - but at least be honest about what he is about.
Huckabee is surging in Iowa because the religious conservatives are beginning to think about voting their heart instead of just trying to defeat Hillary.  I worry that the next time we have a huge national catastrophe with President Huckabee, the policy will be to just leave it in God's hands.  Plays well, but no accountability.
Huckabee was articulate, sincere, and convincing even though he is the candidate least in line with my views. Romney sounded like a used car salesman and he might be toast after last night's preformance. The debate was a “push” for the other candidates.

Our founding fathers did not consider being a man of faith as a disqualifying trait for national leadership.  This is the same issue JFK had to contend with 48 years ago.  I thought we had gotten over that.  Huckabee's and Romney's values are just that, their values, not an agenda for how they want to reprogram the US to their beliefs.  Rather than attack them because of their faith, go to their web sites and read about the issues they care about and what they would do about them.  If you agree with them, vote for them.  If not, vote for someone else.  But it is really ignorant to display such histeria over a man of faith changing the US from a secular nation.
I thought Huckabee was the winner of the debate.  Romney was just looking to say whatever the thought people wanted to hear.  The "time is not now" for gays in the military or "the time has not yet come" for a ban on abortion.  Take a stance, Mitt!  

I disliked seeing the candidates smirk at Ron Paul each time he was given a chance to answer.  Too bad that the Constitution is that much of a joke.  Remember the 10th amendment?
Relax, Huckabee was not upset about some of the lame questions in the debate and he answers the really important ones on his web site at Mikehuckabee.com.

Huckabee did not win that debate.  Romney smacked down Giuliani on sanctuaries and then turned around and smacked Huckabee down on state tuition for illegal immigrants.  Romney took this round hands down.  Well, unless you count Ron Paul who always wins because he actually answers questions and has something interesting to say.
I agree 100% with Mike in Denver. Those of you saying where were the topics of importance to people, like education and healthcare, forget that the questions asked were chosen by CNN. The candidates had to answer what was asked. Out of 5000 submitted. So, we are to believe no one asked about the "surge" in Iraq and the prospect of victory there? No one asked about Pakistan, or Iran, or Al Queda? Are you kidding??? These are the number one issues to Republican voters, along with immigration and the economy. CNN stacked the deck with questions to present their idea of what Republicans think is important, not what they actually think is important. By the way all of you Democrats and lefties posting here, Republicans are also mothers, fathers, grandparents, etc. We care about health care, education, etc. too. We just have a different philosophy about solving the problems than you do. Why can you not engage in reasonable discussions about these things instead of casting insults and cheap shots at people?
Huckabee definitely won the debate and would have recieved more attention had he been asked more questions.  It seems Mitt and Rudy were getting all of the limelight.  Mitt looked like a Ken doll with all of his answers being rehearsed, off the cuff Romney looks awkward and insincere.
No Juan.  We are not supposed to be a secular nation.  The idea you are referring to is the prohibition of the establishment of an official religion of the state.  All of the founding fathers believed in the Bible in much the way Huckabee explained his understanding of it last night and on a regular basis not only looked to it for guidance, but referred to God's divine hand in many of the fouding documents:
"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness." Etc.
Just as you have the God given right to change the channel, you have the right to ignore God.  The Founders wanted to ensure you could do that by not having an official religion, so each could practice his own way.  But in no uncertain terms did any of them EVER indicate that they felt we should become a secular nation.

Romney won the debate?  Are you kidding?  I agree with Nick and Matt - Romney is all 'new car smell' and has no idea what he actually thinks about anything.  Just because Romney 'looks presidential', i.e. tall with a pretty set of teeth, doesn't mean he'll make a good president.
    On almost every question, you can almost see Romney trying to figure out how he's going to wrangle a politically expedient answer.  He's a political animal in much the same way as Clinton.  
    And another thing bothers me about Romney, and that's the idea that you can have a strong faith in God but that your faith won't enter into your politics.  Huh?  Look, if you believe in God, any version of God, and even bother going to church or temple or whatever, how could you possibly say that you wouldn't seriously consider the tenants of the source of all that is good and wise in the universe when you're making your decisions?  Ridiculous.  You're either lying about your faith or lying about your decision-making process.  Whether Christian or Muslim or Buddhist, I'd like to think that someone in a leadership role believes in a higher authority that they're answerable to.  The rest of us just need to figure out if we agree with their interpretation of what God wants from us (i.e. there are surely Muslims whose faith mirrors closely the values that Christians have, and there are obviously Muslims whose interpretations of their faith are reprehensible to us.)
    And to Juan in Ft. Lauderdale:  Enforcing the laws that protect personal freedom, freedom of religion, and believing in everyone's right to make decisions for themselves is NOT in conflict with Christianity, save perhaps the issue of abortion -  but you have to appreciate that some people believe that abortion is murder - they may be wrong, or partly wrong, but it doesn't make them evil.   If you believed that legalized murder was happening on a large scale in America, it would no longer be a simple matter of "personal choice" to you, but a terrible tragedy that required national action.  You're not seeing the other side, here.  
     Finally, why so hostile toward Christianity?  Don't confuse Christianity with the fools like Falwell and Robertson who claim to represent it - people have done much good and much bad under the same banner.  If I live in Florida and kill somebody, do I represent all Floridians?  Or all Southerners?  Do you really find Huckabee's faith so abhorrent?  He seems to be a pretty strict adherent to Sermon-On-The-Mount Christianity, which basically tells you to be humble and put your self-interest secondary to the needs of your fellow man.  Wouldn't mind seeing that philosophy in Washington for a change...
It is a sad moment when the secular humanist speaks fear about people of faith. Because a man is a minister, must he be a religious tyrant? Of those who have a more compassionate view on immigration, Huckabee stands out by defining his reason as based on faith. I feel pity for the liberal that is so frightened of the faithful who are more likely to stand to principle and take a bullet for a liberal than their similarly inclined "friends." I wish you could understand the gift of faith and what it does for your opinion of your fellow human beings. I will be voting for the candidate who is least afraid of this truth and, thankfully, Mike Huckabee also won the debate. If you all head to Canada, I hope you come back and can share in world that the humble will extend to all.

How 'bout watching the debate?  Figures the ignorant liberal is on here ranting when she didn't even watch the debate to know what the hell she's talking about.  The question was fine...what was absurd was the way CNN kept dwelling on it.  And it's the MILITARY who has problems with gays in the military, not the Republican Party.

The Second Amendment wasn't about hunting... it was about your God given right to the means to self defense, and the need for the ability to keep criminals, foreign enemies AND the state at bay.  Furthermore, many want to take ALL firearms away (have you heard of the case going before SCotUS in the spring?).  And, do you know what an "assault" weapon is as per the law?  It was a retarded law because hunting rifles were often more deadly than the banned "assault" rifles.  Being an "assault" rifle has nothing to do with anything except that the word creates a stigma with liberal dolts like the reporters on CNN who repeatedly call Semi-Automatic weapons Automatic.

This debate is for the REPUBLICAN primary.  It should have questions that are important to REPUBLICAN voters.

My biggest problem with Huckabee is that while governor he had 14 complaints to the Ethics Commission, resulting in 5 violations.  I would like to know more about these before I decide on his character...
"Separation of Church and State" is not the correct phrase.  The Constitution prohibits the establishment of a state church, or the adoption by the US Government of a church as the official religion of the United States.  It also promises that all can worship freely without liberal whack jobs hindering them.

Anyone who thinks that means we can't have a president who's religious is completely missing the point.  Many of our presidents have been very religious people.  And they have the right to their faith as much as everyone else has the right to theirs.

They get equal protection.  They just can't get married, but that's OK, because marriage isn't a right.  Marriage is a legal status granted by the state to recognize a certain type of relationship which it defines.  Saying that gays don't get equal protection is like saying that LLPs don't get equal protection because they have different legal standing than LLCs.

Our founding fathers founded this country under God, read what's on your money, and pick up a history book or two. This country needs a conservative who has unchanging morals and can lead this country in the right direction. Mike Huckabee definitely appears to be the one for the job.

I35 exists and Giuliani supporters have designated it a holy site. They think it is fulfillment of biblical prophecy and will cure you of homosexuality. Youtube has a video of Pat Robertson's related news segment.

Yet Ron Paul supporters are considered nuts? The CFR and The Trilateral Commission have websites and real membership rosters. NAFTA, WTO, NAU, ALCA, SPP, etc. ditto. I35 is a real road.

There is no conspiracy but conspiratorial ideologies among certain political leaders who place corporate gain above national sovereignty and actually see the latter as an impediment to their profit lines. No big shock here. Neither is it a surprise that they have stacked this election in their favor after 28 years of ruling the US.

Juan, you are an idiot. Im sorry to tell you this, but you are. I may not be the smartest person in the world but I know that 50 something percent of America believes that life began 6000 years ago. They also believe that murdering children is a crime and should be stopped. And they believe that homosexuality is a sin and that those who practice it need help. Hate to break it to you but its the truth. Oh, by the way... America is a Christian nation that was founded on Christian principles and rooted in the Word of God. Our founding fathers would have no problem electing a baptist minister to office because back then, before the Democrats rewrote the Constitution, there was no such thing as separation of church and state. Oh wait, it still doesnt exist in our Constitution, it is just a lie made up by the Liberal Democrats. Read the Constitution if you dont believe me. Mike in Baltimore, you are correct, the First Amendment to our Constitution should not be interpreted as barring persons of faith from running for public office.  Having said that, I personally don't want another religious nut in the White House.

I do have a solution though.  Perhaps we could have a "don't ask, don't tell" policy for religious ideologues who want to serve in our federal government.  It would work pretty much the same way the discriminatory "don't ask, don't tell" policy works with gays in the military.  You'll be free to serve so long as you keep your religious convictions to yourself.  What do you think?  Fair enough?    
Mike in Baltimore-You have no glue about what it means to be a gay man in this homophobic times. My partner and I have been together over 6 years and we do not have the benefits of heterosexual couples in terms of joint income tax, hlth coverage that covers partners (unless you work in a progressive company); no legal inheritance, 31 states still allows companies to fire you because you are gay; no legal adoptions in Florida although we are raising our 16 y/o teenager who is turning out great, rights of hospital visits, not able to serve open in the military etc. Unless you have personally been descriminated against YOU have no idea what it's about. Why should I pay taxes to a federal government that makes a mockery of No taxation w/o egual representation. I and my partner want the same rights and privileges that are given naturally to straight couples like in Spain, Canada, Belgium and other progressive countries. PERIOD!

I had a rough day at work yesterday, and was more than a little tired last night... did I really hear Ron Paul say that we brought 911 on ourselves because we 'occupied' Saudi Arabia?  If he thinks that, he just offended his way out of my vote.  I'm a Republican (although not a terribly loyal one)and so far I'm voting for Obama!

You mix up issues in your last post.  There are legal documents that can fix some (not all) of the obstacles you mention: Inheritance (with a properly drawn will), health care decisions (with a HC Power of Attorney), etc.

You then end with a rant about taxation without representation.  Have you lost the right to vote because you are gay?  I don't think so.  It is just that not enough people agree with you to get your way.  Welcome to democracy.  You don't like it?  Try N. Korea or Iran.  I'm sure you'll be welcomed there.
Danny- It is the right wing fascist/rascist idealogues like yourself that have done the most damage to this country throughout our history by first judging, condeming, discriminating and if that this not work;enslaving/ lynching blacks , denying Indians their land and placing them in reservations, giving women less pay for same jobs, and all in the name of religion. Spare me your condescending putdowns/insults because I have liberals beliefs and by the way my gene pool is pretty good with a doctor, 2 lawyers, teacher and I have a Master's degree.   To homophobes likes Chris Peterman and Larry Craig's who rails against homosexuality by using scriptures and turn out to be self-loathing closet cases. This media bias towards Huckabee is really silly. Huckabee should stick to preaching.  He is obviously trying to ingratiate himself with the neo-con warmongerers who make up the base of the Repubs and cloak himself with this false veneer of the great compassionate Christian, in order to get in line for Guiliani's VP or, less likely, Romneys VP.  Besides being pro-war and pro death penalty (so much for the Christian act) he is an establishment liberal faking to be conservative to get votes.  He raised taxes by more than 500 million in a poor state as Governor!  The national sales tax will not reduce taxes either. He is for all kinds of govt spending. How is he a conservative, other than being a bible thumper and a war lover?  Oh I forgot that is all it takes to pass as "conservative" with the Repubs nowadays.  When he starts pandering and begging to be on the ticket with pro-abortion Guiliani, it will be that much more obvious what a hypocrite and liar he is.
None of these pathetic Repubs, except Ron Paul of course, have an ounce of intellectual credibilty or integrity, and while the war hawks will cheer them on in the primaries, none of them have a chance of winning the Presidency.  So deal with it.
