Brownback and Babs

From NBC/NJ's Carrie Dann
DES MOINES, IA -- For McCain's sake, Sam Brownback wishes he was Babs.

"I wish that he had glitzier people up here to represent him," the former candidate told an audience of Iowa county officials as he stumped for McCain here this morning. "I'm not Barbra Streisand. I'm not Oprah."

"I wish I were," he added.

The often straight-laced conservative senator cocked his head and reconsidered the remark as the crowd chuckled. "Okay," he conceded with a smile, "But I wish I could sing like that."

Brownback, who dropped out of the presidential race in October, is now stumping full force for Senate colleague McCain here in Iowa. The McCain campaign hopes to harvest support from former Brownback supporters, many of them Christian pro-life conservatives.

And no one can say that the man from Kansas doesn't have a sense of humor about it. "Many candidates enter and few leave Iowa," he told members of the Iowa State Association of Counties. "I should know. I'm one of them."

Brownback told NBC/NJ after his remarks that there's a "certain wistfulness" to campaigning on a former rival's behalf, but he hopes that his endorsement of McCain will give him "some cache with another segment of the electorate." He conceded that many of his former supporters will likely be won over by Baptist charmer Gov. Mike Huckabee -- "yeah, we'll lose some," he said --  but added that Huckabee suffers from weakness on foreign and economic policy experience.

All he wants, he said, is to makes sure that McCain isn't overlooked as Iowans consider their choices for January. "I just hope people give him a second look."

Brownback says that he came out of his failed bid for the presidency "a better man." But for now, he seems to be enjoying going to bat for his longtime Senate colleague.

And being a US senator ain't half bad either. "It's a great gig," he told the crowd today. "You should try it sometime."

McCain must have promised Brownback the VP spot if he wins.  If not that, then a chance to bomb Iran.
Hard to tell which is shit and which is shinola!
I have always liked McCain.  I may not agree with him on a lot of his positions, but I think he is a good man with a lot of experience, and not just that of being a POW.  I'd certainly prefer him to Rudy or Romney...not because I think he would be easier to beat, but because I think he is of a higher quality.
I would also like to run as McCain's running mate, oh wait, I can't...ouch! It's too darn hot down here!
Brownback and what just happened to the teacher in sudan are reasons why I will never vote for a religious extemist here and right now that includes the most of the rep candidates...religion is based upon fear and ignorance which we've already had 7 years of thank you
As a life long Republican there are a few areas that McCain and I do not agree on, but his character and integrity more than compensate for this as far as I am concerned.  There is not a more experienced candidate from either party seeking the presidency nor is there a candidate who can better reunite our country which is being torn apart along traditional party lines.
Anyone interested in what Huckabee is really like face to face should try this funny (but it actually happened) column:

Ineed to know about obama's preparation  for public office from childhood thru adulthood . The effect of his muslim upbringing.Has the issues of drugs and alcohol helped him in any way. Hillary's records are clear from  gutting fishes in alaska to issues of poverty. I dont need to know what he may believe about Hillary. JUST WHAT HE CAN DO !!!!!!!Thanks.
John McCain is to old and too angry to be President of the United States. He proved that last night. Really, he should just retire. The people are tired of him.
dr sharon...

i suggest you visit his website, then.

you don't want any crazy opinions from all these backseat drivers at First Read if you're lookin for facts.
John barely contained his anger last night. The if looks could kill comes to mind.Yes he should retire and quiiiit thinking of himself as president.Jerry Falwell is not here for John to snuggle up to anymore. When John sucked up to the religous right, that had pilloried him against George B,it was quite nauseating.

Only people in love with the neocon lie are tired of him.  Except for not reaching across the table and slapping the crap out of that obnoxious, arrogant, stupid and mouthy New England Texan in 1999, he's OK with me.
Whether you clear out a room with a boring speech or a nasally song, the effect is the same.
Rick in WS, NC ... seriously?

G.W.Bush and his 'cronies' are a bunch of radical Christian extremists that would give you prison or beat you with a bamboo cane because you committed the 'blasphemy' of naming a stuffed animal 'Jesus'?

Really?

I'm thankful that the Constitution protects ALL people who believe in 'religion' from intolerant bigots like yourself.
I think John McCain is probably the most honorable person running for president.  In years past I would have voted for him in a heartbeat, but I was against the Iraq war from the start and my gut feelings have been justified in being against the Iraq war.  I can not support anyone that believes this war was right.
Mr. Finn:

The fact that John McCain could even survive being a POW is a testament to his will to live.  In this war-torn world of ours, I would much rather have a president with that experience than a neatly-coiffed and designer-suited woman whose only claim to fame is remaining with a serial cheater husband (nice role model!!) who isn't even that good-looking.....

AHHHH Babs and Bill back in the Lincoln bedroom, didn't hillary throw her out when Babs spent the night with Bill while she was out of town LMAO
painting any group with broad brush strokes is a bad thing. i would consider myself evengelical christian but with a decidedly progressive bent - see Jon Bell, Nooma, Jim Wallace, etc. i STRONGLY disagree with Bush, feeling that compassionate conservatism was merely a Rove lymric for electability and that everything went out the window when war became the primary vocation for our commander in chief. and tax breaks don't make one compassionate. service does. get out and feed the poor, volunteer, get involved without expecting anything in return. my right wing brothers and sisters or so quick on the right to life concept, but act as though that only matters from the point of conception to the point of delivery. after that, good luck kiddo you're on your own. sanctity of life is valid from cradle to grave, and we should never ever be the ones to hasten our fellow humans to the end, either through our negligence or our deliberate acts. so instead of throwing billions and billions into the melee of Iraq, we should be using our vast resources, and what was once our good name as a nation, to attack poverty and hunger worldwide. throw that increased supply into your economic calculation and see what happens. so much waste of life and resources. so what's my point? we need a leader that is a capable moral compass and can actually tell this nation what it needs versus pandering to special interests. we need a leader that will appoint advisors that will actually tell him/her what they need to hear versus reinforcing any conclusion the president has already come to. i'm not here to be an advocate for any one candidate, just to note that there is more than one way to look at any issue. praise be to any leader we elect that has both a clear moral compass and the humility to accept that they may not know all the answers already.
It really surprises me that Brownback supports McCain who blends into grey matter when it comes to marriage.  Benefits to civil couples does not help promote family values.
John McCain has my vote, I do not agree with all of his policy, but enough to know he is the right person for our country right now. He believes in the people first, and I especially like the line item veto to save us money from those high rollers in congress.  Safty, economy, individual rights, and honesty from the law makers, that is John Mccain.

The John McCain of 2000 is who would make a great candidate today for the Republicans.  Sadly that man was destroyed by Dubya and his cronies in South Carolina.

The McCain of 2008 shares nothing with the fun loving maverick of 2000.  For that reason he will get very few crossovers.

It is still sad to think about all that this man has given to this country and then to think about what Bush did to him.
Carrie in Eastern Iowa (comment above) talks about "a higher quality". Its  refreshing to hear a such deceptively simple term. Quality cannot be manufactured or faked. Its no guarantee, but those who have it will be well served by. I suspect Carrie understands this. By the same token those who don't think about what is truly attractive to voters in the end and when it matters often revert to shooting from the hip and relish being hurtful and naysayers. McCain wasn't hurt last time round as much as educated. These are serious times and he may be serious for just that reason.
