Breakfast with Bloomberg

Posted: Friday, November 30, 2007 10:05 AM by Mark Murray

From NBC/NJ's Aswini Anburajan
NEW YORK, NY -- Obama and New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg met for breakfast this morning, an unexpected encounter that was publicly announced around 3:00 am ET.

Press gathered outside a window of "The Luncheonette" on 50th Street between 3rd Avenue and Lexington to watch the two politicians have breakfast. Though the mob of press assembled couldn't hear anything through the plexiglass, Bloomberg and Obama spoke for at least 40 minutes over coffee, tea, eggs, and bacon -- and from the looks of it, the conversation appeared serious and earnest.

From our vantage point, it appeared that the mayor likes to put a "liberal" amount of salt on his eggs. Senator Obama appears to prefer tea over a cup of joe in the morning.

The men shared a couple of laughs towards the end of the breakfast. Obama picked up the check of about $11 ,and left a $10 tip on the table. The manager of The Luncheonette said the place was no stranger to politicians: Giuliani frequently stops in, and President Carter also has made a visit.

The mayor's office stressed that he has met with almost all of the candidates running for office, but could not confirm if he had such a public "private" meeting with anyone else running for president. The last time the mayor met with Sen. Clinton was on September 11th, when the two spoke privately backstage.

The meeting between the two has fueled speculation about whom Bloomberg -- who has said that he will not run for president -- might endorse in this election. However, his press aides would not entertain any such question. The mayor has publicly said that he wants to play a role in the presidential race by bringing awareness to important social issues.

This is the second prominent meeting that Obama has had with a well-known New Yorker. Last night, he met with Al Sharpton at Sylvia's Restaurant in Harlem before his fundraiser at the Apollo. The two discussed the importance of hate crimes legislation, and Sharpton reported that though he hasn't decided on who to endorse yet -- though he's moving closer to a decision.

Bloomberg may be looking at who to endorse and what each candidate is like in order to decide if to run.  Say, he is not impressed with and feels uncomfortable about one person who gets the nomination - that may sway his decision of whether to run.
you can get coffee, tea, eggs, and bacon for $11 in New York? Who knew?
Bloomberg's endorsement, if he made one of the democrat candidates, would be imprortant to me, because Bloomberg's judgment, as exemplified by how well he's done as NYC Mayor [way better that Rudy btw], consequently carries a lot of weight for me.  As a Hillary supporter, I would be swayed to the Obama camp should Bloomberg endorse him.
Now obama has openly stated that Bill has a job in his admin. . I told you guys Bill is on the team . Man bill clinton and Obama working together in the white house ,I like it .Think of how much he can get done without Hill looking over his back and worring about who he is screwing.
"... then he reached into the American wallet pulled out $21 million. Paid $11 million for services and left $10 million on the table..."

Yep, he's a democrat.
A Bloomberg / Obama ticket would be simply unstoppable.
Released Today: Iowa - Obama 27%, Clinton 25%, Edwards 23%

Bloomberg, VP.  Count it!
OH my God Obama drinks TEA!!!
Bloomberg / Obama ?

You dream it. Bloomberg is not and will not endorse Obama, get over it. May teach him some lessons for sure. "Wait for some years til you are more experinced to handle this country"
IF OBAMA CAN APPEAL TO BLACKS TO VOTE FOR HIM BECAUSE HE IS BLACK, THEN I CAN VOTE AGAINST HIM BECAUSE HE IS BLACK.
There you go Carrie, Clinton has stories about her laugh, Obama drinks tea.  I mean, we had a party in which we dressed up as indians and officially as a country switched to coffee.  *Sarcasm--How much more unAmerican can this guy get?  Tune in next week for the rice vs. noodles story.  I actually take the position that all this information is relevant for the media to spit out, and the voters can decide what they care about.

And thanks to that NPR story awhile back about Clinton and the tip, which I still don't know what to make of it, we get to hear about the tip in every restaurant.  I would laugh if a campaign left 10% citing poor service.  Does any have the stones?
What an exciting article.  Please, please, please do keep us informed with whom Obama, Edwards, or Clinton have breakfast each morning ...that's so important...but thank you so much, so much, for letting us know what they ate, drank, and how much salt...for sure let us know the cost and by all means tell us the amount left for a tip.

It will be a reason to get up each day!  Can't wait.

Great reporting...FIRST READ about two slick politicians who want publicity.  It's a real issue all right.

MSNBC is always there!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just like the idea of our leaders talking to one another, sharing ideas and policies.  I too am surprised you can get breakfast for two for $11, at a classy joint at that.
"'... then he reached into the American wallet pulled out $21 million. Paid $11 million for services and left $10 million on the table...' Yep, he's a democrat."

As an attorney who worked his way through school in the service industry, the fact that Obama is generous while tipping makes him more appealing, not less.  If you seriously think that the fact that Obama tips well means he will be a bad president then you are really disconnected from the working class of this world.
Preferring tea to coffee is actually a foreign policy asset, in an odd way; if you don't think so, you don't realize how integral drinking tea is to sitting down with somebody and talking to them in so many cultures around the world, from Latin America to Islamic nations.  (Personally, I can live without tea and coffee, but that's besides the point.)

What I want to know is what the hell gives Bloomberg the nerve to ever allow ANYONE to pick up a twenty dollar check.  If I were ever fortunate enough to be a billionaire, I certainly wouldn't be that much of a jerk.  Doesn't anyone else find this aspect of the story utterly ridiculous?
"IF OBAMA CAN APPEAL TO BLACKS TO VOTE FOR HIM BECAUSE HE IS BLACK, THEN I CAN VOTE AGAINST HIM BECAUSE HE IS BLACK."

And Republicans claim that racism is dead!!!!  When Barack wins I hope all those who weild the conferderate flag wrap them selves in it and head to South America like so many Traitors did after they lost the Civil War!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Bloomberg and Obama are setting up a 3rd party candidacy. These two would make Ross Perot look like a gnat on an elephants behind. 3rd parties never win though, so who would it favor? My bet is the Democrats are a lot more worried today then the Republicans. There are a lot of Northeast liberals, and liberals in general, on the Democratic side, This will further clutter that field.

Obama drinks tea!!! Bush prefers scotch for breakfast.
I prefer breakfast at Tiffany's.
I'm sure Obama was thinking about Hillary when he left that tip......
As a Hillary supporter, I would be swayed to the Obama camp should Bloomberg endorse him.

Thanks Jim in Tampa, FL. Now you can lower your sheet and get back to doing whatever it is you do when you aren't sharing your ignorance with the world.

Van
just more proof that obama is a republican posing as a democrat.

his social security threats
his medical "plan"
his hanging with bloomie
Maybe Obama was pumping Blomberg on how the investigation of Rudy Giggolo's fiscally conservative use of taxpayers' money to guard him and his sweetie during his Family Values affair was going...
They sure get a lot of dead wood in that diner.
There are reports that the discussion was about Bill Clinton's recent statements on Iraq: http://enewsreference.wordpress.com/2007/11/30/bill-clinton-and-the-credibility-factor/
RH, could you point me to where you found that quote, that is unless it is a place where the sun doesn't shine.

It depends, is yours a long haired or short haired pussy?
"... then he reached into the American wallet pulled out $21 million. Paid $11 million for services and left $10 million on the table..."

Yep, he's a democrat.

Now you're thinking of Murtha.
Pat of Huntington

Stay with Hilary
Flip/Flops of a feather stay together.

PS

Pat you must live in a different NY than everybody else except Van.  Mr. Bloomberg had NY handed to him on a silver platter by Rudy.  It was already fiscally solid.

I beting yours has no hair.

Classless as usual with your comments.  I live on Long Island.  I am very familiar with NY during Rudy and NY During Bloomberg.  I know very well how and why Bloomberg was elected. He was not popular though for his first year.  It wasn't until the middle of his first term that we realized how much we liked Mike, and despised Rudy, and he was handedly re-elected to his current 2d [and unfortunately last] term.  I am glad you now live in NC.  We don't need your nasty kind here anymore.  NY is better that you don't live here anymore.  Redneck narrow minded you are, you belong in that red state.

....much ado about nothing

Endorsements mean nothing.....

Shouldn't this article be in People magazine ?
Let's hear a little more about cleavage....

'...just more proof that obama is a republican posing as a democrat....'

Go back to your home planet
Why don't you post under your own name ?
I'd liked to know more about the breakfast itself. How were the eggs prepared? Was the toast buttered? Does Bloomberg prefer strawberry jam to Smucker's grape jelly?

It's astounding what passes for substantive political news and analysis at MSNBC. Was it really necessary to add to Obama's multitude of inane First Read stories while Mike Gravel and Dennis Kucinich pieces combined haven't broken into the double digits. This is quintessential establishment media.

Just keep up the "good work" MSNBC with your effective blackout on the candidates of merit and sincerity - like Ron Paul, Mike Gravel, and Tom Tancredo.

Um, how much is Iraq costing again? How much has government spending increased under every Republican administration in the last 40 years? Don't believe everything you think.
Um, how much is Iraq costing again?

I dunno. We should check with Nancy and Harry and see how much the Democratic led congress has approved in the last year.
Bloomberg should not run on any Republican or Democratic ticket. We need more options. Even those who do not agree with Bloomberg's positions, but do not see good options available for them should support the effort to break the two party duopoly in the country.
