Rudy, Iowa Christians, a tough sell

Posted: Saturday, December 01, 2007 3:22 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ’s Carrie Dann
DUBUQUE, IA -- It's no secret that Iowa Christian Alliance president Steve Scheffler isn't a Rudy fan. But tonight, within spitting distance of Giuliani’s rival GOP candidate Romney, Scheffler explicitly urged Iowa Christians to oppose Giuliani in the race for the nomination. "If our party nominates this guy," he told a crowd at a Dubuque gathering of the ICA, "we will see a bloodbath at the polls like we've never seen before."

Scheffler went on to slam Giuliani's position on same-sex marriage, life issues and gun rights. "Rudy Giuliani cannot be elected," he said, citing the ex-mayor's differences with social conservatives. "We cannot afford to nominate somebody who's out of touch with the base."

Scheffler made the remarks at a house party here before introducing Romney, who talked values and faith to Christian activists in Eastern Iowa. He did not comment on Scheffler's remarks when he took the mic himself.

The Iowa Christian Alliance has indicated that it will not endorse a candidate in advance of the Iowa caucuses. But it is widely considered to be one of the most influential organizing forces in the state for evangelical conservatives. Campaigns will likely watch the ICA's candidate briefing booklet -- to be released next Wednesday -- with close attention.

If you needed a sign that Giuliani might be in trouble in Iowa, consider this statement from Scheffler; Giuliani "needs to come in fourth place" in Iowa, he said. "Or," he added wistfully, "even worse."

What difference does it make? No matter who goes in, D or R, the deficit will continue to swell, the wall will never be built, the illegal invasion will continue unabated, and the country will march on in a 9/10 daze that can only result in a holocaust here in one form or another.

If only a legit third party candidate who represents the true will of the American public, then I might feel something other than apathy and resignation. Once again I see myself holding my nose as I pull the lever for the lesser of two evils.

If only George S. Patton Jr. was a write-in candidate. It would be nice to finally have someone with testicular fortitude in the White House OTHER than Hillary Clinton!

God help the United States of America.
i am not voting for the first time in my life.  i have come to the conclusion that it really doesnt matter who is in the white house.  Its just two sides of the same evil coin.
Vote against Huckabee and Rudy!
Ron Paul!
I'm an Iowan and a Christian.  This nutjob does not represent me nor any Iowa Christians I know of.  A black eye for Christians everywhere.  If Republicans want to regain strength, it's time to throw guys like this overboard, and let them fester in their irrelevance.
DrudeReport alert!
Any comment linked orm Drudge gets 90% responses from paid political operatives.  Please ignore them all.
Regardless of your opinion(s) one way or the other, do get out and vote.  If all a woman needs to do to make a man happy is show up, so should you... at the voting booth.
IF YOU VOTE HUCKABEE, YOU WILL END UP WITH HILLARY.
Rudy will bring down the GOP if he's the nominee. Romney is the real deal! We need to nominate Romney! Huckabee has NO chance of winning, so why waste a vote on him? A vote for Huckabee IS a vote for Rudy, so don't waste it on Huckabee. VOTE ROMNEY if you want the GOP to beat Hillary.

Look at their RECORDS...all of them...eliminate all the clever sound bites and sarcastic knee-jerk statements and PLEASE just take the time to study the candidate's HISTORICAL VOTING RECORD.  I am a Christian conservative and a strong Ron Paul supporter because I took the time to look into all of them. Your conclusions may be different, who knows...but you should take a look yourself.
Juan, Ft. Lauderdale:

Just because someone doesn't think exactly like you doesn't make them a racist, you ignorant tool.
I beg to differ with these alleged leaders of Christians. I am a Christian, I am extremely conservative. I am anti illegal immingration. I am anti abortion, anti sodomy of either sex, anti higher taxes, anti welfare, and pro marriage, pro gun, and pro captial punishment but I am sick of media inferring Dobson or anyone else speaks for me as a Christian. I will make my own mind up come November next year and these men are making Christians hated just as Falwell did. They no more speak or represent me than Jackson and Sharpton speaks for blacks.  These two latters predjudices whites against Blacks. These so call Christians predjudice people against Christians.  Blood bath indeed!  What an exspression for a professed leader of those who follow the Prince of Peace. They speak evil of the leaders of their people.  This we are not allowed to do as Christians.
I find it funny that people get all bent out of shape about this.  Imagine this - a pro-life Dem running for President!  What would the Deb "base" have to say about that?

Rudy is so far to the left on important issues you can't tell him from Hildebeast.
RUDY MUST NOT BE NOMINATED!
A Reagan Republican?  Let's see, under President Reagan I don't remember abortion being restricted.  Under President Reagan I don't remember prayer being returned to school.  Under President Reagan I don't remember him wearing his religion on his sleeve to champion the evangelical movement.

President Reagan rode the fiscal conservatism horse and the strong national defense horse.  Sounds an awful lot like Rudy Giluiani to me.  Social conservatives, Rudy will not do anything different than Reagan did on social issues.  Hillary/Obama will.  Rudy will advance fiscal conservatism.  Hillary/Obama won't.  Rudy will aggressively defend this nation against radical Islam.  Hillary/Obama won't.

Please, support your primary candidate as strongly as you can, knock on doors delivering flyers, make phone calls to get out the vote, lick envelopes, write checks.  Do everything possible to help your preferred candidate win the primary.  But, if at the end of the day your candidate does not win, you will elect Hillary who WILL repeal the partial birth abortion ban, who WILL repeal parental notification laws, who WILL repeal waiting periods, who WILL gut any public display of God including ridding public squares of Christmas displays, who WILL legalize gay marriage.  She will do all of this by appointing more ACLU Ruth Ginsberg judges to the Supreme Court, and she will fill the swing judge Stevens' seat.

You are playing a high stakes game in sitting out the election out of your dislike for any of the Republican nominees.  Everything that you care about WILL be changed for the worse under Hillary/Obama.  In contrast, with Rudy the worst you get is status quo, which is exactly what Reagan left you with.  Do not be reckless with your vote if you don't get your way in the primary.
Josh, would you prefer to have the terrorists here attacking civilians?  I have voted Republican for Prez. since 1988, but am so disgusted by all of these clowns I just might go with the third party canidate.  If Hillary gets in she will make such a mess, maybe a real conservative will run in 2012.  I am tired of compromising and getting presidents Bush.  He is about as conservative as Guliani when you get right down to it - he is just liberal on different issues.
The only true conservative running for president as a Republican or Democract is Ron Paul and that's who I support.  If anyone other than Paul is the Republican nominee then whoever is the Democract nominee is going to win because of the mess in Iraq.  Paul has the support of many other independant and libertarian voters and that translates to votes that will keep someone like Hillary from being the next president.
Huckster Huckabee is a RINO flim-flam man and Bush clone owned lock, stock, and barrel by the illegal alien employing Tyson Food Mob that wants open borders and SHAMnesty. His disingenuous support for illegal aliens and SHAMnesty has nothing to do with his claims of "Christian compassion" and everything to do with getting as much cheap slave labor for his greedy Tyson benefactors as possible.

Don't drink Huckster Huckabee's Kool-Aid. Rockefeller RINO Bush ran as a Reaganite too. Romney is as close to a Reaganite there is among the first tier candidates and forget Rudy-he's worse than Huckster Huckabee.
Scheffler is exactly right. If Rudy is nominated, the Christian evangelicals will stay away in droves just as 5 million of them did in 2000 when Bush's drunk driving episode 20 years ago came to light. If all those folks stayed away over something that occurred 20 years ago, what will happen when an unfaithful to his wife, homosexual rights, pro-abortion candidate is on the ballot! Thing is, he will destroy the rest of the ticket below him since Christian conservatives will stay away and won't be there to vote for those offices either. Scheffler got it right. I trust the GOP won't be so stupid.
As a fiscal conservative and small business owner, I will not vote for Huckabee.  Period. If he is on the nominee, I will stay home and not waste my time.

I have usually voted for the Republican candidate because of his position on fiscal issues and have no strong feelings on the social issues these conservative Christians hold so dear.

Dear Mr.Sheffler vote for Mr. Giuliani. He said he will nomimate Conservative Supreme Court Judges. They are the only ones who have the power to changed the laws of our Land. The rest is division and confusion of the Republican BASE .The world is not perfect and we have to do the best we can. Martha
In Kansas, Republicans are voting Democrat to get rid of the right-wing evangelical bastards. (look up Phil Kline and see the dirty tricks the Republicans pulled in Kansas this year)
Huckabee is only real social, fiscal and security leader in the running.  Don't succumb to anyone telling you that your vote for Huckabee is a wasted one. This couldn't be further from the truth.
So we oppose Rudy as christians, and we elect Satan in disguise Hillary, who will appoint judges to the supreme court that will continue to kill the unborn. What have we gained. Wake up Americans.
Oh puhleeeze, people.  Rudy Giuliani is the better of all the GOP field.  He's strong, articulate and very intelligent.  He'll bring this nation together and give the liberals plenty of bloody noses.
Rudy doesn't need to win Iowa to get the nomination!

Rudy wouldn't be the first president to lose Iowa in the primaries!

Rudy can win without Christian conservatives!
Actually, according to a Dick Morris article, Mike Huckabee is a fiscal conservative -
http://www.townhall.com/columnists/DickMorrisandEileenMcGann/2007/11/28/mike_huckabee_is_a_fiscal_conservative. The other press reports trying label him as tax and spend were incorrect.
So basically we should vote for someone in the primaries who holds our beliefs even though they stand no chance against Hillary?  Shouldn't the ultimate prize be putting a republican in that can beat Hillary and Socialism?

These crackhead republicans are almost as bad as the liberals.  They need to understand that if a democrat wins it doesn't matter who you voted for in the primaries.  You are going to get much much worse than Rudy could ever be.
I'm a believer in God. I believe God gives us our "choice". So we should think long and hard to put the correct person in the presidents chair.
I was at the house party in DBQ that night. I was leaning towards Huckabee. I left with Romney yard signs. Christian or not, the things he said he was  mirroring Huckabee EXCEPT being accommidating to the Illegal Aliens here already like he is in Arkansas. I want them out, I want the border secure and I want an honest moral man in this office.
Ron Paul is a great man, but won't get the nod.
Rudy is exactly like what Steve Scheffler said he is. This country can't take more of ME ME ME, like him or Hillary. We need someone more concerned about the country, war, borders and all of our founding fathers ideas in the consitution expressing what "rights" we have vs what the Rudys and the Dem's want for us. Them running the show.
And why is it that people here attack good christians who have done the homework on the issues and the candidates. The country needs better people to speak out. Not the crap you see above written by people who couldn't even pass the citizen test to get here legally, if not having been "BORN" here.
Thompson and McCain brought us the McCain/Feingold bill. WRONG!!!! That was gov'nt telling us to shut up.
Ron Paul- too tough for most "moderate" to swallow.
Huckabee- good choice, but soft on our aliens here
Bottom line? A good man, married to one women, belives in strong borders, laws, schools. Abortion/Guns/God/Patriotism are also included. A complete package! Isn't that what we conservitives want and the moderates someone they too can get behind?
And to think I almost danced with the wrong candidate except someone invited me to hear Mitt.
Thanks to John W. and to Ron H. for this experiance!!

Guliani will make Goldwater/Johnson look like a squeeker.  The early primary cycle Obame forced everybody into means Rudy may well be nominated.  Why giving a few uplifting speeches after your city is attacked makes you fit to be pres I don't get.  Anybody who believes him on the SCOTUS nominations is insane or stupid. If it wasn't for the fact the HRC will be the worst Pres in history, I would say this means the end of the GOP.  As it is, maybe we will just decide on a monarchy instead and at least get some laughs.
As a Jesus follower in New Hampshire, I'm voting for a presendent, not pastor.  Rudy's a proven leader who cleaned up NYC.  If he gets the nomination, he'll likely choose Huckabee as his running mate to pacify some of my one-issue voter friends.  He'll pull in lots of independents and some democrats and I predict will beat Hillary handily...

Don't believe one Iowan's "bloodbath" rant represents most thinking Christians.
Conservative Chrsitians cannot vote for Giuliani.  Those who say they are conservative Christians and will vote for him are mistaken about what a Christian is.  They're putting their wallet ahead of their faith and will eventually lose both.

If Giuliani supporters think they can win without the Christian vote, they'll find out differently next Fall.  The key is to find a candidate that all of us can support.  If that cannot be done, look forward to having Bill back in the Whitehouse for at least 4 years.

God Bless, have a good day.
As someone who is not in sync' with Rudy on social issues, I have decided that he is the leader we need at this time in our country. This man may have his opinion but it is falling on deaf ears. Simply put, the GOP can not allow Her royal Highness, HRC to become President and we won't. Giuliani/Huckabee..08!
Per Dick Morris, Mike Huckabee is a fiscal conservative. You can read his article at:

It's been a long time coming. FINALLY the reichwing is crumbling under the weight of it's own hypocrisy. We've watched thirty years of lies take the American dream to the very edge of death. Let's all hope that they keep it up, eating their own young for another year.
If two former wives couldn't trust him why should we?
"Bloodbath" was an unfortunate choice of terms.

Obviously he means the Republican Ticket will get "wiped out" by Hillary if Rudy is nominated because the base won't turn out (as in 2006).

This really is a vigorous election year.  Mainly because Hillary is such a polarizing figure.  Either you adore her or despise her, there is no middle ground.

Anyway, I just got back from the future and Romney wins the White House in 2008 with 54% of the vote, so relax.

I am a Bible-believing Christian who has no problem supporting Giuliani in the general election.  Even if Rudy is not in line with me on social issues, he's far better than anything the Democrats offer. I'm a McCain man in the primaries, though.
Are you defeatists KIDDING?
if Hillary is nominated then you MUST get every aunt, uncle, brother sistet and every person you know to register and VOTE REPUBLICIAN.   if you dont-God help America!
Ron Paul is the only good answer here. You can not find a man with more integrity than Ron Paul. He actions speak well of his ideals. Have you watched some of the videos on youtube of the meetups and conventions that Ron Paul has spoken at? The crowds are so enthusiastic and hungry for his message that it is contagious. I find myself searching the web over and over again for the latest Ron Paul tidbit, news, or video blog. This isn't typical for me so I know that if I have caught the vision many others have as well. If MSM wants ratings and viewers they would be wise to get informed. The Internet is quickly making them irrelevant.
The Dems control both sides of the House and promised to end the war. Do you really want them in the White House?
It seems as if "holier than thou" is a summary condition that lib's like to use when describing Christians, so if standing on ones Principles is holier than thou which is where Christians are usually coming from than, Yep, you got it. If you don't stand for something you fall for anything!  Secret underware? Mormon doctrine is radically different from trad Christian theology.  Most Americans couldn't tell you the difference between Catholic, Protestant, or Muslim doctrines even though they may be one or the other.  I wouldn't vote for Hillary if I had a gun to my head, and after her election that won't be an issue.  If Guiliani is the R candidate I will sit out.  Ron Paul is the only one of the lot that understands that the issues are defined in the constitution, but like theology, most Americans don't understand the electorial college.  I believe we will continue down the road of corporate ownership of the United States Government regardless of who is elected.  The "People" only think they have a choice, that one or another candidate really matters. Oh, and bloodbath, it's a metaphore!
If Ron Paul isn't nominated, then the Republicans deserve the bloodbath. They have forgotten what it is to be a republican.
Huckabee and Giuliani are both as liberal as Republicans can get.  All REAL conservatives should support Romney.
The bloodbath in Irag is not nearly as bad as the bloodbath in Philadelphia.  36 U.S. troops were killed in Iraq in November, 63 citizens of the city of brotherly love died during the same period.  Perhaps Gen. Petraeus can make a detour on the way home and implement a surge their too.
As a lifelong republican, I'm as digusted as one gets with this administration.  I believe Bush's a principled ideologue who sticks with his conviction, unlike any democrat running, albeit his principals are flawed as are his goals.  Like mostly every other American after 9/11 I strongly supported him. Now I can't wait for Rudy to win the election and clean up another mess.  For you bible thumping, koran and torah guided people, while this country is based on religious freedoms, it means by design, we are a nation that should not be told by any religious group how to behave, that's why we have legislatures.
Hillary and Giuliani are the same. It's that simple.
Don't listen to the fear mongers out there. The heart of America is socially conservative- and I for one am tired of having republican candidates appeal to us every 4 years- and then going off and doing whatever they want. What happened to Terri Schivo? Where is a pro life constitutional ammendment? People of faith have to have the courage of their convictions and support SoCon candidates- and let the chips fall where they may.I for one do not doubt that God will turn our faith in Huckabee, or Pat Robertson, and any other real values conservative into a mighty fortress- you should beleive it too. Vote for your values- don't vote out of fear.
Who cares.  Iowa is a blue state anyway.  Christian Republicans:  get your act together before you worry about who the nominee is.  You've got Democrats running your entire state.  Fix your own house.
Bloodbath? I'm a Democrat as are most of my friends, and we will be voting for Rudy. You remember us Regan democrats? We'll here come the Giuliani democrats. Hopefully you ultra conservative religious wacko's won't screw it up for the rest of us.
