More on those boos

From NBC/NJ’s Carrie Dann
DES MOINES, IA -- Clinton is probably glad she wasn't here at the Heartland Presidential Forum to hear the boos from one prominent group in attendance. Heavy booing by members of the Illinois Coalition of Immigrant and Refugee Rights, a pro-immigration group based in Chicago, drowned out Clinton's phone response to a question from one of their members. Clinton spoke via phone because of ice storms here and her dealing with yesterday's hostage situation at one of her New Hampshire offices.

Asked by Coalition member Billy Lawless if she would address immigration reform during her first 100 days in office, Clinton did not offer a definite "yes," saying, “Well, you've got to get the Congress to pass the legislation." As hoots crescendoed from the rear of the room, she continued, "The president can do as much as possible, which I will do."

Coalition staff member Ricardo Serrano described the Chicago-based group as a pro-immigrant rights coalition of ethnic and service organizations throughout the state of Illinois. The organization has a heavy Hispanic representation but also includes members of European and Asian groups. Lawless, the man who asked the question that prompted the boos, is an Irish immigrant.

Serrano said that the group has galvanized around opposition to Illinois congressman Rahm Emmanuel, who "pulled a 180 on us" by failing on his promise to push comprehensive immigration reform through the Congress earlier this year. Serrano is concerned that Clinton's recent remarks on drivers' licenses for illegals -- on which he says she has "stumbled, if not completely backtracked" -- might indicate her willingness to brush off immigrant communities.

It's unclear if Clinton could hear the negative reaction over her telephone connection, which organizers explained was a one-way feed. Earlier in Clinton's address, a moderator explained to the crowd that Clinton couldn't hear prompting to cut off an answer that went over her two-minute limit.

"We respectfully request that you restrict your response to two minutes," clarified the moderator after the senator's first response.

"Yes ma'am," came Clinton's crackly response over the speakerphone.

Hillary reminds me of my late sister Mary, the "Ogress of Misery", whom I love dearly.
And those are the type of bullcrap answers that should sink her candidacy. Hypothesize for us a bit, Mrs. Clinton. We can handle it.
another happy day for clintonm hate to be show again. I am going to enjoy another pop corn and pop day.
all illegal aliens need to get out of the US they are a security concern. I think The US needs to ship them back to their own Countries.
As much as I dislike Hillary she was smart not to pander to the left wing LaRaza crowd that was imported from Illinois. In fact it wouldn't surprise me if Hillary ducked this forum on purpose because it was so left wing. These are the flat out open borders crowd who want free medical care for illegal immigrants.Kookcinich was laughed off the stage by these kooks which tells you just how unhinged they are.
right answer for the right question. I saw it on the TV. I really did not understand the boos. She said she will do as much as possible for a comprehensive Immigration policy. I think the idiots up there do not understand the way our laws are enacted in our country. Really if you do not have such a civic sense, please leave our country.
How do you propose we identify all of the Canadian illegal aliens, or do you just want to get rid of the ones to the south.   Good thing the Mexican's didn't kick the American when we were illegal in their country and before we took over their lands.  We can give it, but we can't take it.
Some of the boo's may have been because of the heavy association Emmanuel has with the Clintons.  He may say he is not picking in this race but, only a fool would think he is not behind Hillary 100%.
And, let me say, being from Illinois, clinton has a hard road with this state which is very very much Obama's.
This is just another example of how far advanced we Conservatives are over the lefty Liberals.  We have known for 15 years that Hillary is a lying sack, but the libs are just starting to realize it now.  Not that it gives us much common ground, but its good to see you guys are finally starting to catch up to us.
Hillary is slow and reluctant to tow the Democrat line for amnesty!
Was I better off under a Clinton Administration? Hell Yea! At least we get one good deal with Madam President: A balanced buget! I only know one other modern day president who left office with a balanced buget and his name was CLINTON. It's about the economy again stupid!
It seems kind of convienent that Ms. Clinton was avoiding attending the Iowa forums.  In light of the plants that her campaign has placed in other appearances, further investigation of whether there was any connection between her campaign staff and the alleged "terrorist" in New Hampshire seems warranted.  She obviously will attempt to spin her absence as her own private war on terror.
"It is going to be ME."  Hillary's quote of the week.

She doesn't have to play by the two minute rule, don't cha know?
The whole country is booing Hillary. When is she going to get the hint?
Everyone knows the fact that it was the weather ( if you watch TV special report about severe weather) Hillary can not go to the meeting. She doesn't back of anything. She has been through all kinds, so please do not misrepresent her again. Cheap shot.
I couldn't see a reason for the booing, either.  She gave the best answer she could give.  That she would do all that was possible, and she was right that Congress would have to pass something.  That's the way the country works.  Sure, she could have said she would pass comprehensive reform in her first 100 days, but that would be completely crazy.  Then, when it doesn't happen (because it's just not possible) she will be accused of lying and making empty promises to get elected.  She gave the smart, appropriate answer.

Meanwhile, I'm sure a significant portion of the immigrant forum (as is often true with most immigrant reform "forums") does not have the legal right to vote, i.e. are not U.S citizens.
If the Repubs won't get behind enforcement-based, comprehensive immigration reform backed by Bush and Rove, and the Dems won't get behind progressive immigration reform that puts real worker protections into place and figures out how to allow those who have contributed so much to this country a pathway to citizenship, then who exactly IS going to push real immigration reform forward??? Are we doomed to the bafoonery of Lou Dobbs and his cohorts looking to score cheap political points like they did last time with gay marriage? Don't we deserve more than this from our "news," our political process, and our president?

Good for the immigrant coalition for asking Hillary to stand up for her party's values.
I'm glad Hillary was put in her place finally, for caving into the anti-migrant hate of the U.S.
Agree with those who say the boos were unwarranted.  The illegal immigrant sob stories lost me pretty quickly.  Whole forum was full of sob stories.
Serrano is concerned that Clinton's recent remarks on drivers' licenses for illegals -- on which he says she has "stumbled, if not completely backtracked" -- might indicate her willingness to brush off immigrant communities.

Not immigrant communities, just illegals. What is wrong with that? It is ridiculous that some politicians refuse to recognize the difference between an illegal and a legitimate immigrant. Since Hillary's health care plan would mandate all Americans to have health coverage or be punished under the law, I would like to know what penalties she proposes for illegals who don't have coverage? Will we also have to issue free health insurance with a drivers license to illegals while punishing legal citizens.
Senator Clinton responded to this question in the same way she did in the Philadelphia debate and the audience responded inkind. http://enewsreference.wordpress.com/2007/12/02/hillary-clinton-booed-in-iowa/
The last thing we need is someone who shouts back "YEAH!" to every impractical populist demand. This isn't Argentina. She was better off getting a few "boo"s than giving an idiotic lie as an answer.
Hillary's poll numbers are sinking fast.  In Iowa, the last five polls are Obama +4, +3, +2, tie, Clinton +2.  The Des Moines Register, the best respected poll, finds Obama up 3 points.

The last two polls have her lead in NH down to 7%.  Historically a win in Iowa produces a 14% swing.

Finally, Rasmussen's latest national poll has her lead down to 9% from the 20's.
Expecting a candidate to make that kind of process is foolish.  Get immigration reform through Congress is going to take a lot of work and will require spending a great deal of political capital.  Frankly, I would rather see President Clinton work on health care before immigration.

-->>-->>-->> How'd ya figure that out, big boy? By counting yourself as "the whole country"??? LOL!
If she sincerely cared about the country she wouldn't be running.
Anyone who has to :plant" people in the audience to answer prepared questions certainly is misleading the public and shows their (her) inability to handle our national problems, especially those that she wants to dodge and not show her ignorance.

She skillfully uses her legal background to take unfair advantage of the Country for her personal gain - something that a non-Lawyer would go to jail for !!
I have to agree with John from PA, my financial life was *MUCH* better under the Clinton administration.  Remember this thing called a budget SURPLUS?  And the repulicans are supposed to be the fiscally responsible party?
BOO-BOO-BOO-BOO to Barak Obama for bussing in the CHicago mob to be so vocal for him.

Mr. holier than thou Obama plays down and dirty right in the mud with the Chicago mob.

He's bussed in the mob for the JJ dinner...as everyone saw including Joe BIden who said..hello Chicage.

Now the pious Mr. Obama is trying to use a play right out of Karl Rove's REPUBLICan handbook to try to use OUT OF STATE college students to be bussed to Iowa to caucus for him thus tilting the IOWA caucus in his favor.

TRUSHWORTHY????????????????????
TRUSTWORTHY???????????????

Mr. Obama you are a hypocrite.

I'm definitely voting for anybody but YOU.
The Democrats are going to be impaled on the issue of alien amnesty.  Only 6% of the 2004 vote was from hispanics!  They better get on the correct side of this issue real soon.
Rita, I'm surprised by the push-back Clinton got on that statement. When I first heard it, it just struck me as the optimism a candidate has to show. Granted, they way she said it rubbed me a little wrong, but then I'm frequently bothered by her tone, and her supporters don't seem to be.

I guess a candidate needs to be optimistic without being cocky. Maybe she crossed the line, but by less than I think the responses to her statement indicate.

I think its not so much what she said, but a lot of folks are just tiring of her, and now looking to nitpick anything, which is a terrible dynamic to have 30-some days before Iowa.
How much does Chuck Todd get paid to be a shill for Hillary (not Rodham) Clinton? It was unclear if she could hear the booing? She heard it.

YOU are a liar. She is a liar. You are a coward and a traitor to the United States of America. She is a coward and a traitor to the United States of America.

Your parents must be so proud to know they produced such a failure, Mr. Todd.
"Hypothesize for us a bit, Mrs. Clinton. We can handle it.

Pete Caloger Bushkill, PA (Sent Saturday, December 01, 2007 7:37 PM)"

Peter, I agree. This evasiveness is not as politically savvy as she seems to think it is. This is going to backfire on her. She is playing the I'm experienced, I know best, parent role that people are sick of after this current reign of PNAC conservatism.
I am an independent voter--I have not supported any candidate on this blog, but I honestly believe that all this Hillary bashing, booing her answers at an
event, could very easily backfire on those who seem to have such dislike of her.  Such rude treatment violates the spirit of fairness that many of us Americans consider important. Too much of this offensive behavior could easily make some voters think Senator Clinton is being poorly treated and trun some votes in her favor.  Hard to explain, but that booing really rubbed me the wrong way.
Jade Solmann where is that country that is booing Clinton I haven't heard a single boo in my part of the country except for some republicans who are afraid she may roll back some fat cat tax cuts.
Jade Solmann, Oceanview CA, I think you have a wishful thinking about the whole country booing Hillary. It may well be the opposit.

Asked by Coalition member Billy Lawless if she would address immigration reform during her first 100 days in office, Clinton did not offer a definite "yes,"

She has not given a definite answer to anything since she announced she was running for President.
Deport every damned one of them,or give me back my tax dollars!!
Dear Joe,
Thanks for link to accurate recounting of Tancredo's willingness to exploit cheap illegal labor just as enthusiastically as the next guy.  Here's an excerpt...

When Tancredo hired a construction crew to transform his drab basement into a high-tech pleasure den in October 2001, however, he did not express concern that only two of its members spoke English. Nor did he bother to check the workers’ documentation to see if they were legal residents of the United States. Had Tancredo done so, he would have learned that most of the crew consisted of undocumented immigrants, or “criminal aliens” as he likes to call them. Instead, Tancredo paid the crew $60,000 for its labor and waited innocently for the completion of his elaborate entertainment complex.

During the renovation process, two illegal workers hired by Tancredo were alerted to his reputation for immigrant bashing. They went straight to the Denver Post to complain. Tancredo “doesn't want us here, but he'll take advantage of our sweat and our labor,” one of the workers complained to the Post on September 19, 2002. “It's just not right.”...

This is an accurate story that is old news here in Colorado and Tancredo opponents here have always wondered why we have not been able to get the media to focus much on this story.

Bottom line, Tancredo is using immigration to grandstand and carve out a niche for himself that I'm sure he hopes will continue to provide him with fame and a meal ticket long after his phony presidential bid is over and he has left his undistinguished career in congress.

I remember that when he was confronted with this at the time, his excuse was that the contractor had hired the crew and it wasn't his responsibility.  You'd kind of think that a politician as upset over illegal immigration as he purports to be (he also is against most LEGAL immigration.  He's one of those who promote fear of our pure white culture being polluted.  Kind of odd for a  descendent of Italian immigrants) might ask a question or two about all those non-English speaking workers remodeling his basement.

Apparently a low bid was all it took to get Tancredo to default to "Don't ask. Don't tell" mode, just like other  employers do when it helps their bottom line.

Of course that doesn't stop him and his ilk from getting up on their high horses about it.  Railing against illegals, invoking security concerns, keeping the laws in place but ignoring them so they can take advantage of cheap imported labor with no rights to get around the law of supply and demand in the labor market that would otherwise force them to pay what American citizens demand, is exactly the way they like it.

Trust me, Tancredo and his supporters LOVE illegal immigrants.  Where would their bottom line and his political career be without them?

They also love to paint Dems as being all for open borders and a free ride for all illegals, not at all  an accurate depiction of the attitude of the average hard working Dem who cares about American jobs and American security a lot more than these hypocrites do.

The republican congress was responsible for the good economy, the president doesnt make laws, he was smart enough to go along with the repubs, or too busy corrupting the young interns, with cigars, what a sickie.
The Boos were not a valid response. I won't boo a candidate for not promising to pass a bill. Presidents can't always control congresses. What was she supposed to say?
On the other hand, politicians beware, you can demonize undocumented immigrants all you want thinking you can offend the one group in this country that can't vote. Remember, they have family and friends who can vote for you. If there are 12 million undocumented immigrants here, they have to be at least that many citizen family and friends. That's a pretty big voting block and nothing motivates someone like going after their family.
Remember the marches of 2006, those weren't all undocumented immigrants, most of them are too scared to attend public events like that. What we saw were probably the family and friends of these people.
//It may well be the opposit. //

Isn't an "opposit" a female opossum?

Community leaders on the call booed because Hillary refused to commit to pushing forward humane immigration reform - as president she would have the power to advocate for such reform and at least try to encourage Congress to grow a spine and do something. Americans want to see fair and humane immigration reform, it's a debate that is doing too much damage to our society and needs to be resolved for the wellbeing of both citizens and non-citizens. Shame on Clinton and the other democratic candidates for waffling on such an important issue.
i read some of the things that are being said about the various candidates. some is factual, which should be debated in this forum. some other things that are being said are just venomous rumors or slant for one's candidate. accusations of people being bused in from other places on behalf of a candidate, staged hostage situations and more. if we allow ourselves to ponder such venomous and vile slander how do we effectively see the actual truth to make the right decisions? does actual voting records count? does proof of one's stance count? I don't get the personal smears on any of the candidates. i understand discussing the issues of right and wrong on their part. i understand expressing the difference in point of views that everyone has with each others candidate. i just don't understand how spewing lies, slanderous rumors, insulting each other, personal attacks on basically decent people, just making up things in one head so that they can justify their dislike of a candidate or calling names lends any credence to making a good, factual or proper decision towards who will be the next president of the United States of America. How can we get it right if we move away from actuality, facts and reality? I thought we as americans were better than that. I guess Dick Cheney's form of politics has permeated the american public more than i had realized. We are in trouble as a country if we don't get serious about this process and perform our responsibilities as voters in a true, realistic and fair manner.
It is completely inappropriate for an audience to boo a speaker like that.  If they disagree, fine, and they can get their point across another way.  Other people actually came to the event to hear what Clinton had to say, something those who were rude, deprived them.  I would hope that Clinton or any other candidate would stand up to those smucks.
I don't believe it is inappropriate for an audience to boo a candidate, especially Hillary Clinton. Hillary is getting a complete pass from the media in this country. The only way for the people to express displeasure with Hillary is by doing what they are currently doing, that is, booing. The booing will also more then likely be swept under the rug.
It was disappointing that Hillary couldn't be at the event.  The Heartland Forum gave real people a chance to interact with the candidates, sharing their personal stories and demonstrating how the issues had affected them.  Because she wasn't there in person, it was difficult for Hillary to really understand what was going on at the forum.  These were moving stories that demanded action.  And in the end, the audience sided with the people instead of the politicians.
I thought it was great that we finally got to hear from somebody other than the Talking Heads that have taken over television. It seemed like a genuinely high-energy populist meeting meeting (big hand to the booers... letting a leading candidate know she may not be leading for long if she doesn't address key issues)

The Heartland Presidential Forum was unlike any other. I am thankful to Iowa Citizens for Community Improvement and the Center for Community Change for putting together an event where the people had a voice in politics. That's why this was such an emotionally charged forum.

Real people took the stage and told their personal stories, and the candidates listened. For too long, we have been told that we are on our own, and this forum brought everyone together, making us realize that our fates are linked. Even as a white woman, I know that I am connected to the diverse issues of the people around me. When we no longer have a broken immigration system, our cities and communities will thrive.

With less than a month away from the caucuses, all eyes are on Iowa, and the politics of hope and possibility have returned to put our communities first. This caucus season, community values voters will be the decisive swing block, and the candidates are finally listening to what real people truly value.
