Romney to give 'The Speech' Thursday

Posted: Sunday, December 02, 2007 7:55 PM by Chuck Todd

From NBC/NJ's Erin McPike
A week and a day after the flap over Giuliani's in-office expenses broke, and five days after the Des Moines Register announced Huckabee was leading the Iowa GOP race for the first time, Mitt Romney will on Thursday deliver his long-awaited speech on faith.

The AP reported late Sunday afternoon that the campaign chose George HW Bush's presidential library in Texas as the venue for Thursday's address. The former president will attend, prompting Secret Service attendance and more security than Romney has had at his events in the past. The campaign announced that the former president's attendance doesn't signify an endorsement.

Just this past Wednesday, not more than an hour before the debate, Romney spokesman Kevin Madden said the candidate was still making up his mind - and was "weighing it very heavily."

Romney is currently re-reading Jon Meacham's book, "American Gospel."

Spokesman Kevin Madden added in an e-mail, "Governor Romney felt this was the right time, the right moment. No analysis can interpret perfectly what is truly a personal decision by the governor."

And according to the campaign's statement, “This speech is an opportunity for Governor Romney to share his views on religious liberty, the grand tradition religious tolerance has played in the progress of our nation and how the governor’s own faith would inform his Presidency if he were elected.

“Governor Romney understands that faith is an important issue to many Americans, and he personally feels this moment is the right moment for him to share his views with the nation.

“Governor Romney personally made the decision to deliver this speech sometime last week."

It's a shame that here in the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA Romney even has to deal with religious bigotry - instead of the real issues this country faces.  Will Huckabee have to discuss why Baptists agreed with slavery or why he believes a man can part a sea?
Someone should tell Romney that the problem is not his religion, but his lack of sincerity and honesty. Is there phonier, emptier serious candidate in this campaign?
YAHOOOOO !!

I am a “Mormon” (a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints), and I believe in Jesus Christ.  I am a Christian.  Yet, there are people who say that because I do not believe as THEIR demonination believe, hence – so many religions, so many denominations, than I cannot be a Christian, that I belong to a cult.  Do you know how rude, arrogant, and offensive this is?

Who decides if I am a Christian or not?

Do you decide if I am a Christian?  Is that your role?

What is a Christian?

I have read and heard so many lies about my church that it is appauling that these people can say they follow the Savior.

The Savior I know encourages unity.

Jesus prayed, as quoted in John 17:
20 Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word;
21 That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.
22 And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one:
23 I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as thou hast loved me.

Mormons=Christians?

The Book of Mormon, Alma 34:
8 And now, behold, I will testify unto you of myself that these things are true. Behold, I say unto you, that I do know that Christ shall come among the children of men, to take upon him the transgressions of his people, and that he shall atone for the sins of the world; for the Lord God hath spoken it.
9 For it is expedient that an atonement should be made; for according to the great plan of the Eternal God there must be an atonement made, or else all mankind must unavoidably perish; yea, all are hardened; yea, all are fallen and are lost, and must perish except it be through the atonement which it is expedient should be made.
10 For it is expedient that there should be a great and last sacrifice; yea, not a sacrifice of man, neither of beast, neither of any manner of fowl; for it shall not be a human sacrifice; but it must be an infinite and eternal sacrifice.
11 Now there is not any man that can sacrifice his own blood which will atone for the sins of another. Now, if a man murdereth, behold will our law, which is just, take the life of his brother? I say unto you, Nay.
12 But the law requireth the life of him who hath murdered; therefore there can be nothing which is short of an infinite atonement which will suffice for the sins of the world.
13 Therefore, it is expedient that there should be a great and last sacrifice, and then shall there be, or it is expedient there should be, a stop to the shedding of blood; then shall the law of Moses be fulfilled; yea, it shall be all fulfilled, every jot and tittle, and none shall have passed away.
14 And behold, this is the whole meaning of the law, every whit pointing to that great and last sacrifice; and that great and last sacrifice will be the Son of God, yea, infinite and eternal.
15 And thus he shall bring salvation to all those who shall believe on his name; this being the intent of this last sacrifice, to bring about the bowels of mercy, which overpowereth justice, and bringeth about means unto men that they may have faith unto repentance.
16 And thus mercy can satisfy the demands of justice, and encircles them in the arms of safety, while he that exercises no faith unto repentance is exposed to the whole law of the demands of justice; therefore only unto him that has faith unto repentance is brought about the great and eternal plan of redemption.

37 And now, my beloved brethren, I desire that ye should remember these things, and that ye should work out your salvation with fear before God, and that ye should no more deny the coming of Christ,;
38 That ye contend no more against the Holy Ghost, but that ye receive it, and take upon you the name of Christ; that ye humble yourselves even to the dust, and worship God, in whatsoever place ye may be in, in spirit and in truth; and that ye live in thanksgiving daily, for the many mercies and blessings which he doth bestow upon you.
If by "Right Moment" he means "Huckabee is slapping me around in Iowa", then I guess yeah, it's the "right moment" :)
Whatever Gov. Romney says regarding his religion this week it won't much matter. What DOES matter and WILL continue to matter in this race are the things that he has ALREADY said. His many flip-flopping statements over the last several years are doing him more harm than his Mormon religion could ever do. THIS is why so many republicans like myself can't trust him with our votes.
I don’t know whether it’s self deception or fear or just plain bullheadedness, but I would sadly guess that most people who hold his religion against him have already DECIDED what they THINK he believes, and even though they are wrong, they will hold onto their misconceptions no matter what Mitt says in this address. It only takes a moment scanning google or youtube to find thousands of outright lies about Mitt’s faith… lies told by supposedly Christian people to boot.

There’s a popular opinion out there that people who change their minds on something, even after having gained new information, are somehow weak willed and incapable, and thus discovering or admitting that Mormons aren’t nearly as bad as they’d been preaching would make them bad people somehow.

As a Mormon, I would not vote for Mitt BECAUSE of his religion, but because of who he is and what’s he done for America in business, in the olympics, as governor… even as a husband and father who’s set an example of a strong family. Consider his accomplishments compared to the other candidates. Consider the messes he’s cleaned up. And consider the mess we’re in. Consider with your mind and your heart; drop the anti-mormon filters you’re running the facts through. If you still disagree with him, so be it! Just don’t let your prejudices get in the way.
I find it ironic that people are so concerned with Romney's beliefs.  If anyone cares to read what is written in the Bible...parting of the Red Sea, walking on water, a talking donkey, and a man swallowed by a whale...some pretty unusual events that test convential thinking.

I think Gov. Romney is very smart, received his B.A., with Highest Honors, from Brigham Young University in 1971. In 1975, he was awarded an MBA from Harvard Business School, where he was named a Baker Scholar, and a J.D., cum laude, from Harvard Law School.  He's had an extrordinary career in both business and government.  He is the only candidate that could even begin to turn around our economy and get rid of our trade deficit.

Gov. Romney is far and away the best candidate.
I am still awaiting CBS, NBC, and ABC to have  Harry Reid on their program to discuss why he should not resign because he is a Mormon. A 4 year poll conducted and released by Gallup Friday shows 62% of Democrats, report themselves are mentally Ill. Great news for our country. 42% of republicans reported mental problems. Los Angles times makes statement that CNN is Corrupt and Incompentent lol... Sleep well America
GO ROMNEY!!!!!!!!
Mitt is going to have to stretch a bit on the 'Grand Tradition of Religious Tolerance' thing. The massacre of the Mormons in Nauvoo, Illinois, by an alternative form of Christians, was not in the 'Grand Tradition of Religious Tolerance' ballpark, and not America's Finest Hour.
Does this mean Obama will give the “black speech?”
Does this mean Hillary will give the “woman speech?”
Does this mean Richardson will give the “Latino speech?”
Does this mean Huckabee will give the “I wear Jesus on my sleeve speech?”

It is unbelievable Mormons have to tolerate so much bigotry!
wow, that's awesome. He really is a good guy, I wish him the best of luck with this.
Similar to the JFK speech, this will break down the walls of religious intolerance.  This will force everyone who has a religious litmus test to evaluate their deep-held convictions and see if they come up short of what our Founders intended.
It's sad that there is even a need for him to have to give this speech.  Kennedy shouldn't have had to do it either.  Of all the places in the world where religious tolerance should prevail, America should be easily #1.  This country was founded on principles of religious tolerance.  Mormons themselves, if you know any, pride themselves on their religious tolerance and political neutrality as a church.

Romney is a business genious and a turn-around artist.  He's socially conservative, fiscally conservative, and culturally conservative.  The guy will be one of the best Presidents ever if only people would have some religious tolerance.

Mormons have been successful at every other level of government... why should President be any different???
It is sad to me that a man as obviously qualified a Mitt Romney would have to defend his faith. He is obviously a good man and a good choice for the office of president, but people can not get past the fact that he is Mormon. Are will still that uneducated in our society?
I find it ironic that there are still some who gang up with religious bigotry against others.  I have been listening to all of the candidates, without any intent but to determine who is the best for the job. I say Romney is definitely the one to support.  He is the one we need to vote for.  Don't be apathetic in how you view this process! Take a stand for America.
Mitt Romney is a class act.  He is a person with great character and values.  It is a shame that people cannot see past his religion.  We are not electing the leader of our church.  Romney is exactly what our country needs at this time.  He is right on immigration, he is right on our taxes and the economy.  Wake up America!  A person with Romney's character and experience in the real world does not come around that often.  Judge him on his vision for America and nothing else.
If you're wondering why Romney has to face a religious test when it's so unfair, that's the face of the modern GOP.  The Evangelical right sees everything in terms of Fundamentalist Christianity.  Catholics are suspect at least or worse.  Even main-stream Protestant churches are not considered not "Christian" in the eyes of many fundamentalists.
Guess I'm a little late getting in on this issue regarding religion/faith and Romney. I am a liberal Southern Baptist who believes everyone is entitled to his/her own personal beliefs. The discussions about the candidates' religion should not take place, mainly because:  GW Bush was elected by the moral majority based on his "faith"; and JUST LOOK WHAT WE GOT! Sorry folks, but we definitely don't need an ordained Southern Baptist minister (Huckabee) as president--that might be worse than Bush (oh my!).

I do not hold it against Mr. Romney that he is Morman, but I won't vote for him. I heard him saying that everytime he sees John Edwards on TV talking about "two Americas" he wants to throw something at the TV. Romney says we (US)are united, one in America. Either the man is naiive, ignorant or lying when he says this country is united. We are extremely divisive on all major issues from the Iraqi war to the economy, health care and Social Security.

When John Edwards speaks of "two Americas", he is talking about the fact that the rich are getting richer while the poor and middle class are getting poorer. Anyone who doesn't see this as fact has to be blind, ignorant or just plain dumb.

Just look at why the economy is so messed up. The FED lowered the interest rate to entice people into buying homes. This in turn benefitted the huge banks, and wealthy developers who also build wealthy "gated" communities which keep out the "undesirables" (working class). The developers have gotten their money, the govn't will probably bail out corporate lenders and lower the interest rate again to entire more borrowers. Seems like our govn't exists only for the wealthy.
Some christians are the most bigoted individuals you will ever meet. They think mormons are not christian, they believe jews and all those that dont believe in Christ will burn in Hell. They also believe a baby that is not baptised if he dies will burn in hell or go to limbo.
With those thoughts I would not like to vote for any christians.!
