The battle for Iowa

Today’s Washington Post headline says it all: "Losing Ground in Iowa, Clinton Assails Obama." From the story: "Clinton has hammered Obama recently over his health-care proposal, arguing that he is misleading voters because it omits millions of people and would not lower costs. But Sunday, in a dramatic shift, she made it clear that her goal is to challenge Obama not just on policy but also on one of his strongest selling points: his reputation for honesty. ‘There's a big difference between our courage and our convictions, what we believe and what we're willing to fight for,’ Clinton told reporters here. She said voters in Iowa will have a choice ‘between someone who talks the talk, and somebody who's walked the walk.’”

More Clinton: “‘I have said for months that I would much rather be attacking Republicans, and attacking the problems of our country, because ultimately that's what I want to do as president. But I have been, for months, on the receiving end of rather consistent attacks. Well, now the fun part starts. We're into the last month, and we're going to start drawing the contrasts.’”

That drew a swift rebuke from Obama. “‘This presidential campaign isn't about attacking people for fun, it's about solving people's problems, like ending this war and creating a universal health care system,’ he said in a statement. ‘Washington insiders might think throwing mud is fun, but the American people are looking for leadership that can unite this country around a common purpose.’”

Here's how the Des Moines Register plays the Clinton promise that she'll get tougher on her primary foes: "Clinton says she'll increase criticism of Democratic rivals."

Per NBC/NJ's Aswini Anburajan, Obama yesterday also brushed off the Clinton campaign’s attacks on his leadership PAC. Obama said those attacks were the product of political frustration since "fortunes have changed." Nothing could underscore that point more than the argument made by Clinton that Obama has also been planning a White House run ever since he entered office. While there's no doubt that with an entrance as grand as he had, his eyes may have been looking past the Senate chamber to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, Obama has been making jokes about Clinton having "long-held ambitions" for political office for more than a month now.

He first introduced the line in a speech in Spartanburg, SC on November 3. "I am not running for this office to fulfill any long-held plans or because I believe it is somehow owed to me. I never expected to be here, and I always knew the journey would be improbable," he said. Lately, he has been tossing the line in far more frequently. When he used it at the Apollo in Harlem last week, he got a lot of laughs.

More Clinton vs. Obama… The Washington Post looks at the indecision by some black leaders in choosing between Clinton and Obama.  "For black leaders ... the Clinton-Obama rivalry represents a moment of choice for the black political establishment that grew from the civil rights movement. With the African American vote potentially critical once the primary campaign extends beyond overwhelmingly white Iowa and New Hampshire, the divided loyalties are making for a complex landscape in heavily black states such as South Carolina, which will hold its primary Jan. 26, and Georgia and Alabama, which will vote Feb. 5."

The Los Angeles Times looks at the three-way rhetorical battle over health care. "Healthcare has spurred some of the fiercest exchanges among Democrats on the campaign trail, with the Clinton campaign demanding that Obama renounce ‘misleading’ claims and Edwards charging that neither of his chief rivals goes far enough in their reform plans.”

“Though the specifics of the healthcare proposals are complex, there are compelling reasons why Clinton has chosen to fight on this ground -- and why Obama and Edwards are fully engaged. The new focus was seized by Clinton's campaign, which has struggled in recent weeks to respond to attacks from Obama and Edwards that she lacks conviction on key issues... In this week's tussle, Clinton used healthcare as a way to turn the tables on her chief rival. Now she is presenting herself as the candidate with core convictions and bold ideas, and portraying Obama as an opponent of true reform who is being disingenuous with voters."

And is the Clinton vs. Obama split causing headaches in the Jackson family? The Chicago Sun-Times' Lynn Sweet reports that Rep. Jackson (who has endorsed Obama) and his mother (who has endorsed Clinton) will be hitting the campaign trail for their respective candidates in the early presidential voting states.

I'm still listening to the candidates, researching in hopes of being patient and making the right decision as an independent.
yep.  She is hitting him for 'long held ambitions' because he said in kindergarten he wanted to be president when he grew up.
and she said it with a straight face.
Hillary is going down a very bad path.  Attacking him on his character is something people are not fond of.  this is not the 90s and after 20 years of this personal attack garbage while the country sinks, people are sick of it.
Policy is one thing.  Personal attacks is another.  And personal attacks does not play well now.
Besides, to attack Obama's character is not something Hillary should be doing.  After all, she is the face of dirty politics and ethical problems.
I can't believe Clinton is having such a meltdown, I never would have forseen it.  But I suppose it's better it happen now than next year against a GOP candidate, for the sake of the country.
Politicians!

I support Edwards, he has driven the issues in this campaign, as opposed to just playing games. He is the real leader, the one who will bring change. He is sharp, tenacious, and worthy of the office.
What's even more interesting is the reaction to the Des Moines Register article.  Of the 33 comments posted, 30 have a very negative reaction to Senator Clinton's negative attacks, only 3 support her.
It was Obama and Edwards started off with negative campaign calling names like bush-cheney lite and other things on HRC and when HRC attacks them on policies it is called negative campaign. Get over it Obama. If this guy is dems nominee, I will tell you sure, we will have another term of rethugs in the white house.
you all seem so sure so early in the campaign process. i'm just don't know yet. i'm just going to keep mt eyes and years open for a while longer.
Folks,

Start your engine and fasten your seat belt. Clinton's dynasty is finally over and every attempt to coronate her is fruitless at this point.

Finally, American people will get to decide who should be our next president. What a sigh of relief to see people pick change over corrupt experience rooted in "K" street.
I can't believe Clinton doesn't understand the difference:  Obama attacks her policies and she calls it mud slinging and abondoning the politics of hope, then she turns around and accuses him of lying and cheating.  There's a difference between attacking policy and attacking a candidate.
Hillary INC is trying to drag Obama through the mud in hopes of Edwards winning Iowa. Look at the '04 Iowa caucus catfight between Dean and Gephardt. An Edwards victory in Iowa is far less damaging to Hillary INC than and Obama victory. I think it is "fun" watching Hillary INC lose this as she was crowned too early by the pundits.
I would like to say that Senator Obama has lost my vote.  I use to think we was the candidate for change and hope.  With his recent holier than thou attitude and pointing out the attacks Hillary is making when he has been assiling her character all along is disheartening.  He is not the different politician he is pretending to be. This caucus goer is headed back to the undecided column.
“I have said for months that I would much rather be attacking Republicans...."

Is that honestly the type of person anyone wants as President!?  Screw managing the country, she'd rather spend her time in office attacking half the politicians, and ignoring half the entire national population.  The worst possible person to be in office is the one who will automatically shoot down anything certain people say simply because of their political party.  I cannot think of a single worse way to run the country, and her foot in mouth comments she's been spewing for the past decade should be more than enough to ever keep her from reaching the level of power she desires.  It's bad enough that she wants a dictatorship, but being a dictator who robs people blind while pretending to do it for the greater good, this nation simply can't afford her.
If Obama's supposed "holier than thou" attitude is causing you to change your vote from him to undecided, it's highy doubtful that you were ever going to vote for him in the first place!!! The Clintonites are out in full force today!!!

"you all seem so sure so early in the campaign process..."

I'm beginning to think there is something wrong with me--I'm not sure about any of the candidates so I am glad to see someone else feels the same.  I don't understand how so many who post here have become so strongly dedicated to a given candidate.  What are they seeing that I don't see?
The Clinton expolsion was inevitable.... her problem is Obama is a truth telling candidate. She on the other hand is a manipulative candidate. 15 years ago americans would have bought her retoric but now we see it for what it is..... true garbage. Sillary...Its hard to destory the truth. as she keeps attempting to cloud the truth she just looks silly. but i must admit wacthing the clinton melt down is interesting

Obama 08
How cool, the closer we get to the wire, the more desperate the players get. This is a good test of how a person responds to pressure. I am just suprised to see how some candidates still have the moxi to continue given the weird stories that surface. Oh well some people love the weird. Bottomline is take some time and look at all the candidates, send in a few bucks and watch the system pull off another rip-off.
If I felt that there was any possible way I could in good conscious vote Democrat, Obama would have earned my vote.  Hillary's dictatorship ideals and better than you attitude is just too much to stomach, and the other candidates don't have enough in tune with the people.  That's only if I was voting Democrat, Obama still doesn't represent the middle class, and his health care ideas and tax proposals that rob from them prove it.  Looks like Republican it must be for me this term, but at least if Obama was to win we'd know that he wouldn't automatically shoot down anything said by a Republican simply because of the person's political party.
Final graf of WaPo article: Clinton advisers said they make no apology for going on the offensive after months of criticism by both Obama and Edwards. "Senator Obama is a fabulous orator, but we need more than words," Wolfson said in an interview. "We don't need someone who says one thing and does another, somebody who talks a good game but doesn't have the courage of their convictions. And on issue after issue, Senator Obama says one thing and does another."

That's just outrageous. But, I suppose, when you resort to attacking a candidate's kindergarten record, the next step down is making bald-faced lies. We are now entering the abyss that is the Clinton negative campaigning machine. Obama has to be able to address it to win -- and if he does, he will be quite deserving of the nomination and I won't be concerned about his ability to defeat the Republican. At times like this, the Clinton people make Rove look like a sandbox playing kindergartner himself.
With the polls turning on Hillary, it is no surprise she would go into the mud, she would do anything to save her campaign.  The little hostage situation seemed to do nothing for her numbers and as the little stories about what is happening in the Clinton campaign come out, it shows she is nothing more then a fake Senator who is riding her husband's coat tails to tell the world she is somebody.
Mark in Iowa:

Your comment about Barack Obama losing your vote is really funny.  In case you didn't notice, the same people read and post here almost daily.  You've been pro Hillary for as long as I've seen you post here.

Nice try.  The truth of the matter is, you are not going to change anyones mind on this blog.  Those who post here are already decided.  Don't insult the intelligence of the people who come here with your false claims.

Marks efforts are as desperate as Hillary's.  She's finished.

Dot,

Most of the people who get onto this site and other like this do it because they have chosen a candidate and they want to push their opinion (most of the time illogically), rather than to get information. Bloggers like yourself are, unfortunately, more rare. It's kind of like those CNN online surveys. The only ones who respond to them are the ones who have so strong an opinion to log on and vote.
I would like to say that Senator Obama has lost my vote.  I use to think we was the candidate for change and hope.  With his recent holier than thou attitude and pointing out the attacks Hillary is making when he has been assiling her character all along is disheartening.  He is not the different politician he is pretending to be. Perhaps, you should come out of Clintonite shadow and make your vote count in this election. Stop the talking point and focus on the issue.
Another week, another Hillary Attack!!Shadow, I agree with you, it's better to see this Now as to next year against the GOP.Barack is sending a POSITIVE message out to the masses & the masses are Responding in kind
obama is an orator. thats all he is. when confronted on issues, face to face, he gets confused. if elected, he needs adviser constantly on what to think and what to decide. oprahs shows are great but will have no effect on peoples conviction. money can not buy decent peoples opinion.

Newsflash: Advisors to the President are pretty important. If Clinton is elected, do you really think she won't use advisors to help her make decisions.

We haven't had a president not use his advisors since...well, George W. Bush.

Funny you say that, because money can buy Hillary Clinton's opinion... her opinion is a weather-vane.  Wind blows left, she points left.  Wind blows right, she points right.

Two weeks ago she repeatedly declared she WOULDN'T attack fellow democrats.  Now, all of a sudden, she declares that attacking fellow democrats is "the fun part" of an election.
Dot, I appreciate your dilemma. I richotched between Clinton and Obama for several months, until I saw the debate, I forget which one, where Clinton stumbled and Obama was very weak. Edwards is consistently strong, moral and sharp, in my eyes. I suddenly got very afraid of what the Republicans would do against Clinton and Obama, and I decided Edwards is my man. I have also observed how Edwards has shaped the issues in this campaign. Really, he has generated a tsunami of ideas and policy initiatives, and that says to me he will be an active leader. Edwards doesn't get the media attention the others do, but I have seen all the forums and debates, and videos of campaign appearances and I have decided he's the One.

Newsflash:  Hillary is not the president....
She's some wannabe Senator from New York who got elected just becuase her last name was Clinton....
MSNBC - where is information on An extensive poll in the three states by The Associated Press and the nonpartisan Pew Research Center???

I know MSNBC endorsed obama - and will only show polls where he leads but lets be fair...

http://apnews.myway.com/article/20071203/D8TA1M4O0.html
I think the Edwards led attack a few weeks back on Clinton (to which Obama lent a hand) was fairly personal. The idea was that she is sneaky and manipulative. But when you see her in interview it is clear that she sees herself as "got at". A victim mentality. She has psychological baggage. Edwards and particularly Obama are probably too polite to point that out.

Now she is going after Obama. Her problem is that she has nothing on him. He's brilliant and a man of good character. Because of this he will get the nomination and people will overlook his relative youth, as they are too sensible to expect perfection.
Actually people if you want the latest political news and polls (an hour ago) go to yahoo news and associated press. First read, once again a day late and a dollar short.
So many quotes and situational harangues are taken out of context here; politicians spend more time trying to word perfect sentences (tone of voice and non-verbal expressions included) and also trying to make political points so the educated and uneducated can both understand, that everyone loses sight of actually what’s going on.  After speeches, we try and interpret too much of this stuff also.  Attack this; attack that - how about debating the BIPARTISAN issues that are killing this country!

Maybe you didn't understand the phrase "If Clinton is elected" that was included in my post. I can't really find any way to put it that would be easier to understand. I'm sorry that your grammatical skills aren't on par with the most basic use of the language. In the future, I will try to make it as easy as possible.
cms,
So Obama's Kindergarten and 3rd grade teachers are lying about his writing when he was 6 and 8 years old when he lived in southeast Asia, that he wanted to be president?  Do you honest think his teachers are lying?

Also, if little Barak was in southeast Asia when he was 5 or 6 and during the time he's writing he wants to be president...what country did he want to be president of?  At that age, was he planning to come to the USA? That's quite unusual for a 5-6 year old to be talking about becoming president of the USA
especially when he lives overseas in southeast Asia.

To Jason

I believe you got your "facts" switched.

Hillary attacks Obama's policies like "universal health care when he leaves 15 million people out.

Obama has abandoned the politics of Hope for weeks now.  Obama and his campaign attack Hillary personally.  He's called her not trustworthy less than truthful when it was Obama who was twisting the truth. I take it very personal when someone suggest or just out and out says I'm a liar, don't you, Jason?
Go at it guys!  The solution is two words:  JOE BIDEN
That's right, Citizn J.  If someone tells the truth about Obama's policies or distorting of the facts, don't defend what he said...you can't.

Obama says one thing and does another

Obama talks a good game, gives big hoopla speeches that are scripted.  Does not do well when questioned personally as in debates...off script.

President Obama will do very well in State of the Union speeches.

How's he going to do in press conferences?

Probably okay because Bush has gotten away with it for 7 years.

to mark, have you researched any of the accusations concerning obama or you making your decisions based upon allegations that haven't been proven? they are rumors until proven. this type of character assasination has been common place in politics for sometime no,espicially if an adversarial campaign is being threatened by anothers success. if it was clinton, edwards, dodd, biden, huckabee, romney or paul would you check the facts or just believe what is thrown out by another campaign? i have not chosen who i am supporting as of yet, but i am not just going to believe something because it is printed or said by another campaign. oh yeah, one would say that it came out in the newspapers or print media first. i suggest to us all to check the the sources.
WAIT! Is Hillary kidding? Since she can't find any  worthwhile mud to sling from any of the years of Obama's political career, she's going to rely on the findings of a KINDERGARTEN PAPER? I distinctly remember well over a month ago Hillidiots were deflecting attacks on her 'calculating campaigning' and praising it as 'strong ambition'. Obama said he wanted to be president in kindergarten? Guess what? SO DID PRACTICALLY 3 OUT OF EVERY TEN KINDERGARTENS! But the Hillary supporters are right, she is not 'negative campaigning'...she's 'STUPID CAMPAIGNING!'
Jerry, Jerry, Jerry, so you say that Hillary is some wannabee senator from NY who got elected just because her last name was Clinton.

If that's true then we can conclude that Obama is some wannabee first term senator from Ill who got elected because he and his camnpaign slung "sexual" mud at his opponent.

Right?
Barack Obama lacks substantive enough track record in national and international issues at this point in his life to handle the presidency.

Vote for Hillary Clinton, Joe Biden, Chris Dodd
Beckwolf:
If you think that the Republicans are the party of the middle class, then you haven't been paying attention to the history of this country for the last 160 years.  One could safely say that the Republicans represent the power elite of this country and it is for that small group, whom they toil.

I would never claim that the Democrats are perfect but working within the Democratic party to get the interests of the middle class heard, is a much more realistic proposition than achieving that goal through the Republicans.  The Republicans wrap themselves in the cloth of the evangelicals to give themselves some credibility.  They pay lip service to God.  But when it comes down to it, they are the Sadducees of the 'American Empire'.  They protect the rich and make war and if you really want to change that misguided path for this great country than you should work with the Democratic Party (I'm surprised that Ron Paul doesn't recognize that).

The reason I can never support Hillary Clinton is that in my mind's eye I see her as cut from the same cloth as the Republicans.  It's ironic to me that Republicans find her too liberal, when most Democrats who don't support her, see her as a closet Republican (she should pick Joe Lieberman as her running mate, should we be so unfortunate as to have her as the Democratic nominee).  Obama is the true candidate of change in this country and it seems as if people are waking up to this.

Michael, from LA:

Stop posting the same item in all stories about Obama. If you look at the last page you posted that poll on, you'll see people point it out as grossly outdated!

Here's a quote from your post:

"The telephone survey involved interviews conducted from Nov. 7-25..."

November 7th is a LONG TIME AGO!!!!!!
What an irresponsible poll, combining results from over three weeks.

So Michael, every time you post that poll, people will be right behind you to point out that it's grossly outdated and irresponsible.

Obama '08!

To all Obama supporters ( those same people 24/7 here) You guys are mad because more and more Obama's cheats exposed, just like the way he was exposed by Tim in his MTP interview. People need to know the truth. I totally agree with Hillary campaign attack back and let people know how Obama has been misrepresenting her for this long. She doesn't want to attack back, but enough is enough. SHE DOESN'T ATTACK HIM NOT BECAUSE SHE IS WEAK. SHE ATTACKS HIM BACK BECAUSE HE ASKED FOR IT ! REPUBLICANS KNOW IT. DEMONCRATS KNOW IT.
There is a saying that he or she who is without sin cast the first stone. By now the Republican attack propagandists are concentrating their plan on Clinton, not Obama, expecting that she would be the inevitable Democratic presidential candidate. What does that tell you?

What the hell are you talking about? First of all, I didn't address anyone that was "tell[ing] the truth about Obama's policies or distorting of the facts". Second, where did I attack Hillary?

I don't know if you have me confused with someone else, or if you truly are going insane.
Kindergartners in the USA may say they want to be president of the USA. However,in my 30 years of teaching, I may have heard only one child say he wanted to be president and one a governor.  At that age, especially back in the 1960's, boys wanted to be firemen, policemen, etc.

A former student of mine is in state politics.  Not once did he ever mention being president, senator or governor.  After I saw the potential in him and mentioned that one day I wouldn't be surprised to see him as governor, THEN and only THEN did he begin to say that he might want to be governor someday.

The unusual thing is that Barak Obama was saying he wanted to be president ( of the USA?????) when he was 5-8 years old and in Kindergarten to 3rd grade when he was living in southeast Asia.

I've never, never heard a Kindergartener or 3rd grader for that matter say he wanted to be president or anything else in another country when he grew up.

It is VERY stange.  I'm not saying his teachers are not telling the truth, I'm just saying it was strange back in 1966-69 that Obama who apparently had lived in Indonesia since he was 5 years old to be talking about being president of the USA.  Did his teacher or an adult encourage him to be president of the USA?

That tells me that you are easily influenced. That's about it.
Jerry of Corpus, I am talking with you aren't I?

A typical obama personal attack..."I  don't know if you have me confused with someone else, or if you truly ar going insane"

I did not personally call you names.  I commented on what you said.

Obama and his followers live on personal attacks,
not on attacking the issues.

  I rest my case, Jerry.
