IA Rep officially endorses Edwards

Posted: Monday, December 03, 2007 3:43 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ’s Tricia Miller
WATERLOO, IOWA -- Edwards accepted the endorsement of freshman Rep. Bruce Braley this morning at Hawkeye Community College. Braley, who represents Waterloo and the Iowa half of the Quad Cities, is the first member of Iowa’s congressional delegation to endorse a presidential candidate.

“John Edwards and I have nothing in common,” Braley began, tongue-in-cheek. “He grew up in the small town of Robbins, N.C., population 1,200. I grew up in Brooklyn, Iowa, population 1,400. His father, as you all know, worked in a mill. My father worked in a grain elevator. His mother worked in a post office. My mother was a schoolteacher. John Edwards worked to put himself through college at North Carolina State, and I worked multiple jobs to put myself through college at Iowa State. John Edwards went to law school at the University of North Carolina.

“I went to law school at the University of Iowa. He’s practiced law for 20 years in North Carolina, fighting for justice for his clients, many times against powerful special interests. I spent 24 years of my life practicing law right here in Waterloo, fighting for justice for the people I represented, oftentimes against powerful special interests. So as you can see, we have nothing in common.”

Braley, a former president of the Iowa Trial Lawyers Association, won a close race in both his primary and general election to replace Jim Nussle last fall. He said he started following Edwards’ career long before he ran for the Senate and also supported his presidential bid in 2004.

"I can only guarantee [Edwards] one thing,” Braley told reporters after his remarks, “and that is there will be one very passionate, energetic volunteer in Ward 5, Precinct 5 in Waterloo one month from tonight.”

Good for Biden
I mean good for Edward
About time Edwards gets some good news. Is the Hillary-Obama feud finally turning folks off to those two?

http://www.political-buzz.com/
now that hillary's novelty status has been overshadowed by the fact she is dishonest and a bush-lite at heart maybe people will concentrate on nominating edwards, the only candidate that is not afraid to tell you what his plans are, and better yet his plans are what this country needs
I wonder why this is "controversial"? Who is/was stopping the other candidates from doing the same thing? This is a completely legal practice that the campaign is doing OPENLY, not in secret.  All this whining and moaning about a few college students who will not get to vote at home if they don't vote at school seems a little overwrought to me.
Oops, I posted my previous comment on the wrong thread! lol

Senator Edwards has run a good campaign . . . no one should count him out just yet.
John Edwards is the right person for the people. It just strikes me odd that when the polls in Iowa show a canidate leading or in a statistical tie with Hillary in the morning that by afternoon additional polls come out with the Headline that Hillary is leading in NH and SC. Does the media really think the american public is stupid. I don't know about you but the Clinton spin machine is working overtime.
Given that Edwards is only at 19% in the latest Iowa poll released this morning ( http://www.campaigndiaries.com/2007/12/and-plot-thickens-new-early-state-polls.html ), he REALLY needs some good news.
John EDwards is the best candidatae. Don;t count him out.  He speaks openly and trutfully without all the baggage that Hillary brings with her.  Who wants all that same baggage again for President.  Haven't we had enough of Bill and Hillary act?
Go Johnny !! Go !!
Edwards will make a fine nominee !!

At the Brown and Balck forun, he had such a gracious question, asking Obama to join forces with him on a progressive agenda.

He made Hillary swallow her worm tongue
She had to copy Edwards' question
She's been copy Edwards all campaign

Edwards/Obama '08
WooHoo!  Go Edwards - a president for The People!!
Yay!
The main stream media would really like to discount Edwards-consider this:  Edwards got the non binding endorsement of the Iowa caucus goers-10,000 strong, and in a race this close, can easily be the definitive criteria for him to win..additionally, he is the majority second choice for those who have picked a candidate, and the way Iowa caucuses work, this becomes very important
But to me, the primary question is:  who is the most electable of the Democrats in the general election?  Hillary is too divisive for the general populace=my first choice is Biden, who has the experience and would win over (opinion only) more Republicans and moderate, conservative Independents. I don't think he can get high enough numbers to pull it off, so I think Edwards is the most electable..
An Edwards/Biden ticket would be AWESOME!!
Wouldn't it be great to have a President who has actually worked for minimum wage in the White House again?  I sure am ready for it, John Edwards is the only candidate who pulled himself up and worked his way to financial good fortune - and I was raised that is the American Dream, so lets get to work on that Dream Ticket - with Edwards at the top.
I'm pretty sick and tired of already rich folks controlling everything, they are selfish and greedy.

Most federally elected officials in Iowa (and democratic Governors) refrain from endorsing in the caucus. Often their spouse will endorse, but not the elected official. Harkin was supporting Dean behind the scenes in 2003, and would have preferred to remain behind the scenes, but after the capture of Saddam, and "good news in Iraq", and shrinking internal campaign polling, Sen. Harkin officially endorsed Dean, when Dean received 18% of the vote it was politically embarrassing for Harkin.

Congressman Braley is a close friend of Edwards. He was very active in his 04 campaign. Those who know Bruce knew he was supporting Edwards, and assumed at some point he'd officially endorse him.

It will never happen Biden won't be anyone's VP. Also the sensible priorities endorsement was a flop. The pledges were to support a candidate committed to reducing the defense budget. Biden was the only candidate (other than Kucinich) with a track record of voting to reduce Defense waste. Edwards had a very pro defense pork voting record. Sensible Priorities endorsed based upon perceived Iowa caucus viability (based upon statistically invalid polling), and not what candidate had the track record that was consistent with their goals, or even based on who had committed to their goals on the campaign.
Edwards is the candidate who can be elected President.  Richardson is my choice for VP.  Both Clinton and Obama are on the outside of the mainstream voter, their nomination will give the opostition a much greater chance of retaining power.  John Edwards, President.
