Huckabee does Imus

Posted: Tuesday, December 04, 2007 10:58 AM by Mark Murray

From NBC's Lauren Appelbaum
Huckabee -- the fourth presidential candidate to go on Don Imus' show since it returned yesterday (following McCain, Dodd, and Richardson) -- faced difficult questions today on Romney's Mormonism, who can go to heaven, and abortion.

Although Imus may have been attempting to spark controversy by asking Huckabee if Mormons are true Christians and if Jewish people can go to heaven, the former governor didn't take the bait. Responding to the Mormon question, Huckabee disregarded any friction between Mormons and conservative Christians, saying there's friction between people in the same pew. "It's really not so much related to your denomination or label; it's related to your relationship with the person of Christ," Huckabee said. "I know some Baptists. I'm not sure I'd call them Christians, because they don't behave like it. People make too much of the labels we wear and not enough about the character we have."

When asked if Jewish people can got to heaven, Huckabee responded with one of his trademarked quips. "I think anybody can go to heaven. I think you could even go to heaven and that's a pretty thick stretch. I'm not saying you will; I'm just saying I think you could."

Imus pushed Huckabee for more, asking him if someone must believe in Jesus Christ to go to heaven. "You're getting way into an area that I don't know has anything to do with running for president," Huckabee responded, implying his religious beliefs would not impact the American people. "For me to start telling everybody else what their beliefs are and the validity of them, certainly is not my role, not only individually but absolutely has no business in my being president."

However, Huckabee's religious beliefs may influence his opinion on issues like abortion. Huckabee said what he would like is "an affirmation of human life" and called for a national constitutional law. "I hear some people say, 'Well every state has their own views on that.' Well, that's like every state can have view their on slavery. That's the logic of the Civil War. This is a moral issue. It is either right or it's wrong. If it's wrong for us to put some beings with a greater value than others, than this is an issue that cannot be determined geographically."

Although Huckabee faced tough questions, Imus offered him a near-endorsement. "I'm just about to climb on that Huckabee bandwagon," Imus told the former governor during the interview.

"Well, you should be, because you were dissing me some kind of way earlier when I first announced I was going to run," Huckabee replied. "And I remember, it wasn't exactly like you met it with a standing ovation, so only Bernie [one of Imus' co-hosts] had the insight and the prophetic vision to see what was going to happen."

"I'll tell you what, if we go all the way, we'll have your show from the East Room of the White House," Huckabee joked. "That would wreck any re-election chances I'd ever have."

A bunch of new general election polls were released this morning showing Clinton competitive in Colorado... and not so much in Arizona. But the most important poll could be SUSA's survey of California's electoral vote initiative. The results suggest the initiative could pass, though Democrats should not get panicked yet.
Full roundup of all these polls: http://www.campaigndiaries.com/2007/12/morning-polls-and-lots-of-them-colorado.html
why do they attempt to legitimize a nobody like Imus?

The Rutgers women's basketball team defeated Maryland last night (on ESPN2), a fine way to "celebrate" their detractor's return to the airwaves.  Go Scarlet Knights!
i personally can't believe these people are going on imus! this man uttered racist statements and got sentenced to 8 months of oblivion and is back on the radio! i've been married 32 years and i can assure you my wife wouldn't let me off the hook if i had offended her in any that badly! hell i'm still hearing about stuff from year 1 i screwed up! IN THE EARLY 70'S 2 blacks used the "n" word on my workroom floor when it started being popular with blacks. as a manager for the us postal service i immediately stopped everyone from working and in a unit meeting informed them that word was not to be uttered on my floor as it was against postal policy. that no race had the right to selectively use it and since my job discription didn't include linguistic referee for determining in which context it was acceptable use of the word would result in immediate disciplinary action! the fact that imus, the rappers and anyone else [including candidates] can't see the seriousness of the offense and let him back on the airwaves disturbes me.
I just love this Huckabee guy!I think I'm gettimg on that bandwagon too.
Governor Huckabee is an ordained minister, granted, but is that any reason for so many of his questions to be about religious matters? If a professional chef ran for President, would we spend our time asking him about souffles?  If elected, Governor Huckabee will face the same issues as the other candidates--let me hear more about his approaches to questions about Iraq, health care, education, etc.
Huckabee Does Imus - at first glance, I thought it was another Republican sex scandal.
You cant fool or buy people, Mike Huckabee is for real.  With no money and just a little publicity he is the man.  Im 70 years old, have been a dem, a repub, and independent now. This is the best candidate we have had in my lifetime, he s so perfect he s scarcy and he doesnt tell one audience one thing, and another one thing.  I think this election is over, Mike has won it.
OH the affable RACIST that makes everything OKIE DOKIE.What a forgiving world we live in,if your rich and white, you can even determine who might get into heaven.SURPRISE YOU CAN HIDE HERE ON EARTH BUT THE TRUTH SHALL BE REVEALED WHEREEVER YOU GO AND ITS NOT WHAT YOUr thinking<AS chris mattews says so eloquently HHHEEEEH
Dodd and Richardson were stupid to go on Imus before the Iowa caucus, didn't anyone tell them that if you asked University of Iowa alum, and U of I fans (who caucus in high numbers) who are the top 5 most respected former Iowa coaches. C. Vivian Stringer will be on everyone's list, and the only women's sports coach that men will list. She is loved in Iowa!
I don't believe any person who holds a religious title of any sort (Father, Reverend, etc) should be running for political office in this country.  Even the Bible says to give to Caeser what is Caeser's and to God what is God's.  One cannot serve two masters and I, for one, don't want a minister legislating my secular exsitence.
I remember Huckabees original appearance on the Imus show before the rutgers fiasco.  It was very impressive but he seemed such a long shot then but his authentic non-focused groups ways I think have helped him immensely.  Many of the other people running seem to be taking a page out of the Al Gore 2000 campaign playbook in that they seem to be an amalgamation of a bunch of focused group ideas.  I think after 20 years of Bush-Clinton people are looking for more unfocused group "authenticity" whether they be a Republican, Democrat, or Independent.
I hope he means it about religious arguments not being part of his president.  That would be refreshing, after seven years of God's Annointed starting holy wars and whatnot.  But this constitutional "affirmation of life,' to be consistent, would then have to outlaw executions, wars and letting children go hungry...RIGHT, huckster?
As a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints "a Mormon"  for the past 23 years, I can not understand how people can say that "mormons are or are not Christian" What right do we have to tell another person what they are or are not?
I am Mormon and I believe in Jesus Christ as my Savior. I believe that he showed us a perfect way to live. I know that he died for all mankind and I know He lives even now and mourns at how His message is used so unrighteously.
What makes someone a Christian is not that they go to church, wear a cross or just claim to be. It is how they live. The choices they make with their time, talents and rescourses and mostly how they treat & act toward others.  I try every day to be a Christian.  Somedays I'm not so good. For that I'm eternally greatful that He gave us the gift of repentance.

I found this snip tucked away at the bottom of an article this morning, almost missed it.

NBC's Chris Donovan reminds folks of a lesser-quoted speech JFK made in 1960 in Salt Lake City… It might be of note that just 11 days after Senator John Kennedy gave his religion speech in Houston in September 1960, he went to Salt Lake City to give a speech at the Mormon Tabernacle in which he had a few nice things to say about Mormons. "Tonight I speak for all Americans in expressing our gratitude to the Mormon people -- for their pioneer spirit, their devotion to culture and learning, their example of industry and self-reliance. But I am particularly in their debt tonight for their successful battle to make religious liberty a living reality -- for having proven to the world that different faiths of different views could flourish harmoniously in our midst -- and for having proven to the Nation in this century that a public servant devout in his chosen faith was still capable of undiminished allegiance to our Constitution and national interest."

The public servant Kennedy referenced was Senator Reed Smoot, an apostle in the Mormon church, who had to fight a four-year challenge to the right to his Senate seat over questions of whether or not he would be loyal to his religion versus his country. He was re-elected four times. Kennedy explained: "The story of Reed Smoot symbolizes the long struggle of the Mormon people for religious liberty. They suffered persecution and exile, at the hands of Americans whose own ancestors, ironically enough, had fled here to escape the curse of intolerance. But they never faltered in their devotion to their principle of religious liberty -- not for themselves alone, but for all mankind."

Huck sure is funny, it's to bad that he is wrong on the issues important to most Republicans.
HOW CAN U RESPOND W/OUT COMMENTING ON IMUS RECORD?
GEEZ,IM NOT BLACK,BUT FOR HIM TO SAY WHAT HE SAID
& GET A SLAP ON THE WRIST!!AND STILL BE ON THE AIR??
                WE'RE IN TROUBLE!!
This Do nothign democratic Congressis hold up my tax refund, don't they care about hungry children? don't they want kids to have a nice Christmas? don't they want us to be able to pay off some kids medical bills? GIVE ME MY MONEY NANCY PELOSI!!! GIVE ME MY MONEY HARRY REID. You are sacrificing the children to get elected.
The subject is not so much who can go to heaven as who should go to the White House.  Imus might want to think about pressing issues rather than pressing buttons.  Don, a lot of people don't get a second chance.  Make the most of yours.
Oh, and HUCKABEE '08!
Why would anybody "do" Imus anyway? The man is a jerk with nothing to say except lame jokes. Forget the racist remarks, he is just not very bright.
John in LV: Huckabee Does Imus - at first glance, I thought it was another Republican sex scandal.

You mean, like this:

Cantwell aide arrested in sex sting

WASHINGTON (AP) - An aide to Sen. Maria Cantwell, D-Wash., was in federal custody after being arrested on a charge of attempting to sexually exploit a minor.

James Michael McHaney was fired Friday from his job as a scheduler for Cantwell, hours after he was arrested by FBI agents. The FBI said in court papers that McHaney is accused of trying to set up a meeting with a witness posing online as a teenage boy.
"But the most important poll could be SUSA's survey of California's electoral vote initiative."
Was mentioned by another poster..........that is something I would vote FOR! We in CA. are being hijacked by loose & liberal-extreme special interest groups.
To David Anders:  I agree with everything you said, except "this election is over."  Huckabee is the real deal, and he deserves our support.  Please don't be complacent.

Joe, Tulsa, OK
oh good grief---leave Imus alone.  Ultimately, he was correct in what the Rutgers' Women's B-ball team looked liked---a group of tattooed thugs!  He just said what a lot of people were thinking---but all the self-righteous hypocrites had to stand up to condemn him.  Besides, given the First Amendment, what right do any of you have for condemning Imus?  You may disagree with him, but I doubt if most of you are as intelligent, well-read, perceptive, and articulate as he is.  As for Huckabucklebee:  do we really need another Southern Governor in the White House?  Weren't Johnson, Carter, Reagan (a Southerner at heart--and a real racist as well), Clinton, and Bush enough for one half-century?  Good grief folks!  Get your heads out of your butts and try to think straight.  No Governors at all, no Senators at all---perhaps we need someone from the House of Representatives:  Kucinich (the last of the Roosevelt New Deal Liberal Democrats) or Ron Paul (the last of the articulate Libertarians) will do nicely, thank you.
Hey Kenn don't you have some fake nooses to hang some where? Al's got his marching shoes ready.
Huckabee says that anyone can go to heaven but omits the fact that he believes it can only be done by accepting his brand of faith. He's such a crooked tooth liar.
Republicans love Imus. Imus is a rich old white man. They certainly don't care if he slandered some young black women.
Daniel:

The CA vote initiative is unconstitutional.  Period.  Only state legislatures have the power to determine how electoral votes will be distributed - NOT the voters themselves.  It's a complete waste of time to even pursue it because it will never see the light of day. It will be challenged immediately, a stay will be issued prohibiting it from going into effect and then the courts will rightfully kick it out of existence.
I like Huckabee. What I would like to say to him is that, "If there is a heaven, it is open to everyone, Christian or non-Christian." He should be able to say  with ease that there is only one Truth and that Truth is God which is Love.
I still like him.
I disagree, Kent.  I think Iowans who caucus are smart enough not to put allegiance for a former basketball coach over who will be the best president.
Huckabee should have answered the question "can Jews go to Heaven" with the response "Only if they are Registered Republicans!"
So let me get this straight.  You are covering a radio personality that has been deemed a racist by the media that is "grilling" a presidential canidate that you would not even cover a month ago.  Correct?
And from this we are gather what?
Huckabee may not believe in evolution, but he's sure making monkeys out of the GOP hopefuls.
Mike Huckabee is a breath of fresh air to "politics" because he refuses to become part of the fray.  He has character and humility and speaks FROM middle America NOT FROM the Wall Street hustlers nor the monied-strongholds who are ever-hungry for personal power.

Translation:  HE's one of US hence the attacks from both the right AND left.

Rasmussen has a new NATIONAL POLL out today.  Huckabee is tied for 1st Place!  Now, that's exciting!

To learn more about Mike:  www.mikehuckabee.com
i am soooo glad that there is someone running for president that shares my views on important moral issues and yet refuses to condemn others views!
Governor Huckabee you already have my vote, and thanks for taking the high road and refusing to denigrate the other candidates to mke yourself look good!
My concern with Huckabee possibly becoming President is his publicly stated denial of the fact of evolution. We should not have anyone in a position of such high office who is so abysmally ignorant of basic science. Would you vote for someone who doubts that gravity happens, or that the earth is flat? His position on evolution is just as wrong and just as ridiculous
Do we want a "pastor"/"minister"  -- or a president.  Where is Huckabee's family -- haven't seen them yet or heard much about them?  What about the people he works with in his campaign?  Some are carrying alot of "baggage" as well as Huckabee.
All the candidates that say human life is sacred, and that life begins at conception,do not address sending people to war; or minimizing work injury; or hunger; or inattention to preventive health... Why not?
Isn't it the Christian credo to look after one's neighbor?
i WOULD NEVER EVER VOTE FOR SOMEONE FOR PRESIDENT THAT HAS MINISTER, REVEREND OR FATHER ATTACHED TO THEIR NAME. iTS JUST WRONG. AND I AM GLAD TO SEE OTHER PEOPLE IN THIS FORUM AGREE WITH ME.  I AM NOT ANTI RELIGON, IT JUST HAS NO PLACE IN POLITICS.  ALMOST EVERY PROBLEM IS THIS WORLD IS CAUSED BY RELIGON.  RELIGOUS PEOPLE ARE THE ROOT OF ALL EVIL, ESPICALLY CATHOLIC (THE UNIVERSITY OF PEDOIPHILA).  iTS TIME TO RETURN TO SEPERATION OF CHURCH AND STATE.  AND ANY PREACHER THAT TELLS YOU HOW TO VOTE SHOULD HAVE THEIR TAX FREE STATUS REVOKED.  ONE THAT COMES TO MIND IS BISHOP TOBIN.  THE MAN NEEDS TO STAY OUT OF POLITICS.  I THINK BISHOP TOBINS PARISHES (RI) NEEDS TO HAVE THEIR TAX FREE STATUS REMOVED.
The huckster sounds good but he is sout of step with much of his own party...evangelicals like him until they find out he isn't going to gas non christians or muslims for them....capitalists hate him because he does believe in a fair system rather than everyman for themselves and go live under a bridge if you cant make it like wall street wants...the libetarians wont like him because he does think there needs to be rules and laws...the neonuts won't like him because he isnt' prepared to jail forever any muslim some soldier boy decides is an enemy of the state...gosh now that I think about it his party is made up of losers...
Domernico, you are so right that god gave you the great gift of repentance. It is the gift that keeps on giving and makes religion so popular.  What a great deal it must be to be able to screw up, left and right, then wipe the slate clean by repenting.  It is kind of a get out of jail free card.  It reminds me of a girl I was friends with in college.  She used to chastize me for sleeping with women (un I guess they call them one nighters). Then she had a date one night and I did not make it back to the dorm that night.  When I saw her the next day, turns out she slept with the guy on the first date.  I asked why it was not hypocritical to chastize me for doing the exact same thing she just did.  She calmly explained that since I was not christian, I was going to go to hell for my sins.  However, she could repent (confessions, born again, you name it) and could wipe the slate clean.  And no, she was not kidding.  I thought then, wow, what a good deal to be a christian.  Screw around, left and right and then seek forgiveness.  It is like a lifetime supply of mulligans.
Does either Huckabee or Romney believe in evolution?  That's the question that interviewers and opponents somehow fail to ask.
What defines our rights and wrongs? The secular humanist would say from within ourselves and from the majority of popular opinion within our cultural group. Is murder right or wrong? For me it may be wrong, but for you it may be okay, as long as you don't effect me with your murderous ways. What defines what you believe? Where did we get the idea that anything is right or wrong in the first place? Rape, murder, theft, child molestation. Why are they wrong? Are they wrong simply because the majority of popular opinion tells us they are? What if tomorrow 60,70,or 80% of the US decides that child molestation and rape are proper and viable ways for one human to act toward another? Would it then become right as opposed to wrong? Maybe it won't happen tomorrow, but it could in  50 or 100 years. Are we progressing or regressing? Are we continuing to ascend as a nation or will our children and grand children become decadents of a once great nation that abandoned morality and took its place with all of the other once great world powers that whored themselves out with selfish carnality.
Rodney, Grand Rapids, Michigan WROTE "Huck sure is funny, it's to bad that he is wrong on the issues important to most Republicans".  Sorry Rodney but it's you who's funny Huckabee is right on!  It's too bad we'll have to hear all of the Liberals like you whine for 4 years after he gets elected but it's more than worth the agravation to save our country from another Clinton/Bush Monopoly.
Hey, "IWANT MY TAX MONEY",  your tax money is in IRAQ!! ASK BUSH and his BRAIN to find it for you!
WELCOME BACK IMUS !
why do they attempt to legitimize a nobody like Imus?

sick of "washington" (Sent Tuesday, December 04, 2007 11:16 AM)

Same could be asked about CNN

Everyone should stay away from Imus. He's the liberal's north eastern racist. Let him stay that way.
Freedom of religion in this country, I thought, meant that we are FREE to practice (or not) our faith. This has crossed over so badly that separation of church and state is a joke. I hate it when anyone preaches their religion to me--why do I have to hear about candidates religious affiliations?? If the candidates and our country men and women, kept their religions in their homes and places of worship, instead of constantly comparing one against the other, this country would be so much better. I am sick of politicians, newscasters, movie stars and anyone in the public eye thinking that I care about their choice of faith! Government has nothing to do with religion, at least it shouldn't, except to make sure all you religious folks can practice yours freely. So stop god-blessing me after speeches, and awards shows, etc, and keep it to yourselves.

My idea of a Great President is definitly Huckabee,
he is honest, reliable, intelligent, and most of all
has common sense.  This man will get my vote in the
Pennsylvania Primary, and the general election. I
WAS a Democrat, but who the hell, with any sense of
honesty can say the Democratic Party espouses honesty or integrity.  I do not accept DEFEAT in any war my
country fights, wright or wrong, I love my country and
will follow my president for we elected him by ballot
to lead us into the future.
desires of the general public.
Huckabee is well balanced, genuine, and unapologetically conservative in a way that can really draw people in from both sides of the fence. He is socially conservative and at the same time includes issues like doing right for the environment and children of immigrants under the banner of morality. Way to go Huck! It's about time that someone inspiring ran for office again. Such a contrast to the ever present acrimony in politics these days. It gives me, a jaded 20-something conservative, hope again!
