NH NEA to endorse Clinton, Huckabee

From NBC/NJ's Tricia Miller

The 16,000-member New Hampshire affiliate of the National Education Association has chosen to recommend to its members Hillary Clinton in the Democratic primary and Mike Huckabee in the Republican primary, according to a source within the state NEA.This is the first time the state affiliate has picked a candidate in the GOP primary, and it follows Huckabee’s showing as the only Republican who spoke to the NEA convention in July.

The state chapter's membership is more than 25% Republican, said the source, and the committee didn't want those members to be ignored. When Huckabee spoke at the convention and participated in an interview with the state affiliate, deciding members felt it would be right to point that out to members. Only education and related positions were considered, and the board appreciated Huckabee's "strong views on public education," especially supporting the arts and music. The board might have felt differently if it had considered the former Arkansas governor's opinions on "social values issues" and "war issues," the source said.

The state chapter’s process began with its government relations committee (made up of 15 retired and active members appointed by the state president) and interviews with the candidates, according to Rick Trombley, director of public affairs for the state affiliate. Last Wednesday, committee members had the choice of not recommending any candidates, recommending one candidate or recommending multiple candidates to the executive board. At that time, it chose Clinton and Huckabee.

The board met Friday with the option of ratifying or not ratifying the committee’s recommendation. It could not consider any recommendations other than the one given by the government relations committee. The chapter plans to announce its decision to members as early as this week and has asked the two candidates to be present.

Reg Weaver, president of the national NEA, said he met with all of the Democratic candidates and one Republican -- Huckabee -- in September, and would, in accordance with the NEA's process, make his recommendation to the national organization’s PAC Council in the next couple weeks. The council will accept or reject his recommendation. He said he understands that some state affiliates, like New Mexico and North Carolina, have already endorsed their favorite sons, but he hopes other affiliates will wait to “concur or not concur” with his recommendation.

Scott McGilvray, president of the Manchester Education Association, endorsed Edwards Monday at a roundtable with about 20 teachers. The MEA is the largest of about 200 affililates of the New Hampshire state chapter of the National Education Association, according to the chapter's communications coordinator Carol Backus.

“He's put, in my belief, the most comprehensive education policy on the table of any of the candidates. He is a product -- his wife and family -- of public schools," McGilvray said in his introduction. "[He] was a big proponent, or is a big proponent, of unionized labor and lent his support to the Manchester Education Association in our contract fight earlier in the year and went out and reached out to the mayor and board of aldermen through a letter and conversation and assisted us greatly in that."

This is really important for Huckabee, as he is still looking a bit weak in New Hampshire. If he manages to get a bit stronger here, he might very well be unstoppable by January 9th... but he has a lot of work to do. The latest NH poll released yesterady has Romney at his highest percentage ever: http://www.campaigndiaries.com/2007/12/yet-more-polls-as-huckabee-mania.html
Well, I can tell already who would win in a Clinton vs Huckabee race.

4 long more years of a Republican in the White House.

Oh, yeah, that's right, I'm a Democrat and all you other Democrats should support WHOEVER the Democrat nominee is.

Do you HEAR ME?

Now, them is FIGHTIN' WORDS!!!
I hope the next POTUS can dump the Dept. of Education and NEA. What possible good do they do?
Huckabee is getting crossover appeal that no other candidate in the GOP is right now. He could very well be the GOP nominee for President.
I went and put up Hillary and Obama on education side by side.

Almost even, except in a few areas

The one that got me was.....

Obama wants to give the better teachers better pay....
Hillary just wants merit pay for everyone, regardless of whether they are good or not....

I can see why they went for Hillary....
I hope that Huckabee's own "Willie Horton" (a rapist and murderer named Wayne Dumond) proves to be his undoing, as a Huckabee nomination would likely be the undoing of the Republican party.

Working people have reason to be afraid of an Obama, he favors corporations.

Just ask the dead miners.

wanna know how stupid people are, Hillary hired a union buster for a campaign manager, and the NEA is supporting her and the Unions, the NEA needs to teach the teachers to read first, but they are two busy defending teachers having sex with students

Do you even bother to read anything about your own candidate? Look at who is giving her money and is in her ear before saying anything about any of the other candidates, Republican OR Democrat.

The downside to Obama's plan is that by the time all the bad teachers are weeded out, you'd end up with 100 kids to a classroom until more are trained, correctly, and placed across the country.
An endorsement fromthe NEA?  More proof that Huck isn't a conservative. I'll repeat here that if he's the nominee, I'll vote for HRC.
Modernwoman, I don't think so.  Once it become popular knowledge that Huckabee thinks the world is 6000 years old and there should be an amendment in the constitution banning all abortions (yep, even in the case of rape), he won't have a "prayer".  The religious nuts might be running the republican party, but they are the MINORITY in the rest of the sane world.
The NEA has not endorsed any candidate. The New Hampshire chapter has endorsed candidates as have many other state chapters. Illinois' chapter endorsed Obama as a favorite son. New York's chapter endorsed Hillary. Each state makes that decision. The National Education Association has not endorsed any candidate in the primaries. Merit pay for teachers is a hot button issue. If the only measure of a teacher's ability is the test scores of their students, who will choose to teach students who don't do well on tests-learning disabled, minorities, and other kids with special needs? Those kids need teachers the most!
hmmm, Obamaites seem to skip this post.. guess it's just too factual that Barak is the anti-working class canidate
My dream ticket is Huckabee/Paul.  Huckabee has the charisma to win and can appeal to moderates.  Ron Paul has the best ideas, but is too conservative for most.  His knowledge and experience would make him an excellent Vice President.

Religious values should be allowed to flourish on their own, not be incorporated into government policy.  Ron Paul is the only candidate who will get government out of the way so that religious organizations can do more.  He is also the only candidate who will rein in spending and the semi-dictatorship powers of the executive.  Still, Huckabee strikes me as authentic and does not stray from American values nearly as far as Guiliani/Clinton.  I could vote for him in November if he wins the nomination, so long as he doesn't pick a liberal for his running mate.
Hillary will be the best education president ever
Response to Tuck:

"As a state legislator, Obama worked with both Democrats and Republicans in drafting successful legislation on ethics and health care reform. He sponsored a law enhancing tax credits for low-income workers, negotiated welfare reform, and promoted increased subsidies for child care. Obama also led the passage of legislation mandating videotaping of homicide interrogations, and a law to monitor racial profiling by requiring police to record the race of drivers they stopped. During his 2004 general election campaign for U.S. Senate, Obama won the endorsement of the Illinois Fraternal Order of Police, whose president credited him with having been "immensely helpful in working with police organizations" on death penalty reform."
While in the US Senate Obama has passed Lugar-Obama, a bill that expands the Nunn-Lugar cooperative threat reduction concept to conventional weapons, including shoulder-fired missiles and anti-personnel mines. He has also passed the "Coburn-Obama Transparency Act" provides for a web site, managed by the Office of Management and Budget, listing all organizations receiving Federal funds from 2007 onward, and providing breakdowns by the agency allocating the funds, the dollar amount given, and the purpose of the grant or contract. In addition to those two he has also gotten through the "Democratic Republic of the Congo Relief, Security, and Democracy Promotion Act," which had his name on it as the first sponsor.
He also worked with Sen. Russ Feingold (D-WI) in strengthening restrictions on travel in corporate jets to S.1, the Legislative Transparency and Accountability Act of 2007. And then Obama sponsored with Kit Bond (R-MO) an amendment to the 2008 Defense Authorization Act adding safeguards for personality disorder military discharges, and calling for a review by the Government Accounting Office following reports that the procedure had been used inappropriately to reduce government costs. He sponsored the "Iran Sanctions Enabling Act" supporting divestment of state pension funds from Iran's oil and gas industry, and joined Chuck Hagel (R-NE) in introducing legislation to prevent nuclear terrorism. He also sponsored a Senate amendment to the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) to provide one year of job protection for family members caring for soldiers with combat-related injuries.

First of all, Clinton has not made it successfully through any primary, just yet, so it is presumptuous to assume that she will be our next president.

Second, with the inability of Clinton to ever take a public stand on anything controversial, especially after her vote in favor of the war, to win the nomination she will need to be more than just an intelligent woman. She will need to actually to meet and address the needs of the left wing of the Democratic Party. Without that, it will be a tough battle. Her "hawkishness" and "Bush-lite" appearance, whether correct or not, will have to change and move to the left.

Now, with Huckabee, he is due for an explosion and possible resignation from the campaign, with regards to his role in a rapist's release... See the following story on huffingtonpost.com... http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2007/12/04/documents-expose-huckabee_n_75362.html

BTW, if Clinton makes it to November, I will support her. However, she needs to come clean on her positions and not waffle in the middle. She can win many votes and lose none if she were to be more forthright, take the high road and be less cold and calculating.
Tax hike Mike and Clinton have a lot in common don't they?  They are both socialists and will have all of us paying more taxes.  Do not vote for either of them!
Huckabee and Clinton? This proves that Huckabee is nothing but a fraud.  He is no conservative.  Time to vote for Ron Paul folks!
Will a second Clinton presidency really be a better answer for America, after a second Bush presidency? Before voting for Hillary Clinton, look objectively at her qualifications.

Mr. Huckabee, committed a crime against women by letting Mr. Dumond out of prison.  No educator in their right mind should support this man.  He may be forgiven, but that doesn't mean his crime should be forgotten.  And above all he should not be trusted because he still isn't coming clean, according to the following article: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2007/12/04/documents-expose-huckabee_n_75362.html
I can't believe that a former Southern Baptist preacher is getting so much attention. After going to a southern baptist college I know that he will make Bush look like a liberal. It will be his way or the highway and we really don't need another evangelical in charge of our country. Don't be fooled by him; remember we thought we were getting a compassionate conservative.
Why can't we keep religion out of national politics.
That's really great! "We won't ignore our republican membership so, in their honor we'll choose a republican candidate that's also only 25% conservative".

LMHO!
Madame President of the United States…it's an extraordinary thought. We truly are in a momentous time, where a woman's potential has no limitations," "Hillary Clinton has already proven to a generation of women that there are no limits for success. She is driven by her passion for public service and her belief in the enormous potential of our country. Smart, capable and strong in her convictions, Hillary has transcended the dictates of what is thought to be possible for our time.

"Hillary is a powerful voice for change as we find our country at an important crossroads. Under her leadership, our country will regain its respect within the global community. She will prioritize issues of global climate change, universal healthcare and rebuilding a strong economy. After 8 long years, the public will once again have faith in their government.

"Another former first lady, Eleanor Roosevelt once wrote, 'In government, in business, and in the professions there may be a day when women will be looked upon as persons. We are, however, far from that day as yet.' More than 50 years later 'that day' is now upon us…and Hillary Clinton is ready to shatter through that glass ceiling for all women."

SHAME ON YOU OPRAH!

VOTE FOR CLINTON

My response to the below comment:

Woman liber's everywhere:  how on earth are so many woman supporting a woman that remained with her husband after he blantantly cheated on her!  What message is that sending to young american woman today?  What that boys will be boys!  It is amazing to me how blind people have become just because she is a woman running for President and that that is more important than standing behind your morals and ethics.  How do people stand behind a woman that has so little respect for herself and what it means to be a woman.  I will never tell my daughter, look at Hilary Clinton, what a wonderful role model.  He openly got caught cheating on her once and we all know he did more than that, he just didnt get caught.  With the issue of so many of our young woman these days having such low self confidence I believe we need someone else to look up to.

Ron Paul has a lot of cross-over appeal as well, and is clearly a man of more integrity than Huckabee.
I like Mike.  He's what Leadership looks like ( http://snipr.com/leaderlook ) and for setting Americans free from theIRS and the dregs, he's got the right stuff with FairTax ( http://snipr.com/stephanopoulosdebate ).
Huckabee is more liberal than most of the Democrats!  Check out taxhikemike.org for starters.  Please, people, RESEARCH Huckabee before you support him.  We simply cannot afford Mike Huckabee.

Personally, I support Ron Paul.
Huckabee is a tax and spend liberal.  It is no wonder that a teacher's union would support his candidacy.
While first lady when Bill was governor of Arkansas, Hillary took the Arkansas schools to 49th in the nation.  I guess this is why the teachers union likes her.  What has Hillary ever done?
Good for Hillary.  She has worked on behalf of children and teachers for many years, and not just in the United States but in many other countries as well.

The NEA is *against* homeschoolers or anything dealing with vouchers, tax cuts for those who don't participate in the public schools, or privatization of education.

This proves there wasn't a dime's worth of difference between the Huckabee admin in Arkansas and the Clinton admin.
Mike Huckabee appeals to and has the attention of a broad sector of the U.S. voters.  He is a frontrunner, so now many are trying to discredit him.  However, distorting the truth of his actions as governor will not work.  (Taxes were not raised by the Gov. but by Ark. voters who voted to raise gas taxes, etc.) Hah! The folks who actually go out and vote know how to read!  I'm happy that some of the NH NEA folks have stood up for their candidate of choice - Mike Huckabee.  He is a friend of education and a friend of the people.  I know Mike Huckabee to be a servant leader who is not running for himself but for our country.  What's bugging most who posted here is that Mike does have broad and increasingly bi-partisan appeal.  Why?  Because he's making sense.
Good call Rita. If you call Mike Huckabee "a tax and spend liberal" because he raises taxes to repair roads when 80% of his constituency says "please raise taxes to repair the roads", well then go for it. It isn't always wise to give your unquestioning devotion to the media though.
Where is there support for National Education Association in the Constitution?  It isn't there.  Get the Fed out of schools! States run schools not the Fed!
This is weak for Huckabee!
No, it's "Them's fightin' words"

Volunteers for HUCKABEE.  You gotta believe in miracles!!!
You should look into Ron Paul. He has a lot of cross over appeal, is supportive of both the public and homeschooling systems, and would return the power of education to the states where things could be best managed. Not to mention he has never voted for an unbalanced budget and never voted to raise taxes, and he's the only GOP adamantly against the war in Iraq!
It's true. Between guitar playing, tax and spend Huck and B. Hussein Obama, it is hard to say which personality is more giddy.  One has a record of tax and spend which should make any democrat envious (the liberal education associations obviously love him) and the other Obama has no record at all.  Hey but they are all down to earth like me...so what the heck.
Huckabee claims on air last night that it was the courts that forced him into a net 500 million dollar tax hike to spend on education.  I did the research and education did improve in ARK over the past 10 years assuming the tests aren't rigged.  So I guess Huck has to be told what to do.  He can't take credit for raising education standards because the court forced him to do it, so he says.
