Obama calls for national service

Posted: Wednesday, December 05, 2007 2:46 PM by Mark Murray

From NBC/NJ's Aswini Anburajan
MT. VERNON, IA -- If there was any doubt that Obama models himself after John F. Kennedy, Abraham Lincoln or Martin Luther King Jr. -- as a leader known to be a change agent by his vision for the future -- nothing showed it more than today's speech on national service here at Cornell College.

In Obama's call to the young people assembled in the room around him, he tried to project himself as a leader beyond the day-to-day back and forth in the Democratic primary and the larger partisan divisions between Republicans and Democrats. His message was reinforced by the endorsement of Harris Wofford, a former Pennsylvania senator from Pennsylvania who helped start the Peace Corps under Kennedy

Obama told the story of his start as a community organizer, saying that he wanted to "step into the currents of history." That message of historical change played well in front of the college-aged audience tucked away in small Iowa town. It sought to light a fire in the crowd, one that would bring them to caucus on a cold January night, even if they were not from Iowa and had to travel back to school to caucus.

Unlike Bush, Obama said, "he would not let the moment pass" to call on Americans to do something greater than themselves. Reaching out to seniors and college students through part-time and full time service programs, Obama called for a classroom corps and an energy corps; doubling the Peace Corps; and creating incentives to volunteer (through things like tax credits).

In his speech, Obama appeared to be using national service as a bridge to bring Americans together, and to show that he could fill the large shoes of the leaders that came before.

But is this image working? He appears to be winning over college students. In the sleet and snow last night, students trudged through campuses and yelled and cheered as Obama gave speeches at Grinnell and the University of Iowa. At these rallies with students, he uses a speech he first debuted in Spartanburg, SC, focusing more on creating a vision that is post-partisan, humanistic and global -- rather than the nitty gritty of how to create universal health care, for example.

The best example of this: Obama just received an endorsement from the "Iowa State Daily," the college newspaper of Iowa State. "He may be raw. He may be too optimistic. But he has ignited a passion for a change in the direction this country is headed," the editorial says.

"I'd love to vote for Obama, but cutting the knees out from under the space program is a deal breaker.  On the otherhand calling for people to volunteer is easy, free, and has no clearly measurable results!  Sounds like a typical politician(from either party) being unwilling to do anything ambitious for fear of failing."

I don't think taking funds from GWB's hairbrain scheme to go to Mars is the equivalent of cutting the knees out from under the space program.

Our educational system is in shambles and our children are falling behind our global competitors.  Education MUST be a top priority, more so than space exploration.

Come on, Van. We both know you could insert anyone's name into that sentence - names from every camp.
If Obama is, as you say, an amalgam of Kennedy, Lincoln and King, why are we wasting our time on an election?  Indeed, why are we wasting our time in our churches worshipping false gods?  Obama--my president and my god!  Puhleeze.

This seemingly marks a new theme for you...

Careful reading would find half a dozen posts today bearing my tag with substance about topics that no one here cares to address except in the typical First Read style.

How sooon we forget.
Now that Obama is getting more of the media attention everyone wants to say that the mediais bias.

When HRC was getting and still getting most of the media`s attention it`s not bias at all it`s just reporting.

Well I think it is about time that she share the media light with all the candidates.
gets more coverage than any of the candidates.
Now that he is pulling ahead of HRC in the  Iowa
poll she has to resot to dirty tricks and is not being called on any of it.

WAKE UP AMERICA HRC IS TRYING TO PUSH YOU INTO THE clinton dynasty circle.
Don`t fall for this kind of tactic, it just plain
old DIRTY POLITICS ( the clintons are good at that)
White Water......... Look it up and you`ll know what I mean.

Now think back, I know some of you  may have to think a little harder then some, but who threw the first stone when it came to attacking candidates with the inexperience and naive statements, how soon ww forget
when it is convenient for you and no one else.

Best ticket:
Obama/Edwards 08'
Edwars/Obama 08'

You are missing the point; i am only reporting the news to the blind followers like you. I believe in the freedom of information.

Hillary is toast

Closing remarks from Barack Obama's speech:

http://www.barackobama.com/speeches/

"We need your service, right now, in this moment – our moment – in history. I’m not going to tell you what your role should be; that’s for you to discover. But I am going to ask you to play your part; ask you to stand up; ask you to put your foot firmly into the current of history. I am asking you to change history’s course. And if I have the fortune to be your President, decades from now – when the memory of this or that policy has faded, and when the words that we will speak in the next few years are long forgotten – I hope you remember this as a moment when your own story and the American story came together, and history bent once more in the direction of justice. "
I agree that some form of national service for young people is an excellent idea. This idea has often been mentioned as a means for those who do not elect to join the military to serve their country as civilians. Some have said that it seems somewhat unfair for the soldiers and reservists and their families to carry the major burden of the war in Iraq.

As I remember the Peace Corp, it was not limited to college aged men and women.  People of all ages were able to serve. I tend to think that in terms of regaining our image with the rest of the world, such a service program would be very helpful.  And, I think this is something that Americans do well--we are a compassionate and helpful people and could really make a difference in the lives of  people in developing countries.
Come on, Van. We both know you could insert anyone's name into that sentence - names from every camp.

CitizenJ (Sent Wednesday, December 05, 2007 5:05 PM)

That's bull, pure and simple. Could I insert YOUR name? Would you insert MINE? Have you or I posted links to RNC or hate sites for the candidate we don't support? Of course not, because it means that you can't present a cogent argument.

I do not have to stoop to the kind of garbage that is spewed by Bee or about a dozen others I won't give the satisfaction of seeing their names in print to, and to imply that there is no difference between them and US is insulting to us both.

The fact that there are, 'names from every camp", may be true, but the number of Clinton bashers and haters here far exceeds her  supporters and the supporters of the other candidates combined by a wide margin, as a quick read of any of the topics today would confirm.
Obama supporters, and by that same token, Bee-like Obama supporters constitute the majority on this blog, much to everyone's detriment.

The, "Bee's", of the board represent the worst of us and I won't condone or sanction them or their (for lack of a better term)"contributions" by agreeing with your contention. I don't think I could insert your name in the blank, and I know that I wouldn't want you putting mine there either. There are too many from the Clinton, Obama and Edwards camps who qualify as guttersnipes here I'll concur, but I again don't think the handful of Biden, Dodd, Richardson, Kucinich, and  (if he HAS any supporters) Gravel supporters here are guilty of the sins that the big 3 are, and wouldn't want to tarred with that same brush...

Van
so many have so many facts wrong it is funny. there is so much hate in this room. i see the republicans winning the next presidential election because the democrats in this room can't debate in a civil manner. as an independent i see the way you all spew hate, half facts, lies and campaign talk points.

that will be your justification for not supporting the democrat that does win the primary. then the republicans will win the election and you will get what you deserved.

a bush like administration by another name.

you people are really missing the importance of this election with your petty hate mongering. some of you are so ugly with what you say that even your candidate wouldn't support the way you debate.
Sorry for the Confusion Van, I really meant the thank you.  There are so many people who frequently post off-topic, hateful lies.  You do not, and I appreciate it.  And I don't read carefully enough to differentiate between you and an imposter.
This is from someone who was at the second speech last night.   Of course all the candidates who run for president are smart (yes even Bush), however, I think Obama is one of the smartest candidates to run in a long time. (Think the anti-Bush).  I have listened to a lot of political speeches (IA, and OH) and Obama's speeches are very complex, and inspiring.  He has been on the attack mode since Oct. However, he has been attacking the media, the administration, and informing American's about our own role in Iraq.  Last night, he even had a new barb for the GOP front runner, (Huck) again it is subtle, and people have to be keyed in on subtext.  Again, I think it goes back to his job as a con law prof. I'll try to run down some major themes of the speech (which will probably be in a run for general election) that bought many of those (men and women, under the age of 25) to near tears.
Attack Bush Republicans-made clear distinction
Focused on current situation (econ, edu, etc.) let the crowd know that they a lot of issues are the result of Americans apathy,
Focused on the concept that if people do not watch out for someone's rights, one day their rights will be impacted-this analysis was taken to encompass the major issues we face domestic and foreign
Plan for Darfur
Appealed to the almost universal desire, to have the 21st century, as a American century

I wish I could find a transcript, but there were a lot of things, not only touched on but explored in his speech.
It is odd, when some say Obama speaks only on hope, that is not entirely true, Obama also speaks to what we know is true about our own past behaviors, about our own ego's.  I think it was important that he presented a message that I know my Republican Father in law, could feel proud about, and believe in.  Unfortunately some say liberals (especially the progressive ones) hate America, what Obama did last night was amazing, because he took the idea and inverted it.  He did not go into a partisan bit that conservatives hate America.  He simply  shifted the paradigm, about making America great, and what a great nation achieves. The speech was not pie in the sky, it was grounded in reality, but presenting that reality in a way that makes people believe they have control over their reality.  Why is that so bad?

vanreuter, NY NY (Sent Wednesday, December 05, 2007 5:36 PM)

It wasn't my intention to offend you. Yeah, there are reasonable people on this site that are able to argue without trashing someone, including you and me. But, like you said, they are too few.

It's also true that there aren't many supporters here outside of Clinton, Obama, and Edwards who use these smear tactics, so I apologize to those who I might have offended by associating them with the gutter dwellers.

It's also not my intention to condone their actions, either. I've tried talking sense into a couple of them, but it just doesn't work. And I can't speak to the number of gutter dwellers each camp has, but I could name at least a couple from each camp who are at the bottom of the respect meter. There is no changing their ways, and there is no getting rid of them. But we and others have endured so far, and I have a feeling that we will still be here when they are gone after the election season.
John Edwards did in fact introduce a similar plan that was widely ignored by the mainstream media. He has proposed national service corps. for the youth which would be called the "Marshall Corps.", and would work to provide medical care and aid to the impoverished around the world.  It was John Edwards who for the last year has been calling on Americans to "Be patriotic about something other than war", in his calls for National sacrifice by Americans to stem the tide of Global Warming.

I like Obama.  But Edwards is the real deal.  Obama says he was always against war with Iraq, but inexplicably endorsed Joe Lieberman over Ned Lamont.
No offense taken...

As to the rest of your reply, Amen...:)

Van
Van,

I don't need you to lecture me on civility because you are as guilty as charged.

Your approach is like Hillary Clinton lecturing us on campaign civility why doing something different e.g.  spreading rumor on the following candidates

Richardson
Biden
Edward
Obama

I don't expect anything better from hot head like you.
Van,

I have been readind this blog for a while and i have never seen any intelligent post from you but polls which are bunch of gabbage
When it was time to vote on Kyl Libermann that you later said you felt so strongly about...what was it you said then...NO ONE TOLD ME ABOUT THE VOTE.

When it's time to vote for you Obama, we'll just let the moment pass and say

NO ONE TOLD ME ABOUT IT.

Tell that to your friend, Harry Reid who scheduled the vote in such a way that, unless he could fly cross-country in the matter of a couple hours, there would be no way for him to have voted. Remember who Reid's kid works for...

Besides, better to not have voted than to have voted for it like your girl, Hillary (Bush-lite) did.

EXACTLY! How do you plan a mission to Mars that takes lots of engineering, computer, design, and other skills when our kids can barely read and write and are falling behind those of other countries at an alarming rate? Fix the education system, THEN go to Mars.
The elite Obama speaks again. Him and his wife drive me nuts. If you go see him with Oprah he wants you to sign up and say you will vote for him. She never backed anybody before or voted in the last so many years now an African American runs and she is gung ho. I guess because Oprah says so you are supposed to vote for him. Not in my life time. His wife is the last person I would want ot see as first lady.
tokevon from houston, i heard that response in full. obama didn't say he would not fund the space program at all. he said we need to get our finacial house in order and that he would hold off any additional expenses for about 5 years. the space program wouldn't shutdown.

he wants to get us out of this tremendous national debt that we owe mostly to china who is an adversary that we could have to deal with in the future. china has a hold on this country that has influence on the dollars value. do you realize the kind of security risk that presents to us as a country.

imagine what we could commit to the space program on a balanced budget instead of if we owed our trillion dollar debt to foreign countries. think about it.

he never said he would stop funding the space program or nasa. check it out. a small part of what he said was taken from the text and put in to negative spin. if you check. you can even to see who spun it. you may or may not e suprised what you find out.
cheryl, that is just an ugly lie. oprah is a registered voter and has always voted. those words you posted are an example of the ugliness the perpetuates this room on such a serious matter as voting.

oprah has supported a number of people on various issues of all cultures.

have you ever thought that she is supporting him because she believes in him. she supports him because she thinks his views and ideas bring hope to changing the direction of our country.

it is an insult to say that her only reason for supporting obama is because he is african american. it is borderline racism. you insult black americans if you think we are that shallow.

is bill clinton supporting hillary because she is white? is barbra supporting hillary because she is white? are the black ministers in south carolina supporting her because she is white? don't insult our intelligence with such demeaning stataements.
For those who think Obama is inspiration don't know Obama at all. Sad reality. Disguised comment is right on. I totally agree. The question I have been thinking is how to let more people know the truth and expose him, MMMMM.........
Oh yeah. I base AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALL my decisions in life on Oprah Winfrey. Lemme tell you. I base my decision here on the fact that of all the candidates running, he best fits what I think are important goals and vision for the future of this country.
Endorsement for Barack Obama.

Former US Senator Harris Wofford (D-PA), helped to launch the Peace Corps under the Kennedy Administration and played a key role in crafting legislation that led to AmeriCorps.

Part of Sen Wofford's introduction of Barack Obama:

"The country needs you not only to answer his call to action but to be creative, in your own right to discover the best ways to serve and to build a better country and a better world.
And we need Barack Obama -- to become the next President of the United States".
