On the ground at Romney speech

Posted: Thursday, December 06, 2007 12:25 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ’s Erin McPike
COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- In what some may consider the biggest moment of his political career, Romney this morning gave a speech on faith and the degree to which his own would factor into his presidency.

His overarching point here from the George H.W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum auditorium was that the United States has had a long history of religious tolerance, and therefore he ought not be “elected” or “rejected” on the basis of his faith. He explained in several ways that his faith would not inform his presidential decisions, but he did point out the values system that stems from his faith, and noted, "You can witness them in Ann and my marriage and in our family."

VIDEO: Mitt Romney makes a landmark speech on religious freedom and how his Mormon faith would inform his presidency.

As far as addressing some of the concerns non-Mormons have about his denomination, Romney addressed one thing only: his beliefs about Jesus Christ. About a quarter of the way through his remarks, he explained: “I believe that Jesus Christ is the son of God and the savior of mankind,” but he conceded, “My church’s beliefs about Christ may not all be the same as those of other faiths.”

“I thought it was a remarkable speech, it was an eloquent speech,” said Richard Land, president of the Southern Baptist Convention, who spoke with reporters in the auditorium after the address. Land, who said he will not endorse as a matter of personal policy and obligation to his church, added he thought it was “Kennedy-esque.” Land said he thought Romney’s points were right, and that discriminating against him on the basis of religion would be un-American, as Romney has said before. Asked if he thought there was anything he thought was missing from the speech, Land said he couldn’t think of anything.

But Palmetto Family Council President Oran Smith circulated via e-mail an “Evangelical Review” of the speech. There was one point that caused Smith concern: “Yes, he said Jesus is “Savior of the world,” and he called Jesus “the Lord,” but how is salvation gained.” He provided nine points that he liked, including Romney’s decision not to “go into the specific doctrines of Mormonism.”
Smith also liked his “emphasis on breakdown on family,” his denouncement of secularism and the lack of “the old pre-1993 pro-abortion, pro-gay Mitt.” What Smith liked most of all was Romney’s “sadness over sophisticated religious coldness of Europe,” writing “Wow. Loved that. That was big.”

Romney’s biggest applause line of the speech occurred near the end when discussing the United States’ founding fathers: “And so together they prayed, and together they fought, and together, by the grace of God… they founded this great nation.” Romney received a standing ovation at the line, as well as when he took the podium and when he concluded.

There were slightly more than a dozen applause lines in total, and Romney stuck to the script of the speech. While on the stump, he doesn’t follow the same speech from event to event. Instead, he swaps out sections and inserts sections from location to location. Many of his lines are the same on the stump, but they don’t appear everywhere, and his order is never the same. One note, when discussing radical jihad in this speech, Romney did not give his pronouncements with the same conviction that he usually gives on the stump.

Leading up to the remarks, silence fell over the auditorium at 10:23 -- nearly 10 minutes before President George H.W. Bush and Romney took the stage. In his introduction of the candidate, the former president lavished praised on Romney and his family, including Romney’s father, George Romney, who ran for president in 1968. He said, though, that he has too much respect for many of the candidates to issue an endorsement and has been pleased that many of them have chosen to speak at the library.

Bush also introduced Romney’s sons, four of whom were in attendance. Son Ben, a medical student, was not there. After the speech, joined by Ann Romney and George and Barbara Bush, the candidate motioned to his sons to join them on the stage, mouthing, “Come on up, come on up.” There, began an assembly line of hugs. When Romney left the stage, he went immediately to the audience to greet supporters and religious figures.

America has just found the right person to be our next President, Mitt Romney.  He is a man with great values and passion for our country. America does not get a person such as Romney, running for President that often.  We should not let him get away.
I PRAY THAT ALL WILL UNDERSTAND MITT ROMNEY'S STAND ON THE LDS CHURCH. HE IS A MAN OF THE PEOPLE, AND WILL MAKE A GREAT PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.
Romney sounded very presidential, and as always, looked it.  I liked what he said very much.

Bottom line ...he proposes to be a president with faith in God, but where no church influences presidential affairs.  Likewise, he wants the State to stay out of church affairs.

He wants all men to be free to believe as they will; and he respects them all.

Sounds about right to me.

I've read about 50 reviews today.  Yours, Erin, is the best so far.

A great speech by a fine man.  This should be his greatest moment.
This is what I have to say about Governor Romney's remarks: WOW!  What a rush!  Governor Romney's remarks were fantastic!  No other candidate can beat Mitt's combination of conviction, faith, intelligence, and honor.  But the point that brought it all home for me is that, after his speech, Ann Romney walked onto the stage and stood by her husband.  Anyone with doubts about whether Mitt is the real deal can just apply the Ann Romney test.  There can be no finer man in America than the man who is worthy of and has earned the companionship and support of a woman like Ann for the past 36+ years.  On the other side, do you think that a woman of Ann's caliber would stand next to any of the other candidates ( i.e., Giuliani, McCain, Thompson, Huckabee, etc.)?   No!  Not for a minute!  And if you look at them, no other candidate has a woman at his side as wonderful and remarkable as Ann.  No candidate has the support of his family like Mitt does, and no candidate is as invested in the future of America and the children of America than Mitt is.  MITT was definately "the man" today, and he will surely get my vote come February 5th.
This was an outstanding speech, and showed that Mitt is exactly the type of person and politician that we always hoped would come along to lead the country.
Yes, the president is not a religious position, but it is comforting to know that should Mitt be elected we would have a president of the highest moral, and religious character.
I feel like I just watched George Washington give a speech to America and I am excited for the honor of casting my vote for President Romney.
Romney and others can claim that Mormonism is a religion as much as they want but that will never change the fact that Mormonism is a cult.  And if the President of the Mormon Church decides that God told him to influence US policy...you better believe that he would be on the phone with Romney telling him exactly what to do.  I am someone with a Bachelor's degree in both Bible & Religion and fully understand that Mormonism is a cult and why.   A cult is any group (regardless of size) that interprets the doctrines of a religion in an unorthodox fashion.  Unlike Religions which create their doctrines based on interpretation of book(s) scriptures within their context, cults create their doctrines first and then take the scriptures from the books of other religions and force them outside of their context to fit the twisted ideologies of the cult.  Cults have come out of all religions and Christianity is no exception.  The 2 largest cults that have come from out of Christianity have been the Jehovah's Witness cult and the Mormon Cult.  Next time someone tries to tell you that Mormonism is Christian, keep in mind that Mormon doctrine teaches that their god was once a physical human being who attained god status (the Adam God doctrine of Mormonism), there is no trinity,  Jesus Christ and Satan are half brothers (Satan was not an angel created by God), Blacks were once considered a cursed race by God (until civil rights movements made that inconvenient), Women are second class citizens and will be eternally pregnant with their Mormon husband in the after life ruling over their own planet, you can baptize the dead by proxy using the living and lastly, Mormonism fails every test of archaeology as nothing claimed by Joseph Smith has never been found.

In retrospect, those who have done their homework regarding the Book of Mormon are pretty clear that there was never any Book of Mormon and that Joseph Smith stole a draft of a fiction story titled “A View of the Hebrews” and published it under the heading of “Book of Mormon.  Ultimately, Mormonism fits every parameter of a cult and like all cults...they can change their doctrines at the drop of a hat which is something true religions never need to do.  They may claim to believe in God and Jesus Christ but they are referring to a totally different God and a totally different Jesus Christ compared to Christianity.
"You can witness them in Ann and my marriage and in our family."

Very Very Presidential! Thanks Mitt for clearing up the mud
I was very impressed with Romney and his talk. His intellectualism is of a superior sort and I feel him to be an excellent contestantant for President.
OK. Mitt, we're cool with that, but what about the underwear?
SURELY A MORMON CANNOT BE PRESIDENT

By David Shurtleff

(Not a Mormon -You'll love this play on Julius Caesar's words.)

Helamanites, bloggers, Political Scientists...lend me your eyes. I come to criticize Mitt Romney. The evil that men do is highlighted by the media.

The good is often buried under labels...so let it be with Romney.

The Media has touted that Romney is a Mormon, if it is so, it is a grievous thing and may cost him the election.

When the scandal-laden 2002 Salt Lake Olympics was embarrassing our nation, Romney stepped in and turned it into a showcase –

Yet Romney is a MORMON, and surely a MORMON cannot be President.

Romney won the governorship of Massachusetts as a REPUBLICAN, yes, in a state that gives us Sen. Kennedy. He showed the ability to work with all people, of all political backgrounds

-Yet Romney is a MORMON and surely a MORMON cannot be President.

Romney saved a state government facing fiscal disaster, bringing economic expansion and staving off unemployment something this nation could use

-Yet Romney is a MORMON, and surely a MORMON cannot be President.

Unlike many politicians, Romney has remained faithful to his wedding vows, keeping his commitments to his wife and blessing his children

-Yet Romney is a MORMON, and surely a MORMON cannot be President.

The twelfth article of Romney's faith, one which he no doubt memorized as a child, affirms that it is his duty to honor, obey, and sustain the law

- Yet Romney is a MORMON, and surely a MORMON cannot be President.

Romney's faith group is recognized and respected by governments throughout the world, it was so respected that it was miraculously allowed to build a temple in communist East Germany before the wall came down

-Yet Romney is a MORMON, and surely a MORMON cannot be President.

Romney's church teaches that the constitution is a divinely inspired document and that this nation was established by the God of Heaven. Such respect for our nation and its founding document can make just another politician into a statesman

-Yet Romney is a MORMON, and surely a MORMON cannot be President.

Romney's religious organization teaches love and compassion for all human beings and provides millions of dollars in aid to many countries. It also sent thousands of volunteers to aid Katrina victims in our own country. That aid was given freely, without regard to the religious preference of the recipients

-Yet Romney is a MORMON, and surely a MORMON cannot be President.

Wait a minute. What is it about being Mormon that disqualifies Mitt Romney from being an effective president?

It is true that there may be theological differences that exist between Romney and others, but..... He is not running for Bishop, Rabbi, Pope, Minister, Imam, or Pastor.

He is running for President.

Mitt romney will never be president!  I have spoken.
America just found a true leader in Mitt Romney.
I live in Idaho and have for 40 years.  Mormons are
defined by their religious beliefs!!! I cant imagine
a Mormon President. Scary thought!!
Mitt Romney is the last person we need as our president.  He flip flops on issues and will say whatever it takes to get elected.  He's a religous zealot and we don't need anymore culture wars to distract us from the real bread and butter issues facing us.  He was booed out of Massachuesettes after only one term, and quickly replaced by a Democrat.  That should say something about this man with his slick hair and pandering smile.
I don't care if the man goes out and worships an ant hill; that is his right in this country.  I think he has an outstanding moral character.  If Bush had any religious feelings or morals he would not have invaded Iraq.  Who is this guy who thinks he rules the world?  Romney didn't imply he wanted to rule the world just try to help americans.... lay off the guy.  I would vote for him just on his moral character if nothing else.  josephine of Media,PA
So how would everyone feel if this speech was given by a prophet of Islam?
Wow, I finally felt like I could see into the soul of a politician, like I know who he is.  I agree with the first post, we don't get candidates like this often.
Blah blah blah blah----NO THANKS MITT!
I watched Huckabee outperform Romney at the last debate and my hopes for Mitt were dampened, but his words and emotions shared in today's speech show that he is truly presidential.  Romney is the best candidate and hopefully America will see that, we need the best.
I find it interesting that a few days before his big speech Mitt fired his landscaper after learning for the SECOND time that his landscaper hires illegals as employees. If illegal immigration is so important to him why did it take him so long. He only took action after the Boston Globe unconvered the truth and proved that Mitt was lying during the debate in Florida.  He had to make sure his plate was clean right before the big day at the Bush Library. I'm sure he'll rehire the landscaper in a week or so. The way he flip flops no telling what he'll do next. Mitt Romney can not be trusted PERIOD.
To those who want to include or exclude someone from being president based on their religious affiliation, shame on you.  I was impressed by George Bush being a christian but voted for him because he was the best alternative, not especially competent.  I would rather have a competent Mormon than an incompetent anything.  As long as the president leads the country in the right direction and in not corrupt, thats fine with me.  I was impressed with Huckabee until I researched his record.  Now I think he is a more likeable better speaking copy of Bush who will support amnesty, big spending and other things that I disagree with.  I think Mitt might be right for the job!
ok folks here comes the shocker no one is going to want to hear. being a young democrat back in 1960 and being a part of that election our big concern about JFK and his religion was what was going on in the early civil rights movement. The cathlotic church at that time offered more inclusion for blacks than anyone else.that speech was given more than anything else to reassure the southern democrats that business would continue as usual for the democrat party these solid south in those days meant just that.
I listened to him intently as he "hit it on the head". He defined, very eloqently, the relationship of church and state as well as the history of that relationship.

It was a great speech and I certainly believe that he would make us a "GREAT" President.

Steve Hargrove
On the issue of Mormonism being a cult, my friend Harry in Pheonix seems to miss the point of the unity of those who believe in God.  To answer his point some, however:

Our first and foremost article of faith in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is “We believe in God, the Eternal Father, and in His Son, Jesus Christ, and in the Holy Ghost.”2 We believe these three divine persons constituting a single Godhead are united in purpose, in manner, in testimony, in mission. We believe Them to be filled with the same godly sense of mercy and love, justice and grace, patience, forgiveness, and redemption. I think it is accurate to say we believe They are one in every significant and eternal aspect imaginable except believing Them to be three persons combined in one substance, a Trinitarian notion never set forth in the scriptures because it is not true.

Indeed no less a source than the stalwart Harper’s Bible Dictionary records that “the formal doctrine of the Trinity as it was defined by the great church councils of the fourth and fifth centuries is not to be found in the [New Testament].”3

So any criticism that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints does not hold the contemporary Christian view of God, Jesus, and the Holy Ghost is not a comment about our commitment to Christ but rather a recognition (accurate, I might add) that our view of the Godhead breaks with post–New Testament Christian history and returns to the doctrine taught by Jesus Himself.

That is how we feel about it.  There is room for disagreement in the United States of America without giving labels like 'cult', which connote mind control or brain washing.  Ask a Mormon about why he believes what he believes and he will tell you each person is encouraged to find their own relationship with God to find out truth.

Those who do feel a unity of faith in America, please excuse my directness here, I in no way intend to divide, only to answer my friend Harry.
LOL, RGO, I live in CA as well, I dare you to try and find any significant landscape company in the state that does not employ illegal immigrants!  You might do well to consider all the other industries that are in the same boat.
Could Mitt Romney be any more disingenuous?
I had a friend who had a roommate who was mormon. One of the wierd things they do is keep lots of canned goods in their houses to prepare for the end of the world.  I guess if Mitty gets elected, the White House will be filled with them, or I should say, we should all fill our houses with them because with him as president, it will be the end of the world.
I hear so many people mention that Mormonism is a cult, but I don't see how that speaks to the issue of whether or not he will be a good President. Most of the beliefs of Mormonism I hear espoused by anti-Mormons seem to have nothing to do with a person's capacity to lead the nation and make solid public policy decisions. The fact that the Mormon understanding of Jesus seems to differ from that of Evangelical Christians doesn't provide any basis for rejecting the man from political office.

Sounds like the Bushies are convinced. By Bushies..I mean people who voted for Bush because they believed in his "moral convictions" while ignoring his record and actions. While I do think Romney is the best GOP nominee, he has a long way to go as far as leadership...he's more of a follower who has changed his positions to suit his audience. A brief candid moment does not change his overall methods or approach to "leadership". That being said, I support Obama.
Forget the religious aspect for a moment.  Why did the man (Romney) feel the need to inflate or lie about his hunting expertise?  It's been my experience that when someone lies for no apparent reason, they are either habitual liars or pathological liars.  Either way, those types of individuals generally tell you what they think you want to hear.  Wake up America, or we'll end up getting more of the same thing we've had under the current deranged Administration.
Bigots!  Name any religion, and they all have their flaws! I am not saying that I endorse everything that is said here, I do not.  One thing is sure, you should actually listen to the wonderful speech that he gave on your bigotry and intolerance, unless you're too proud to do so.  He is the most presidential sounding candidate, next to Obama.  He has the best points on the strongest issuses.  But you let your intense dispassion for anything that you don't understand sway that fact.  You poeple make me sick!  If this is where this country is headed, then I am going to the middle east, WHERE IT WILL BE SAFER.  And to the comment about the underwear, it is an outward reminder, of an inward promise.  I've never heard the term "Magic Yarmulke" though the principle for the Jews is the same.  The fact of the matter is you people have no idea what you are talking about.  And to the guy with a "Bible degree", why don't you tell me what faith you are, and I'd be happy to throw down, any day of the week.  The problem for you is, I understand my religion, and you are nothing more than an educated idiot.  Any of you so-called believers need to base yourself in the Bible.  The Savior granted an audience to everyone without prejudice.  Good luck on that in the future.
Mitt Romney was governor of Massachusettes when they started the Big Dig. Remember, the huge tunnel under Boston that was crumbling down on drivers?  He signed off on the shoddy work and cheap inferior materials.  This is not who we need as president.

---------------------------------------------
Are you sounding like George Bush? How can you read his soul? Are you God...Lol

On a more serious note, religious should not be a test in a presidential campaign.

Romney gave a fantastic speech but i won't still vote for him. He has no clue on foreign policy and he pander to the right when it comes to immigration and privacy.

He cannot think on his feet when it comes to hot button issues and i still remember him taking picture with some biggots

The only thing worst than Mitt as President would be Rudy!
"Freedom requires religion" ???!
How about freedom FROM religion?
He has no chance in general election after this.
Go Romney, go!
As a Mormon myself, I still do not understand why such a man of faith voted for gays and lesbians to be in the Army while he was Governor of Massachusetts and now that he is running for President he is backing out saying “this is another time, another era”.  Are you telling me that it was OK to have gay/lesbians running around with guns a couple of years ago and NOT now because there is a real war?  Does this make Romney a man of faith or an opportunist?
RGO
now why would he go and do something stupid like that?  It's not like the world isn't full of landscapers.  To save money?  He has more money than any of you and your kids and grandkids will EVER see COMBINED.  The fact of the matter is that there are a lot of illegal alien landscapers out there... I dare you to tell me that you have never had an alien do work for you.  If you own a home built after the year 1980, or had service on it even, THEN YOU ARE GUILTY TOO.  I've been in construction for the last 10 years, and it's like steriods in sports.  You know it's going on.  It's like mama says "keep your words sweet, because one day you might have to eat them..."
Every true Mormon will testify that Joseph Smith was/is a true Prophet of God, yet I doubt if one Mormon in a thousand can accurately recite any 5 of this great Prophet's actual prophecies. Shouldnít that raise some eyebrows?? Wouldn't you think a church that bases its very existence on a latter-day-prophet would gladly publish an official book that lists every one of his sacred prophecies? Not the Mormons! For good reason!

Not when you understand that almost every prophecy Joseph Smith uttered failed to come to pass. Yet, over 7 million people place their eternal salvation on the line in their testimony that he was/is the one.... who reigns in courts on high...to plead their cause above.....NO! they are not singing about Jesus......but Joseph.

It is said within the book of Morman  that they are THE only TRUE church in the world.  So as I listened to the speech, I wondered about his eloquence at embracing all faiths.
I am absolutely HORRIFIED by this man and his speech! To think that someone running to be president of THIS nation would promote ANY type of religious values is disgraceful. Too many voters in this country are so focused on the religious beliefs of the candidates to think clearly at the polls. In a country FOUNDED on the SEPARATION of "church & state", the ONLY THING voters should be concerned with regarding the religion/non-religion of a candidate is if s/he can be trusted to NOT impose his/her beliefs on the people while governing. Period.
Sure would be awesome to have that kind of depth and understanding regularly displayed by the leader of the entire free world.  I just can't see Romney not being the next president.
Today, I am so proud to be an American!  Mitt Romney's speech is just what we needed!  We need to be reminded of why this country exists in the first place, religious freedom, moral values, brother & sister hood, and freedom and equality for all. I know as President, our country will be in the right hands, a man of integrity, character, and strength of convictions.  We need him as never before!  America do what is right!! Help Mitt Romney become our next President of The United States!!!
Mitt Romey is the epitome of a politican.  He's charismatic, yes.  He's a good speaker, yes.  But he flip flops on issues (used to be pro-gay and pro-abortion, but now he's not...) when it's most convinient and will say anything to get elected.  I'd rather have a president that won't lie to us (had that for 16 years thank you) and will stand by his/her stances on important issues.  I mean, come on Mitt...how can you support something as controversial as abortion one day, and not the next?
I feel very badly for Pat in Huntington NY. She must not have gotten her welfare check on time this week.
I'm an undecided voter at this point. I just read the transcript of the speech and find it to be exceptional. It can be compared to the speech of JFK but it is different. He is speaking to the heart of Americans in 2007. The speech has substance not sound bites. This is a man of greatness. Unfortunately the same eloquence is not shared by some of the respondents. Obviously bigotry is still firmly entrenched in America. I would vote for a Hindu, Muslim, Jew or a Mormon(aka Christian) if he or she has great character and are able to lead the country in the direction that I, as a citizen, believe is best for the land I love. I remain undecided at this point but I am surely leaning more towards voting for Mitt Romney than ever before.
For those of you that still persist in bigoted prejudice against the best presidental canidate we have had in years, if not decades, " You get what you get and you don't pitch a fit!" Or at least that's what I'd say to you if Hilary gets elected because you sit home on election day because a MORMON, won the republican nomination!!!
Mitt and Mike--that's the ticket to beat Billary!
