Huck defends AIDS stance

Posted: Saturday, December 08, 2007 7:46 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ’s Adam Aigner-Treworgy and Domenico Montanaro
ASHEVILLE, N.C. -- Huckabee defended his past stance and written comments calling for a quarantine of those with AIDS, likened homosexuality to "lying" and "stealing" and again lauded the power of prayer in campaigns while speaking to reporters here.

Here’s what he said…
On AIDS: “Fifteen years ago, the AIDS crisis was just that; it was a crisis, and we didn't know exactly all the details of how extensive it was going to be. There were a lot of questions back at that time as to just how the disease could be carried. You may remember the 1991 case of the person who had contracted AIDS from her dentist.

“There was just a real panic in this country, and what I mentioned was that the only time in human history that we had not quarantined people who are a carrier of a disease for which we didn't know where it was going was this time, and if I were making those same comments today I might make them a little differently. But obviously I have to stand by what I said and the fact is that it was unusual for us to do something unlike medical protocols. Medical protocols typically says that if have a disease for which there is no cure, and you are uncertain about the transmission of it that the first thing you do is you quarantine or isolate carriers, and that's historically how we've done that in the public health community.”

But as the AP notes: “When Huckabee wrote his answers in 1992, it was common knowledge that AIDS could not be spread by casual contact. In late 1991, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said there were 195,718 AIDS patients in the country and that 126,159 people had died from the syndrome.

“The nation had an increased awareness of AIDS at the time because pro basketball star Magic Johnson had recently disclosed he carried the virus responsible for it. Johnson retired but returned to the NBA briefly during the 1994-95 season.”

But Huckabee stuck by his 1992 statement, even after a reporter informed him that in 1988, the Surgeon General wrote, "you wont just catch AIDS like a cold or flu because the virus is a different type."

On homosexuality: “I think people have a right to live anyway they want to, but if asked specifically do I believe that it is a normal behavior, I've said all along that I don't, that I think that it is behavior that is outside the boundaries of the man-woman relationship that is traditional marriage.”

Asked if he thinks homosexuality is sinful, he said, “Well I believe it would be -- just like lying is sinful and stealing is sinful. There are a lot of things that are sinful. It doesn't mean that a person is a horrible person. It means that they engage in behavior that is outside the norms of those boundaries of our traditional view of what's right and what's wrong. So, I think that anybody who has, maybe a traditional worldview of sexuality would classify that as an unusual behavior that is not traditional and that would be outside those bounds.”

Asked about saying that there were public health concerns with homosexuality, and he said, “There are a lot of obvious changes in what we understand about the transmission today that we didn't understand in 1992, and I think that's part of the whole issue here. For someone to dig out that 229 question questionnaire, that's going to happen. There'll probably be some more stuff that'll be dug up before now, and that's fine. The one thing that I feel like is important to note is you stick by what you said, and I'm not going to go around changing my opinion on everything.”

On whether he believes God has chosen him, Huckabee said, “Well I've been very, very careful never to say I think God's chosen me, because I think that's a very presumptuous thing for anybody to try to say. So I don't know that, and I did say on that very day that last time I checked God did not register to vote in one of the states in which there's a primary.

“So this isn't about saying God is going to elect me to anything; people will elect me. And as far as the role of prayer, I would like to believe people are praying, not just for me but for our country and praying that we will have a great country and that we'll have a revived spirit in this nation, getting back to that sense of optimism and hope that I've been talking about on the campaign trail. I think that's clearly what's resonating with a whole lot of people.

About using the words “Christian Leader” in his Iowa ad: “It's a historical fact or a description of my biography to use that term,” Huckabee said. “What I've been interested in is that same ad has another banner equal to that that says one of America's five best governors according to Time Magazine. Nobody's asked me about that one, and it's just as descriptive as is the idea of Christian leaders.

“So there was nothing written into that. A lot of people have tried to read something in, and it's more about those who are reading it in. It was not intended to try to say anything about anybody else. It was simply a description of my own biography, nothing more nothing less than that.

“I think it's more about moral leadership, leadership that relates to consistency in one's own life and belief. I don't think a person has to have a particular religious faith to be elected. In fact, I think it's important that we don't have a religious test. Our Constitution says that we shouldn't have one, and I would agree with that. I don't think that anybody should be excluded.

“Go back and look at the tape when Bill Maher interviewed me on his show on HBO a few months ago. I think I surprised him and probably a lot of people when he asked me about Pete Stark's comment, Pete Stark the California congressman, and asked because Pete Stark that week had said he was an atheist. And he asked me, did I think that should disqualify him for Congress. I said absolutely not and, in fact, if anything, I have more respect for a man, who says I'm an atheist and is honest about it than a man who says he's a Christian, but doesn't live like it. So, that's always been my position. I've said that on national television. I say it here tonight and that would remain my position.”

On federal funding for AIDS research and the disconnect between the surgeon general's recommendation and his comments: “Notice what I said in '92,” Huckabee said. “I didn't say that I wasn't for funding, but the question was, ‘Was I for additional funding,’ and I mentioned that there were a lot of diseases that we needed to fund, and that included diabetes and heart disease, and I would add to that Alzheimer's and a host of diseases that effect a lot of American families.

“To single out one disease as the only one that we're going to increase funding for to the exclusion of the others, I think was wrong then. I think it would be wrong now. Do I support additional funding for HIV/AIDS? Yes. I actually did it out of the Governor's Emergency Fund when I was a governor. So my record is one of taking personal initiative to make sure that we did do it, but on the other hand if we only touch that disease, and we leave a lot of people without any consideration who have cancer, who have heart disease, who have diabetes, who have Alzheimer's in their family, then I'm not sure how we can justify that. So that was the point I made then. It's consistent with the point that I continue to make now.”

But what Huckabee wrote then was this: "In light of the extraordinary funds already being given for AIDS research, it does not seem that additional federal spending can be justified. An alternative would be to request that multimillionaire celebrities, such as Elizabeth Taylor (,) Madonna and others who are pushing for more AIDS funding be encouraged to give out of their own personal treasuries increased amounts for AIDS research."

Huckabee added today, “There was still a great deal of, I think, uncertainty about just how widespread AIDS was, how it could be transmitted. So, we know more now than we knew in 1992. All of us do, hopefully, about not just AIDS, but about a lot of things.

“Let me say this, it's flattering that people now are digging back everything I ever wrote and ever said, and there must be something about my campaign that's catching on, but you know if the worst thing somebody can say about me is that 15 years ago, you know, I said that we need to be very careful about this transmission of a disease, then I'm probably going to be okay.”

Homosexuals are no better than liars and thieves?  There's a winning message in the general election...

It's hard to tell who's worse: Romney, who is bigoted towards atheists, agnostics, and Muslims, or Huckabee, who is bigoted towards homosexuals.
You go Mike.  We all had questions back then. Something that was said that long ago is almost, by definition, out-of-context in some regard today.
Huckabee bothers me with his dilution of the christian faith.  When asked about evolution, he wouldn't give a straight answer.  At least Romney stands up for his religous beliefs, even if I disagree with them.  I'm starting to believe the left-wing media is promoting Huckabee because they know he is much more beatable than Romney.
Just reading Mike Huckabee's responses above it is apparent this is a very honest, intelligent, articulate person who respects people of different perspectives.  It is clear he has a handle on what is important, and stands by his beliefs without being arrogant about it.  My respect for him is boosted and increased reading this article.
It's not amazing to me that Huckabee will now try to couch his comments. Frankly if I was that stupid I certainly wouldn't want that repeated now anyway. What he can't get away from is the fact that in 1992, to have that little working knowledge about AIDS, and to be making those kinds of comments about it, shows he was an ingnorant fool. How many messages about how ANYONE could get were there in 1992? Wasn't this after Magic Johnson? And he still was talking quarantine for gays? Whatever I was listening to before about this guy, I'm cool on him now.
I learned about AIDS in 8th grade, which was the 1991-1992 school year.  We learned at that time how it was spread.  I would hate to think 13 year olds knew more about AIDS than an elected official.  Pitiful.
Wow, competent and largely thoughtful responses on decisive issues?  Maybe after seven years of Bush I'm over-crediting Huckabee for sounding intelligent and principled.  Still, it seems unlikely that digging up these fifteen-year-old responses is going to have much of a negative affect on Huckabee's insurgence.

Frankly, given Huckabee's incredily progressive positions on healthcare generally, as well as cancer research and childhood obesity in particular, it's pretty absurd to try to tear him down by out-flanking him on leftist issues by questioning his policies on gays and AIDS research.  A conservative who doesn't hold gay rights and the AIDS cause near and dear?  You don't say!
It may become a great irony that by trashing Huckabee the press and others will popularize him. And if he stands against their objections, if his foundation is firm and the wall does not totter, then they will only be campaigning for him. This is the great potential backfiring of the press in matters concerning popularity.
Mike, when I took a test on the Internet to see what candidate most fit what I wanted in a President your name came closest with 82.5%. I had never heard your name before, but now you are making it a clear choice for me.
Mike Huckabee dances around issues by using humor to hide his failed past and weakness on knowledge of the real issues. We're finding all of the GOP candidates are lying to cover their past except Ron Paul, whose past bolsters his legitimacy as the only candidate worthwhile of the presidency of the United States.
You may not agree with everything Huckabee stands for, but at least you know what he stands for. I respect that. Its refreshing to have a candidate answer a question without trying to please everybody. I dont agree with 100% of Huckabee's positions, but Im comfortable with his integrity. This has put me over the top and Im going to contribute to his campaign.
Are you kidding me Kelly?  I was in my mid 20's back then and even I knew you couldn't catch it like the flu.  Either he was EXTREMELY ignorant or he was being homophobic.  If he was using the rhetoric just to stir up the base, that is just wrong.  I was almost on the Huckabee bandwagon, but the more and more I hear about him, the less I think he would be a good president.

I will probably jump back to McCain.  At least he is not a wolf in sheep's clothing.
Didn't Jesus heal the lepers and not ostracize them?  How did Huckabee miss this lesson in the Bible?  Isn't he a Baptist minister?  This lesson is over 2000 years old, and he hasn't learned it yet.  How could we expect him to understand modern science -- and that AIDS was not contagious through casual contact.  He doesn't believe in evolution, but it appears he doesn't / didn't understand the basics of biology.

I dream of an America free from ignorance and hate.  That's a long way off.
If it was wrong 20 years ago it wrong today also...Homosexuals are not normal....normal is a man and a women not man man or women women....any one with any brains at all can see that...just because tv has tried to make it normal does'nt make it normal.
If you've ever told one lie, you are a liar.  I would say that means that homosexuals are no better than anybody in the whole world since everyone has told a lie at some point in their life.  This is the point Huckabee was making, in the Judeo-Christian worldview, we are all "sinners" and lies, stealing and homosexual behavior are considered sin in the Judeo-Christian Bible.  Hope that helps clarify, but it's just my opinion.
this psycho should get aids then we can lock him up!!
Any democrat would win if the GOP nominates Huckabee, he is just too far off in right field.
Or Shawdow, whose bigoted towards Republicans in general.
A true polition saying what he wants you to hear rather than what he thinks.
Way to go, Mr. Huckabee. Now see if you can get the other foot in there.
I could find no other place to comment on Mike Huckabee  but after reading what he intends to do to taxes it scares me to death. I do not pay income tax, too old, on SS, if I have to pay 23% sales tax, I will be worse off than I am now. My SS barely stretches now even with me doing Ebay to suppliment my income. I cannot support this man at all.
I hope they nominate Huck Finn because the Democrats Obama will become president and the country will become progressive.
The desperate diggers are really grasping here. Oh and to MSNBC -- Huckabee did NOT defend his comments in today's world. Your headline is misleading and patently absurd.
Hmmm, these NBC "First Read" bloggers are pretty obsessed with Mike Huckabee and his consistently evangelical comments.  Trying to out evangelicals as self-righteous, hypocritical, prudish, old school throwbacks?  Interesting, because it seems to me that "journalists" can be some of the most elitist, authority-to-themselves characters (aka Tim Russert).  Question is, from where do they derive their righteousness?  Likely, it is from their own "conscience," which is hardly objective.  FYI, yes, homosexuality is sinful, destructive behavior, not because my conscience says so or just because it has led to the premature death of so many (via AIDS, which is practically 100% preventable for adults in this country), but because an objective authority (Creator of the Universe) says so.  Check out the fate of Sodom and Gomorrah (Genesis 18 and 19).  Take a look at Romans 1:22-32.  Pretty sobering reading - if you are not too self-important and arrogant to think you've already got it all figured out and don't need the input of the Ancient of Days.  Don't guess they teach Proverbs 1:7 at those Ivy League schools.
Huckabee is already hinting that there will be more dirt to come.  He can no longer just make jokes to cover up his past.  This guy has serious problems with positions he took in the past and they are going to haunt him.  He acts like he is surprised that people are digging into his past.  Well, even a bank teller has to have a background check done Huck...what did you expect?
His answer was not "out-of-context." It was a direct answer to a direct question. He said homosexuals were on a level with "liars and thieves." Saying "we all had questions back then" suggests that "we" are all the same. I did not have any "questions" back then about this subject, nor did many people. A person's sexual preference is personal...it does not make them a "liar and a thief." He said it so let him explain it.
Jesus.. are Politicians able to be elcted even though they are so backwards?
So because "we all had questions back then" its somehow okay to exclude tax-paying citizens from the full protections afforded by the constitution?  In essence, we feel that a personal conviction of morality should guide the policy of this country towards exclusion and division?  Funny, that does not seem like the country I love and honor.  When does the day come that we ask government to fulfill its obligations to protect and defend ALL of its people and look to ourselves and our communities for moral guidance and fortitude?  And would that day ever include love and compassion for ALL of our neighbors?  Instead, its seems we continue to live in a time of judgement and derision towards our neighbors.  A time where we balk at our differences and live in fear of each other.   A time of hate and disrespect and dishonor.  I am saddened by this kind of dialogue in our presidential discussion...
Get back in the closet, Shadow.  And take your pro-homosexual agenda with you.  Oh, and your homosexual plague, too.
It's odd he wouldn't increase funding for AIDs research yet wanted to quarantine gays because it was a crisis and an epidemic. I guess he wouldn't increase funding for a Bird-Flu epidemic unless heart and cancer research was also increased, especially if gays were somehow involved. I would be hopeful of a change of heart, since his comments were fifteen years ago, but for his emphatic pledge in the debates that his principles (preconceptions and biases) will never change. I sense the emergence of another American Ayahtollah.  And a rather slick and smooth talking one at that.
To K Whitson,
As indicated clearly by the AP response to his comments, any remotely informed person wouldn't have made those clueless statements now OR then. This clown will be a trivia question(ala Pat Buchanan) soon enough. America deserves much better.
He's got my vote. Sometimes it hurts to hear the truth. This man speaks thetruth. God Bless Him
Any one who believes in creationism is scary and should not be president, period.
15 years ago most Conservative Christians were concerned about AIDs victims not being quarantined. Today only the most virulent believe that. Huckabee isn't one of those. Like most Baptists, much less ministers, he thinks gays are sinners. He doesn't say that they are evil. What he does say is that, he cares about Americans and people in unfortunate circumstances. He cares about balanced budgets, National Security, and prevention of illegal immigration.

Please note I am a Paul supporter, but MSM media smear campaigns, usually with information supplied by the Billary Clinton dirty tricks campaign, remember Hillary and Tricky Dick rhyme. Remember all of the bribery and fraud charges were more directly linked to Hillary than Bill!
Dear Shadow,
I think you misunderstood Huckabee's comments. In his belief system, homosexuality is outside of what is considered normal or right, therefore it is a simple sin, such as lying or stealing. This, however, is not calling homosexuals no better than liars or thieves. He even said so himself that it doesn't mean they are a horrible person.
I'm afraid that you, like many Americans today, participates in selective hearing (or selective reading, in this case). You only pay attention to the parts you want to hear because trying to understand the parts you don't agree with requires actual critical thinking. This is why people find it so easy to call others bigots when, in fact, they probably just have a slightly different world view than your own.
Understanding is always better than name calling.
Huckabee is rising in the polls, so all the dirt has to start flying in his direction.

Look, he stands up for what he believes.  Huckabee is an honest man who should be congratulated for his candidness.

This is the wrong time to try and prove that your beliefs are consistent.  I'd expect a President to have the ability to update their position on the handling of a disease to change as more data was revealed.  He seems  proud that he hasn't budged at all in 15 years.  What a shame.
Ah yes, another man of the cloth spewing bigotry and hiding behind religion.  I have long since passed being surprised at this behavior, but am still stunned at how many people have the same self-inflicted blindness.

So the Republicans now have the choice of:
-A minister who supports the death penalty and homosexuals, plus lobbies for the release of rapists who get out and murder.
-An philanderer who bills taxpayers for his out of town trysts with employees over whom he has authority, informs his wife of his desire for separation via a press conference, skips ALL of the Iraq Study Group meetings to charge mega-bucks for speaking engagements, and won't even get the votes of his children.
-A former Congressman who was a lobbyist for many years, during which time he and his firm provided legal defense to Libyan Terrorists and Pro-Choice organizations
-Several others who somehow manage to be less attractive than these guys

Glad I don't have to make that choice!
Huckabee did not say that homosexuals are no better than liars are thieves, he said that those who lie, those who steal and those of perform homosexual activities are sinning.  The author of this article clearly does not understand what Huckabee was saying, for he did not "liken" lying and stealing to homosexuality, he merely gave examples of other things that are sins and so as those things are sins, according to the Bible, so are homosexual activities.

are homosexuals better than liars and thieves Shadow?  What the basis for your (i assume) opinion that homosexuality is morally acceptable?  Why is it wrong for someone to compassionately believe in a particular moral guideline (by compassionate, I mean that he does not call for the arrest of, maiming of, or ill treatment of someone based on their sexuality....).  It is perfectly legit to believe that homosexuality is a sin without being considered a bigot.  I have very close friends who are homosexual, and they are very aware of my belief that their lifestyle is sinful.  they would NEVER consider me a bigot.  Huckabee's belief is that homosexuality is sinful, he bases that belief in the text that guides his faith and (i assume) his experience with homosexuality.  What do you base your belief on?
Right on Mike!  We make the best decisions we can at the time with the information we have while trying to balance everybody's needs.  As you said, "If that's the worst they can find, you'll be ok."  Go Mike!  My prayers -- and vote -- are for you.
I think it's far more of a sin to be a Fascist like this idiot! Maybe he thinks Gays should be sent to concentration camps for a Final Solution as Hitler did
Jesus!
Reagan and Goldwater would switch to the Democratic Party today. The most sad and disappointed man in America today? George H.W. Bush. He never deserved to have an imbicile son, the WORST PRESIDENT IN THE HISTORY OF OUR COUNTRY...... dubbyah! Clueless bimbo.
Wow, that is scary!
Just what the US needs, another Ignorant Politican!
To ridicule and besmurch an honest man trying to do good, is a sad commentary on our society.  On the religious stuff, seems he is merely saying what the Bible says: homosexuality IS a sin, just like lying, stealing, adultery, fornication, i.e., we are all sinners in need of redemption, and all should try to be better people
It's obvious many of these comments come from people who did not read the entire article above.  Many of the slams on Mike are inaccurate and simply misinformed.  You cannot judge someone without reading the whole story and understanding their perspective.  Wake up America!
Here is a good example of why we cannot run our democracy by reading passages from the bible, laymen will read anything into the words to make themselves the preferred messenger of 'THE TRUTH', I can look in the book and find many reasons not to trust the messenger, we could go for the eye for an eye passage, shall we create a list of not so bad sins and really bad sins, who would be the ones to create said list?
We read the bible for guidence, not to see who our enemies are, their are some in the evagenlical party who would use the bible to explain science, history and why everyday things happen, Years ago Nostradamus was all the rage to explain why things were happening, people today flock to spritualists to see if their dead loved ones are happy.
Gays are people first, if you see them in sexual terms first then you are in their bedroom with them, get out, it's not your business.
I would be happier if your argued that pornography is a bigger threat to marriage, but of course that doesn't resonate well enough with this crowd, there are probably many good christians visiting sex sites everyday, this has become a big family problem and is the true destroyer of marriage.
When there is an economic downturn, domestic violence goes up, violence against children raises and this crowd will ignore that because the party platform is against any kind of social programs and taxes that would help to eleveate the destruction of the families that struggles.
Don't tell me you 'love the victim' you create them everyday with your lazy christianity and free market economy.
The greatest message I learned was, Love thy neighbor as theyself, and forgiveness is the greatest virtue.
We can't be perfect, but we are supposed to try everyday.
I hate to say it but some times it looks as if Nero had it right. One can only sadly imagine the kinds of heart burn those poor lions must have had digesting all that self-righteous indignation. You in the Evangelical crowd are the most self-righteous, condescending bunch of bigots that I have ever had the displeasure of sharing my thoughts with. Please excuse me now for I must draw a bath and cleanse myself of this filth.
If you believe someone's natural existence is a string of endless evil behavior, that is a bigoted view.  After all, if someone's religion told them to think blacks were evil, would that mean they were not bigots because their religion gave them that view?  Please.
I find Huck's comments pretty wishy-washy.  He's a baptist minister and most of them believe homosexuality is wrong (a sin).  They're supposed to 'hate the sin, not the sinner' but that sometimes gets lost in the shuffle.

His answers about it are dodgy.  “I think people have a right to live anyway they want to..." - that's a copout (or silly statement) because no sensible person believes that.  We have laws that restrict certain behaviors.  Further, baptists don't think it's OK to lead a homosexual life.  Huck's not a good enough tapdancer to avoid inconsistencies if he keeps trying to be avoid answering questions directly.

I'm a RP supporter.
