Oprah packs Iowa arena for Obama

Posted: Saturday, December 08, 2007 8:02 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ’s Aswini Anburajan
DES MOINES, Iowa – Folksy and funny, Oprah Winfrey wooed a packed standing-room only hall here Saturday afternoon and asked them to caucus for Obama. Joking about the ice and sleet that rained down on Des Moines, she said if Iowans were committed enough to come out on a day like this, they could come out again on Jan. 3rd.

Winfrey took the stage among a sea of faces, many of whom were there only to see her speak, saying that she knew little of partisan politics and had voted for as many Republicans as she had Democrats in the past. She said she is supporting Obama in this election, because he was "the one," quoting the character Jane Pittman in The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman.

Winfrey praised Obama for much of what he says he stands for on the campaign: conviction, the ability to unite the country and good judgment demonstrated by his opposition to the Iraq War from the beginning. But it was not the praise that she heaped on Obama that made one understand why Winfrey was so compelling. Instead, it was the way she spoke about politics, introducing her speech by saying she wouldn't presume to tell anyone "what to think."

Instead, she said she was giving them something to think about. She swung from a grand eloquence comparing the experience one gains from walking the corridors of power in Washington with walking the pathways of life, to the kind kitchen table gossip that have won over viewers across the United States. She joked that when she wasn't talking about who would win "Dancing with the Stars" with her friends, they expressed an "uh uh, uh," she said when talking about the state of affairs in the country.

In speaking with the throngs of people streaming into the auditorium and then leaving it, many right after she spoke, there was no question that they were there to see Winfrey rather than Obama. The crowd, a campaign staffer joked, looked like a Bennetton ad, filled with diversity that one rarely sees in Iowa. A group of Giuliani supporters had high praise for Winfrey, saying that Obama was lucky to have someone like her, but questioned whether the candidate would be able to sell his message to Iowans.

Others said they were open to Obama because of the speech. One group of women, who got tickets, because their brother was a precinct captain, had never caucused before, and at least three were planning to attend the January caucus partially because they felt Winfrey helped push them towards a call to service. One of the three said that after listening to Obama's speech that she was open to caucusing for him.

Winfrey's speech was sandwiched between a short introduction between Obama’s wife Michelle, and a longer speech by Obama. He praised Iowa and Iowans for their kindness and openness to supporting him, and said that even when he was down in the polls, he would always point to Iowa as a place where voters were listening to him.

The campaign estimated that 18,500 people packed HyVee Hall in downtown Des Moines. That number is several thousand greater than the number of people that appeared for all seven Democratic candidates at the Harkin Steak Fry in September.

People left, but others may have been swayed, which was the whole point of Oprah coming along for the ride. Every little bit helps. Oh and any other candidate, Dem or Repub, is lying if they claim they would not like the chance to get their message across to 18,000 Americans. Actually, for the Republicans candidates, just as long as you're not gay, Hispanic, African American, middle class, agnostic or an atheist, poor, and against the Iraq war. One big empty tent.

Wonder how the Black Christian believers feel about Oprah since she started her own religion and says, "We are all Gods", and "I am the Light of the World".  Wonder how many in the Black community know of her "new religion"?
they will always have something negative to say about a blackman anyway! he can't win he does not o this or that where does he stand on issues etc. but since clintons records r sealed than who can question her or william? but when william had both the house, and senate under his control what did he pass for americans, nafta.
Oprah was the same one who told the world the time for Iraq war was NOW. see how Oprah shoots down an audience who expresses genuine concern about war. she sided with neocons and demonized anyone who spoke against war. others were mislead, but Oprah carried water for neocons, which is worse. hope media asks her why she did what she did. here is the video.

A BREATH OF FRESH AIR AND NEW HOPE FOR AMERICA !!!!
SEN. BARACK OBAMA FOR PRESIDENT !!!!
check out www.nobama.com
^ Ruth Jones above,
o you know anything about the holy Bible at all? One of the apostles said..we are all gods and someone said to us all we are the light of the world...so where is the new religion...I can't believe some.
Oprah has a lot of money – good for her, she earned it! However, I see her efforts as trying to buy who she wants for president. I do not want her money buying our next president. Question: if Hillary was black and Obama was all white, would Oprah still be backing him? I fast forward to him as president and see some national emergency where he has to make decisive strong decisions. I see can't see a good outcome. Would he call on Oprah and ask her opinion? I heard him say something on the news about Oprah being his VP. Scary…, that was telling enough for me. She won’t be VP, of course, but she might try to influence a president if she felt she had helped get him elected. And he would surely feel obligated to consider her favors.
I was slow to come around.  But I'm beginning to believe Obama can win this thing.
Understand Oprah has only one reason to endorse Obama...Race - Pure No Brainer...Sad part is that he is probably aptly qualified to be the Pres but when you have someone who is blatantly racist like Mississippi Oprah (recall the black power fist shake when Jamie F won the Oscar?), her endorsement will be resented by the moral majority ....Wake up Oprah. Jamie won and Barack is qualified NOT because of their skin color!! Stick to sitting in the chair and bilking the sponsors...
If you want someone who is a national security expert, then people like Rudy, McCain or Richardson are your guys.  If you want someone who is concerned about poverty, Edwards is your man.  Political experience Hillary is the candidate.  Senate experience, Dodd or Biden.  Courts conservatives, Thompson or Huckabee.  If you want someone who is not tainted by politics, and maybe the best agent of change it is Obama.  He would also be the first president to champion civil rights from the other side of the issue as he would be the first African American president.
I think Winfrey should stick to her talk show or allow everyone on her show.Or do you have to be black?Get over it Winfrey.I don't want or need you to tell me how to vote.
Lori...  Oprah's not buying the presidency with money.  She's lending her credibility to Obama, that's all.  She carries alot of weight with alot of people.  Her speech today was beautiful...  right on Ms. Oprah!

And yes Larry:  BELIEVE...  it can happen.  He is real.  His intentions are the best and his chances of succeeding are tremendous at this point.  Catch the fire....  come onboard the OBAMA train.  This man can bring the kind of fundamental change, not lip-service change, that this country so desperately needs.  He has vision and wisdom and intelligence and character and compassion and strength.  Without this kind of change, the same old battles will just keep being fought and nothing of any substance being accomplished.  Larry and all:  the moment is indeed now.
Watch it on c-span... the crowd was tight standing room only and if some left it wasn't a significant amount because it was still packed during Obama's speech.

It will be shown again tomorrrow on c-span (and then the archived video will be available on their internet site).

Watch for yourself, First Read is really downplaying the huge, roaring crowd for Obama.
So finally there is a Black Candidate who actually has a chance to win, and look who's playing the race card.
Both Obama and Winfrey were powerful in their eloquence.  I was undecided when I went into the hall and I was a remarkably inspired by their call for change. Obama not only can win this, he will.

When the speeches were over the hall was still packed.  If there were any who only came to hear Oprah, they were very few.
If both Oprah and Obama were both White would their alliance (so to speak) be just because they were White?  Come on people this has nothing to do with race.
YEAH!! OBAMA HAS NO EXPERIENCE!!
As a traditional Conservative, after having been through the rigors of the Bush/Clinton Regencies I am ready for an abrupt change. The Republican contenders appear to be more of the same as are the large majority of Dems. I would certainly support Obama over Clinton any time and I'm seriously inclined to support him over the same warmed over Repulican winner.

Like a broken clock that is right twice a day, Imus has hit on the truth when he refers to 'Hillary' as Satan. The rest are just a bunch of pandering clowns.
NO OBAMA SORRY!!! NO CLINTON EITHER! I like Oprah BUT!!! Oprah thinks everyone is going to listen to her? HA! Obama is a good man but no experience!!! Especially if he's related to CHENEY!! NO WAY!
Why all the upset over Oprah's pick? Most of Hollyweird goes on national tv every chance they get to promote somebody...Streisand, Clooney, 100's of them. Oprah is simply, for the first time, making her personal choice public.  So what?
Boy this board is full of racists tonight!!
To all the whiners before me, get a grip. Other candidates would love to have a room full of Iowans on a day when the weather was horrible. To those bashing Oprah, Barack Obama is the one running for prez not her.
To Chris, Oprah turned against the war, was chastised for it at the time. Had Michael Moore and other anti-war guests on her show. Moore even suggested that she should have run for prez back then. Go to Iowa and try to push your crap and see if your candidate doesn't drop to single digits. Again, people who watch her show, knows where she stands and has stood in the past. Nice try though. 'Kindergate' really worked out well for you, keep up the attack then Barack Obama might just win BIG.
Michelle's opening was wonderful...poised, polished, comfortable. Oprah's speech was unfocused and too much about herself...as is her usual recently. Then came the Senator. Instead of walking in self assured and capable, he deferred to Michelle who "tells him what to do" and to Oprah's star power. I was really disappointed in his performance. C-span's audio was terrible, but the Senator's dropping of the opportunity was worse. He hasn't found his own reason to be in the race...it is as if he doesn't believe himself. I keep waiting to hear a calm, solid, self assured voice speaking of our possibilities in the future...the voice of a leader...the voice asking me to join him in making America its best self. As Senator Bentsen once said..."Senator, you are no John Kennedy." I so want to believe..I so want the change he hints at...I wonder if he can really deliver.
Wow, Jerry/Corpus Cristi takes a couple of days off and in steps another nut (Lori,NY) to fill the vacuum, and with Jerry there is a lot of it. Good going Lori,NY.
McDirt, that's a pretty confusing post. Is there a little racism in there, too? You are accusing Oprah of being racist. But then you're saying her endorsement will be resented by the "moral majority".  I don't know if you mean the Jerry Falwell or Pat Robertson (whoever it was) group, but this is starting to seem like some kind of battle of the races you are talking about.  You know, Hillary is being endorsed by Barbara Streisand.  Dows that mean Barb is a white supremacist? Yeah, I don't think so either. And by the way, jody barsaga, you might wanna actually read the article you're responding to, since one of the first things it says it that oprah made it clear she wouldn't try to tell people what to think. It's called a celebrity endorsement.  Political candidates get/use them all the time.
THERE IS NOTHING RACIST HERE. PEOPLE ARE JUST JEALOUS. WHY NOBODY TALK ABOUT CHUCK NORRIS OR BARBARA STREISAND? ARE THEY ALSO RACIST BY SUPPORTING WHITE CANDIDATES?
PLEASE, THIS COUNTRY IS BETTER THAN THAT. STOP. STOP NOW.
Clintonite haters in full force today, as Hillary, her mom, and daughter, parade around acting 'authentic and grande' (in non-Hillary political speak, planned and paraded and scripted) to try and combat the massive force that is Oprah.

Difference between Hillary and Oprah: Hillary asks women to vote for her because she's a woman.  Oprah asks women to vote for someone based on their own thoughts and opinions.

Which one is a greater trumpet for women's rights?  Well it depends if you trust a woman that made it on her own or trust a woman who only made it into politics attached to a man's hip.

It's no longer 1970.  Women deserve to have their thoughts and opinions respected just as much as their sex.  Suggesting that a vote for a woman purely because she's a woman objectifies her into political pornography.  A strong woman, telling us all what to do.  Suggesting that a vote (or not voting) for a woman because she has the best ideas (or the worst ideas), that transcends sexism and puts woman on an equal plane.

I know I can think for MY self.  And Obama has the answers.
If Oprah's support is all about race why not back Jesse Jackson, why not Sharpton?

Its funny how the envious use thin criticisms with no substance to bash those with true moral fiber.

She is a person with convictions who has a platform to speak her mind, isnt that what politics is about?

I guess its not when you dont agree with someone.
I SAW IN OBAMA THE TRUE NATIONATIST WHO CAN WORK CROSS PARTY BARRIER AND PUT ALL OF US FIRST; LOOK!!! EVEN JESUS TALKED TO SATAN SEVERAL TIMES AND TTOLD HIM WHAT NEEDED TO BE DONE; EXPERIENCE DOES NOT MEAN TRAVELLING IN MORE THAN 82 COUNTRIES OR BEING IN WASHINGTON, BUT EXPERIENCE MEANS BEING PERICLES, BEING ABLE TO FORSEE, TO PREDICT WHAT WILL BE THE CONSEQUENCES THE COUNTRY WILL FACE IN YOUR DECISIONS MAKING AS A LEADER; THIS IS WHAT HILLARY DOES NOT HAVE BUT OBAMA HAS; FELLOW AMERICAN IF YOU REFUSE TO LOOK AT THE FACT, IDEOLOLOGY WILL DESTROY US 4 OR 8 MORE YEARS; WAKE UP AMERICAN AND VOTE FOR OBAMA THE HOPE AND THE FRESH BEGINNING AND TOGETHER WE WILL PUT AMERICA BACK IN HER PLACE IN THE WORLD; ALLEZ OBAMA!!!
Chris,
Based on the link to U-tube video you provided, from where did you get the impression that Oprah was supporting the war and was carrying water for the neocons?  Please separate these two things.

A belief in the existence of weapons of mass destruction does not mean support pre-emptive strike.  Most anti-war supporters were not arguing about the existence of weapons of mass destruction; but were saying that inspite of them, it did not rise to the level of pre-emptive strike because US national security was not threatened.  Neocons were those who believe in transformation of Middle-East by imposing democratic government by the use of US military power.

Judith Miller was not a neocon but a NYT journalist.  Pollock was a liberal scholar who supported US invasion of Iraq.  Please get your facts straight.
How can you call Obama black Oprah? His mother was a white Dunham from Kansas. I know . My name is also Dunham. Why do you not address the white grandmother who raised him?
So many negative comments here.  Simply because Oprah, a good friend of the Obamas, came out in support of a friend and wanted to help.  She has money and fame but, that was not what she was using.  She was simply telling people why she supported her friend.
It's no different from someone who is a friend or family of a candidate.
I don't watch Oprah and am not a fan but, I don't see her as a celebrity in the traditional way.  I did understand she was just coming out in support of Obama.
And the event seemed to be tasteful and well done.  Oprah made a good speech and Obama was really good with his.  Michelle was as classy as always.
And for the person who keeps posting about the war, Oprah has largely been apolitical  until now.  it's different from a person who is into politics.
I personally thought it was great of her to put her name and reputation on the line to help out her friends.
How exciting that a woman who has given voice to many, places her hope for the future of our country with Barack Obama.  It is her first endorsement and in my opinion her most important contribution to the "change" she works towards for our country. For those without hope, home, or health.  This effort will bear fruit.
This is such a waste of time and a sorce of great exhasperation.  Obama has become the republicans favotive democracts, just listen to talk radio and see the likes of Hannity and Limbaugh carry water for him.  And he also happen to be the only one of the top 4 or 5 demorats intheh race that has no chance to win in Nov 08.  None, zip, niente, nada!!!  So enjoy the feel good feeling of nominating a "exiting, hip, charismatic" fellow.  And then watch Giuliani and the right wing propaganda machine turn him into the 2008 version of Michael Dukakis.  By teh way can anybody tell me how he gets 270 electoral votes?
Star Power is overrated. Why candidates think people like Oprah are going to get them elected is laughable. I mean if people vote for Obama because Oprah supports him, that will be a new low in Democracy. People need to be voting for this guy because they agree with his political philosophy and ideas for America, not because Oprah supports him. If Oprah turns people to checking out Obama and they in turn vote for him, then thats good for him.
A lot of people miss the point of Oprah's support for Obama- it has little to nothing to do with "putting an Afr-Am person in the White House." Besides, why does it have to be a "race" thing when Oprah supports Obama- prominent white celebrities routinely endorse white candidates and nobody claims race as a major factor for their endorsement! So the race-obsessed folks need to be quiet! A LOT of Afr-Am politicians have come and gone without Oprah even mentioning them. But note the common themes between Oprah and Obama: hope and inspiration - inspiring everyday Americans to talk about the problems they face and empowering them to enact change, convincing Americans that working TOGETHER, they can achieve and make this nation great. Oprah does this with her talk show - Obama does this on his campaign travels. Both Obama and Oprah happen to be Afr-Ams but they have broad appeal among Americans, of all races, classes, etc. and share a fervent desire for UNITY in our nation. It's such simple common goals and ideals as these that bring Oprah and Obama together. And it's good to see her travelling the country and talking with folks about her support for Obama, particularly considering that for many years she's stayed away from politics. Most importantly, I believe her actions encourage her viewers to become active in the political process, regardless of which candidate they support.
I appreciate what Oprah had to say in Iowa today. But no matter which candidate you stand behind, I see a sad state of mind in some of these comments. If you really want change and progress for this great country, and you want to rid it of racial and political divides, then stop making everything about race. Oprah simply believes in Obama and she is able to look past the image and see what he really stands for, what he can do to make this country better. By bringing her race into it, you are effectively pushing us back a few decades and making change difficult to come by.
Barack Obama is a breath of fresh air, and Oprah is only acknowledging it.  Whether he wins or loses, his influence in American politics is sure to grow, potentially beyond anything we have seen since FDR.  He will also outlive ALL his current peers - something to think about.  If this is a marathon toward the history books, I wouldn't bet against him.  As the wise political sage Peggy Noonan recently observed on "This Week", "he is special, and has the wind at his back....."
"Oprah has a lot of money – good for her, she earned it! However, I see her efforts as trying to buy who she wants for president. I do not want her money buying our next president. "

Better Oprah buying the Presidency for Obama, then the Chinese buying it for Hillary.
This wide eyed idealism is starting to get scary...I have watched Barak since his keynote address at the Dem convention...I said that line outload from the 'Diary of Miss Jane Pitman' that night...I know and feel what Oprah is talking about...but if you send a stranger to Washington, you're going to get exactly that...a stranger in Washington...our situation is too critical at this point in our history to vote with our heart instead of with our head...we have no time...not one split second...to waste on the starry eyed idealisms of our youth.  I love Obama, I'll vote for Hillary and hope that we can get past whatever divisive spirit has been kindled during this Primary...everyone of these candidates is qualified on a dozen levels...can we maybe think of 'team' or 'coalition'...we could be looking at a ready made cabinet instead of picking and choosing!
Barack Obama can be an agent of change, which this great nation desperately needs. Obama is bright enough to have wise political advisors in his cabinst and on his staff. Oprah is supporting him because she has the courage of her convictions, maybe to some degree because of race. However, he has experience, both in the Illinois legislature where he was a Senator and on the national level as a US Senator. Hillary is a carpetbagger who was born in Illinois, is experienced as a First Lady, who never had to vote on anything and has slightly more experience as a Senator, but none worth mentioning. Hillary is trying to get in the White House on the coat tails of her husband.
McDirt should keep his petty comments for the early 20th century racist America he still lives in... One could say Barbara Streisand endorsed Hilary Clinton because she is supporting her white sister...Funny that McDirt never said anything about that...
Can we please stop the racism, this is 2007. Oprah and Obama are good respectful people and they should be given the credit they deserve.
Barack Obama is the best thing that could ever happen to America and Oprah Winfrey is the leading, most influential public figure in the country. Please try to understand. Oprah has done so much and is wise enough to know that Barack Obama will do the same. They are both brilliant, non-prejudiced, open, fair, caring visionaries who know how to strive for change, help others- all others- and get things done. Oprah would support him if he were purple, blue, or pink because she can see past all that and knows in her infinite wisdom that he is the one to lead our country - with HIS infinite wisdom. Please see the big picture. We need to rebuild America now.  Obama can do it.
To Ruth Jones' comments on Oprah starting her "own religion,"because of her comments regarding all people being Gods, as well as being the light of the world...  The scriptures tell us that same thing, and Jesus said that we can do the same as he...even better. He also says that we should be the light of the world, and that our light should not be hidden under a bushel.  That we should go out and brighten someone else's path.  I believe that God uses people to get the job done, and that is what he is using Oprah for, as she has brightened a lot of people's life!  Maybe instead of criticizing someone who's trying to lighten someone else's load, you should follow suit...never criticize unless you can help.
FORGET IT, WHAT WILL YOU ANTI-OBAMA PEOPLE DO WHEN HE BECOMES THE NEXT PRESIDENT?  GO BACK TO WHERE???????
REMEMBER AMERICA IS MADE UP OF IMMIGRANTS.  GO AHEAD ADMIT IT, HE IS 100% BETTER THAN THE CURRENT PRESIDENT AND YOU ALLOWED HIM TO STEAL THE OFFICE TWICE.  AMERICA NEEDS BARACK OBAMA; FURTHERMORE, THE WORLD NEEDS HIM.  IF GOD APPROVES HIM TO BE THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, THEN IT WILL BE.
The Republicans will find a way to arouse anti Africian Americans to defeat Obama. We will have another Republican president. Rove has already assured us
It hurts to see people call Oprah a racist.  She has done nothing but support a friend and state her opinion.  Why attack her?  What has she done?

I realize that race is a sensitive issue, but let's come together in a non-accusatory fashion with belief in the individual dignity of each person.  Ya know, I don't know if a black man (or a woman) can be elected president, but for this election that doesn't matter.  What matters is should I vote for Barack, Hillary, Edwards, Romney, McCain, etc?  Because in the end, one person (not a race or gender) will be in the White House.

My apologies to those who follow these forums closely, you may see this message posted after several articles.
I think Oprah will have more impact on '08 than the media knows or would care to admit...http://enewsreference.wordpress.com
