Clinton shouldn't worry about just IA

With just 24 days to go before Iowa, it appears the race for the Democratic nomination is no longer a tight 1-state contest, but a truly competitive race across the country.

In three new MSNBC/McCLATCHY/Mason-Dixon polls of Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina, the national frontrunner, Hillary Clinton, leads in all three states but her lead is not outside the margin of error in any of those states. Her largest lead is three points, statistically insignificant. Her leading challenger, Barack Obama is nipping at her heels, trailing in Iowa by 2 points and trailing in New Hampshire and South Carolina by just three points.

John Edwards is a major factor in Iowa and South Carolina but trails badly in New Hampshire.

Iowa: Clinton nabbed 27%, followed by Obama at 25% and Edwards at 21%. No other candidate scored double-digits, including Richardson who came in at 9% and Joe Biden who rec'd 5%. As for the all-important second-choice category, all three Dem frontrunners are tied, with 30% picking Obama, 29% naming Clinton and 27% selecting Edwards.

New Hampshire: This is the tightest result for any New Hampshire Dem primary poll this year. Clinton gets 30% to Obama's 27%. Edwards barely cracks double-digits with 10%, with one in five primary voters undecided.

South Carolina: Clinton gets 28% to Obama's 25%. Edwards is a competitive third at 18%. [Note: An earlier version of this post accidentally reprinted the results from N.H.]

A few more macro observations about the surveys:
-- Bill Clinton is still VERY popular among Democrats, in most cases, more popular than all of the actual contenders, though Obama matches the FPOTUS in FAV rating in New Hampshire.
-- Hillary Clinton wins the experience issue by a landslide in all three states, while Obama wins decisively on change.
-- Hillary Clinton's support is what you'd expect: women, folks over 50 and union members.
-- Obama does very well among Democrats under 50. In fact, the biggest demographic gap is generational, not gender.
-- And here's a trend line the Clinton folks might want to worry about, in all three states, she's seen as having run the most negative campaign to date.

Let's get into the weeds of these Dem state polls, all of which were conducted Dec. 3-6. Each survey is of 400 likely caucus or primary voters with a margin of error of 5%.

IOWA
Don't write off John Edwards. Of the big 3 candidates, the former North Carolina senator has the highest FAV rating, trailing only Bill Clinton in popularity. This could bode well on the second choice front.

Clinton is seen as the least honest and trustworthy and the candidate who least represents change. That's bad news for her because those are the two top things that Iowans are looking for. Her advantage is on issues and experience, a category in which she leads by a whopping 52% to 14% margin over Richardson.

NEW HAMPSHIRE
How much progress has Obama made in this state? He's now the Democrat with the highest FAV rating (matching Bill Clinton).

Like Iowa, Hillary leads among women, but a quarter of women are undecided. Can Oprah make a difference for Obama here? Obama's support is overwhelmingly among independents and those under 50.

Also of note, we tested potential 2-way Dem primary matchups between Clinton and Obama and then Clinton v. Edwards. Edwards voters break overwhelmingly for Clinton in New Hampshire, while Obama voters break nearly 3-1 for Edwards. If Clinton and Edwards are sharing some supporters, doesn't that signal that those two may begin going after each other more so than Obama, gambling that the Illinois senator's support is younger and less likely to vote?

Looking at what voters most want in a candidate, Obama leads overwhelmingly on change and is seen as more honest than Clinton. That's good news for him, because those are two of the top three things voters are looking for in a candidate. Issues, though, is No. 1 and Clinton leads that by 12 points.

SOUTH CAROLINA
Obama may have dispelled those doubts among black voters, as he leads Clinton by 16 points among African-Americans. But among whites, Clinton leads by 16.

It's the same story here as the other two states, Hillary is seen as the least honest and trustworthy and doesn't represent change. Obama leads in both of those categories. Clinton leads overwhelmingly again on experience, but as in the other states, experience doesn't appear to be all that important to voters. She is seen as most right on the issues, which is important.

Obama is coming on strong in these three states, and could well win given his current trajectory. He will breakthrough in January based on how people view his candidacy as pulling ALL Americans together to grapple with our mutual challenges outside of the Red State / Blue State or Left / Right dynamic. Obama's life experience has given him this key insight, and it is the experience that really matters. This is the main reason he will win the Democratic Nomination and then win in a landslide in November 08. And he'll have a mandate for change in a number of key areas, something we haven't given our recent Presidents. Most importantly, it is something we want to give to the right candidate who we view as honest, forthright and capable.
Personally, I am most sick of the misrepresentation of Hillarious Clinton's & all of these Democratic frontrunners positions on Healthcare.  it seems that numbers are more important to them than quality of care...  This is because, very simply, they are looking at the wrong numbers.  While "universal coverage" indeed should be a goal, it should rather be the goal of the government to control & regulate the price of healthcare to all Americans...  That can ONLY be done with a form of, (hold your breath, now, Republifascists,) Socialized Medical Care.  Otherwise, costs just keep going up, both to the actual American consumer, & to the business' which are forced to provide them, and money keeps flowing into the pockets (at even greater rates, if you might believe this) than ms. clinton might like to admit...
The SC event today is going to be huge!  It is beginning to take on a carnival-like atmosphere.  The weather is perfect, the people are hyped, the news media is all over it and by all accounts the turnout is going to be tremendous!  This is great news for the Obama campaign and great news for America.
-----CLINTON SLEEZE FATIGUE WILL INVIGORATE GOP, DISPIRIT DEMOCRATS AND SINK DEMOCRATIC TICKET-----

-----EDWARDS/RICHARDSON TO WIN-----

It is possible that Senator Clinton is the best candidate.  However, even though many may like the policies that Senator Clinton proposes, they should also consider her record, just as Senator Clinton insists.
.
The last Clinton Administration, when faced with the fact that protection rackets where assaulting, torturing and murdering people with poison and radiation, chose to avoid its responsibilities to incarcerate the criminals and to protect the citizenry.
.
Instead, they made a deal with the criminal gang stalker protection rackets to leave them alone and to consequently abandon the citizenry.
.
Do we want a President who sells out the citizenry for votes?
.
Do we want a President who sends a "crime does pay" message to society?
.
Would you vote for a President who signed nonaggression deals with the KKKlan or the Nazi party? Gangs that torture with poison and radiation are much like the KKKlan and Nazi Party.
.
We do not need a sellout President. We need a principled leader President.
.
If you are one of the few who do not know what the above refers to, do a web search for “gang stalking” to see the tip of the dirtberg.  Please do it before you decide to reply to my post. Here let me make it easy for you: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=%22gang+stalking%22.

Obama didn't pull a white rabbit out of the hat!! It was a wrecking ball!  YES,, OPRAH will be Obama's wrecking crew. Ms.Oprah will make the Clinton's camp look like chimps of a lost world. Obama and Oprah, the Two O's and was it wise to bring her on board? Well it has the Clinton camp now looking like fools!

Clinton's first mistake, she mouth off and stated she didn't need any support from Hollywood. Now if that wasn't pure conjecture, like who are all those donaters and their thousands billary ended up with?? Just how many more are going to be exposed for dirty money """BILLARY"""??????

Well, It will come down to Mr. G or Mr. H from the other side, You see the Clintons blew it already and America is not ready for gender or black rule, maybe next decade!
who cares. why do i say this? because hillary dillary can never win. she lacks charisma.
Great information and analysis Mr. Todd. You do a very good job explaining this and I really believe you provide some of the best commentary on the current political scene. I'm a dem through and through, but Obama is so inspiring to me. I spent some time in Germany, and it is so sad to see that they want to believe in an America that is a leader once again. Wherever we went, the story was the same. They said they love the Americans, but they don't love our politics right now - they all said they are able to separate the two. I believe Obama can vastly improve our standing in the International community, and for that he has my vote!
i am looking at the whites in SC.  many would mistake it for whites not supporting a black man.  I don't think this is true.  I believe the whites are looking more for experience and national security than change in that state.
The South is much more conservative and more military and national security than any other region.
Whites there probably think Obama is inexperienced.  and they have this pounded into their belief on him by Clinton and the media.  Many are not aware that Obama has more experience than clinton.  11 years in elected office vs. her 7.
I never thought the election was about race or gender.  Maybe alittle in that women would break for HRC.  But, it is simply not that big a deal for people.  and for those who it is, they tend to be Bush republicans.
I remember at Obama's announcement standing in the freezing cold and agreeing with him that it is generational and it's time to pass the torch.  Boomers have proven they cannot govern well.
Ms. Clinton is history. Through all of 2007, she ran the Democratic race as if she was the inevitable nominee for her party. She attempted to stay above the fray, talked and generalities, and even went so far during a debate to say that the reason people are picking on her was that she was "winning". Her campaign manager went even further to say in November that if the election were held [then], that Ms. Clinton would win.

No more. Hillary now is dropping like a stone in the polls. She's been caught in several messy predicaments, most of her own doing. She looks unsure, un-confident, and lately just plain desperate. Having husband Bill around trying to plug up the dike has been more harmful then helpful. Bill's ego seems to get in the way of who he is trying to help. He talks more about himself then her does his wife.

Additionally, Hillary herself has gone negative. Her campaign has been caught staging town hall meetings, having her campaign team show up as plants at Republican debates, and has sent out e-mails claiming Obama is Muslim. Hillary, for someone with high negatives anyway, will probably be getting over 50% negative ratings in the polls. No candidate can win with those kinds of negatives.

Ms. Clinton "rock star" persona is now history. She now is starting to look just another candidate with a lot of baggage that needs to be explained.
Very interesting... But other polls have Obama in the lead in those states... but it does make for interesting, and perhaps exciting contests... Just hope the Hillary Wonks don't try to spin her lead according to you into something it's not. D.
americans not yet ready for a black president, period.
NBC....I dont trust this.
I wish someone would specifically address the major media and Hillary's pass at not being specific on answers regarding, i.e. driver's licenses for illegal aliens. A hard and fast answer is needed, and the press's inability to find the stomach for insisting on it is another story.

EXACTLY why this police officer put down the gun and picked up his musical instruments--making America's only politically edgy music CD @

No matter what people say in Primary, but in real election, there is no chance for black Barak Obama in majority of whites country. Just remember the last Tennessee's senate race, I was thinking Mr. Ford was way more qualified than the white dude, but he could not win because in South, they will never vote for black president in America now, may be in future but not now. I think Hillary still has a shots to win presidency.

I wonder how accurate these polls are...
I'm sure that since Hill brought her daughter and mother on the trail there should be quite a surge for her in Iowa because her campaign is all about bringing a 'buddy'.  Really, is there a better reason to vote for Hill than that her mom is willing to be her buddy? And Hill is really bringing her 'A' game with that nebulous criticism of Obama's health care plan.  And what about that whole 'it takes a Clinton to clean up after a Bush' campaign slogan.  It's really crazy, it's like people won't acknowledge she's inevitable...
Whatever. They're just Democrats. Hardly worth the time and effort. Did you guys get paid for this?
RON PAUL 2008! ! ! !  POLLS ARE SKEWED, NEXT TIME YOU HEAR ONE HANG UP.
Anyone but Hitlery will be fine.  She has entirely to much baggage and the republithugs will crush her in a general election.  Go Obama!
I knew from the start that the Democratic primary would be a tougher race than then Republican one because the candidates are much higher quality.

In the Democratic party, they don't use religion to bait a huge segment of the base. New Hampshire is going to be the most fascinating primary state to me because they allow independent voters to participate in the process. This action will help Obama the most for the Democrats (unless Edwards wins) and Ron Paul.
Out of all those "black women who have gone with Bill", how many were willing participants, and how many were forced into it by sexual and power abuse, and/or rape?

We need THIS back in the white house?
Clinton has the experience of knowing how to appease the public in speach and the knowledge of how to hide untruths. Obama is very flavorable in swaying the public because he has not been in Washington long enough to learn all the tricks, or has he. I think change will override experience.
But what do the national polls indicate?  Iowa and New Hampshire have long since stopped being influential states in the nominating process.  With the advent of the 24-hour news channel and the internet, it seems unlikely that very many people, who would be inclined to vote in a primary, don't already know who Clinton, Edwards, and Obama are.

The function that Iowans and New Hampshirites used to have within the nominating system was they were the folks who got to really know the candidates, so that, if you did well or won in either state and you didn't have a national profile at the time, you gained automatic credibility and would start to get noticed in the rest of the country.  Now, I doubt an Iowa or New Hampshire win gets a candidate even 1 point in the following contests, because the candidates are already known throughout the country.
Will the Clinton's please go away.
It's just the same bunch of crap with these politicos.
God have mercy on us. The people of these United States.
We can do better than this !
HELP !!!!!!!!!
Typical of NBC.  Polling story covers Democrats race.  Not a line about Republican polling.  Demonstrates the NBC agenda to only cover Hilary/Obama/Edwards stats.  For shame.
Will be curious to see if/how Obama's Oprah tour will affect the next set of polls coming out of the three early states.

Also, this poll shows that all you have to do to win the experience polling is repeatedly claim that you have experience.  Biden, Dodd, and Richardson should be leading this, yet Clinton's "35 years" apparently holds up over real experience.
Clinton has an advantage in that older voters are more reliable than younger voters (at least have been in the past), but Obama has an advantage in campaign style and likeability.

Anyone got a coin to flip?
What a sad field of Democrats and Republicans we have before us.
Competition is a good thing in politics, especially when we have such a large crowd of mediocre candidates. Competition will hopefully result in the best choice prevailing, after a tough vetting process. We'll see, though. I'm sure things will only get nastier from this point forward.
I'm shocked anyone believes MSPMS (MSNBC), the organization associated with the Network that refused to thank the troops for their service.
Where were the Kucinich and Gravel stats?
People are beginning to realize that they would like to see an end to the nepotism.  Hillary's spouse was the President. That does not make her any more qualified than George W's wife or Margaret Thatcher's husband for that matter.  America is not a monarchy... we are a representative democracy.  It's time we started acting like one.
Being married to the boss...
failing at enacting health care initiatives...
carpet bagging into a weak senate race post...
and giving Bush the green light to invade IRAQ...
do not qualify one as experienced.

It's time to WAKE UP America...

-  so Rise and Shine.

Obama 2008.
If Clinton is considered the least honest and least trustworthy, Why then would you individuals vote for her?  Obama is considered honest and wants change in the government.  He will choose members of his office that have the same values that he does and with that we might have a chance of becomming a country that the rest of the world respects again.

I would still like to see a republican in office, but we can see the writing on the wall.  It's not gonna happen.
Kucinich and Ron Paul will join together and run as a ticket that all Americans can get behind. That is my prediction.
If she is seen as untrustworthy by the democrats the how is she EVER going to win the general?

I'm white and in the deep south and would happily vote for the black/white man/woman I felt was the best candidate. I won't vote for Obama because of his stance on illegal immigration and I won't vote for Hillary because I don't believe a word that comes out of that woman's mouth. If they were running, I WOULD seriously consider voting for Colin Powell or Condie Rice, depending on their views. Not all whites feel there is no place for a black man or a woman in the White House.

One thing I will say is that Hillary, Bill and Obama seemed to forget that there are WHITES that live in Selma. They completely ignored us while they were here. I'm sure that lost both of them some votes!
NBC is just an arm of the Democrat far left and therefore can't be trusted with any of this. Note their lack of similar coverage of Republican candidates. They don't have any on their rolladex!
What a mess... When will they figure out that EVERYONE on both sides is really running against George Bush and his catastrophic presidency?
The argument that the country will not vote for a black president is tiresome. You can keep your republican vote.
A Democrat as Commander in Chief???
Do you remember during the 2004 election when the Democrats relentlessly mocked President George Bush for only serving as a pilot in the Air National Guard during the Vietnam War versus the Democrats' hero Comrade Senator John Kerry who did not receive a honorable discharge in 1972 but an administrative substitute from peanuts Carter when he was president
in 1978??? Do you remember???
The Democrats at that time claimed that since the President of the United States is Commander-In-Chief and may need to go to war, it was morally unacceptable to send us into battle and that only someone who had served under combat conditions and got three questionable "purple hearts" and a Silver Star with a "Combat V" designation which in the entire history of the Navy, no Silver Star has ever been awarded with "Combat V", was eligible to be
Commander-In-Chief!!!
Okay, which Democrat candidate for Commander-In-Chief  for 2008, qualifies based on the Democrat standard that they set for the 2004 election???
1. Sen. Clinton stealing Whitehouse souvenirs & silverware upon leaving the Whitehouse but not prosecuted??? She asked for a list of things the
military needed to protect against casualties and then voted against the appropriations bill??? Her character assassination attack against Gen. David Petraeus calling him a liar before he even testified before Congress??? Her $$$ backing by felons Soros, & chinese Hsu,  Johnnie Chung, Charlie Trie, other Comrade donators for their cause. She pandered for the illegal vote through drivers license for those that have criminally invaded our country.
2. Sen. Obama says he would invade or bomb nuclear power Pakistan, our ally against terrorists, to show that he is tough on Muslim terrorists??? Or he says
that genocide is no excuse for intervention???
3. Edwards the pacifist king of the lawsuit lawyers
that got rich off suing doctors and now says he would force 800,000 active physicians to give 300,000,000 Americans a physical every year??? Remember his Godly "We will stop juvenile diabetes, Parkinson's,
Alzheimer's and other debilitating diseases"??? Now it is "College for Everyone."
All these Democrats want to be Commander-In-Chief, but then want to give this responsibility to the corrupt anti-American United Nations.
None of these Democrat presidential candidates have served in the military and these character assassination attacks against our present
"voluntary military" is NOT going to make the USA any safer!!! Once the Democrats become Commander-In-Chief there will be a mass exodus from the voluntary military and once again we will need the draft as the
Democrats have all ready talked about !!!
So, how does the above qualify these Democrat candidates to be our Commander-in-Chief that is responsible to: protect our borders, prevent
terrorist or other enemy attacks and retaliate when attacked, and protect us from criminals???
NBC an arm of the "far left."  Guy, you probably think the earth is 4,000 years old, too.  NBC is not only an arm but IS General Electric (GE doesn't just make kitchen appliances).   You are truly an idiot.
As Carl Rove said, "Hillary is fatally flawed".  Like him or not, he's right.  Google Ron Paul and let your common sense guide you. Americans can take their country back from multi-national corporations that own our elected leaders.  It just takes courage and staying involved.
Mohammad, Harold Ford Jr. did just as well as other democrats in 2006, that is 6% better than the vote for Bush in the state in 2004.  It just wasn't enough to win in a solidly red state.  And he was not hit by the 15% lie, a historic phenomenon where black candidates underperform their polling numbers at the booth; he finished exactly where aggregate polls had shown him.
I am so tired of all this "America isn't ready to vote for a black or female President" crap. This isn't Iran or Nazi Germany, contrary to popular liberal left-wing opinion. The American public is EXTREMELY well-informed on the candidates and the issues, and race and gender have NOTHING to do with it.

There are PLENTY of great Americans of ALL races and creeds that I would vote for, but Hillary and Obama are not among them. Of course, as a Republican I am quite biased on this, POLITICALLY! I would gladly vote for Elizabeth Dole, or Colin Powell, or even Condolleezza Rice, all of whom have valuable and extensive experience in government affairs and ALL of whom I would trust to serve responsibly in the office.

As for Hillary, I will not vote for her because a. she plainly stated "we will take from you for the common good," as if government isn't taking enough at all levels already, and b. She squirmed during the debate on drivers' licenses for illegals. I wouldn't trust her as far as I could throw her.

My main concern vis-a-vis Obama is based on experience, not race. Edwards is white, but I wouldn't vote that pretty-boy shyster lawyer who proclaimed the disabled will "rise up out of their wheelchairs and walk" if he is elected into office for dog catcher, never mind President.

The ONLY Democrat I would even consider electing to the Presidency is Joe Lieberman, if he hadn't been driven out of the party for not being sufficiently radical or anti-Bush, that is.

And therein lies the rub. At least there are SOME Republican candidates with moderate or liberal views. Name me one Democrat who ISN'T in the extreme left KOS/MoveOn.ogr tank. That is NOT where the majority of Americans are, or the direction they want to go.

And that is why Rudy Giuliani (most likely) will be our next president, not because he's white or male. So I guess we can start getting ready for four or eight years of Giuliani Derangement Syndrome, soon to be known as GDS. Can't wait!
Hillary Clinton is very much respected in the world community - our world neighborhs see her as a champion of women's and childrens' rights and needs - Hillary does represent change with experience - her election would send a signal to the world that the "cowboy foreign policy of Bush" is coming to an end - unfortunately Obama and Opra are pretending that electing Hillary is only replacing Bush with her, "Bush Light" that call her - I understand their tactic but it is dishonest at its core- with all Obama's talk of unity,Obama is trying to get there on the disengenious campaign of trashing Hillary Clinton's motives for running for president - the nature of beginnings tells the essesnse of a journey and how ironic it is that Obama and Oprah paint their opposition as synical when his campaign is the most synical of all at its core. It is very sad. "

OBAMA IS NOT THE ANSWER!
It is proven over and over in his short time as a senator that Obama doesn't have the nerve to take on tough issues. He continues to avoid voting on abortion and Iran! Seeking a trillion-dollar tax hike and raising the retirement age for Social Security!!!! Is not in favor of a health care plan to cover all children rich or poor. DON’T WASTE YOUR VOTE!  Take a look at his public tenure in the Illinois Legislature, where lawmakers can vote "present!  Instead of yes or no on a bill. Obama, votes “present" on SEVEN ABORTION MEASURES!!!! Unbelievable! (If you can believe that), The President can't vote 'present.'  Nor pick and choose which challenges he will face. This guy is afraid to make ANY decisions. Americans will not sell out this great country for a TV talk show host!!!  DO NOT WASTE YOUR VOTE ON OBAMA he cannot win in the general election. I vote for him is a vote for the Republican Party
********************
It was wonderful to see all three generation with Mrs. Clinton, that’s the kind of support we woman need in this mans world, which is currently a mess! Shame on Oprah! Who put woman back 50years… Madame President of the United States…it's an extraordinary thought. We truly are in a momentous time, where a woman's potential has no limitations," "Hillary Clinton has already proven to a generation of women that there are no limits for success. She is driven by her passion for public service and her belief in the enormous potential of our country. Smart, capable and strong in her convictions, Hillary has transcended the dictates of what is thought to be possible for our time.
"Hillary is a powerful voice for change as we find our country at an important crossroads. Under her leadership, our country will regain its respect within the global community. She will prioritize issues of global climate change, universal healthcare and rebuilding a strong economy. After 8 long years, the public will once again have faith in their government.
"Another former first lady, Eleanor Roosevelt once wrote, 'In government, in business, and in the professions there may be a day when women will be looked upon as persons. We are, however, far from that day as yet.' More than 50 years later 'that day' is now upon us…and Hillary Clinton is ready to shatter through that glass ceiling for all women."
SHAME ON YOU OPRAH!
VOTE FOR CLINTON
Finally, the MSM are waking up to the era of change. I have said it several times that Hillary Clinton is the worst candidate that Democratic Party can present. If they present her, they can kiss the election good bye. Even the hard core Republicans sees Obama differently – My neighbor that listens to Rush Limbghou every day thinks Obama is a unique man that can reach across the party line.

How can a right person with his senses pass on Obama? He is authentic, smart, trustworthy, speak the truth and offer him self for service even when he could have made millions in Wall Street.

I am hoping Democratic Party makes the right decision by electing Obama.
Does any Republican remember who was president when 9/11 happened? Who was protecting our country that day?
what you are still not considering about the blacks is that underneath their skin they still hate the whites for what happened to them.  it is instilled in them from birth.  just look around you at the interaction many blacks exhibit toward whites.  once the pandering stops and obama could be elected, watch his turnaround.

never forget that his mother is an atheist and his father and stepfather were right wing muslins during the formative years of obama's life.  that is imbedded in his psyche.  don't be taken in.
"America is not ready for a BLACK President-Period" Well, based upon the last WHITE PRESIDENT, we can't afford NOT TO HAVE Mr. OBAMA. Really, don't you people hear how truly STUPID you sound? This is how we ended up in Iraq. The reason things don't change is because the American people can't. They would rather see their sons and daughters DIE in a foriegn country just to fulfill some corporate vision of what WE need. Last time I checked I just bought a gallon of gas. I din't make abuck off it! Those of us with above average IQ's get very frustrated with the majority of the inbred, backwood, cousin lovin' hillbilly, redneck philosophy about what can or can't be. You truly disgust me.
