Clinton shouldn't worry about just IA

With just 24 days to go before Iowa, it appears the race for the Democratic nomination is no longer a tight 1-state contest, but a truly competitive race across the country.

In three new MSNBC/McCLATCHY/Mason-Dixon polls of Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina, the national frontrunner, Hillary Clinton, leads in all three states but her lead is not outside the margin of error in any of those states. Her largest lead is three points, statistically insignificant. Her leading challenger, Barack Obama is nipping at her heels, trailing in Iowa by 2 points and trailing in New Hampshire and South Carolina by just three points.

John Edwards is a major factor in Iowa and South Carolina but trails badly in New Hampshire.

Iowa: Clinton nabbed 27%, followed by Obama at 25% and Edwards at 21%. No other candidate scored double-digits, including Richardson who came in at 9% and Joe Biden who rec'd 5%. As for the all-important second-choice category, all three Dem frontrunners are tied, with 30% picking Obama, 29% naming Clinton and 27% selecting Edwards.

New Hampshire: This is the tightest result for any New Hampshire Dem primary poll this year. Clinton gets 30% to Obama's 27%. Edwards barely cracks double-digits with 10%, with one in five primary voters undecided.

South Carolina: Clinton gets 28% to Obama's 25%. Edwards is a competitive third at 18%. [Note: An earlier version of this post accidentally reprinted the results from N.H.]

A few more macro observations about the surveys:
-- Bill Clinton is still VERY popular among Democrats, in most cases, more popular than all of the actual contenders, though Obama matches the FPOTUS in FAV rating in New Hampshire.
-- Hillary Clinton wins the experience issue by a landslide in all three states, while Obama wins decisively on change.
-- Hillary Clinton's support is what you'd expect: women, folks over 50 and union members.
-- Obama does very well among Democrats under 50. In fact, the biggest demographic gap is generational, not gender.
-- And here's a trend line the Clinton folks might want to worry about, in all three states, she's seen as having run the most negative campaign to date.

Let's get into the weeds of these Dem state polls, all of which were conducted Dec. 3-6. Each survey is of 400 likely caucus or primary voters with a margin of error of 5%.

IOWA
Don't write off John Edwards. Of the big 3 candidates, the former North Carolina senator has the highest FAV rating, trailing only Bill Clinton in popularity. This could bode well on the second choice front.

Clinton is seen as the least honest and trustworthy and the candidate who least represents change. That's bad news for her because those are the two top things that Iowans are looking for. Her advantage is on issues and experience, a category in which she leads by a whopping 52% to 14% margin over Richardson.

NEW HAMPSHIRE
How much progress has Obama made in this state? He's now the Democrat with the highest FAV rating (matching Bill Clinton).

Like Iowa, Hillary leads among women, but a quarter of women are undecided. Can Oprah make a difference for Obama here? Obama's support is overwhelmingly among independents and those under 50.

Also of note, we tested potential 2-way Dem primary matchups between Clinton and Obama and then Clinton v. Edwards. Edwards voters break overwhelmingly for Clinton in New Hampshire, while Obama voters break nearly 3-1 for Edwards. If Clinton and Edwards are sharing some supporters, doesn't that signal that those two may begin going after each other more so than Obama, gambling that the Illinois senator's support is younger and less likely to vote?

Looking at what voters most want in a candidate, Obama leads overwhelmingly on change and is seen as more honest than Clinton. That's good news for him, because those are two of the top three things voters are looking for in a candidate. Issues, though, is No. 1 and Clinton leads that by 12 points.

SOUTH CAROLINA
Obama may have dispelled those doubts among black voters, as he leads Clinton by 16 points among African-Americans. But among whites, Clinton leads by 16.

It's the same story here as the other two states, Hillary is seen as the least honest and trustworthy and doesn't represent change. Obama leads in both of those categories. Clinton leads overwhelmingly again on experience, but as in the other states, experience doesn't appear to be all that important to voters. She is seen as most right on the issues, which is important.

Democrats have just as much to offer this country as do Republicans. Some do not seem to realize that there are many democratic families who have democratic loved ones serving in the military too.
We need to stop dividing ourselves and start coming together. There is so much work to be done to restore our standing on the national stage and to repair the damage done in our own country. When you cast your vote for president, do it based on what will be best for the country as a whole, not what will strengthen your own party. I happen to believe that Barack Obama and John Edwards both have good ideas and the desire to take us forward as a nation. No matter who the President turns out to be, that person will not be able to fix everything. We all need to let go of the past and move forward. We do ourselves no good when we indulge in hatred. I am talking to Benton Bain. You have miss quoted so many facts in your letter and the hatred is palpable when I read it. I could correct your statements but I doubt it would change your mind, so I will save my breath. I only hope that most Americans are living in the present and trying to do something to help the country.
Diane says the race is not about race or gender but is generational.  Anyone over 45 OUT, anyone 18-44 IN.
Yeah, yeah, we old worthless Baby Boomers also remember in the late '60's when they said we should not trust anyone over 30.  Yes, we've heard that old line before, Diane.  It was NOT  true now.  It was just immaturity lack of experience talking then as it is now.

diane, what other nuggets of insight do you have for us today?
First off, let me remind the non-boomers that without us "old" people, you would not be watching those HDTV's and listening to your ubiquitous iPods or driving a car with airbags.
Secondly, I love Barak, but his supporters scare the hell of me.  They sound like they are voting, not for President, but for the second coming of Jesus.  I guess if Bill Clinton was the first black President, then Obama could be the first black Jesus.....
Hillary gets elected for 8 years, then Jeb Bush gets his 8 years and then Roger Clinton gets 8 years and so on as nauseum.  Bush - Clinton - Bush - Clinton - Bush - Clinton - ...
Darrell,
I had to read your comment three times before I could believe what you are saying.

You are saying that black women who support Bill Clinton are not willing participants but are being forced into it by sexual abuse and rape???????????????

Surely that is not what you meant to say.  No sane person would spew such craziness.

If I have misunderstood your comment, tell us exactly what you meant.

Please, can somebody explain to me , what is Hillary's experience? Being first Lady, or being in cohoots with all the corruption of the Bill Clinton's White House. For Heavens" sake, Biden and Dodd have years of experience, Why are they not running on the top positions?. Anybody would be better than Hillary!
Hillary Clinton is not the only chose for Democrats. John Edwards and Barack Obama are both wonderful candidates with fresh ideas to take the country forward. Obviously no one can fix everything that is broken in this country but I think either one of those two would make a real change for the better. If we as Americans will allow ourselves to let go of the past and make an effort to reach out to one another, We will see immediate positive changes in the situation. Why is it necassary to compare degrees of service and sacrifice. Let us just be grateful and supportive of those who step forward and dare to try!
Iowa - Obama
NH- Obama or Cinton
Nevada - Clinton
South Carolina - Obama
Illinois - Obama
California - Clinton
New York - Clinton

If all of these states went today I think it would look like this. Hopefully If obama win Iowa and NH that Clinton will not win the states I have mentioned.
When all is said and done, I, like most Democrats, will gladly vote for whoever wins the primary.
The goal is to get the Bush stink out of the White House and it will take at least 8 years to try to clean up the mess he got us into.
As a white dude over 50, I intend to vote for Obama in the Nevada Caucus - but will be quite happy if any of the other candidates win instead. It is a good field of candidates - the GOP should be so lucky.
Hillary Clinton is NOT seen untrustworthy by all Democrats only the Obama supporters who used this negative Repuboican talking point.

Obama uses Republican talking points regularly against his fellow candidates especially Hillary because she is the one to beat.

Unfortunately some Democrats have bought in to his negative campaign sleeze. Axlerod was shocked that the sleezy boring info about Hillary didn't catch on earlier in the camnpaign so he had to go in a new direction...she's not trustworthy,  Twisting the facts and her words.

UNTRUSTWORTHY Let's check into Obama's record.

As a woman, I could NEVER NEVER vote for someone who was untrustworthy enough to not vote for women's rights and try to hid behind it by saying he was just doing it to give political cover to  others.

Obama was not there when we women needed him.  He's not there on health care for us.  He's not there on Social Security for us.

Obama is not trustworthy when it comes to women's issues.  I will not vote for him.
Obama goes negative on Hillary with Republican talking points.  Does he really care if this ends up benefiting the Republicans in '08?

This seems to be mostly about Obama's huge ego and his blind ambition.

And when we end up with a Republican president, against all odds it seemed a few months ago, many of we Democrats will lay the blame at the feet of the ambitious Mr. Obama and we will remember him in any election for years to come.  If Obama does not win this time, Democrats will remember him using Republican talking points to trash a fellow candidate who was strong and positive until he started his negative sleeze.

Because of Mr. Obama's blinf ambition, I will not vote for him in'08 and I will never vote for him in any future election.  And the sad thing is, I would have supported him in the future.  But as most of the people I know say,  "Never Obama, we know him now and he is not for the Democratic party just for HIMSELF."
Obama is NOT honest.  Just look at the way he attacked Paul Krugman.  Google Obama Krugman and read about it.

Obama is trying to win the Presidency by deceiving voters.
In The Year Rome Fell

In the year Rome fell the masses cheered
From a lonely place I watched her burn
In my prison cell the worst was feared
As they swept her ash into history's urn

Her golden age had long since past
Her fleet of proud ships dashed & shattered
Taunt lines that held them strong and fast
Were blurred and frayed, the sails tattered

With moral sextants misaligned
They sailed to rock and petty sea
Truth's hull integrity declined
Rushed in filth and debauchery

As Senator's of place and station
With pockets lined and glad hand grin
Watched Empire walls with strong foundation
Now crumbled, cracked, fall from within

In the year Rome fell, no lessons learned
No voice to warn from dungeon floor
With history changed, and pages burned
The fall of Rome begins once more

Forget polls, what about blimps?  Now Ron Paul has air superiority (along with idea superiority). Unfortunately it took segregationist Governor Wallace to reveal the truth that “there’s not a dime’s worth of difference between” Republicans and Democrats. The Democrats willingly went along with the War in Iraq, suspension of Habeas Corpus, detaining protesters, banning books like “America Deceived’ from Amazon, stealing private lands (Kelo decision), warrant-less wiretapping and refusing to investigate 9/11 properly. They are both guilty of treason.
Support Dr. Ron Paul and save this great nation.

LT  Obviously you have been out of the country sincer Halloween and the MSNBC "debate".

So let me catch you up.  Your comment and complaint was that the media does not have the stomach for insisting that Hillary Clinton give an answer to the questionn of driver's liscenses for illegals.

If you had been in the USA at the time you might have listened to the November debate sponsored by CNN.
When asked if she was for giving liscense to illegals she said NO.  She did not try to wiggle around like Mr. Obama did in that debate with a yes no maybe answer.  SHE SAID NO.

Mr. Obama finally after prodding from the moderator said, Yes he was for giving driver's liscense to illegals.  The confusing thing is that recently Mr. Obama stated that he was not for allowing illegal people to work in the USA.

So, Illegals can drive but not work.  Makes a lot of sense to must of us!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

>>1. Sen. Clinton stealing Whitehouse souvenirs & silverware upon leaving the Whitehouse but not prosecuted??? <<

Oh, that's right! Well, cheer up! If elected, barf, maybe she'll put it back! LOL
Barak Obama has a vision for our country...it secretly involves his giant ego and blind ambition...just as he did in Illinois.

Where is he when the people need him?  He misses votes in the state senate or votes Pass or Present and hides out and misses votes in the US Senate.

Barak is not there when we need him.  He is not there for women.  He can usually be found secretly manipulating and fueling his ego and blind ambition.

OBAMA IS A LOSER.OPRAH SHOULD BE TAKING CARE OF THOSE ABUSED CHILDREN IN HER SCHOOL,INSTEAD OF PLAYING POLITICS.BOTH OF THEM WILL DO ANYTHING TO GET SOME PRESS.LETS TALK MORALS OBAMA AND OPRAH.
MSNBC: post your polling methods, please! Obama is surely the favorite of cell phone only households, which make up more than 25 percent of the population, and yet are STILL being excluded from opinion polling samples!!!!
I don't support Obama because he is a sleaze ball politician. The fact that he is trying to discredit Paul Krugman of all people for correctly stating the obvious flaws in his Republicanized approach to social security and healthcare is really offputting to me.

Definitely, I would have to agree with the Edwards/ Clinton overlap. Now, as much as a sleaze as John Edwards is, I find him more palatable than BO and I am an HRC supporter. JE is a much better option than Giuiliani or Huckabee. The other thing, JE can actually win the general election. True, Obama can carry every state that John Kerry carried (except New Jersey and Pennsylvania if Rudi is the nominee). But, that's it and it is not enough to win the presidency. As soon as Pat Robertson starts telling the evangelicals that Obama is a Muslim, Obama will not be able to pull Ohio or any swing state.

Now, I know Obama desperately does not want to be labeled a Muslim at the expense of insulting the Muslim community. As an aside, this is not very progressive and it is insulting to his Muslim grandparents. However, and the larger point, I live in Northern KY and I have spoken with several Kentuckians and Ohioans that have said Obama is a Muslim plant, Democrats mind you. As an Obama detractor, I have even said "well I don't like his policies and I think he is a shady, Chicago-style politician, but he is not a Muslim." "No," they always reply, "I don't care if he is a Christian now. Once a Muslim always a Muslim."

Like I said, I like HRC (Biden would be my 2nd choice). But, we could lose this election Dems. If it comes down to it, I think JE is more palatable and could actually win.
Just where have the people been for the last seven years that don't want a Clinton presidentcy? This has been the worst administration in the last 100 years and it will take another twenty years to get the country back to where it was. Obama dosen't have a chance of being elected if nominated as about 25 percent say they will vote for him, but they won't.
So another republican administration gets in. The common misconception is that the american voters are smart. So how come the country is in the shape its in?

hillary? obamas?  that slick edwards?  gimmea  break.  give me four more years of good odld goerge doubleyou bush anytday.  he is teh best presdietn ever and i think his spine of steel and his sword of iron shoudl smite the world of its terrarrist.
i'm going to link this at www.obamawall.com

go obama
Obama's message of new faces, fresh ideas, and outside the beltway approaches to solving problems, domestic or international, is nothing more that a re-iteration of what George Bush ran on in the past two presidential elections.  I was fooled once...I will not be fooled again.
I think America is slowly realizing that no matter who they vote for it is NOT going to be the same old families in power.  AMERICANS want change.  I would never have voted for JESSE JACKSON for president.  But I am pretty close to deciding on BARACK OBAMA. I have had enough of the past.  Bring on the future.  Please.
Dear Chuck Todd, Why did you have to bring up race on South Carolina and not the other states? Whenever the media mentions South Carolina you guys bring up race like people here are still picking cotton or in the Ku Klux Klan, which could be further from the truth.
Does "America is not ready for a black president" really translate into "I'm not ready for a black president"? Just curious - because there are alot of folks worried about "America" on this point.

I'm ready for a competent President.
Don DeVan and Shirley Mellecker,
Thank you for your comments and for participating in the forum, as always.
Please see our analyses of the Republican polling in the early states here: http://firstread.msnbc.msn.com/archive/2007/12/09/506450.aspx and http://firstread.msnbc.msn.com/archive/2007/12/09/506448.aspx

It is important, but, not in the best interests of this country, It's Constitution, Sovereignty and personal liberty that any of the top tier candidates from the criminal class gets elected. The repulsives and democraps are the problem and the sooner the American people get up off their knees and throw these bums out of office the better off this country will be. The only candidate that actually would clean out the cancerous infestation in Washington is Ron Paul.
All the rest just represent business as usual and the status quo, which means more of the same corruption, dishonesty and loss of freedom.
After reading these comments it becomes clear why the United States is slipping in status in the world. It seems that there are a lot of people that live in some kind of vacuum and refuse to acknowledge the reality that exists around them. They replace thoughtful comment  with simplistic name calling and repeating ridicules innuendo  apparently thinking that if you repeat something from talk radio others will believe it.

Let is examine the so-called baggage that Hillary is supposed to be struggling with. She is a twice elected Senator with a high approval rating in her home state. While being First Lady she had to deal with her very popular unfaithful husband whose behavior should not reflect on her. She raised their child doing a magnificent job and managed to keep her marriage together under horrendous circumstances. Something that the vast majority of Americans seem unable to accomplish. She and her husband went through what was possibly the most scrutinized 8 years of any Presidency in our history. Her tormentors spent millions of dollars attempting to uncover some dirt that they could use to attack her husband with and the best they could come up with was him getting a blow-job in the oval office.

The rest of the world watched in disbelief as the self-righteous Republicans, one after another marched up to the podium and made complete jackasses of themselves. Bill’s approval ratings climbed into the high sixty percentage points while the Republicans put on their impeachment circus.

Hillary has been tested and she has dealt with everything that her opponents could throw at her and she is still standing. Her intelligence is unquestionable and her experience is vast and pertinent to the Presidency. Eight years in the White house along with her excellent education and time in the Senate has toughened her for the demanding job of leading our country. She is respected around the world and her election to the Presidency would  receive overwhelming approval from the entire world. Our image would be reversed to that of respect and dignity overnight.

The other candidates are worthy competitors but non has the recognition, popularity, or preparedness as dose Hillary. Our country as well as the rest of the world is at a crucial point in history with possibly the very survival of our species hanging in the balance. So we must put aside our petty differences and make a decision that places the well being of both our country and the rest of the world in the forefront of who we place this tremendous burden on when we elect the next President.

Hillary is ready to be President and the country is ready for Hillary.

I am amazed at how many people commenting here are racists.  Having lived through the 60's and living in California where we don't really focus on race, I am disappointed that so many are still as uneducated and ignorant as to judge someone by the color of their skin.  Obama is my candidate and I don't care what color he is, it is his message that I am supporting.  Those of you still living in the past need to move on and make an effort to be color blind and judge people on their message not the color of their skin.
I trust NBC like I trust the Clintons.
I'll vote for Obama or the Clintons when there's a gun to my head.
Wait a minute, no not even then...
I'm starting to think Ron Paul IS the best candidate or Duncan Hunter or Tom Tancrado still like Fred Thompson though.
A long way to go till Nov. '08.
Bottom Line

Of ALL Presidential Candidates from EITHER party the 3 with the LEAST Experience LEAD the DEM PARTY.
Hillary, Obama and Edwards are by far the Least Experienced. Dem voters are clueless.
If you liked the Iraq war and are ready for a newer, broader war in the Middle East, be sure to vote for an MSM candidate.
Otherwise, vote Ron Paul for PEACE!!!
He voted against the war EVERY TIME it came up for a vote. His record on taxes is as good.

I'm sick of the bottom line Obama matra.

IF YOU ARE OPPOSED TO OBAMA YOU MUST BE A RACIST.

That's demeaning and disgusting.  I'm not voting for Obama because he is black.  I'm not voting for him because I think he is wrong on Health care, wrong on Social security, and wrong on his negative holier than thou attacks on the other candidates.

I'm not voting for Obama because he is not there for women when they need him.  He voted "present" or pass in the Illinois senate for women's rights tries to twist out of it by saying he was playing politics and providing cover for other senators.  NO THE TRUTH IS HE WAS NOT THERE FOR WOMEN WHEN THEY NEEDED HIM.

Now do any of those reasons for why I'd never vote for Obama have to do with his being black.

The more you Obama people throw that racial slur at any of us who do not support him, the more many many many of us decide NOT to vote for him.

I'm sick of Obama, his wife, and his campaign playing the race card.

Deal in issues not slime, Obama people

My concern is Mr.Obama always says that he has a "New vision for American people" but he is not telling and explaing to American people that what kind of vision he has for american people but Mrs.Clinton is always explaing american people about health care which She had tried to bring univesal health care for every americans.

The Republicans are salivating to run against Hillary.  Those of you who support her are blind to the intense hatred she inspires among not just those in the GOP, but many, many independents and Democrats of both genders who see her for what she is -- a totally unprincipled person who will say anything and do anything (including sticking with a serial adulterer for decades) just to achieve her life's ambition of being President.  However unhappy or dispirited the Republicans become at who they end up nominating, or however much some of them may not agree with his proposals or background, they will all come together and turn out in droves to defeat Hillary.  And those of us who are Democrats may not have the ability to hold our noses tightly enough to vote for HRC, who gave George W. Bush a blank check not once, but twice, and is cozy as can be with corporate interests.  Nominating Hillary may feel good, but it will result in the Bush policies continuing under a Republican successor.
I watched Tim Russert give Mayor Giuliani a very hard time on his Sunday show and I wondered why he was so easy on Sen. Obama when he appeared on his show.
It is hard to respect Russert and Chris Mathews when they are so biased.
Mathews is the worst because he cannot control his hatred for the Clintons. Most people are tired of his dishonest agenda. Maybe that is why his ratings are so low.
The reporters like to say they go after the front runners, but I have not seen them go after Sen. Obama. I understand the GOP is collecting a lot of dishonest dealings concerning Obama. Chicago is noted for its dishonest political machine.
I don't know what Obama plans are on health insurance, Social Security and the economy. He has been very vague and the press lets him get away with it because they like him. They liked George Bush and look what a bad president he has turned out to be.
So, do the country a favor and be fair and honest in your reporting.
I also think if the press says it is wrong for Sen. Clinton to use the gender card it is wrong for the Obamas to use the race card. Both Senator and Mrs. Obama have used the race card in a number of speeches.
I'm almost sixty and female and I'm going with the best candidate for these times and that would be OBAMA.
Hillary will appoint more Ruth Ginbergs to the Supreme Court
After reading these post's I sure hope the Republicans win. The vast majority of the Democrats writing seem to be paranoid loons. Let's keep the country in the hands of adults.
well, I am 70, and I will not vote for a candidate that is still on training wheels. This is a very big country , and we do have a myriad of problems. On the job training is not what we need at this time, or at any other time
YOU KNOW YOU ARE A RED-NECK WHEN:  You think America is not ready for a black president.  Who cares what color his skin is?  All I care about is the chance he is giving our country to heal the wounds inflicted on it by the Bush administration the past 7 years.  Our country has lost much of the respect it had world wide because of GW, we need someone who wants to take us in a different direction with calm intelligence.  That is not Hillary and surly not Rudy.
Someone please tell me how Hillary Clinton represents change?
Enough of the Clinton's and the Bush's, its time for anyone but a member of either one of these two families to be POTUS.
I am a Republican and I actually like Obama, at least I can watch him on the television and not want to vomit in my mouth unlike when I see Hillary on the screen. I can't believe everyone doesn't see straight thru Hill's smug, pompous, I deserve this because I stayed with that laying skirt chaser, louse of a husband of mine.
I don't think democrats are the smartest people on the planet but I don't believe they are stupid either. I believe dem's do have some principals and morals and at least a vote for Obama assures the party that they can look at themselves in the mirror the day after election day and not hate themselves.
No thanks mama - I'm for Obama !

Obama 2008.
tmoore... With any luck you'll be dead like your brain before the election. God willing
Let me get this right: Bush is SUCH a disaster and white therefore we can't afford NOT to elect Obama?!?!??
HAHAHAHA!
Great logic there!
Mike from Laguna Beach spouts every bit of liberal nonsense in one short paragraph!
Amazing.
I bet Mike from Laguna has never even lived in the South, yet is such an expert in us em hillbilly type folks! Yeeeehawww!
