Dem race tighter than ever; Huck surges

Posted: Sunday, December 09, 2007 8:55 AM by Chuck Todd

From NBC's Chuck Todd, Mark Murray and Domenico Montanaro
If the first round of MSNBC/McClatchy/Mason-Dixon presidential state
polls are any indication, we're in for a wild ride these next six weeks.

The only candidate in either party with a lead outside of the margin of error in the big 3 states (Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina) is Republican Mike Huckabee who sports a double-digit lead over his nearest competitor. No Democrat has a lead outside the margin of error in those three states and the Republican races in both New Hampshire and South Carolina are also margin-of-error close.

We'll get into the weeds of the polls in two party-specific subsequent posts, but here are the basic highlights.  (Click here for more on the Democrats; Click here for more on the Republicans)

All of the MSNBC/McClatchy polls were conducted by Mason-Dixon Dec. 3-6 and they surveyed 400 likely primary or caucus-goers in each case. They have a margin of error of +/- 5%.

IOWA
-- On the GOP side, just three candidates registered double-digits. Huckabee nabbed 32%, Romney followed with 20% and Thompson was third with 11%. McCain was in fourth with 7% and Giuliani nabbed just 5%, his worse showing in any Iowa poll this year.
-- Simply sporting a lead in Iowa right now can be considered good news for Clinton partisans, so while her two point lead over Obama is statistically insignificant, a lead's a lead. Clinton nabbed 27%, followed by Obama at 25% and Edwards at 21%. No other candidate scored double-digits, including Richardson who came in at 9% and Joe Biden who rec'd 5%. As for the all-important second-choice category, all three Dem frontrunners are tied, with 30% picking Obama, 29% naming Clinton and 27% selecting Edwards.

NEW HAMPSHIRE
-- Obama's momentum in Iowa appears to be carrying over to New Hampshire as he trails Clinton by a mere three points. This is the tightest result for any New Hampshire Dem primary poll this year. Clinton gets 30% to Obama's 27%. Edwards barely cracks double-digits with 10%, with one in five primary voters undecided.
-- Could the GOP primary be turning into a 4-way race? Possibly. Romney's once insurmountable lead appears, well, surmountable. He leads the field with 25%, followed by Giuliani at 17%, McCain gets 16% and Huckabee edges into double-digits with 11%. Nearly one in six voters are undecided.

SOUTH CAROLINA
-- In The Dem race, Clinton's lead is just three points over Obama, 28-25, with John Edwards scoring a very competitive 18%. (Remember, Edwards won this state in the '04 primaries). No other Dem receives more than 2%.
-- On the GOP side, the improbable rise of Huckabee is not just an Iowa story anymore. The former Arkansas governor leads a very competitive primary with 20%, followed very closely by Giuliani at 17%, Romney at 15%, Thompson at 14% and McCain at 10%. Nearly one in five S.C. Republicans are undecided, highlighting the fluidity of the race.

NEVADA
Mason-Dixon also has a Nevada poll out Sunday that the firm conducted for the Las Vegas Review-Journal.  The survey was conducted Dec. 3-5 with 300 likely caucus-goers surveyed in each party. On the Dem side, Clinton led with 34% followed by Obama at 26%. No other Dem popped into double-digits as Edwards rec'd 9% and Richardson 7%.

Among Nevada Republicans, Giuliani led with 25%, followed closely by Romney at 20% and Huckabee at 17%. Thompson and McCain failed to register in double-digits with 9% and 7% respectively.

No thanks mama - I'm for Obama !

Obama 2008.
Frederick "good ole boy" from Queens, My take is that you're about as big a racist as I've seen! The "statement" isn't that America isn't ready for a "minority President", the fact is YOU aren't ready!!!!! As for those "southerners that I've known for years" statement you made, birds of a feather flock together and until you and your "southerners" wake up and start living life outside of the 1960' Mississippi, life will continue to be pretty darn hard for America!
Anyone interested in what Huckabee is really like face to face should
try
this funny (but it actually happened) column:
http://goupstate.us/index.php/lanefiller/2007/11/02/title_14

The closeness of Iowa proves that MSNBC and Mason Dixon is NOT rigging anything.  Obama has big MO Everywhere, now that the Clinton inevitability is being lifted.  If you want to talk bias, watch the Clinton Network News (CNN) or FOX which now is coming out FOR Hillary because Fox is now afraid Obama might win - which means a Democrat in the White House.
Please look closely at the Iowa poll (MOE=5%) because 59% of those sampled were women (helps Hillary) and 66% of those sampled were over age 50 (also helps Hillary).  There is NO WAY Iowans will let Hillary win and the Actual caucus turnout will favor Obama, as well as the Undecided and <15% candidates.  I am white and over 50 and can cite over 20 reasons why Obama has a better chance to defeat the Republican.  The most obvious reason is that there are LOTS of recent Polls that show how unpopular Hillary is among Independents compared to Obama.
The reason you are not seeing more Obama participation here is that we are too busy watching Oprah and giving more money.  South Carolina is now Obama country and the Jan. 26 victory will move the Obama Phenomenom into overdrive.
Kelly, NH - Hillary isn't asking people to vote for her because she is a woman...and you are kidding yourself if you think Bill's success had nothing to do with the woman that was attached to his hip. As bright as he is - he pales in comparison to her. She didn't go to one of the best colleges in the country because of him. Just because you don't like her -- doesn't mean you should act like a know it all and tell us what she is asking people to do or telling people how to think - seems like that has been left to you.
This OBAMA SURGE is REALLY a SURPRISE ! As an EDWARDS supporter,I must now RECONSIDER OBAMA as a SERIOUS CANDITATE ! Some of the remarks by MS.OPRAH WINFREY regarding doing the SAME THINGS and EXPECTING A DIFFERENT RESULT,really hit home ! I for one want to get AWAY FROM A LOBBYIST RUN & PAID ROR GOVERNMENT !
OBAMA MAY BE THE TICKET OUT !!
Verner Robinson (Sent Sunday, December 09, 2007 12:23 PM)

Obama took lobbyist money till he declared he is standing for President to come across as holier than you. Dont listen to lies, check his PAC funding on Election Commission website. Obama has PAC funding. What does that mean?

It means he takes money from lobbyist indirectly.

Think, read, understand politics, dont be a fool who can be lied to.
Obama is the only chance the Democrats have at winning!...Clinton will inspire the Neo-cons to come and vote....Edwards will be broke....Vote OBAMA....encourage the others to drop out and endorse him....

"Please consider this:

-If you want "In God we trust" taken off our currency.

-If you want corruption and big money to rule the country.

-If you want your children/grandchildren to grow up in a country without a chance unless they are born into money.

-If you want to believe in lies and flip flops.

-If you want adultry to lead as an example for all the
young people to set the goals to.

-If you want someone who never went to public schools.

-If you want someone who had to work hard for what
they have earned.

-If you want someone who has multi million dollar bank
accounts just because of their family name.

-If you want someone who don't know what it is like to
mow their own lawn.

Then don't vote for Mike Huckabee!!!

As for me and my family we want honesty and christian values to be seen in our goverment. Also to me the wealthy guys in the race have nothing in common with the average poor/middle class person. They have no idea what it is to have to decide wheater to buy groceries or try to skim by with what you have so you can buy gas to get to work, or let some bills go for a month so you can buy gifts for your children. I feel Mike Huckabee knows where/how these things affect the poor/middle class in this country. I hope all can look past all the big money ads to put Mike down so they can keep there power trip over the rest of us. Would it really be that bad to have a president who has some compassion, morals, feelings and open minded policy for the people? So in 08 vote Huckabee for a better america lets put the people first again and not big business.

VOTE MIKE HUCKABEE!!!!!!!! "

--------------------------------------------------
David, you are mistaken.

There have been several Democratic and Republican Presidents and none of them have taken "In God We Trust" off the currency. Why would one start now?

"If you want corruption and big money to rule the country?"
Remember, Congressmen Bob Ney and "Duke" Cunningham were Republicans.

"If you want your children/grandchildren to grow up in a country without a chance unless they are born into money"
Where in the heck did you get this idea? The Republicans have turned budget surpluses into budget deficits over the last 7 years.

"If you want to believe in lies and flip flops"
The flip-flop king is Romney, a Republican.

"If you want adultry to lead as an example for all the
young people to set the goals to"
Again, The adulterer was the Louisiana Republican David Vitter.

"If you want someone who has multi million dollar bank
accounts just because of their family name"
Romney again.

"If you want someone who don't know what it is like to
mow their own lawn"
Romney again. Heck, he didn't even bother to use American citizens as the labor.

Let me guess, you have been voting For Bush and the Republicans and now you are in the poorhouse.
Try voting for another party.
What has Huckabee said he would do to help you? I haven't heard squat on the real issues, like jobs or healthcare. He said jobs are going overseas and if you would lose a bunch of weight, you wouldn't need healthcare.

LMAO.

listen folks.... i just left the cbsnews.com forum & the post on that site about obama are about as vile & hateful as you can get.... as a american male of black descent, the "nerve", of some of "the cowards post"!!!!

i "expect", the flat out "racism" from the "neo con" controlled, "military & c.i.a.","white male right wing azz wipe's/chicken hawk's", like bush/cheney/guiliani!!!!

but some of the "crap", coming from the "so called", "centrist demorats", like supporters of hillary/liberman is "just as offensive"!!!!

example: 1 azz wipe stated & i quote!!!

"why is oprah endorsing a politician after 21 yrs of not endorsing a candidate"???  "the reason they said is because of barack's race"!!!!!

aint that a crock of "bullcrap"!!!!

hillary has "high profile blacks", like "magic johnson", supporting her with fundraisers & logistics!!!!

is anybody accusing "barbara streisand & rob reiner of "white racism", because they are backing hillary instead of barack???

repuke racism(republican) & demorat bigotry(democratic) must be smashed for all "progressive", peace loving people!!!!

wake up amerikkka!!!! you have lost your soul!!!

NO DRAMA WITH OBAMA IN 2008!!!!
obama what a name sounds like a terriost name . i think he is a sleeper cell . no doubt . would you want a sleeper cell in the white house .i think obma is a terriost who will drive a plane into your mortgaged house .
Obama NO.A black President No.There is no way in hell that this country will vote for a black as president and he is also a big liar.He hasn't even been a senator for a year and already has missed voting on issues 90% of the time.He has said that while he was in New York he lived in a tenament where there was a dead man on the fire escape and would watch while White people bought there dogs to do there jobs and that he got a job with a law firm and that he even had a secratary.he wrote thayt in the book he wrote. All lies.Be sides he is the most inexperiece person ever he condems Hillary who has been up in WASHINGTON WHITE HOUSE AND A SENATOR A HELL OF A LOT LONGER THAN he has.
Governor Huckabee has 10 1/2 years of experience as Governor-more executive experience than ANY of the others- he also has PROVEN he can get the JOB done buy providing heathcare for kids, while cutting taxes in other areas. He is not tied to the Bush cronies and people and all the Media & big wig GOP money boys are angry because he is upsettting the apple cart- with virtually no money- We have said the whole time it is David(Huckabee) vs. Goliath (Corporate GOP and Hillary)...and he has the Philistines on the run!!!!!!
It's refreshing that Hillary has  to work for this nomination which I sincerely hope she doesn't get. She had virtually no opposition in  her NY races and now she thought she could coast right in. Sorry Dragon Lady it's not going to work this time. You will be beat this timearound. Chelsea and Mom are going to make you look any better than we already see you as and that is a scary, cold, CALCULATING, DISGENUOUS PHONY.  AMEN.....
I am so thankful for Mike Huckabee as it seems like most other Americans are also.  This election is over and thank God Mike will be our president.  The sun will shine on America again with him directing it. You athesists, soldier haters, and hardcore liberals that hate this country, along with that lady that stole the whitehouse furniture should just shut up and get a life. Even your moderate democrats, blacks and hispanics will vote for Mike Huckabee.
I have to re-post these from earlier .....

"More "revisionist journalism" from MSNBC. I guess Ron
Paul dropped out of the race? It never ceases to amaze me that these "news" organizations arbitrarily omit undesirable information. You know: Like the fact Ron Paul leads several of these candidates in several of these polls."

"These polls are rigged and ridiculous.  When they call they don't mention Senator Ron Paul, but they give a 6th option called "ANY OTHER CANDIDATE."  Well DO THE MATH!  There is 25% MISSING FROM THE IOWA POLL!!!  I WONDER WHO GOT THAT 25%?!?!  No body believes that you are at all credible for reporting these polls as news."

Now for My Opinion....
"These polls REALLY ARE rigged.  It's high drama being manufactured by the media.  The fact that they ALWAYS leave out Ron Paul in their "news" and "polls" is testament to that.

Ron Paul has raised more money, from REAL PEOPLE, everyday Joe's, our soldiers overseas, every walk of life, than any other candidate on either side of the political fence. He has Democrats and Libertarians switching parties to Republican just so they can vote for him. He's the only Republican that appeals to both sides. And all those "other candidate" categories on the polls are more than likely Ron Paul supporters.

Stop chattering about what the media wants you to chatter and argue about (racism, sexism, ageism and every other 'ism) and forget THEIR "front runners".  Don't let the media control you. Start thinking for yourself and READ what Ron Paul says on his website -- http://www.ronpaul2008.com/ -- and look at all his experience and his stellar record. He's got it all. VOTE RON PAUL!!!!

Then for fun, check out the best Ron Paul song recently Featured on YouTube at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v6A7Iggebm4
It is nice to see that MSNBC has taken it upon itself to direct the election and personaly eliminate Ron Paul.

To the restof the people who left a comment: dont let this stop you from squabling over a different name and the same options.  Who needs a political process that is free from corporate censorship
Huckabee has told South Carolina voters that he supports the confederate flag and supports South Carolina flying the confederate flag. Does that mean that he supports slavery, racism, and the southern United States suceeding from the northern United States.  How does he get away with saying these things. He has so many radical beliefs. He has supports a quarantine of people with AIDS (reguardless of how they contracted it or if they are little kids), criticizes people for their religious beliefs, claims to be the new Christian leader, wants to ammend the constitution to what he thinks God's will is, and now supports the confederate flag.  I don't know how he is still one of the main contenders for  the republican presidential primary.  I just hope people see him for who he really is.  A minister running for President with radical beliefs.
