The New York Times: "In front of what will probably be their most pro-immigration audience, Republican candidates toned down their rhetoric but told Spanish-language television viewers in a debate on Sunday that they would take strong measures to close off the country’s borders to illegal immigration."
The Boston Globe: “Republican presidential candidates tempered their tough talk on illegal immigration and praised the Hispanic community's family values as they sought to stem the exodus of Hispanic voters from their party during the first debate of the GOP campaign to be broadcast in Spanish.”
The Politico's Martin: "Besides former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee’s usual gift of the glib, the top candidates didn’t seem to be comfortable. Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz) and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, especially, seemed to not offer their best performances." On format: "The questions were plenty tough – especially on the issues relating to the party and immigration – but there were no follow-ups of the sort that have put candidates on the spot in previous debates and provoked heated exchanges."
Speaking of immigration and the Republican Party, the New Yorker's Ryan Lizza looks at how immigration issue has affected the GOP race, with two major candidates -- Rudy Giuliani and Mitt Romney -- "following the lead of Tom Tancredo... The emergence of Tancredoism as an ideological touchstone for two Republican front-runners is a stunning development, another indication of the Party’s rejection of nearly everything associated with the approach taken by George W. Bush.”
